Spirit Lake

Here's a bit of an oddity...

Okay, so you all know what a fan of Ronda Rousey I am. In Women's Mixed Martial Arts, she is the UFC champ. She is an astonishingly admirable lady, brimming with confidence and wit. Some people call her arrogant, but then some people call ME arrogant, and we all know that's not true. Well, it's sort of true. Okay, it's true, but why be humble and boring when you can be arrogant and entertaining?

I am enough of a fan, in fact, that I sought out her signed gloves and won them at auction. Here they are, beside a pair of boxing gloves owned by THE greatest martial artist, certainly in living memory, one Mister Bruce Lee.

On Twitter, I follow two people. Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano. The fact that both people are very pretty women who can fight is a complete coincidence, I assure you. It's because of Twitter, however, that I heard about a project that Ronda's mum and sister are behind— something called Spirt Lake: The Game.

Spirit Lake, essentially, combines adventure video gaming with learning maths (or, as you Americans say, math), in an effort to make learning fun. Originally developed with Native American students in mind, they've realised that the Dakota (Sioux) angle— incorporating historically accurate aspects of tribal life and culture—  appeals to people and schools right across America. And you get to fire arrows! At wolves! While you learn to count! What's not to love??

And if this works like they hope it will, this could be the beginning of something huge. This could revolutionise teaching, and learning— not just in America but across the world— and it could be just the thing that's needed to help struggling students make that singular, all-important leap. This could change people's lives.

So I heard about this, and the Kickstarter campaign they were running to fund the next stage of development, and I figured I may as well send some money over to help them along. After all, the better kids do in school, the longer they stay in school, and the longer they stay in school, the more chance they have of stumbling across my books, right? Right.

As a reward for helping out, they have given me the chance to actually BECOME a character in this game. But I couldn't possibly accept. The fact is, I am amazing. I am awesome. If I were to make a cameo appearance in ANY game, I would make every other aspect of the game pale in comparison. And I couldn't do that to all their hard work. So I asked Ronda's mum if it'd be okay if I could hold a mini-competition HERE, not only for my Ameriminions but for ALL my Minions, and the winner of THAT would get the chance to become a character. If you win, the animators will create an avatar using your name and likeness and as if by magic— you will be INSIDE a video game.

It'll be like Tron only... y'know... you probably won't die.

Probably.

And even though the game is only planned for release in America (right now), the competition is open to anyone of any age and nationality. So here's what you have to do. You have to tell me why YOU would be the most awesome video game character EVER. Once we reach the 5000 comment limit and the Comments Section closes, I shall collect all the entries, stick the names in a hat, and randomly pick the winner.

And yes, entering more than once, with DIFFERENT reasons, gives you a better chance of winning.

There. Bet when you opened up this Blog today you had no idea this was coming at you.

@Star: Hm. Well it has potential to be part of my final GCSE grade, whether it has to be or not. I just don't know whether it has to be or not. :P
With the writing, they just make you select the controlled assessments you did best in and send those off for whatever be done with them. Not sure if it's the same with speaking, though.
But, yeah. Assuming it is is probably the best way to go. Thanks. :)

*nods* That's mostly true, Star. But they do say don't force or overuse the fancy techniques. Take 'em, kinda, sparing, so you show that not only can you use them, but you can use them appropriately and effectively, too. :)
And interesting could get you somewhere. They mark, at least partially, on how well it's actually written. If what you've written is so incredibly boring that your examiner falls asleep, well, you're not gonna get too many marks for that, right? :)
What we were told was to write whatever we're confident with writing, for the most part. ^^

Star Inkbright said...

In school, they told us to stick firmly to one genre, which I get because we are just writing a tiny little story that has no meaning or message and no love or care is put into it. However, most of the best stories irl span several genres, and if you write a stroy just to be in a genre, it is likely to not be as good a story (age genres not applying, because - TBC). You should be trying to write a good story, and if that makes it one particular genre, it makes it a particular genre, but you hsouldn't put it in a genre just for the sake of it being in a genre! (- continuing: because you could be writing a good story for this age or that age, but still aiming for a good story.) If the good story you want to write is a proper love story, then it'll be a definate romance (most of the time), but you shouldn't adjust this or that to make it more of a romance book. WHo cares if it's a 'proper' romance book? You should just be trying to write a good (love) story, and not caring where it lands you.

