I don't have the money to 'update' my current Skulduggery collection right now, but if there's some sort of a badass box-set once the series is over, I am buying that thing SO fast . . .

Yes, I have the first three in the really ugly, bland American paperback. Then I've got Dark Days and Mortal Coil in paperback, and everything after that (except that World Book Day novelette) is in hardcover. I hate the fact that they don't match, really. I love these books too much for them not to match. I'll have to update them all once the series ends.
I know! The role-play is so much fun! I mean, I've hardly got a history here as deep as the rest of you, but I already feel thoroughly engrossed and Doctor Precocious has turned into something much deeper and more interesting than I thought she would be when I first came on.

I think other countries have more hard shoulder than us . . . Wiki says that in the UK "Full width hard shoulders are usually provided only on motorways", which suggests that in other countries it's provided more, and in Ireland, you seem to have ACRES of hard shoulder, according to wiki. :O

@Saph: Similarly to Dragona, my characters I generally roleplay as don't have magic, because they're from my own story universe. And I, myself, am not a character. I mean . . . I as a person am such a boring character, plus I don't like giving me another history and stuff, because then I'm not ME. It's like how I hate it in languages classes where you have to write about yourself, and I don't want to write about myself because it's private and you have to earn that information (and yet I just blather out my life to anyone who I see O_O), and I can't make it up because then it's not true.
I don't want to be judged, is all. If people judge me, I want them to judge me how I want them to judge me, with information given as and when I chose it. I also want them to judge me as myself. I don't want them to think thigns about me that aren't true, because then they have an inaccurate picture of me in their heads, and I don't want people to inaccurately picture me, because they'll think I'm a way that I'm not.
Because I analyse so much . . . I often expect to be analysed in the same way, subconsciously, I think, perhaps.

I agree with what you said, Star, though not with the whole 'my role-play character is from my story universe' thing. While that's totally fine for you, and it works great for you, I don't think I would feel comfortable doing that myself. I consider my main story universe, right now, to be my Eliot Cross stories, which you don't know anything about unless you've seen my main blog. The point is, I never found writing myself in as a character in Eliot Cross to be very professional, so I just never thought much about it . . .

I love NaNoWriMo- I think it gives tons of people the motivation and demanding timeline they need to actually produce a novel. Also, it isn't for kids- it's for writers. Anyone who wants to do it is welcome- there isn't a target age group. And, even if it was just for kids, it's still not mandatory by any means. You don't have to do NaNoWriMo to be considered a novelist. So if you know you have a hard schedule and you need to stay focused on school, you just don't participate. That's reflective of the judgement of the individual rather than the nature of the competition.

NANOWRIMO SOUNDS LIKE ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING THINGS EVER. I THINK GETTING KIDS TO BE IMAGINATIVE AND WRITE IS ONE OF THE BETS IDEAS EVER, BECAUSE STORIES ARE AMAZING, AND EVERYONE NEEDS TO LOSE THEMSELVES MORE IN THEM. MY MUM SAID SHE DIDN'T THINK MY SISTER'S FRIEND COULD BE THAT GOOD AT ENGLISH (as in, not the best in the year group. Long story), BECAUSE OF THE BOOKS SHE READ. PEOPLE WHO READ ARE A LOT BETTER AT THINGS LIKE ENGLISH. I'VE LEARNT SO MUCH THROUGH READING. I'VE EXPANDED MY VOCABULARLY MASSIVELY, AND GOT SO MANY MORALS AND VIEWS FROM IT. BOOKS ARE ONE OF THE BEST THINGS EVER BECAUSE OF HOW WELL THEY CAN SUBMERGE YOU INTO A STORY. IN ORDER TO WRITE THEM, YOU HAVE TO SUBMERGE YOURSELF INTO A STORY. SO GETTING KIDS TO DO THAT IS FAB.
There's this boy in my year group that I really have a hard time trying not to hate (because I really try not to hate people. Because hatred is horrible. It destroys so much. But yes), and the reason why is because he's just so BLIND and he has no UNDERSTANDING. You know when people will just never get things, because they do not realise the beauty of questioning the world and getting so much more from it, the world of metaphors and analysis? Some people are just stuck in a box, and they don't even try to see out. I'm all about cutting windows in my box and admiring the view, but they don't see why you wouldn't be satisfied with blackness, a musty smell and being barely able to breathe. And sometimes, you just look at people and you just wonder how they can BE that stupid. It's something that happens a lot, at school. And this boy I have a hard time hating . . . because I shouldn't hate him because he's blind, that's just cruel . . . even though he's REALLY irritating . . . he can't read very well, when the teacher asks him to read stuff out. Why? Because he has had very little practise reading and writing. He doesn't read books. He doesn't know the wonder of looking through all the different layers of reality.
He's just an example.
Reading is amazing. It's exploring without leaving the room. :)
And writing is the same as reading, really. They're both exploring stories in word form. :)
NaNoWriMo is encouraging kids to see the world, to embrace possibilities and become the people they have the potential to be. :)
And school? School is mostly worthless in the ways that matter. I could go on from here, but I think Ari's best at that. :) You know her rants about public schooling? About how kids are being trained not to think, and how most of what we're being taught is memorisation? "Memorisation is not science." That's what Myrnin said to Claire, and I love quoting it. My German teacher the year is rubbish, okay? For many reasons. But anyway, she had these verb conjugations up on the board, and someone put their hand up and said do we need to learn this, and the teacher said, no. She said we didn't need to understand grammar at all, and that all the verb conjugations were in the dictionaries that we could take into the exams (they were), and that it was possible to get an A* without any knowledge of grammar at all.
I was telling my parents how rubbish she was, and they completely agreed (my dad: "There's no language to which grammar is more central!"), and I said that I was just going to have to learnt German in my free time, and they reluctantly agreed with that.
But the POINT is - she said we could get an A* without understanding it.
You see, her priorities aren't straight here. I don't WANT to be taught how to get an A*. I WANT to know German. I want to go into a different country and be able to converse with people in a different language. Intelligence isn't measured in grades. Why should pointless numbers be the focus of our lives? They don't measure us. 'A*' doesn't define me, as a person.

It's like va. I've said this rant before, but youth work is changing, and I won't go into it in great detail, but nowadays, you get given six months to work with someone and then it's case over. Previously, you just worked until the problem was solved.
One is getting a job done, the other is just magic. Helping others. Oh shit, I'm about to cry . . .
This young person my mum used to work with, and they're really good friends now . . . she once asked him what helped him the most, and he said it was her not giving up. And every time I think about that, I cry.
Nowadays, if people miss three appointments, you're just meant to drop it. How is that helping? How is giving up meant to solve the problem?
She said this kid she works with now (refugee kid - job change, remember?) said that he'd never told anyone this and he didn't know why he could tell her, and my dad said, because she listens.
Because my mum cares and she doesn't just want to get a job done and so get money, she wants to help. She wants to reach out.
Kids shouldn't be taught to do jobs and get rewards. They should be taught to reach out to amazing worlds.
. . . Rant over.
Sorry. Sometimes, I start saying something, and then I connect it to something else and start ranting and get really emotional and people at school are just like, why is this a big deal? And they don't get that it's not a big deal, but the things it's associated with are.
And see, one of my character flaws is that I think I'm better than anyone else. :) Finding philosophies to tell people they're special hasn't really helped, because obviously in finding them for other people they work on me. :P It's not very good for me. I was fine already in that aspect. :/

And I agree about the German. I don't want to get an A1 in my leaving, but not be able to speak the language in the country.
