Back in Circulation

Ah, time off... how I love you so... At least, I love the IDEA of you. I love the MENTION of you, the PROMISE of you. But I never quite GET you, do I?

Such is the reality of life as a writer— there IS no time off.

Other people leave the office and go off on holidays, but that's not the case with writers. Oh sure, we can easily walk away from the writing desk, but it's not so easy to flick the switch in our heads that makes us stop thinking of the next thing to write. We're stuck in that headspace. A writer's brain will continue to churn, even when we want to think about other things. It's not a BAD problem to have. It's not as bad as, say, being born without a head or waking up one morning to find your house is made of cheese. But it can get annoying. It means that you can never really relax...

I've had a few days off ever since sending in my first draft of LSODM. The last time I spoke with Nick, my editor, he was halfway through and loving it. Apparently. So that's good. I think. I'm not sure what my feelings are towards this new book. At the moment I'm too close to it, I don't know if it's good or great (or, yikes, bad) so I'm at that stage where uncertainty is tainting everything and I'm just waiting for Nick to finish the whole thing and say "Yeaahhhhh it's... fine... BUT..."

So yes, I've had a few days off since then. Two of which were taken up with meetings. But from Thursday on, I haven't even had to answer the phone. So what have I been doing?

Planning.

I have two short stories to write for various things. I want to do a lot more for the Skulduggery short story collection coming out next year. I need to start thinking of Skulduggery Book Nine. And I have to get a handle of what I'm going to write AFTER. What book is going to coming out in 2015? What will the next series be?

So that's what I've been doing over the weekend.

But now that I have the first draft handed in, hopefully I'll be able to get back to posting here on a weekly basis, and being a bit more present on Twitter, and generally getting things back to normal. You've all been very patient while I've had my head down, and I appreciate it. As a reward, here's a thing.

@Star: If that means you should be locked up in an asylum, then it means that I should be joining you there, since I agree with you.

It's odd. I hate the idea of killing, yet I believe that if a tonne of us were killed, it'd be GOOD.

Gah. Gotta go. Bbs.

I read in a science textbook the other day that . . . well, you know if the fox population explodes, they'll eat all the rabbits, then they'll have no food and die out?
Well, the human population is exploding, and we're using up all our resources. Sooner or later we will die out too.

My gosh, they teach us such horrible stuff about us as w hole killing ourselves and yet nobody does a damn thing about it. I don't . . . why? Why don't all the kids in the world feel desperate to save us? I do.

This is relatively unrelated, but the other day in History me and my friend were researching the first atom bomb.

It's horrible and sick how everyone bombed that city in Japan and then were all happy and cheering over it.

If that had happened in a fiction book, it would have been deemed as a violent book and the people who sent the bomb would have been the evil bad guys.

But it's real life.

So like what.

*is actually crying irl*

Lewis Ravenscroft / Rhydian Blake said...

Don't cry Star *hugs* Don't cry

Star Inkbright said...

What I mean is, we're a horrible species and the real world is a horrible, horrible place, and the books which are deemed violent only come a little near the truth.

My friend said she didn't like THG and I was like what and somewhere in the debate I said that how they were forced to killl each other was sick and messed up, and she was like exactly, why would I want to read about that?
And I was like, because it's a portrayle of some of the situations that exist in real life, and the world is a horrible horrible place and people are just sick and horrible.

I am less skilled with words and more liable to stumble and/or repeat myself and/or not explain my points well irl. :P

But yes. Real life is like that. D:

What was I saying again?

Star Inkbright said...

That depends, Rhydian.

I don't want everyone to be wiped out. I want most animals and some humans to survive. If everyone died, that would be BAD thing.

You have to think, though. If you somehow planned lots of people to die to save the world, what are the chances you wouldn't kill yourself in it? If this master plan meant you dying as well, would you do it?
I don't want everyone to die if I have to die too. I want to have a future. I want to have a shot at a normal life.
I'm incredibly selfish.
Hmm.
I shall probably spend the next few days battling with my thoughts until I convince myself that I would be able to die in this master plan.
Not that it will happen. -_-

Blogland Collaboration said...

In all your complaining about it, have you ever even tried to think about anything that could actually be done to help? Ranting isn't doing to do a 0222101031142412 thing!