Yes? Anyone get me?

Sorry, I like ranting. :P

Star Inkbright said...

We were told that if in doubt, write a horror, because that's easy and you know how to do that.

That's what they said. What they meant was, do a horror so you won't stuff it up, and not stuffing it up will mean you get a good mark.

And, I can't write because. I keep writing beacuse. D:

Then i have to correct it. every time.

BECAUSE BECAUSE BECAUSE.

@Ieni: YAY!!!!!!! :)
Well done! For that, you win . . . Uh . . . A PENCIL! *hands*

Msd. :(

Star Inkbright said...

And now my shifting has gone out the window. Oh dear.

Mary Contrary said...

*nods* I get you, Star.
We weren't told to look at any genre. But we were told that meaning and messages and emotions and stuff were, overall, pretty important in the writing.
Our English teacher said that writing something in which not a lot happens physically, but in which you capture/express thoughts and feelings and stuff is good. The same applied to writing what you know/have or could experience, or putting your own experience into similar context, so it's not, like, denatured too much(?).
But then she added that, if you want to write an epic story about somebody slaying a dragon, and you do that well, nobody'll be complaining. :)

Mary Contrary said...

@Ieni: Hooray! And hi!

Very msd. :/

Star Inkbright said...

:)

That's awesome. :)

Thank you. :)

YEAH, I SHOULD WRITE AN EPIC STORY ABOUT SOMEONE SLAYING A DRAGON! :)

Hey, once we were doing endings. You know. TOld not to end with waking up and it all being a dream or happily ever after, told techniques like shock tactics, leaving questions, description, blah.

And then we had to write an ending.

The girl next to be, who was one a laptop coz she broke her arm, wrote:

He died . . .

. . . and then died some more . . .

. . . and then he woke up . . .

. . . and it was all a dream . . .

. . . and he lived happily ever after.

/laughing

Ooo...is it one of those push-up pencils (I dunno what they're called).

Shifting? As in your cello?

Mary Contrary said...

Personally, I like to concentrate on what's going through characters' minds when I write, and how they feel and react and why. That's why I like first person. I find it easier to become whoever my character is, because I can sit and feel panic and racing thoughts in response to what happens and I throwdown the words that those come to the mind of my character as I do that. That's the approach I took to my nothing-much-happens-narrative-controlled-assessment.
I wrote out everything that my character noticed and thought and felt and saw and decided. I tried to think and write as she'd think. And, at least for me, it became a little more interesting that it sounded. :)

Mary Contrary said...

@Star: Dragon slaying was a real example from what somebody'd done, and HE got an A* for it, so I'm sure you could, too. :3

And- Awesome. xD

I might end mine:

And maybe they went to heaven and lived happily ever after, so if you want to think that, I suppose you can. Here:

And they went to heaven and lived happily ever after.

Or, you know, you can be depressing and sadistic and believe they went to hell and got tortured for eternity. Your choice.
-----------

OH WAIT, THAT'S THIRD PERSON. WELL, SECOND, BUT MY POINT IS, YOU COULD BLEND IT IN WITH THIRD, BUT NOT FIRST.

DAMMIT.

But I'd like to write something like that, just beacuse lol. :)

Nah, I won't. -_-

I write in third usually. Occasionally first. Sometimes a weird perspective, like third person with a narrator with an attitude who occasionally talks to the reader in second or first person. It's weird! XD Usually I just do third, though.

@Ieni: No, shifting on the keyboard. I just wrote in my previous comment to the I can't shift one:

Then i (something Star can't remember sorry). every time.

Like gah. :)

@Taia: I envy him. :)

And, I like third person beacuse I like swapping perspectives and occasionally nattering on to my reader about living happily ever after or whatevs. I write in third person past tense usually, but I often write down my character's thoughts as they think them as well . . . Yeah. Like I could suddenly write 'You idiot, Ez.' just after I'd made Ez say something stupid and she'd be kicking herself for saying it. Yeah? And I can write as the characters would be thinking but still in third person. I like that.

So yes.

But I'm just more comfortable in third, yeah. :)

*wants to write now*

Mary Contrary said...

