Back in Circulation

Ah, time off... how I love you so... At least, I love the IDEA of you. I love the MENTION of you, the PROMISE of you. But I never quite GET you, do I?

Such is the reality of life as a writer— there IS no time off.

Other people leave the office and go off on holidays, but that's not the case with writers. Oh sure, we can easily walk away from the writing desk, but it's not so easy to flick the switch in our heads that makes us stop thinking of the next thing to write. We're stuck in that headspace. A writer's brain will continue to churn, even when we want to think about other things. It's not a BAD problem to have. It's not as bad as, say, being born without a head or waking up one morning to find your house is made of cheese. But it can get annoying. It means that you can never really relax...

I've had a few days off ever since sending in my first draft of LSODM. The last time I spoke with Nick, my editor, he was halfway through and loving it. Apparently. So that's good. I think. I'm not sure what my feelings are towards this new book. At the moment I'm too close to it, I don't know if it's good or great (or, yikes, bad) so I'm at that stage where uncertainty is tainting everything and I'm just waiting for Nick to finish the whole thing and say "Yeaahhhhh it's... fine... BUT..."

So yes, I've had a few days off since then. Two of which were taken up with meetings. But from Thursday on, I haven't even had to answer the phone. So what have I been doing?

Planning.

I have two short stories to write for various things. I want to do a lot more for the Skulduggery short story collection coming out next year. I need to start thinking of Skulduggery Book Nine. And I have to get a handle of what I'm going to write AFTER. What book is going to coming out in 2015? What will the next series be?

So that's what I've been doing over the weekend.

But now that I have the first draft handed in, hopefully I'll be able to get back to posting here on a weekly basis, and being a bit more present on Twitter, and generally getting things back to normal. You've all been very patient while I've had my head down, and I appreciate it. As a reward, here's a thing.

Star Inkbright said...

I've cried four times at school in foru days. What is WRONG with me????

The first time was when my friend asked why my blogfriends would have depression, the second was when I was thinking about how horrible the Hunger Games (the Games, not the book series) were, the third was when I remembered that in year six I'd dropped my camera in the sea and cried for ages (it was a brand new digital camera that was awesome), and the fourth was because I'd been saying "another child dead" every three seconds (coz a kid dies every three seconds) and then my friend started saying how a parent was right now crying in agony over the body of their dead child, and so on and so forth and it made me sad.

I don't have a clue what's wrong with me, because the only times I ever really cry are when reading a book or watching a movie or listening to music, and then this week. O_O
Plus I was crying at home about stuff like previously mentioned number one, global warming, and yeah.

WHAT IS THIS MADNESS? :P

I'm not even upset, though. I feel normal like normal. I haven't really been worse this week than on other weeks.

SO LIKE WHAT.

Star Inkbright said...

By the way, you know when I was trying to prove that blood was crimson and you were all yelling at me not to hurt myself?

Well, today, my friend had a small wound on her finger and she was complaining about it loads. I told her, take the plaster off, you don't need it and she didn't, so to prove you can have small wounds on your fingers and not need plasters and not act like it's the end of the world I chewed myself a small wound on my thumb, which was bleeding and as large as her small wound (which was apparently the end of the world and worse than large wounds because small wounds are. Yes, because a small nick with a nail is much more painful than a huge deep gash by the knife. That makes utter sense), and she just kind of ignored me. Even though I was like bleeding. And I said it hurt to prove my wound was the same as hers and she was like yeah I told you so. That is the only thing she said to me about my small wound.

Honestly, some friend she is. *shakes head* I could have chopped my fingers off and all she'd say was that her tiny blob hurt worse and ignore me. Like what the hell. I've read The Subtle Knife. Chopping a finger off in extrememly painful and results in great loss of blood.

And yeah.