Bad. The human race does not need to completely be exterminated, and if Darquesse killed the world, what makes you think she wouldn't kill all the animals? So many of them are dependent on humans, anyway, it's sickening.

And I'm actually leaving again, methinks. When I start releasing torrents of hate like this, I'm only going to get meaner from here, and it's better not to be around friends I might hurt.

Hello helicopter, are you here to stay?

And one day we'll get the best of them
Hello helicopter, will you be my friend?
Will you take me away?

Hello helicopter, have you heard the news?
No one gives a sh*t about the things they do
We all waste and consume, destroy and ruin everything we touch
It's easy not to think when you're not told that much

I'm not saying anything you haven't heard before
I'm just trying to understand the way we are

Hello helicopter, are you lost out there?
Swimming through the garbage dump that fills the air
In several more years no one will care
They'll be rich and dead
So let somebody else devise a cure for it

I'm not saying anything you haven't heard before
I'm just trying to understand the way we are

Nobody seems to care
Nobody ever learns
Hello helicopter, are you here to stay?
Bodies, rest and motion fighting night and day
Well it's kill or be killed
And one day we'll get the best of them
Hello helicopter, are you listening?

Nobody seems to care
Nobody ever learns

Are we ever going to get it right?
Are we ever going to start making sense
And stop pretending that we care?

Are we ever going to get it right?
Are we ever going to start making sense
And stop pretending that we care?

Are we ever going to get it right?
Are we ever going to start making sense
And stop pretending..?

Hello helicopter, are you here to stay?

In AF once they said that it was more expensive in the long term to keep the dome going, but the whoeveritwasincharge reasoned that by the time the long term came around, someone else would be in the office.
I remembered that especially because it shows how politicians work.
In the short term, selling off all the gas and electric and water seemed like a good idea. In the short term, giving away the buses seemed like a good idea.
Now, in the future, we have realised it was a terrible idea.
But it benefitted Margaret Thatcher at the time, so why should she bother about how good it was for the people?
(I'm not saying she thought this. She may have done, or she may not. I can't see what she was thinking. I'm just using an example.)

My friend at school said why bother to save the planet because by the time the effects happened we'd all be dead anyway so it wouldn't affect us.

She actually said that.

I think I felt like punching her.

That's like stabbing a random stranger in the heart and going well that's okay because I'm still alive.

In RS (yes, here's me having a go at RS again. I can't help it. I fucking hate it. It makes me so fucking angry. Asdfghjkl. For more information on how angry I get at RS and why, please ask. If you are sensible, don't mention it, and you'll avoid the rant), we've started doing about animal cruelty (although we're finding out about animals first), and in our very first lesson we had to do "What makes humans different to animals?"
No no no no NO. TERRIBLE way to begin the lesson. Argh asdfghjkl RS I hate you so much. Because of course this immediately made everyone look at our differences, go all 'us and them', and then copy out the differences, which are largely to do with how humans are better than animals, and then think about how stupid and weak animals are compared to humans.

I just hate RS so, so much.

It's a terrible subject that achieves the opposite of what it is there to do.

@Star: On the topic of animals and on RS, I agree. The way RS addresses topics actually irritates me a great deal.

I suppose humans have our positive aspects too. Even if they are grossly outweighed...

Star Inkbright said...

Okay.

My dad, being from Liverpool, hated her. Liverpool as a whole hated her.

My mum, whom I got my objectivity from, was against a lot of the things she did and all that, and is against her as a Prime Minister, but she isn't a person who hates much.

My parents are both against the Tories.

For example, when they came to power just now, they cut lots of stuff to save money. One of the things they cut were loads of good projects doing good stuff and benefitting people.

Then they realised that they needed more jobs, so are trying to set more of those projects up, but they're having to start from scracth whereas the old ones already had been going for years.

Idiots. :P

They aren't very good at doing what's best for the less well off people, my mum says.

