Ahem.
This probably won't make you feel ANY better about the delay, but it's looking amazing right now. We still have to get the colour just right (because this was an unplanned addition to the series, it's kind of thrown our title-colour scheme up into the air...) but it's looking beautiful. Tanith looks like a total BAMF.

The good news is, I've finished writing it. I finished yesterday and sent it off. Right now, before the editing process begins, it is 54,000 words long. That's fifty-four THOUSAND.
It was MEANT to be roughly twice the size of The End Of The World, which came in at something like 17,000 words. So when I started I was looking at a quick 36,000 word novella that I'd bang out between the end of the KOTW tour and the beginning of writing Book 8, giving me loads of time to relax and take it easy.
And it was going fine, it really was. I had Tanith and Sanguine, and they'd recruited their team of villains, and the story was rattling along and everything was cool... and then I introduced a team of good guys as well. So we have Dexter Vex and Frightening Jones and a few new characters, including the Monster Hunters (two guys I've been trying to find a place for in the regular books) and Saracen Rue. Saracen is the only surviving member of the Dead Men that we haven't met yet, and it was just so much fun writing them all that the word count kind of... ran off, dragging me behind it.
It was MEANT to be a little sliver of a book. Now it's practically two-thirds the length of Book One.
The things I do for you people, I swear...
The "Can Your School Get More Awesome?" competition is still going strong over at the Skulduggery website. The ingenuity on display is something to behold, with many of you using both social AND mainstream media (local papers, radio stations) to garner as many votes as possible. Have to say, I'm impressed at the imagination being displayed- there are some real smart cookies out there. There a few schools that are practically guaranteed to be in the top ten, there are plenty more who have established themselves as challengers, and then there are the schools with only a few votes. And to the people who put forward THOSE schools, I have to ask- how does it feel to be so utterly cool? How does it feel to be the only one in your area with enough good taste to vote? You are shining lights, you truly are.
I'm just looking at some of the photos... I love that the Bishopston school in Swansea and Heathcote School and a few others have sent us photos of the school crest- I have no idea how Tom would have drawn Skulduggery in THOSE photos but it would have been fun to see him try...
And St Annes in Shankill, who supplied an arial view... Dammit, if this had been voted for, Tom could have drawn Valkyrie plummeting from the sky and Skulduggery swooping in to save her. Argh! The potential for coolness would have been astronomical!
Let's see, what else... Skulduggery and Val would have looked awesome in the corridor of Holy Family Senior School in Ennis... and they have skeletons in St Matthews!... imagine Val abseiling down the side of Carterton Community College... or Skulduggery walking up the stairs of Selly Park Technology College for Girls... the dogs in Gabbinbar State School in Toowoomba (you don't have to look up Toowoomba to know it's in Australia, do you?) would have been able to chew on poor Skulduggery's leg... awww and I've just seen the picture from Invicta Grammar School with all the girls in army fatigues- I'd have loved to have visited there... I'm pretty sure that's a picture of Camilla visiting Brookside Primary School- so Val would have looked pretty cheeky pulling a face behind her back... and she would have fit right in with the girls from Oakmeeds Community College... Skulduggery would have been so proud to stand in amongst everyone in Scarborough College... then we have Skulduggery himself in Brentwood Ursuline Convent HS... and I'd have loved to have visited Hitchin Girls School, if only so I could have made a load of jokes about hitchin' girls...
Voting is still going on, so you've all got plenty of time left. Once we have the top ten, it'll be up to me to pick the photo that would lead to the best Skulduggery pic and then we'll have our winner. But the effort all of you have gone to is just hilariously impressive...