And on the bus today I started talking about something to my friend. One of my huge long deep-thinking rants and important issues, you know. And she just ignored me and when we got off the bus started talking to her friend when I was still ranting on about whatever.
I'm not annoyed because she should have listened to me, because let's face it, it was pretty irrelevant to her life. But I knew that if I'd done the same on the bus I would have got thoughtful replies and probably a detailed discussion would follow.
And it made me miss you guys.
And I was in a bit off a mood so I ditched her and walked off and spent the next hour just being angry at everything. Everyone in form was talking about the mock and it irritated me so much because I was in a big mood and for God's sake does it matter it's a stupid exam what relevance does it have in the great long scheme of things how can you live just being wrapped up in the little insignificant details of your own narrow life without looking further into the world than a few meters?
Somewhere in the course of first period I calmed down. :P

Sorry, I just like saying stuff. :P

Star Inkbright said...

Sorry guys. I just like to say stuff.

You're all so awesome. *hugs*

And movies I cried in were It's A Wonderful Life (you can't not. Incredible movie. Despite being in black and white. ACtually, we have a black and white and a colour, but my mum said the black and white was better so we watched that one. It's so odd, because when I remember scenes I see them in my head in colour, but they weren't . . .), The Hunger Games, Star Wars (I cried in A New Hope a lot because of memories of Anakin. *laughs* Lol), and others I can't remember, er. :P I could if I tried harder.

Books? I've read a lot more books than I have watched stuff, so I've cried in more, maybe? Can't be bothered to list. :P

I don't generally cry when people die. I cry when people suffer. Although when people are suffering because of death, I cry. So I do cry at death, but not because of the fact someone died.

I haven't cried at Tanith yet. :P

And I always feel sadder when bad guys die to when good guys die, because I find it a big shame that they never got to be good before they died. They never got to UNDERSTAND. That's just a waste of a life, to me.

I always shout at the screen that they can't die because then they'll die bad. :P

The Emperor from Star Wars is one, and Hopper from Bug's Life is another.

Ohmygosh, Bug's Life. BEST KIDS MOVIE EVEREVEREVEREVEREVER.

It has such intense issues for a kids movie! Honestly, the quality of things for kids to weatch has gone depressingly low. *shakes head*

I've said this before, but we watched it the other month and I was like O_O because it's been years and years so I remembered all their voices. I remembered the words. I remembered all the images very very well. I remembered that they had gone there and done that and so on. It was amazingly familiar to me. But I'd never gotten the MEANING before. For the first time, I realised the WHY. I realised what the things they were saying meant. The actual story was brand new, but everything else was burnt onto my memory, and like . . .
My dad had obviously been older than me during my Great Bug's Life Obsession so he was saying all the lines at the time they were being said and getting them all spot-on. All Hopper's speeches and all. XD

In our family, we have a rule about talking in movies ad TV.
You are allowed to talk as much as you like, so long as you don't talk when someone on the screen is speaking.
If someone on the screen is speaking, you have to shut up.

My family says smart remarks and makes clever observations and infers meaning and stuff. :)

AND HEY HEY HEY this is irrelevant but when I saw the this-is-what-happens-next-week for the Doctor Who episode that aired last week I was just like O_O!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because a night or two before the Christmas Special, I dreamt about Doctor Who. I was dreaming the Christamas Special, but obviously the actual Christmas Special was totally different.

My dream special involved a load of not-wriggling-or-moving-or-objecting people dressed in white being in this big metal contraption that lowered them into a massive bowl of substance.
And like what the hell.
BECAUSE IN THE EPISODE LAST WEEK THERE WAS THE IMAGE OF LOTS OF PEOPLE DRESSED IN WHITE BEING LOWERED BY A METAL THINGY INTO A MASSIVE BOWL OF SUBSTANCE AND THEY WEREN'T WRIGGLING OR OBJECTING OR ANYTHING.

Did I dream the future?
Because my dream dreamed exactly how things were in that scene, I swear.
I can't remember my dream very well, but the Doctor was trying to stop people getting dunked. It involved him walking on the metal contraption undoing people, I think.

So not reall the same except for that one thing.

But ohmygosh.

Oh, and in my dream the contraption was painted white, it was in the episode, right?

The contraption was identical in my dream to in the episode.

Mary Contrary said...

@Star: *nods* That seems to be the biggest difficulty with trying to fix things. People just don't pay attention.

Hiya, Aisling. :)

Oh. Actually, I may have cried in Doctor Who, in one of David Tennant's episodes. I don't remember which one, but I'm SURE I did...