(I get basically all my views on politics from my mum. Nobody else ever really says anything about it to me, so)

They're also getting rid of all the youth workers and turning them into social workers. My mum is a youth worker, right, and she's annoyed at this for many reasons. One of them is, the young people they work with have already been tried to be helped my the social worker way and it hasn't worked so that's why they're with the youth workers. If you make everybody into social workers, you lose a lot of good work you could do with young people. Another thing is, they're expecteding volunteers to be able to do lots of stuff youth workers do, but my mum says it won't work, because the youth service is properly trained to do stuff so they'll do a better job, and also they're paid to do a good job. Volunteers aren't paid, so they won't be bothered to do the jobs throughly and well, and they won't be bothered to do as much.
Furthermore, the whole youth service has been trained to do things the youth service way, and now they're completely turning all that training on its head. Nobody is good at it and they aren't comofrtable with it. There's a reason everyone became youth workers and not social workers.
Also, they now have to do lots of forms and assessments and reports, and a lot of young people who come to their clubs and stuff won't be able to do all the forms, or won't want to do offical stuff, or won't want to be under constant scrutiny, so they'll lose all those people.
My mum said her boss actually told her that the signed piece of paper was worth more than the young people they were trying to help. She was pretty angry/upset about that.
And they're cutting (damn the Tories) all this stuff. My mum's young parents group has an unheard-of number of members and everyone is saying it's the best thing under the earth. Sooner or later, most most likely sooner, it'll be cut or whatever.

I could go on about my mum's job for a while. XD

In my last RS assessment I sneaked in a paragraph about how badly they taught about religion and underlined it. XD
I was kind of disappointed when I didn't get told off.
Maybe I need to try harder. :)
I've never had a adetention, so my first might as well be for something worthwhile. :)

Mary Contrary said...

@Star: *nods* Most people around where I live have a strong disliking of Margaret Thatcher (I won't even start about the time my form tutor told us HIS opinion of her O.O), because the things that she did had very negative affects on almost everybody who lives here.
I don't hate her, though I do disagree with some things that she has done, but I notice with situations like this, you don't often hear about the good things which have been done by these people as well, and we can't say what was going through their minds. For that reason, I don't like to judge them, whether I agree with the result or not.
I'm not really sure where I was going with this. I think it was that I agree with your mother and you. But also that maybe that's because of the influence I get from the area I live in. Equally it may not.

Um. Yeah. :P

Star Inkbright said...

@Flora: Oh? Thanks. :)

I'm always thinking. I have deep views on the world. I honestly do not comprehend how people can live without thinking deep thoughts about the world. It would be like living in a box and never travelling anywhere, seeing anything, doing anything. Always splashing in the shallows, barely noticing the deep. I'm probably being unfair and stereotyping, but it's like reading books. I don't get people who never read. I don't understand how they can just stay in their life. It's so boring. I can't imagine why they don't explore worlds, look at everything.
Thinking is the same as reading, just thinking is thinking and reading is reading. XD

I say that books are metaphors for real life. The whole Darquesse thing . . . everyone irl has a dark side. Darquesse is showing how people do and how it feels to have a dark side, expect irl they are nameless and less easy to look as as a different person. Everyone has a dark side. In some people they emerge more than in others.
So when you read a book, you essentially read about real life. YOu explore the world. You learn how it is to be other people, how it feels to be in different scenarios.

If you never read . . . You're only ever one person. One life. A few situations. One perspective.

How can people live like that?

How are you going to celebrate?"

THAT WEBSITE MUST HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR HER DEATH FOR SO LONG. XD

Hiya, Flora!
If jumping around the kitchen singing badly and eating ice cream is included in maturity, then count me in. :P
Uh, I guess a lot of what I read, and what I listen to music-wise, and the people who I look up to because of those things have massive influence on my own opinions and the things that I think about.
And also issues like this maybe become increasingly evident in every day life as stuff like global warming and general global badness is stressed more in education and stuff? IDK. :P

One more thing that I love about Blogland is how these things can be talked about, here (That doesn't happen IRL, I swear xD). I spend a lot of time thinking about people and things and life, and I look for different approaches and perspectives until I can find something that I'm comfortable to stick with. It's good to be able to think and discuss it with others, because I think it's important to share those perspectives and approaches and opinions and blah.
Again, I don't know where I'm going with this... :P

Newton Faulkner? Yeah, brilliant. :)
I only actually know about a half of an album of his, but somehow, even after the almost-six years that I've known that less-than-half an album, I feel like those eight songs are just so perfect that I don't need to listen to the others. That, to me, is pretty impressive. :)

I told my friend on the bus today that 'distorted' began with 'dist', ended in 'ed', had an 'r' as the sixth letter and had nine letters so therefore it was more like the word 'disturbed' than the word 'disabled', because that word had only seven letters and it began with only 'dis', although it did end it 'ed' and had a 'b' in the middle.