Fabi's car stops outside André's property, and the gate opens. The gate opens when someone (in this case, Rebecca) presses the button on the remote. There's a remote in the house, one in André's car and one in Rebecca's. This may or may not be important, I really don't know.
Fabi gets out and takes her duffel bag (which she bought on the way) from the trunk. When she turns, André and Rebecca are standing by the door, André holding their two-year-old daughter Jessie.*
Rebecca smiles sadly but warmly. "Hello Mireille, it's good to see you again."
Fabi tries to return the smile, but it doesn't quite happen somehow. "Yeah... I'm so sorry it wasn't under better circumstances."
Rebecca and André both nod grimly. Jessie mumbles something.
"Oh, that's right." André hands his daughter to Rebecca. "Could you take her to play group? Mireille and I have some...catching up to do."
"Of course, honey." Rebecca smiles and takes Jessie out to the car.
"You can put your bag in the guest room at the end of the hall." André points. He walks over to the window and looks out.
Fabi uncertainly does as she's told. When she gets back, her brother is watching as Rebecca's car drives away.
André sighs. "I hate to be the one to tell you this, Mira. Cam always she would do it if we ever had to, but..."
Fabi waits.
"You do know the family business, right?"
Fabi nods. "I've never been much into computers, truthfully."
André's face relaxes a bit. "No, I'm afraid it's a lot more complicated than that. Have some coffee."

Yeah, well- maybe Adra and Mr Reynolds talked for a little while, enjoyed some cruddy coffee, shook hands, and parted ways before even realizing that they had. The conversation was then lost to the envelope of the diner's cheap facade. Maybe they discussed urgent matters, maybe they had simply discussed the lack of sugar in their bitter coffees. Seriously, it could be anything.
I think I worked out that I like writing rp's a little like Fabi's doing; a narrative more than anything. I'd never be as good, but i could try something like]]
"Crimson?" Reynolds asked incredulously. "You're worried about a colour?"
"No," Adra sighed for the third time since sitting down. She should have talked to the skeleton detective. She should have contacted Trip. And she definitely should have brought more applesauce, she thought to herself, squeezing the empty packet wistfully.
"It's a person. Like me, you know? A..." She lowered her voice. "Sorcerer."
Reynolds frowned. "Why are you whispering?" He whispered back.
"The...because? What did you say back in the apartment? Walls have ears?"
"Yeah, but..." the P.I looked around the empty diner. Even the woman who had served their coffees had left for a smoke. "Trust me. I don't think these walls have ears."
[[and then I'll leave it open or something cos i'm tired and i need to grab something to eat]]
*There's a tap on her shoulder, and she turns, swinging the bat straight into Hydra's face*
*The other girl's skull cracks upon impact, and her body falls to the floor, twitching as her Philosopher's stone slowly heals her*

I really don't know why I bother fixing anything here. All it does is break- that's all everything does. You put it back together, but it's more fragile, and more prone to breaking again, and again, until it's useless.
*She runs a hand through her hair, and a portal appears, to which she kicks Hydra through back home*
*Knows what happened during her blackout now*
*She wasn't attacked, no- her subconscious, her ID had happened, and she had, despite her pregnancy, tried to take her own life*
*Sighs*
*Curls up on her couch*
(Well, if I recall correctly, HB said he had to leave anyway, so I hope you don't mind HB! *hugs*
I'm trying to stretch this out as long as I can.)
Reynolds froze, and Adra did too. Her eyes were locked onto her salad, his eyes were locked onto his watch. An incorrect description would be to have said that the seconds ticked by- for Reynolds could most definitely see the seconds were not ticking by. The hands on his watch were not moving, not even a fraction. Time had truly come to a standstill, and neither of them had any goddamn idea why.
What the hell? Reynolds panicked, unsure what was so important about the moment that everything had stopped moving.
So close, Adra thought, willing her wrist to move the lettuce leaf an inch closer to her mouth so that should could eat it. Dammit, she was hungry and so very tired of this time bullshit. It made no sense; she hadn't done it and as far as she could tell, no-one else in the empty diner had either.
Was it you? she wondered, trying to look at Reynolds but failing to shift her gaze.
It was then, still locked in that moment, that Reynolds noticed the bullet held suspended and mid-flight between them.