@Star: Ha, that's a nice idea~
Were you told about linking your ending to your beginning? That can sometimes help to give writing a sense of closure, if that's what your going for.
I actually did that in my narrative AND my descriptive piece, I think. Just because it seemed to fit, really. :3

@Fabi: Still, yay for Fabi-dedness! :)

I write in third sometimes. But not nearly as much as I used to. Derek does indeed rule the third person. :P
I don't like to think like I'm telling the story to somebody, most of the time, though. I don't know if that makes sense, but yeah. :P
And, when I DID write in third a lot, I used to do the narrator-talks-to-reader-thing pretty often, too. Sometimes I'd go so far as imaginary-reader-talks-to-narrator, or even character-from-story-talks-to-narrator. That was always interesting/amusing. :P

Er, I've gotta go. *huggles* Bye~

Star Inkbright said...

That sounds fun, Taia! :)

I don't like my characters talking to me. They don't know me. I don't want them to know me. They wouldn't fit in with me. There is a wall between us, made out of that stuff that is see-through on one side and mirror on the other. They're on the mirror side. I'm on the glass and I can see through, but I can never GET through and they are never aware of me.

Sorry, I get carried away with expalining and metaphors . . .

Usually when I write, I try to write things as they would be if that story-world were real, and just try to make it as real as possible. :)

Ah, I'm ending with the shock tactic of them all dying, I think. :)
Although I'll haev to explain it afterwards, which'll kind of wreck it, but MEH.

“So,” Skulduggery began, “Ghastly’s birthday is coming up.” Valkyrie looked up.
“Yeah? What are we getting him?”
“Something really, really good. This is a big birthday. He’s turning four hundred and fifty in two weeks.”
“I want to get him permission to make new robes. He hates the ones he has to wear. Plus they look stupid.”
“But then I can’t make fun of them!” Skulduggery whined. Valkyrie glared at him.
“Shut up,” she glowered.
Oh! I know! What if we got him someone instead of something?” Valkyrie asked. Skulduggery looked at her for a long moment.
“Actually, that’s not a bad idea. We need to think of a way to catch her without hurting her or letting Ghastly know. Any thoughts?” Valkyrie scowled.
“I already gave my thoughts. It’s your turn.”
“Fine. We’ll hunt around and we’ll catch her. Wonderful plan, no?”
Valkyrie sighed. “Just the two of us?”
“Just the two of us.”
Valkyrie grinned a mischievous grin. “Good.”

Nye was in its laboratory, working on the White Cleaver when It found it. The Human Soul. It was like a strand of gossamer, twinkling and gleaming in the dim yellow light. Nye carefully picked it up. It smiled, the black thread in its lips peeking out grotesquely. “At last,” It murmured. Replacing it, Nye scrambled from the room to tell the Grand Mage.
*****
Skulduggery looked down at his phone. “It’s Ravel. I hope everything’s okay.” He wandered into the other room. Valkyrie could hear the low murmur of his velvet voice in the room with the sofa bed. It was comforting, knowing that here, she was always safe. She was always welcome, always protected, always loved when she was in Skulduggery’s house. She was closer to him than anyone else in the world, excepting her own family.

I've always found well executed story lines with twists and turns and heartache and joy to be my forte really. I'm fine at poetry, but I wouldn't be able to sell anything I wrote. Unlike you.

Bye arratay!

Skyril A.K.A the Vociferous Chatterer, Loyal Forever and Always, The Ever-Present, the Pluviophile said...

lol, Woody, I don't know about that... I doubt I could sell it...

That's awesome that you can write so well, though! I want to be like that..., which is why I should be practicing... >.<

Trip Castalan, Lord of The Hobbits, The Fourth Most Popular Folk/Parody Banana Thief In The Land said...

Well, if you never try...
Writing just comes naturally to me, sure I need to work a little, but the words flow from my mind like an ambrosia waterfall. But poetry I have to force, it's like having to guide a pig down a road with nothing but a twig.

Fabi S. - Fashion-Conscious Fire Wraith said...

Most of my recent poetry disappeared... :-/

Bye Arra!

Does anybody else roll his eyes at titles like, "Vampires of Versailles"?

Skyril A.K.A the Vociferous Chatterer, Loyal Forever and Always, The Ever-Present, the Pluviophile said...

@Woody

That's just awesome... sometimes poetry is there, and sometimes not. I always have to think about it, though...
And alright, I'll try... to try... But I wouldn't even know how to start...

I usually have to force writing, and then I edit it a whole lot before I finish... It depends on the scene, though. Sometimes it's easier than other times...