Because I believe constantly thinking about violence makes you more violent. It's like, when I think about my character not feeling great, then when I come back to myself it takes me a moment to remember that I'm feeling fine and I'm okay. I also feel slightly less good because I've been thinking about feeling bad.
If you think about being violent, you will eventually start be being violent in your life, because you're so used to thinking about it.

*shrugs* But I agree - it's also like reading books. If we never understand how violent people think, how are we meant to empathise with them?
Also, I believe we should know about all the bad things going on in our world, because it's our world, and we should know about it so we can prevent things and deal with them. If we ignore bad things . . . How does that solve anything? *resists urge to start singing Opinion again*

Blogland Collaboration said...

Oh... Some people are really mad at me, gtg, I think.

Star Inkbright said...

I also supposes it depends how much you read into the music . . .

This isn'tcompetely off-subject but it's making an entirely different point to the one I was saying, just warning. In Gone, there's a character called Drake. His stepdad always used to beat his mum up, and Drake learnt from him, so now whenever he fancies a girl he wants to hurt her. He also thinks, surely they must enjoy it? Surely, because . . . I forgt the because, but it was something about his mother. He thought that that was what you did to people when you liked them.

He's messed up, but yeah.
It's not entirely relevant, but say you love a band/singer and they do this . . . You might think that it's okay or the right thing to do, because they're your role model. Also, this is why peopl need good parents. If someone thinks a bad thing is oaky, acceptable and not bad, they will do it. THey have to be taught when kids that this and that is NOT okay.
And this is partially why hero-worshipping celebrities is bad.

If I AM distant, I will ignore many comments and reply only to a few. And I'll often miss comments. I'll often read three comments, rpely to the latest one, post and THEN remember the other two. XD

@Fabi: HI!

Star Inkbright said...

And brb. :(

I got killed of in BFB. IT WAS AWESOME.

Mary Contrary said...

*hugs Fabi* I hope it's Okay. Bye.

@Star: That's a good point, actually, and I guess it comes down also to the song and the message that the listener takes from it, maybe?
I agree that having something constantly around you, or on your mind, could have an affect on your behaviour and the way you act/think/feel, but it depends largely on the person, and the circumstance at hand.
I don't really know how to put it into words. I guess, if you think of the nature versus nurture argument, I'd say that both are influential, and depending on one, the other might have a hugely different effect.
So, if you consider the music the environmental factor, then the effect it has on one person could be the very opposite of that which it has on the other, because they're different people with different brains and genes and experiences and current situations.

Alastair Cruciatus said...

Hi people!!! *supertacklehugs everyone*

Mary Contrary said...

@Star: That not-relevant point is something which I take a lot of interest in. I guess there are a lot of ways of looking at it.
What I believe is that everything that happens to or around a person affects them in some way, and also affects how other things affect them.
As for the whole 'nature' thing, that some people are just naturally the way that they are because they simply ARE, I think that that probably has an influence on the person's behaviour and how they're affected by things and all of the above, but, imo, the environmental is a lot more influential.

(I study psychology, and it's probably the most interesting thing I have studied. Almost everything in psychology, I think, can probably be brought back to nature/nurture, and there's a lot of debate as to which has the most important effect.
I don't think that was directly relevant to the not-relevant-thing, but it's what came out of my brain, so, meh. :P)

I want to study psychology! :)

Very interesting. *nods* *stores info in brain*

Hunter stores everything in boxes in a room in his mind. I just kind of leave them flosting around . . . :P

It's so odd how we think out of nothing. Okay, we think out of our brains, but we kind of pull thoughts from thin air, and everything we remember, we just kind of put into nothingness and hope it'll drift out when we want it too. I can't exactly explain it. Just imagine taking things (thouhts etc.) in and out of your head. You kind of disposit them in an empty space and leave them to do whatever, drift, get muddled up, combine . . . Then you just expect to be able to reach in and pull it out without problem.

I'm not explaining the sensation at all, but ohmygosh, it's so odd. O_O

Hm. :/ Sounds tricky, Aretha. I guess either just keep working on it, or try taking a break from it. Sometimes not concentrating on something can help to find a way of working it out. Kinda.

