I was sent a little over 30 entries and it was not easy narrowing them down. As usual, the standard of writing was very high- and not just with the winners, either. A lot of the entries made me laugh, and that's always a good starting-off point, but the major point of interest for me was watching where you took the story. I gave the villain an outrageous name- Sadistica Tortura- and sat back and let the fun begin. There were some lovely ideas in there, some lovely moments and some fantastic lines. You should all be proud- especially those of you who managed to stick to the word count (ahem).
I managed to take a few days off last week, but seeing as how I have about five weeks before I head off on tour, I need to start working again. August is pretty much wiped off my calendar as far as writing goes, so I'm going to have to get an early start on Book Eight. Which is scary, because it only seems like a few weeks ago that I finished Book Seven. I'm not going to talk about Book Eight AT ALL until a few months from now, once you've absorbed KOTW into your bloodstream, but it feels kind of weird to be tying up all of these stories that I've been telling since 2007. Best not dwell, methinks...
Oh, and as for KOTW release dates, those lucky scamps in Australia/New Zealand will be getting the new book ever-so-slightly ahead of anyone else... My tour there starts on August 8th, and my publishers want the books on the shelves at LEAST one week before that- maybe even two. For the UK and Ireland, we're looking at a release date of August 30th, I think.
Of course, the Minions-who-speak-funny know by now how much I detest spoilers, and you've all been fantastic at not ruining the books for other people. I shall expect this to continue (shakes fist in a threatening manner...)
For all you Ameriminions, still no news on getting the newer books released over there, my apologies. I have some positive news for the Germinions, however, as my German publishers are planning to catch up to the English-language releases. More news on that when I have it.
Oh, and Irish readers will be able to take a break from the football final on Sunday night to tune into Celebrity Mastermind on TV3, where I shall be showing off my amazing brain power on national TV. Hells yeah.

.... looked down into the casket. There she lay, still and cold while the dust floated down around her. Her dress was blood red and sparkled in the small shafts of light entering the stone room from above. Her skin was slightly tanned and her hair was a dark, reddish brown and was tied back into a bun with a few curled strands framing her face. Her eyes were closed but Mort knew that when they opened they were a shining magenta. The middle casket was empty and the one furthest to the left was inhabited by a man with blonde hair and a scar over his left eye. He wore green robes with a white hem around the neck studded with blue gems. His eyes were also closed but they would be a cool blue when they were open. They both looked young, only around twenty or so but Mort knew they were far older.
"You ready for this?" ..... asked.
"Do we have a choice?" .... asked and stood in front of the caskets, arms open wide. "Mahayay." he said.
The room rumbled like thunder and what sounded like the screams of a thousand souls rushed in like wind. The four of them, ....., ....., ... and ....., were forced against the wall. Everything went quiet suddenly. The two figures rose silently from their prisons as if pulled up, eyes still closed. When both of them were stood up straight their eyes snapped open.
The ..... were awake.
I've had to edit out anything that show what story it's from...

Joseph stood at the graveside. He still did not understand why he had to come to the funeral of the great-uncle he had never known about until two days ago. He dropped his flowers on the grave and stood silent while the priest read a few words. When the priest had finished Joseph went and started the walk back into the inner parts of the city. A few people drove past in cars but Joseph had never been able to afford one.
He passed into the city limits and found himself looking up at the new, more modern buildings of the rich people and high class citizens. He would give anything to be up there but instead he was outside the small restaurant that nobody in their right mind would go to. He worked in the back, stacking plates. He opened the door and a bell clanged. Nobody was eating there, as usual. Brian Garland came from the back, hoping to find customers but his face darkened when he saw Joseph.
"You!" he screeched. "Get in the kitchen now, and don't show your late hide again until your shift is over or you'll lose more than your wages!" the man stomped. He barely came up to Joseph'e neck but nobody questioned him, he was related to Frank Garland. Garland ran the underworld, or did until he died. Now it had passed onto his son, Kenny. Rumours flew around that it was actually his sister, Theresa, running it but he shot anyone who said this. Brian was Kenny's cousin and Joseph doubted they knew each other very well but still, better to be on the safe side.
"Yes, sir." Joseph mumbled and started towards the grimy door.
"Mr Hendrick, why aren't you in uniform?" Brian asked.
"I was just at a funeral, sir." Joseph said.
"Well you better be back in uniform tomorrow." he growled.
Joseph nodded and went into the back. Two other people were there. A very bored looking chef by the name of Martin and an equally bored dishwasher named Colin. Martin had dark skin and dark eyes. He shaved his head and wore a trilby at all times to cover the burn across his scalp he had got when leaving America. He didn't talk about it so Joseph only knew small amounts from rumours. Martin was also well built like a boxer and his chef's uniform was always a little tight. Colin was the opposite. He was small and spindly with long, thin arms and legs. His skin was a pale pink with rosy cheeks and his hair was blonde and lay flat on his head.
Joseph walked to the draining board, picked up the one plate lying there and put it in the cupboard.
Martin grunted. "Why does he make us stay when he knows hardly anybody ever turns up?"
Colin shook his head. "Not a clue. I should be at home no, Mary's 'xpecting." he said.
Joseph turned to Colin. "How many months now?" he asked.
"Nearly nine, if I'm not around I dread to think what my mother will be like." Colin replied sadly.
"I'm sure you'll be there." Martin said.
Joseph drifted to the small, open window. He could hear the sounds of laughing, partying and chatter drifting in on the night air. "I belong out there." he said.
"Not this again, Joe." Colin groaned.
"What? I have my plan I just need some investment to make it work." he explained.
"No, Joe, nobody will ever want to buy leather jackets. People just think it's wrong." Martin said.
"Times change, Martin. I'm sure in a few years everyone will want one." Joseph replied. "I do belong out there, not here. I can feel that I should be more."
"And I can feel that I should be at home but I'm not." Colin said coolly.

He looked at the figure in the long, black, hooded cloak. A fringe of purple hair covered their eyes but he could see their mouth which formed a small, cold, cruel smile.
They spread their arms and the black hall fell away and the black bricks formed an impossibly large staircase that spiralled upwards and down and the figure was carried away from him. Shadows fell on the path from no light source as the staircase hung in nothing, suspended in shadows and time. The gloom closed in so that each step was almost invisible in the darkness.
It seemed a long way up and a long we down.
He gulped then started to run up the twisting road...

She walked down the corridor. Her anger was absolute and she could see red flecks in her vision. The lights flashed on and off, casting strange strobe silhouettes on the metal walls.
The roar of the thunder outside filled her ears and head while the lightening flashing in through the windows added to the strobe affect.
She reached out and her inch long nails scratched down the metal walls as she walked, sending sparks flying.
When she reached the door at the end of the corridor she prepared to kick it down but decided to show him what she could do and who he had messed with so she took the water from the air and shot it in two powerful streams from her hands.
This was it.
The final match.
The last stand.
The endgame.
