How to Write Books Good, Part 2

Thinking up the character:

  • Look at your idea.
  • Wonder what kind of character would best suit that idea.
  • Come up with character.
  • Give character a name.
  • Scribble out name. Think of a better name.
  • A better name than that.
  • Look at the name you've picked. Realise "Johnny Rockjaw" sounds made-up.
  • Decide on a name. Decide name is fine.
  • Write character. Character is fine.
  • Character does what character is supposed to do.
  • At halfway point, character rebels.
  • Character starts telling you stuff. History. Backstory. Opinions. Stuff not in the plot.
  • Panic.
  • Character derails plot.
  • Plot crashes and burns.
  • Character emerges from wreckage, continues on.
  • Struggle to catch up to character. Character walking too fast.
  • Character behaving like real person.
  • Panic.
  • Who is more real? The writer who writes the character, or the character who writes the writer?
  • Experience existential crisis.
  • Have lunch.
  • Get back to work.
  • Congratulations! You now have your character!

  1. Yes, all of us are born this way.

A writer writes about us, we become us, and then we become writers ourselves.

    The cycle of life.

  2. I....just...spent....an....hour....typing.....this....up and posted it!!!! BAH!!!!

Thank you. *looks up and the sky and goes back to Asgard.*

Heimdall: Frigga is in the garden, Loki. Thor is with her.

    *Vanishes, appearing by Frigga*

    Frigga: Loki! *hugs him tightly*

    Hello, Mother.

Thor: *leaves them alone, going to find Zanida on Midgard*

Frgga: Loki, something troubles you, what is it?

*Breaks away from her embrace and looks at a flower, ironically a red rose* My wife is dead, I cannot find words to tell the twins. I do not understand this fully, but my Rose is dead.

Frigga: Loki, you must understand that often bad things happen. No matter what, you always will have people there for you.

You believe this to be easy, for me to move on? I was happy for once, I had my own family. I do not even know where her body is to send her off properly! How do you explain to children their mother is dead? Why did it have to be her?!

Frigga: You know she will wait for you in Valhalla, she died an Asgardian.

Is that enough consolation for me? You know she will be there, but where will I be?

    Frigga: With her-

-No. Not in Valhalla, I'll be with my daughter, Hel. In another five thousand years.

Frigga: You need to understand that Rose is waiting for you, if you believe you will never see her, you will never get through this.

Really? To think after all I did, all I will do, I will see her? I want to avenge her death. I want to find whoever killed her and make sure they know pain. I had enough emotional distress from Odin lying to me and now this.

    Frigga: Your father-

    HE'S NOT MY FATHER!

Frigga: -Never intended to hurt you.

    He onlt intended to lie.

Frigga: Loki, talk to Jabari please. Tell him what has happened, perhaps you can get him to find Rose's soul.

*He picks the rose, and speaks quietly, almost to himself* Then tell the children their mother is gone.

Frigga: Tell them she has gone to Valhalla and we do not know when she will return, they know we travel to realms, and if Jabari cannot find her, I will tell them.

Very well. Thank you, Mother. *turns to go back to Heimdall*

    Frigga: Loki.

    Yes?

Frigga: If you plan to go to Valhalla and find her yourself, take your sister.

    Why-

Frigga: She rules Asgard, her authority may help you.

Very well. Goodbye. *vanishes, and travels to Midgard*

  3. I could rant about Kara Thrace and her special destiny (not a cover band, I swear!) but it's four in the morning again. And it's Sunday again...

    Good night, Blogland!

  4. Good night, Raven. (And Zaffy!)

See you around, and take care! c:

  5. ((As now my muse is going, I shall continue.-Zaf))

*Leif and Kari play, not knowing their father was about to deliver the worst news ever. Loki walked up to them, keeping his voice and expression from revealing anything.*

Leif....Kari....I have to tell you something about your mother.

Leif: She's really a Frost Giant!

Kari: No, she's really Black Widow!