I'm good, thanks. Drawing, music, and some good thinking leave me in a good mood. :3

Oh, I haven't deded this page yet. I should probably do that.

I dedicate this page to music. It's such a sanctuary from troubles. Whether it's One Direction or Disturbed, Little Mix or Evanescence, Hayley Westenra or Nine Inch Nails, Enya or Kelly Clarkson, Adele or AC/DC, Florence + the Machine or Josh Groban, Coldplay or Celtic Woman, They Might Be Giants or Loreena McKennitt, [insert the name of your favorite band/singer here] or music you make yourself, music is wonderful and can keep you going when you're upset.

Also to windows, birds, mop, bunny ears, black colored pencils, bubbles and all you awesome people. [points at Ari, Taia, Star, Ieni, Mara, Tyler, Jubi, Zaf, Arratay, Lucy, Ruá, Death, Missy and everyone else I was too lazy to type the name of]

Mary Contrary said...

Hiya Aisling!
*nods* We did that in Primary, too. Good fun. :3 Are you looking forward to leaving?

I had a bunch of friends/acquaintances leaving secondary last year, though, and I noticed that the levels of insanity seemed to be higher. But then, my primary school was very small, so there wasn't very much opportunity for insanity, really. :P

Hiya, Brad!

@Luci: Sounds cool. :P I don't know what happens here, except for the shirt-graffiti. :P
A notepad for messages?
Well, messages get woven into the shirt-grafitti, here. Maybe it's a similar kind of thing (ish)? ^^

Star Inkbright said...

@Taia: Gah, I hate the online textbook. This year in French we don't get paper textbooks to take home with us; we have to do everything on the online one. This is annoying. For one thing, it's more inconvenient and messing with the zoom and stuff, and for another, it won't load for a lot of people, and for another, turning papers takes longer than flipping them over irl, and for another, it takes longer what with switching on the computer and getting sidetracked and finding the textbook and all, and for another, you can't read more than one excersise at a time or it's too small so you can't scan for anything, and for another, I just prefer real books and can work from them better, and for another, I just dislike it. I want a proper textbook. Maybe it's somethin to do with me doing a lot of reading, but . . . It isn't a proper textbook if it isn't a proper textbook. I want a material THING. I can look at it all and interpret it better and stuffs.
The only ups are that it saves paper and money and that you can do listening excercise on them.

Star Inkbright said...

It's identical to the real textbook, it's just not real. :P

Alice (Or Tyler to some) said...

I'm thinking of drawing most of us sitting in a classroom , with someone saying hi to Brad...*sorryBrad!!*

Aisling Dubh said...

I'm glad that the school I'm going to has proper books not online ones. Particularly after what you say about them Star. They just sound so awkward and annoying.

Alice (Or Tyler to some) said...

Time to get drawing, anyone want a particular style to their person??

Mary Contrary said...

Bye Brave!

@Aisling: *nods* Ah, Can you still keep in touch via, like, phone/internet/meeting up at places? That can be pretty good, even it's not very regular. :)

@Star: Oh. :P
I prefer physical versions of things as opposed to the digital, too. It helps to persuade me that it's real, so I can understand it better.
My school doesn't even let us take textbooks home with us. It's like, 'You want to use a textbook? I have a detention-session this lunchtime, you're welcome to join and use it then.' :P.
Some teachers (like my current Welsh teacher) don't even let you take your EXERCISE books home.
My RS teacher doesn't let us take anything home with us. Which seems a little stupid, considering the final exam is in a month's time. o0

Star Inkbright said...

THEY ARE. :)

In German we have real textbooks. In French we just switched. :P

Very msd.

Luciana said...

We have to use Kerboodle instead of text books in both French and Spanish ;-;

Mary Contrary said...

@Castiel: That's a really awesome idea. :3
If your drawing me, go with whatever your brain comes up with. *has no preference, because no OC/bio.* :P

In German, we looked at the printing dates of our textbooks, and I'm sure they were, like, fifteen years old. xD

Mary Contrary said...

Printing dates?
Publishing dates?
Meh. You know what I mean. :P

Star Inkbright said...

I cannot be surprised at such stuypidity from someone who teaches the subject of RS.

