I thought the title of this entry was smart and funny, effectively conveying the relief at another tour being over and done with in a winning and whimsical manner. But how many of you are going to miss the John Lennon reference and just puzzle at the "Happy Christmas| part? Ah well. Too late now to go changing it.
So, another tour bites the dust. This was a fun one, lots of people turning up, lots of glares and scowls and cakes and pictures and fist-bumps and many, many moody looks into camera... All in a day's work, really. Thanks to everyone who came along — it was tiring but I had a blast.
And now I'm home, and it's time to get organised.
There's going to be some cool news coming your way over the next few weeks and months. Some of it will make you go "Cool!" and some of it will make you grin. Some of it, of course, will make you weep, as it's coming up to that time when I'll have to start plotting out Book Nine. Most of you will still be reeling from the events of LSODM, so you'll know not to trust me. For some reason, the tagline from the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre is floating through my head...
"Who will survive, and what will be left of them?"
The good news is, now that the pressure of editing and touring is off, I'll be able to get back to my regular (ahem) blogging and Twitter routine, so I should be chatting to you guys a little more often than I have been. Hopefully.
The fact is, I'm going to be incredibly busy for the next year. Want a brief rundown on what I have ahead of me?
1) Plot, write and finish Book Nine by March.
2) Work on Mystery Project 2.
3) Write 10 brand new short stories for the Skulduggery Collection out next Summer.
4) Work on Mystery Project 3.
5) Devise, plan and start writing New Book Series by September 2014.
6) Work on Mystery Project 4.
All that, and blog and tweet and play with my nieces. Oh, and my nephew.
Nephew, you say? But Golden God, you don't HAVE a nephew. I do now, gentle Minion. Born this afternoon, weighing in at over 9 pounds, Baby Skulduggery is now part of my Baby Army of Terror, and he is to be feared.
(Okay fine, my sister hasn't OFFICIALLY named him Baby Skulduggery, but come on... How could she NOT?)

Okay, me and my sister and her friends (my friend isn't on the bus Wednesday mornings) were standing at 1. Slipknot Person and his little brother were at 2. The bus arrived behind 2, and Slipknot Person and his little brother started walking towards 1, as the bus was about to drive past them and park further down. It did drive past 2, but it stopped behind Slipknot Person and his little brother, so we, who were walking to the bus from 1, walked past them on our way to the bus. Then they realised they were walking away from the bus and had to turn round. XD
Also . . . today me and my friend went to the village shop, and Slipknot Person and his little brother came in after us and went out before us. O_O
My friend just went, "Holly, bag," and I was confused for a bit but then I looked around and saw Slipknot Person's Slipknot bag and was just standing there grinning like an idiot. XD
I wonder what they were buying. I deduced that they must be buying something in particular, probably, as they must have got off the bus at a different stop and then walked back up to their house.

I feel like Crooks warmed to Lennie, in a way, because of that kind of naive/childlike manner. To some extent, Crooks CAN trust Lennie, because Lennie doesn't understand the discrimination/segregation - he treats everybody equally. I don't think it took Crooks very long to realise that, really.
Crooks is in need of somebody to talk to, and Lennie is somebody who will let him talk to him. What Crooks doesn't realise, maybe, it that the having somebody to actually LISTEN is very different from having somebody to talk to.
Maybe those are kind of opposing takes on it, but IDK.

This is irrelevant, but I had a my-memory-is-so-frighteningly-good moment in French, when we had to write down, without looking, how many adjectives we could remember. The top score was nine, counting masculine and feminine versions as two different words, and I didn't put my hand up (didn't feel like it) and yet I got fourteen (that's including the masculine and feminine versions as one word). O_O And it wasn't like I'd done any extra revision. I'd spent the same amount of time on it as everyone else, perhaps less than some (assuming some spent extra time, which they maybe didn't).

And then I was thinking, "My memory is frighteningly good," and remembered how I'd also remembered something else that day and it was a bit O_O. . .
And then less than two hours later I was trying to remember what else I'd remembered and couldn't, which was vaguely amusing. :P Still can't remember it.

*nods* I did it all this time last year, so I don't have quotes on me, but the 'torture', I think that's seeing a chance for power and taking it. Crooks' status is generally inferior, so if Lennie can't fully comprehend or retaliate, Crooks can kind of exploit that weakness and impose suffering on another person. It gives him power in a conversation - I think Steinbeck used the phrase "private victory".
But yeah. :)

@Taia: He did use the words 'private victory'. And - you are correct, but Crooks couldn't have been that fond of Lennie, or he would be unlikely to put him through that distress. After he'd made his point, he carried on being cruel to Lennie just for the fun of it. He started saying how Lennie would be locked up in a booby hatch with a collar like a dog, which is slightly irrelevant to the point he was trying to make (the point being that Lennie can rely on George), which shows that he cared more about hurting Lennie then he did continuing his rant at that point in time. On the other hand, Crooks hasn't experienced human kindness in a long time, which could explain why he'd mostly forgotten about it.
My mum told me once about this boy she was working with (when she was a youth worker), and some other young people came up to him and asked him was he was doing, genuinely interested, and he just slammed the door in their faces because he was so used to everyone being cruel to him that he automatically lashed out first didn't consider that they might be nice to him. Crooks is like that . . .