*smirks* No, she is neither actually. *he stops smirking, carefully wording this as to not make the children upset* Your mother has gone on a very special mission for Thor. She had to go somewhere far away, a different realm even I know not where. I do not know how long she will be gone.

    Leif: Will she be safe?

Of course, she is a warrior. She will be gone a long time perhaps.

Leif: Daddy, I heard Uncle Thor telling Aunt Zanida that Momma is dead.

    Kari: Daddy, is Momma dead?

*Is silent for a few moments* Perhaps.

Leif: You're lying. I know when I am lied to!

You take after me in ways I did not know, Leif. She may be dead, but I will do everything in my power to bring her back.

Leif: We'll make her proud, Daddy. We'll be the best warriors, and we'll be them for Momma.

Kari: She'll be proud of us, Daddy. We promiss.

I expect nothing less of my children.

Leif: Will we see her again? Can we say goodbye?

No. I know not where her body is, but I will travel to Valhalla to find her. Then I will find the person who took her from me and make them suffer.

    Kari: Can we go?

    Go.

*The twins run and Zanida comes in*

Zanida: You'll need warriors to go to Valhalla, and we'll need Jabari. It never has been done.

    I do what I want.

Zanida: I admire you, Loki. You do not stop until you get what you want.

If it kills me, then so be it. I do not take this lightly. My wife is dead and I want to know how.

    Zanida: When do we go?

When we find Jabari, we will go.

Zanida: *hugs him* Together we can get her back.

    I know, now leave me.

  6. When I made Zaf I just seriously put letters together to form a word and then I just thought of disciplines and I picked Necromancy because its cool. Then I read all about Necromancers and based her off that, then I thought of what she likes and she likes power so I thought: Hey she's Grand Mage. Then I was like hmm so how did she get there? Well that bit was explained in SP so I just have gone off Derek's warped world of ideas on that but I came up with how she went into the Sanctuary and I also came up with her loving Ravel and subtly hinted to Derek about that....I mean we all know what happens if you like a character they never end up safe but to have a....history with Ravel was cool. Even if SOMEONE made my eers....

    TDOTL SPOILER

    SPOILER

    SPOILER

afrer life miserable because SOMEONE killed Ravel with that Accelorater and SOMEONE should be thrown in it too because SOMEONE took Ravel from me. And that SOMEONE is laughing at my distress still and SOMEONE better becareful I don't explode him.

  7. Yeah, your welcome. I like it when people's writing just fits together really nice. You know? Like as if its all smooth and all the wrinkles have been ironed out. Because I've read somethings, not here, just in places and some writing just doesn't fit and has sharp pointy bits sticking out of it and it hurts to read because by doing so you're...you're getting stabbed by clunky words.

  9. YES. THIS POST. YES.

Raven, could you send me an email? I have something to ask you, but I forgot your address. :-/

I mean, I must have it somewhere, since you sent in your thingy for The New Challenge, but I can't find it, and whenever I type in "Raven" it suggests nights.raven (who I've never actually emailed O_O) and several people named Raven who go to my school (all of whom I don't even know O_O) but apparently your email isn't in my contacts. So yeah. :-/

  11. I know I have to be careful with my writing now because I write for Loki, and he has a personality that is hard to capture if you don't know it. When I first did write as him people were thinking I was the actor and i had to say who I was but it is challenging to think like him. He's so opposite of my thoughts, like he wouldn't hesitate to kill where I would. I wrote a scene where he had been recruiting an army and Zafira was against it so I was like well where do I go and I knew Loki would just use force or mind control her or black mail because he doesn't care, but when I found him to like Rose his softer side came out.

The research I have and still am doing is a lot.

    -Zaf

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yeah. You're really dedicated to making sure that Loki stays Loki which is good.