I don't cry always when people die. Sometimes it's just things that they say/do/imply/provoke. In books, I mean.
Like, the Mayor and Davy Prentiss Jr, and 1017, they didn't need to die to tug tears from me. ^^

I don't remember A Bug's Life. It's been so long since I saw it.

A lot of songs make me cry. A LOT.
I've heard more songs than films though, I think. And probably more than books, too...

IT WAS TELEPATHY THAT WE BOTH SATRTED TALKING ABOUT DOCTOR WHO AT THE SAME TIME!

@Taia: I cried at Chaos Walking! :)

Not sure what at, though. Only read it once.

Hey, I found it so interesting how 1017 hated Todd and not Davy because Todd knew how horrible he was being.

I adored the whole branding thing, too. Part of what inspired my new story idea I haven't written yet.

And I've mentioned this before, because I mention this every time, but in Chaos Walking, everyone getting connected up to one mind is the good thing, whereas in BZRK, it's the bad thing. The other choice is freedom of thought and lots of suffering, and that's the good thing in BZRK, and the bad thing in Chaos Walking.
Although in BZRK it isn't totally THIS IS GOOD AND THIS IS BAD.
The main question of the book, which is also on the cover, is 'Happiness or freedom?'

Believe

"Believe when you lie, teaching the art of deception. It is the teacher speaking to the student. The theologians continuing their legacy of lies. For the perpetuation of such false beliefs, penance can't absolve your sin."

Believe
When you lie
You will never need to recognize yourself
To deceive
To remove all chance of doubt and be received
With your lie
The deception is complete when you concede
And decide
To reject your lives
Sacrificed to me

Penance can't absolve your sin
Into me!
Penance can’t absolve your sin
All your belief
Cannot absolve your sin
All your belief
Cannot asolve your sin

Believe
When you lie
You will never need to recognize the source
Of deceit
To renew your faith in God
You must believe
In your lie
The redemption is complete when you conceive
And decline
To release your lives
Sacrificed to me

Penance can't absolve your sin
Into me!
Penance can’t absolve your sin
All your belief
Cannot absolve your sin
All your belief
Cannot asolve your sin

Reap your life
Like you want to
Recognize
All you've come to
Reap you rlife
Like you want to
Recognise
All you've come to
Reap your life
Veiled in shadow
Recognize
Faces of the crucified
I can hear their screams tonight
Ever haunting me
Burn your lie into me

Penance can't absolve your sin
Into me!
Penance can’t absolve your sin
All your belief
Cannot absolve your sin
All your belief
Cannot asolve your sin
All your belief
Cannot absolve your sin

Star Inkbright said...

@Aisling: OHMYGOSH, REALLY????????? *laughs* IDIOTS!

And yes, my friend can dream the future. She doesn't do it much usually (I think), but she had this one week where she kept on dreaming stuff and it came true.
She dreamt there was going to be a fire alarm and she told us.
The next day, the fire alarm went off.
She told us watch out because she'd dreamt someone we knew was in hospital, and later that day we found out this girl we knew was in hospital (broken arm).
She told us she'd dreamt this person (she gave us a name) would be ill.
She was.

Yeah. :) That's all in one week, plus she told me two other dreams she'd had before the fire alarm one came true that came true, but I never saw proof and I forgot what one of them was. The other was that her friend didn't go to Craft club.

Recurring dreams are scary . . .

Sometimes I have dreams I've had before, but it's not exactly the same - the second time, I'm aware I'm doing it for the second time and for some reason I have to make it be exactly the same as the first time, so it's basically full of me thinking "Oh yeah, the first time we did this, I remember now, so now that has to happen."

I think teenagers, because hormones, get vivider dreams than otherwise.
I also think that people can see the future in dreams because time is basically loads of layers, that you can't see through, but sometimes in dreams you can see through a few layers and catch a glimpse. This glimpse you see . . . Well, dreams are basically your brain being imaginative, so the brain, whilst dreaming, imagines and dreams around them, which is why the future you dream won't be dead on - just a detail or two will be similar.

