Okay, I know I said last time that I was presenting to you the final Demon Road cover, and I absolutely WAS, there's no question about that. But this is the FINAL final Demon Road cover, which is obviously the ACTUAL final cover, unlike the PREVIOUS final cover, which — as it turned out — wasn't really final at all. It was, as we say in the book trade, "not the actual final cover." But this one is. Totally.
For a start it's, like, gold. Someone may have made a joke (it could have been me) that it'd be cool to have a gold cover to reflect my, y'know, Golden God status, and my publisher may actually have thought this was a good idea, so... gold.
Also, it's just a touch less BUSY, don't you think? The image of Amber running will still be appearing, but now it'll be on the back.
Arriving at a cover this cool has not been easy but boy, has it been worth it. And just wait till you read what's INSIDE it!
(Hint: it's really good.)

Ludo is a board game, and it's pretty much the simplest board game.
You have four counters and you roll two dice and move the counters around the board and into your little end bit at the middle, and the first to get all four to the end wins. And sometimes it has other names, like Frustration, and that (and some others) has a popping plastic dome thing in the middle that rolls the dice for you.
And I was going to say some other things but I refreshed and Star replied and now I'm just too lazy to backspace that explanation away so, hey. :)

Am I the only one who doesn't like the Demon Road cover? It just keeps getting worse. It looks like a film poster. If it was advertising a summer blockbuster I'd be totally onboard. But it doesn't seem much like a Derek Landy book cover. The cliché photographic realism, really? And the font is so bland.
Skulduggery was so unique, the title font was totally original and the illustrations were the only reason I picked it up in the first place. I have to be honest I would never pick up Demon Road if I saw this in a bookshop and didn't know the author.
Highly disappointed. I'm sure the book will be great but I'm not going to sing praises about the cover just because I love the author. It's so bland, it completely lacks the unique quirks that I so loved. Or perhaps that's just me.
(The "Derek Landy" font is nice..
And I like the car at the bottom.
But now that you mention it is I saw it in my library.. I probably wouldn't pick it up..

So... That's how I found SP, cause the art and Skulduggery caught my eye.

But hey, I also read The Morganville Vampires, and they have the shit ties covers ever.
(Although I only picked the first one up because I liked the author"s name . . . I was expecting it to be as shitty as it looked).
I don't really look at covers first, I pick up books with nice titles and then sniff them in-store. If a book has a nice smell I assume I'll like it and then I buy it. If a book doesn't smell very good, I try to steer clear unless I truly believe with my whole heart and soul the book will be better than the scent.

Yeah, after noticing the cover, I read the synopsis. If that sounds good, I'd be interested.
You do get some looks from other shoppers and the people who work there. But there was this one time there was a girl sniffing a book and I stared at her like a weirdo and then she put the book down and walked to a different part of the shop and I was going to say sorry but then I didn't want her to kill me or anything so I just left it. Then about 10 minutes later I look up from thoroughly sniffing a book and the girl is there staring at me. And then we talked and looked for books for the next hour and I've never seen her again but it was fun chatting with her and I didn't even get killed which was a total bonus considering only psychos sniff books.

I think... Tom Percival artwork might not be appropriate for the book? I mean, you can't really slap a well dressed skeleton on everything. Not that he can't draw anything else, Tom's a super artist, but my point is that--
It's not a fantasy book? It's a YA thing (I guess?) about people in the real world (I guess), and I think the realism lets you know that? It kind of says, if you're looking for Skulduggery you're in the wrong place, while the title makes you think, 'OK but if you're not that, what are you?' And that might make you pick it up and read the synopsis and think maybe, or think maybe not.
You'd be a little disappointed if you picked up a book for the beautifully illustrated demon-filled cover it sports, and then turned it around to find it's not actually about that kind of demon (I guess).
Plus, you can't really have a cover to please everyone, and on a selling point of view, why not appeal to the people who didn't pick up Skulduggery, instead of those who would recognise the name and might take a look anyway? Idk. To me, I think the cover looks good for the book. :) )