    ReplyDelete
  13. This is ongoing since June. *nods* I feel like if I'm going to take on the personality for this, I'm doing it right. I've taken the mythology and Marvel aspects of him. It's been a lot of fun, you know I learn so much about Norse mythology and also I almost can feel why he's so...the way he is. I mean its become easier to understand him. Now going into December, I can easily write as Loki and go for a ride with a roleplay. When he killed Ashlea, he was having fun in a sick way but hey 'You kill because you think it's fun' yeah he does but he messes with you first. He's like a cat playing with his food.

  14. Sooo, how long has the 'prove you're not a robot' thing been on? Or is it just me?

Anyway, I've never actually gotten the chance to comment on one of the newer posts so, yay. :) I feel lucky(for a person who hasn't visited in months).

Also, love the 'how to write books' idea, Derek! ;P Especially this post. My characters are also having such a hard time staying "on plot".

  15. LAV

    [tacklehugs]

It's around sometimes, not every time. It's happened to me once or twice. It seems to remember I'm not a robot. I'm not sure when it started because I have an awful sense of time.

    ReplyDelete
  16. *gets tacklhugged; smiles* Hey, Fabi!

    Oh, really? That's strange...

Is it only you on now?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I don't know? Raven might be distantly here. Snow's online, so I could ask her to come here and she'd probably see it, but I don't think she's here at this particular moment.

    How have you been?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Blake was spontaneous and much of him has been created as he was written. I believe that's the best way to make a character, give them a general look and feel, then test and tweak it. - J

    ReplyDelete
  19. I am in fact distantly here. Hello Lavender and Blake.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yeah, I suppose it is strange. I've gotten a momentary one before, when I accidentally reloaded the page way too quickly, but this appears to be more often and affect more people.

Oh, by the way, Blake's here now.

    (Thank you, captain obvious)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hi Blake, hi Raven. I'm not sure if we've met before. So, hello. :)

Lavender Hope is an OC I created for Derek's book series. The name came pretty easily.

@Fabi: I've been good. Playing guitar now and learning new songs. :)

Sorry for taking a while to reply. Haven't used my computer in ages and for some odd reason, my hands are shaking a little... :/

    ReplyDelete
  22. Then again, it may just be from being cold.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ooh, speaking of cold, it snowed last night! :D

I would like to learn guitar at some point, but I probably never will. I got a keyboard though, back in May, and I'm trying to learn how to use it.

It's okay, I'll probably take awhile as well, because of severe multitaskingness.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Awesome, Fabi! Speaking of snow, we just set up our Christmas lights yesterday. Still hasn't snowed yet.

I guess I'll stay on for a bit, but I'll also be distant.

    ReplyDelete
  25. It snowed a few days ago. Wet, heavy stuff that made the ground about as slippery as it gets.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm wishing for snow, but right now, it's still raining...

    ReplyDelete
  27. You must have mentioned my name too many times. I felt the need to ghost.

    ReplyDelete
  28. We haven't set up anything. Waiting until after Nutcracker next weekend.

Okay, Lav. It's really nice to see you again, by the way. :-) I've missed you.

There was this one year that it snowed and then melted and then snowed and then melted and everything was eventually covered in a layer of ice and the roads were slippery and branches were falling off trees because they were weighed down by extra ice. It was sort of scary but also sort of cool.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hi Snow!

Well, hopefully you'll get some soon, Lav.

[Is cheerily optimistic at the moment for whatever bizarre reason]

    ReplyDelete
  30. Do you happen to live in New England? We got him by a really bad ice storm back in 2008 I believe.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hi Snow!

    Missed you, too, Fabi. :)

That does sound kinda cool and scary. It's even scarier where I live though, because we're right on a hill, so if we get ice, we have to be careful leaving the driveway.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm going to stop ghosting-ish thingo that I do sometimes and go do my math homework. Bye

    ReplyDelete
  33. Nope! Other side of the country, Our storm was maybe 2010? I have a very bad sense of time, though. Usually we either get cold and sunny/frosty weather, or wet and not cold enough to freeze.