And now, brb. :(

Everyone always is suprised over it. Then they snap their fingers. Which is annoying. :P

It is interesting? Oh. I'd never noticed. Thanks. :)

IT MESSES WITH MY BRAIN LIKE A SCIENTIFIC PARAGRAPH THAT USES SCEINTIFIC SCIENCE WORDS IN A SCIENTIFIC TEXTBOOK FOR SCIENTIFIC SCIENCE.

Aisling Dubh said...

Missy that is a freaky coincidence.

Mary Contrary said...

Welcome back, Star!

Science is real. :3

Star Inkbright said...

SONGS BE FREAKY!

And, actually, Ieni, no, I haven't got your email . . . O_O

And I am a believer in telepathy. You know when you randomly start thinking about something for no apparent reason and then someone says something about it?

Has happened to me a few times. :)

So maybe the layers principal works there. Maybe you can see through some of the layers to the future consciously, but not as much so. Which is why these things only happen in seconds.
Maybe we started talking about dreams because our brains could see through the layers to you, subconsciously? Idk.

Ow, brain hurting. :P

And this minor telepathy appears tto work over the internet, so I think it is seeing through to the future a glimpse.

I though of DW for no random reason when I mentioned it, didn't I?
My brain saw through to Ais.

But then the future is probably not fixed, because you probably see how it probably will be. However, once you've seen it it then alters your thoughts a smidge so you mention, for example, DW, which you wouldn't if you hadn't seen the future subconsciously.

However, I would porbably have mentioned about me dreaming the DW episode anyway once Ais mentioned DW, so it didn't alter future that much.

So the main difference is that you think of thinks seconds before you would otherwise.

Which isn't much different.

Question. Can anyobody think about this without it hurting their brain?

Aisling Dubh said...

Star nope. I can think about it np but it does hurt my brain.

Aisling Dubh said...

*it but

Where did that np even come from?

Star Inkbright said...

@Castiel: Hello. What's going on? Well, it's blue. Other things may be occuring, but the only one that matters is it being blue. It's blue. Very blue. It's BLUE. Did I mention, it's blue?

Lucy-Leigh Iridescent (Leigh) said...

Hello Castiel and Taia :)

Aisling Dubh said...

Yes the absolute most important thing is that it's blue!!!

Lucy-Leigh Iridescent (Leigh) said...

Um, what exactly is blue?

Alice (Or Tyler to some) said...

It's Blue?

....right....Hello Lucy-leigh

Star Inkbright said...

@Leigh: IT is blue. *nods*

Ah, I emailed Eve once saying it was blue and she spent the next few emails trying pretty hard to work out what on earth WAS blue. :P

The real answer is, I don't have a clue.

BUT IT'S BLUE. :)

I'm amazed, Castiel, that you haven't heard that it is blue too. I am slolwy converting the world. Empathise on the 'slowly'.

@Star: Because you're awesomeness? ;)

Lucy-Leigh Iridescent (Leigh) said...

So, what do you do here? :)

Lucy-Leigh Iridescent (Leigh) said...

Oh, did I do something? O.O

Maegan Harty said...

Whats your ded?

Lucy-Leigh Iridescent (Leigh) said...

I'll sound stupid asking this, but... what's a 'ded'?

Mary Contrary said...

@Lucy-Leigh: Every two-hundred comments a new comment page is automatically started.
We have a tradition of sorts, that if you get first on a page, you can dedicate the page to whatever you'd like,'Ded' being the dedication. :)

Maegan Harty said...

@taia
Actually that was another idea of mine!
But imagine this laptop in one hand and umbrella in the other how would you type?

Maegan Harty said...

@Lucy
A ded is a dedication when your comment is first on a new page you dedicate it to for example like i dedicate this page to laptops

Lucy-Leigh Iridescent (Leigh) said...

Oh. Thanks, Taia :)

Um... I dedicate this page to... LSoDM, Derek, this blog, um... Little Mix, One Direction and... uhm. The Simpsons Tapped Out iPad game which is obsessive. :P

Lucy-Leigh Iridescent (Leigh) said...

And thanks too, Maegan :)

Maegan Harty said...

@Taia: It was an acident. XD
Although I did draw her eyes slightly differently to the picture.

The picture is my guide - not trying to copy it perfectly this time.
It's stupid, if I can make it look better. :)
