The Demon Road proofs have been sent out to critics and reviewers and bloggers and booksellers and all kinds of wonderful, wonderful people ahead of the release on August 27. I can't WAIT for this book to get onto shelves. I want to know what you think. I want to see how you react. I've been warned by my publishers not to expect the second series to be as big as the first — at least not initially — and let's be honest, Skulduggery is a hard act to follow. But this whole thing has become a giant experiment for me, and it's going to be fascinating to watch unfold.
There's gonna be some cool bits and pieces available too —"merch" or "swag" or "stuff" or "free things" like Demon Road badges and wristbands and maps and little pamphlets containing the first four chapters. That's kind of the point of this blog post, actually, because once those sample chapters are released, a plot detail that I haven't REALLY spoken about is going to be confirmed. So I'm going to discuss it here first, by providing to you the opening line of the book:
"Twelve hours before Amber Lamont's parents tried to kill her, she was sitting between them in the principal's office, her hands in her lap, stifling all the things she wanted to say."
I've talked about how this is a story about a girl being chased across America by a pack of demons. What I haven't said is that those demons are Amber's own parents.
I had this idea years ago, of a teenager being hunted by her mother and father. It resonated with me because this is so obviously WRONG, it is against the natural order of things for parents to want to harm their children. I'm lucky — I come from a good home, and I have loving parents, but I am well aware that not everyone is in the same position. This inversion of values is why the idea stuck with me, and so the whole trilogy has become an examination of family, and what it means to be loved and accepted for who and what you are.
I'm not going to say anything more about it right now, and all those wonderful people who are reading the proofs won't really be saying anything about it until the official release, but I genuinely cannot wait for you to get your hands on this book.

And I am also aware that it helps me emotionally and I hope it aids Jaimie likewise. However, if I happen not to be here when there is another post, I can assure you that I will not be role-playing due to my inability to do so. However, if I am here I will continue as normal. And I do hope you understand that he communicates far more on Twitter than he does here, I believe? There are many moments in which Jaimie and I not roleplaying in which he does not come on - possibly because he may be busy? It would be better to presume him busy until proven otherwise - in which case, the roleplay would be so small and insignificant in comparison with the rest of the fuss that it would hardly be worth bothering with.)

While it is true that Derek is more likely to appear when there isn't a roleplay going on, I strongly, strongly disagree with the way that those who express this are focusing solely on Jaimie and Sophia's roleplay.
I also would like to say that Derek is a very busy person, and there's a significant chance that he won't comment anyway, either due to his schedule or due to the fact that he prefers Twitter. Therefore, you've just harassed people without actually accomplishing anything.
I mean, don't get me wrong, I think it's super cool when the Golden God comments, I just don't believe it's worth harassing my friends to increase the chance of his commenting a slight amount.

I will say say this once;

Firstly, you'll find Zafira that I care about EVERYONE on this blog. You'll also find that me and Sophia are not the only ones who roleplay. You'll find that Derek is a busy man and as such can't come on a lot of the time. You'll find that even when there is no rp Derek does not come on. You'll find that being rude will just drive him away, so calling Sophia an inconsiderate b*stard is more likely to scare him off than me and Soph peacefully role playing. You'll find that the more you call people inconsiderate the more inconsiderate they will act around you.
Yes I see how some people would believe that due to our role playing Derek doesn't come on. However the fact is that isn't the only contributing factor. Another fact is that if you had ASKED us to stop POLITELY as opposed to making assumptions then we may have in fact been able to come to an agreement, however now less so.
There are people on this blog who wake up too late/have school/eat when Derek is on, preventing them from being able to talk to him. Some of these people also like to read the roleplay. Personally, and I see how I am biased here, but personally I believe that them being able to read the roleplay in their free time is preferable to them a) being jealous of others b) skipping school/not sleeping for a chance to talk to him. Maybe you disagree, but if so express that in a CIVIL manner.

I think the planning line is a really good one and think that exploring the theme of family is a good idea which, hopefully, has been undertaken in a good way.
I hope, however, that people for whom family is a touchy subject don't get upset with the contents of the book as that'd likely ruin it for them, which would be a shame.)

Some notes about Sophia -
-_- Sophia does care about stuff. Some of you aren't even here every week, and I email Sophia with some regularity; I think I know her better than a lot of you who were commenting, and I can attest that she cares a perfectly normal amount..
Also, Sophia is not Dragona.
I don't know how I can make that plainer.
They have different display names; they are different people. I am aware that some people's display names day they're someone that they're not, and doing that is fine to, but personally, trying to remember who the actual person is behind a confusing display name or two is much more complicated that knowing that someone is who they display on their display name, and I don't know how the latter is harder for people than the former. They don't even speak or act similarly. Once again, I know I know them better than most of you, but think if Sophia and Dragona commented with blank display names and proceeded to talk normally under them, I could identify each person pretty easily.
Explaining the different between them is like trying to explain how an apple and an orange are different objects. It's - not - hard.

Monks that become nonlawful don't lose their monk abilities, but may ever again progress as monks, and bards which become lawful can no longer progress with bard levels.
So, if I start as one I can become the other when I feel like it, as I was thinking of taking the character as human anyway. And multiclassing is basically the only way my characters' personalities ever change anyway.

To really oversimplify Taia, to do something there is a difficulty class which is a number, and you roll a (usually) 20 sided die and try to roll equal to or higher to that number to pass the test. You can get modifiers to these rolls based on your character's stats, which is the complicated part of the game.

Because certain things are harder than others. For instance, if you are jumping over a five metre gap you don't need to be as skilled at jumping as a ten metre one. Or in another sense it's easier to tell a lie if you're better at it.

((*hugs Star* If it's any consolation, honestly, A-level subjects are not as life-determining as they are made out to be.
A lot of the time, university courses don't even have specific A-level /subject/ requirements - it's the grades they're after. Some courses DO have required subjects - I think mostly sciences, but that's never more than one/two, and they tend to say 'the subject you're applying for + another science/maths', it's not super specific.
And then, the majority of people completing undergrad degrees in the UK end up with jobs completely irrelevant to what their degree was in - the employers are interested that you got the degree and where it was from, rather than in the subject you studied.
I know somebody who studied biomedical sciences and another who did maths, both at the same university, and both have apprenticeships this summer in, like, accountancy firms or something like that.
I don't know much about not-university options following A-levels, however.
But, yeah, from my experience, they tend to drill into you how much your A-level choices are important!!!!!! but as long as you choose subjects you WANT to study, chances are you're going to end up doing something you want to do, at the end of it. ))

I tend to appreciate time to reflect between books. Brandon Sanderson's only 10% of the way through the first draft of the third book (not like I check every day or anything . . .), so you have a while to wait anyway. :P If you extend the reading time between the first adn second books the wait between the second and third might be slightly less utterly unbearable.
