The Demon Road proofs have been sent out to critics and reviewers and bloggers and booksellers and all kinds of wonderful, wonderful people ahead of the release on August 27. I can't WAIT for this book to get onto shelves. I want to know what you think. I want to see how you react. I've been warned by my publishers not to expect the second series to be as big as the first — at least not initially — and let's be honest, Skulduggery is a hard act to follow. But this whole thing has become a giant experiment for me, and it's going to be fascinating to watch unfold.
There's gonna be some cool bits and pieces available too —"merch" or "swag" or "stuff" or "free things" like Demon Road badges and wristbands and maps and little pamphlets containing the first four chapters. That's kind of the point of this blog post, actually, because once those sample chapters are released, a plot detail that I haven't REALLY spoken about is going to be confirmed. So I'm going to discuss it here first, by providing to you the opening line of the book:
"Twelve hours before Amber Lamont's parents tried to kill her, she was sitting between them in the principal's office, her hands in her lap, stifling all the things she wanted to say."
I've talked about how this is a story about a girl being chased across America by a pack of demons. What I haven't said is that those demons are Amber's own parents.
I had this idea years ago, of a teenager being hunted by her mother and father. It resonated with me because this is so obviously WRONG, it is against the natural order of things for parents to want to harm their children. I'm lucky — I come from a good home, and I have loving parents, but I am well aware that not everyone is in the same position. This inversion of values is why the idea stuck with me, and so the whole trilogy has become an examination of family, and what it means to be loved and accepted for who and what you are.
I'm not going to say anything more about it right now, and all those wonderful people who are reading the proofs won't really be saying anything about it until the official release, but I genuinely cannot wait for you to get your hands on this book.

Gemma, if you want us to shower you with love and compliments because you're feeling shitty, can you please just ask straightforwardly? That way there aren't a load of social conventions to trip through and you'll get a more straightforward response, meaning eveyrone will feel better.

I guess it just depends if you think spending a lot of time and energy working so that maybe we can speak to Derek is worth more than spending a lot of time and energy roleplaying with your friends. Different people value different things. That's cool; that's diversity. It's not fair to condemn people for their diversity.

Sorry - people doign this really pisses me off, and it's really irrational so don't think anythign of it, but right now I'm trying not to scream and punch a wall.

The thing is, she wants people to do her a favour, but she's not telling them she wants the favour done very clearly and then she's feeling upset when they don't do the favour. It's like the different between writing somethign large on a poster as opposed to putting it in small print. If you put it in small print, it will get forgotten and ignored regardless of how many people care about her. My point is - if she wants her request to be noticed, she should make it noticeable, and if she doesn't then it's not her fault or our fault if it doesn't get noticed.
Also, if she tries to use social conventions on me she'll piss me off, but that's not her, it's me.
@Zaf: I think they care about your opportunity to talk to Derek exactly as much as you care about their opportunity to roleplay.

Sometimes you don't want to put it in huge bold writing because you feel small.
And sometimes you don't want to make it noticeable because maybe you don't feel entirely like you should be noticed, and maybe you don't want to get in the way with all your noticeability, and maybe you don't want to make it big and loud because what if people still don't grant your request? and you don't want to find yourself in that situation?
And maybe those are irrational things to feel, but... I don't think it's fair to condemn somebody for not wanting to make themselves big and bold and noticeable with neon signs and blaring loudspeakers, because... you don't always choose how you feel.
It's like denouncing somebody for being scared of spiders or not liking dogs or panicking in an enclosed space or having trouble talking around people they don't know. It's the way somebody feels and it can be a lot to ask to just... change that?
ANd if people don't notice -- no, that's not their fault. Not at all, for the reasons you already said, and it's hard to change not noticing a request. But equally, maybe it's hard to change not making a request noticeable. And... I don't know, I don't think it's fair to criticise anybody for either of those qualities.))

@Kes well I went to a zootunes concert at the zoo (obviously, the name is /zoo/tunes) for the Indigo girls but when they perform there they normally have Brandi Carlile come on as guest which is the main reason I went (I could have gone to my aunt's for a birthday celebration for family members) and then she came out and because we're just sitting in a field you can move around so we ran up front

(It was about 6pmish and for some reason me and a friend were walking to school. As you do. But we got up the hill and there was a line and we realized Derek was there, at school, about to sign books! So me and my friend joined the line. Some people from school where there, as were a lot of people from the blog. So we got up and they were like 'choose three things for him to sign!' so loads of people were scrabbling at their bags- ah! Could've chosen that! -for paper and a pen to make a list. So we were allowed in and I walked past my female red/purple haired art teacher and somehow mistook her for Derek then grabbed my stuff and made a list, number one being the book. I was complaining at how I'd left the skulduggery's at home because I hadn't known. Anyway, while i was thinking Derek was like "oh and if there's stuff you still want signing after we're in Leeds next. Get there in twenty minutes and join us" and my friend complained cause we hadn't known so we had no transport. Anyway. I started blabbering about getting my face signed, like ivy in the book but couldn't think of a third one. I debated making a sword out of paper and having him knight me. It was great!

But she had blonde/white hair and she was clearly the one causing the... scene.
And yet I didn't know who she was.

@Star The previous dream had a huge city where everything was empty. It had a dead feeling to it. We were probably the only survivors. Someone was looking for us.
My small boy started crying so his older sister put him a few rooms away from us, and we hid as whoever came for us killed the source of the noise.
That was the first dream.