We live on a plateau, so we have a few options about grocery stores we can go to. If there's bad weather, the trucks that deliver to the grocery stores probably can't get up the hill, though. Trucks have trouble even in the best of weather.

Bye Raven. Good luck with your homework!

    ReplyDelete
  34. *REALLY feels like an idiot for not asking earlier*
Because you asked me, but I completely forgot to ask how you've been, Fabi. So- how HAVE you been? And everyone else for that matter. Seems so quiet right now...

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi Silente. Nice to meet you. :)

    Okay, Fabi.

    ReplyDelete
  36. It's okay. :-) I've been alright, actually. Very very busy. I've started taking classes at a community college, and I've got a lot of dance as well. I've got a nice rhythm going, if not much spare time.

Silente, you should be asleep now. [hugs]

    ReplyDelete
  37. Wow, cool. :) Two years younger than me.

Still can't believe I'm eighteen... I don't feel like I've changed so much. haha. :P

    ReplyDelete
  38. *looks at deleted comment*
    ?

Uh... should I not mention that then...?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Sometimes I don't believe my own age, either. Whether I feel older or younger, though, well, it sort of depends on my mood.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't like being specific about my age, because I've had this weird little phobia that people will figure out my birthday and then celebrate it or something and that'd be really weird. If you want to leave your comment up, though, I guess you can. I think most people know about how old I am anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  41. *nods*
Completely understandable. Same with me, but I don't think I've ever acted eighteen in the six months I've been that age. :P Sixteen maybe, but I don't think I've acted eighteen.

Then again, I actually don't know how eighteen year olds should act other than really responsible and stuff... I don't even have a job yet...

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't have a job either, if that makes you feel better. The other people in my art class are always talking about work, and I'm just like sort of useless. I mean, I know I'm younger than most of them, but still. My friend R. had a job at 15, and H. has a job and she's about my age.

I don't know how eighteen year olds are meant to act either.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'd get it if you mean random people finding out and celebrating it, but what about us on the blog?

Then again, I'd probably forget... I have a hard time remembering someone's birthday if they're not really close. Facebook usually reminds me if someone from here has a birthday coming up...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Haha, well, when you're eighteen and still jobless, that's kinda when you start to wonder where you want your life to go. :P

I want to be a singer, but I know they don't get too far right away, or a writer, but that has the same issue. I can't seem to find a good job that fits with my interests...

And my closest friend just moved away to start a job herself and I'm already missing her... :/

    ReplyDelete
  45. Being more clear: by start a job, I just mean like looking for one.

    ReplyDelete
  46. It's a phobia. I don't know how to explain it any better. I'd be scared that people would celebrate it but also scared that people wouldn't. I'd rather just not give them the option.

And I don't have Facebook, so...

    ReplyDelete
  47. It's fine, I don't mind not knowing. :) No pressure.

Although I may just tell you happy birthday on a random day(I'm kidding, but it would be kinda fun :P)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Sort of similar with me, except I don't want to be a singer. I've progressed from not-very-good to can-carry-a-tune-most-of-the-time, but still. Not what I want to do for a profession. I do really like music, though, and it'd be sort of cool to be in a band since that wouldn't be just me. I also really like theatre (especially Shakespeare) and art in general. Actors don't get paid a lot, though.

It'd also be really cool to have a small bakery. I don't know where I would start with trying to get there, though.

I really wish I was better with math and computers and stuff. Both my parents work/worked in computer programming and statistics, so it'd be so much easier if I could follow in their footsteps. I can't, though...

    ReplyDelete
  49. [shrugs] I could probably tell you, but I don't think I could post it here, and I don't think it's a big enough deal, tbh.

Msd still. I really should be getting sleep. Don't have to wake up early tomorrow because it's Sunday, but next week is dress rehearsal week, so I won't be getting much sleep. :-/

    ReplyDelete
  50. Me too about the math and stuff. I've dabbled in computer coding, but it's really mind boggling. Not to mention I'd have no idea what I'd want to do with that knowledge anyway. Don't really have a need to make a website and can't draw well enough to try CG animation...