Skyril A.K.A the Vociferous Chatterer, Loyal Forever and Always, The Ever-Present, the Pluviophile said...

Aw, but how did that happen, Fabi?

Trip Castalan, Lord of The Hobbits, The Fourth Most Popular Folk/Parody Banana Thief In The Land said...

I want to say yes, but no, not really. Maybe if I'd seen it in person I would have sighed or something though...

Skyril A.K.A the Vociferous Chatterer, Loyal Forever and Always, The Ever-Present, the Pluviophile said...

LOL, well.... it's the thought that counts.

Fabi S. - Fashion-Conscious Fire Wraith said...

It's an irritating title, and ugh, the alliteration with the V's! Not something I'd pick up, I don't know about eye rolls, though.

Fabi S. - Fashion-Conscious Fire Wraith said...

Long story...

Also I'm not entirely sure...

Trip Castalan, Lord of The Hobbits, The Fourth Most Popular Folk/Parody Banana Thief In The Land said...

Skyril: I generally let plot lines form in my head, then sort of imagine how I would write them. It's good to try and write for something you read a lot before doing your own stuff. I stopped writing other people's characters when it became restrictive in stead of easy.

To me it's like... Overdoing it on Dramatic... Or- that is- TRYING to overdue it on dramatic and kind of failing.

*TRY TO WRITE
not try and write.

Sorry, but everyone messes that up now-a-days, and although I can't correct it in boooksss..... xD

That makes sense, though. I'm afraid I was often too lazy before... I would just start writing without anything solid in mind. I'm beginning to try to redo that, though.

Skyril: Have you considered that try an write may just be the natural progression of the English language? That is how language is formed and becomes a streamlined working language, through everyone getting things wrong.

I hate that idea, though, Woody... Because that means there's no point in studying grammar, and I'm so good at it. Plus, I enjoy proper grammar. "try and" grates against me. >.>

Trip Castalan, Lord of The Hobbits, The Fourth Most Popular Folk/Parody Banana Thief In The Land said...

I enjoy proper grammar, and there are things which I will not stand for, but certain things can slip through those tight nets and become part of how I speak. That is how language develops.

Skyril A.K.A the Vociferous Chatterer, Loyal Forever and Always, The Ever-Present, the Pluviophile said...

O_o
That was fast...
Yes, but I said which do you PREFER :P.

Trip Castalan, Lord of The Hobbits, The Fourth Most Popular Folk/Parody Banana Thief In The Land said...

Skyril A.K.A the Vociferous Chatterer, Loyal Forever and Always, The Ever-Present, the Pluviophile said...

Yes..., I know I ignore a few rules like saying "as" or "as if" instead of "like," and I often end a sentence with a preposition. Still, there are some things that are so utterly natural- like ending a sentence with a preposition- that is just exceedingly hard to do away with because if you do, everyone thinks you're crazy. When a person says "as if" instead of like, it become incredibly repetitive, but everything else... I'd just rather do RIGHT.

Snow said...

... prefer... i really dont know

Skyril A.K.A the Vociferous Chatterer, Loyal Forever and Always, The Ever-Present, the Pluviophile said...

Like saying Whom when it is proper, it makes me sound educated. It's the same way with Sneaked, not Snuck, and try to, not try and... At least to me ~headdesk~.

I might have inherited it from my brother, whom his co-workers call a grammar nazi and Hitler salute him every time he corrects someone. xP

I dedicate this page to Derek Landy, without whom many great things wouldn't exist. All the marvellous friendships I've seen in my brief period here that we're made possible solely by this blog, all those wonderful books, all the fabulous fan fics that have sprouted from his universe, some AMAZING Skulduggery art, and all the things that sprout from his books, blog and general existence. To Derek, the golden god, I say thank you.

Skyril A.K.A the Vociferous Chatterer, Loyal Forever and Always, The Ever-Present, the Pluviophile said...

I am in complete agreement. :D

Trip Castalan, Lord of The Hobbits, The Fourth Most Popular Folk/Parody Banana Thief In The Land said...

I would have to go with Robert Downey Jnr. I just find modern Sherlock Holmes so different to regular breed toe it's its own genre.

Skyril A.K.A the Vociferous Chatterer, Loyal Forever and Always, The Ever-Present, the Pluviophile said...

I've read a few of the Sherlock Holmes short stories, but not many.