Sorry. :P Just had to say it.

I can just understand real boks better. *frowns*
It's just how my brain works.

You know how dyslexic people can only read things properly if the background is a certain colour?

It may be a very very very very mild similar version of that.

Maybe we're all partially dyslexic . . . Actually, that would make complete, utter sense if we were. :)

Alice (Or Tyler to some) said...

Right, okay Taia

Star Inkbright said...

Very very very very very very mild. *nods*

I can read things on a screen perfectly well.

I have nothing against dyslexia; I just don't want you to think that's the probelm.

The problem is, online textbooks are annoying.

And that's not really a probelm, it's just something to moan about. :P

Aisling Dubh said...

Sorry for poofing

Taia yes I'd say we can still keep in touch that way.

Gtg night

Mary Contrary said...

* you're
*glares at self for that error*

@Star: I get you. :P
I understand things better when I have the physical text in front of me, rather than on a screen, too.
I'm pretty glad we don't have online textbooks. They sound stupid. ^^

Mary Contrary said...

I mean, silly. Rather than stupid. I think. Uh.

Bye Ais!

*frowns*
I feel like I'll probably ruin this if I colour it. :P
I think I'll leave it 'til tomorrow and put it through the scanner first. :P

Star Inkbright said...

This girl in my Strings group has very mild dyslexia, but she still gets extra time on tests etc.

She's awesome and all, but I think that's grossly unfair and if I was her (I hate cheating. I feel like I've not achieved it properly. I like doing things thoroughly and properly so I can have a sense of achievement at the end. It's just how I am), I would insist that I do my test in the same time as everyone else, otherwise I would never know how good I ACTUALLY was at anything. I would want to know how I would do on the same level as everyone else. Because what's the good of being one of the best in the class (she's smart, so she is actually good at a lot of stuffs) if you can't feel like you're there because you ARE good at whatever?

On the other hand, some people are just better at some things than others and it's how they're born. Then how is it fair that they can be better than other people who try harder? *frowns*
This is why we should be setted. So we can all try hard and all strive to be good without some people trying really hard and yet doing badly whilst some people just do nothing and are effortlessly at the top.
We should all be given equal chances to try hard so the people who DO try hard can shine.

You know how some people who are not so academically great get loads of tutoring and extra help so are on the same level as smart people?
I resent this, because if we smart people had the same amount of learning and studying as they did, we would be like WHOOOOOOOOOOOSH.
If I'm really good at something, I want to be the BEST at it. I want to look around the class with the highest level and feel pleased.
If I'm bad or meh at something, or even slightly good at something, I generally couldn't care all that much about it.
But when I'm properly good at something, I hate it when people look as good at me. I'm always like noooooooooooo and I feel really annoyed.
So I don't think it's fair that less-good people can just make me look everage when I am actually better than them, they're just better-trained.

I am aware how horribly selfish and I-am-better-than-you I'm sounding. This is just how I am. :P

Star Inkbright said...

I read that over, and . . . I think I just like feeling like in a fair test, I end up being better than everyone else. XD

This is probably a big flaw. :P

Star Inkbright said...

Very msd, remember. :(

Mary Contrary said...

@Star: I wouldn't call that selfish, Star, and I understand what you mean.

But if the people who are not so academically great don't get the help that they need, then they have less opportunities than those who don't need it, don't they. So unequal chances, in that sense?

I think it's less about what's put into it, and more about what comes out, at least with schools. The aim of the school is to teach people to the point that they can get grades and get through the school, even if that means giving some the advantage over others.

If you're already at a higher level, but want to put in more work and excel even more, then that's great, but as far as the school's concerned, there is no need, I think, because you can already do as much as THEY need you to. ^^

Zanida Laufeydottir Queen of Asgard (Zafira Kerias) said...

Well i feel sick

Mary Contrary said...

*don't they?

(The question mark has importance. *nods*)

As for wanting to feel that you're better than other people, if put to a 'fair' test, well, doesn't everybody? :P
It's always nice to know that you can do better than somebody. Especially when there's that specific person who's always been better at something than you (or always thinks that they are). You get a higher grade than them in the exam, and it's like BAM! And then I have to try not to be all 'IN YOUR FACE-' about it. :P

Aw, I hope you're feeling better very soon, Zaf.