That's something my friend was thinking about. A bakery, but I'm not sure what she's planning to do for a career.

    Theater sounds cool though. :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. It's okay, Fabi.

Well, I agree then, if you have a rehearsal coming up, get as much rest as you can.

Also, good luck with it. :) Dance?

    ReplyDelete
  52. yes a new post! It's been ages since the last!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I've used Python to make poetry, but it's mostly Nelnah's area of expertise, tbh.

It does sound cool, but actors don't get paid much and usually have to have several jobs. Besides that, there's a lot of competition, and if you want to succeed, you have to know what you want to do from a young age and then work really hard at it. I still don't know what I want to do. I think I'm going to apply to mostly liberal arts schools in a couple years, though. So at least I know that much.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I have a week of rehearsals and shows. :-P

But yes, dance. The Nutcracker. :-) I'm one of the soloist lead bakers. Among other things. :-)

    Hello Rueben! [waves]

    ReplyDelete
  55. You have a point at the competition thing... Nice. :)

I think I'll just continue practicing my guitar until I'm better. I've already made my first original song, but I still feel like I need to work on it more. The lyrics are cheesy and the guitar playing is really simple.

    ReplyDelete
  56. So what are you two talking about?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Not much, really.

    Just jobs and interests. :P

    ReplyDelete
  58. I can't write songs. I can compose tunes and write words, but I always have so much trouble putting them together. :-/

@Rueben Birthdays and jobs, I think. Mostly.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yes. We do a performance of The Nutcracker every two years. This one's going to be my last...

    ReplyDelete
  60. Oh cool. I'm thinking about being an author (Inspiration from the Golden God), but I think that it's a bit of a long shot, so I'm trying Journalism

    ReplyDelete
  61. That first one though; Only took me two or three days to make, it was that simple. But I was really thinking hard about how the lyrics should be.

Try finding the right words to match the tune of the music while keeping it the way you like. If it doesn't work, try another way. Music is flexible like that.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Good luck, Rueben! Journalism sounds cool! :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Sleep bye...

It was nice to see you again, Lav :-)

    Bye Rueben

Good luck in life just sort of in general, both of you

    ReplyDelete
  64. *has a thought*
Hmm... What if Derek knew we went all the way back into the 2012 comments and that's why he made his post now?

Cause it's a pretty cool coincidence that this was posted as soon as we had to move from the most recent one (still in 2014) to the one two years back... Then again, it's probably just really good timing. :P

    ReplyDelete
  65. 'Night, Fabi!

It was nice to see you too. :) Good luck with the performance!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Sorry, Rueben(if you're still here), and anyone else coming on, I have to go too.

    Bethany: Highly exhausting, yes.

General: We will build a shrine in the city in your honour.

Bethany: ... Please don't do that.

General: The other gods and goddesses have shrines here. Why not you?

    Bethany: I am no goddess.

General: And yet you act like one.

Bethany: I do not want a shrine.

General: Then that is your decision.

Bethany: Thank you. I will be leaving, now.

General: Goodbye, Bethany. And thank you.

Bethany: *jumps down from the top of the wall, using her wings to slow her descent* *lands next to Silente*

  115. Can I just mention how cruel Darren Wilson and all those who have done what he did in the past, are?
And that I'm not going to forget that in this day and age, we STILL have racial injustice?
And that a six year old black boy told his father he was afraid to wear hoodies anymore, and that they should stop doing that?
By the way, guys, hi. :P

    ReplyDelete

  134. (Yeah Velvet... I won't go into too much detail, but Adra used to be on the blog every day, like you and me. And then...she and zaf had a fight, and Adra became more and more distant. And now we rarely see her at all...Derek wrote a whole post on bullying because of Zaf...I hate her. I have to admit that I burst out laughing when she died in the book.)
