How are we all?
Are we all nervous? Terrified, even? Are we all dreading December 21st, the last day on Earth as predicted by the Mayans? Although, as Jon Stewart pointed out on The Daily Show, the Mayans haven't exactly got the best track record as far as predicting the end of civilisations go... to wit, the Mayans...
But I digress.
So how will you be spending the last day on Earth? Will you be surrounded by loved ones? Will you be sobbing into a tub of ice cream? Will you, in fact, forget all about the end of the world because you still haven't got your Christmas shopping done?
Or will you be reading a very special end-of-the-world short story as posted on this very Blog- a short story that will ONLY be available on the 21st and 22nd before being taken down- in which Skulduggery and Valkyrie track down the cause of the world's destruction and do their very best to avert it? A short story called "The Button"?
Hmm? Is THAT what you'll be doing?

Right. What's happening in your head? What's going to happen?
*Lorcan stands and takes a breath. He has plenty of anger inside of him over so much. But does he actually want to take it out on his mother? He thinks it over and over and wonder if it's wise, she was after all giving him permission.
He steadies himself on the balls of his feet and starts to charge. He tackles her to the ground and starts to throw punches. Every third one was getting Em on her shoulders or arms. He tried so hard not to get her face. All the while Em was encouraging him.
He jumps back off her and waits until she is back on her feet. In the blink of an eye, he shifts and charges towards Em again. He grabs her throat and pins her against the tree. Anger blocking his reason or his sense in training. It was just there*
*Em gulps silently as she tries to keep her heartbeat slow as not to alarm Lorcan. What was she thinking? She doesn't have a wolf to protect her anymore, she can't equal him. She lets him just hold her there, hoping that he can get his control back*

Sealing the other names would only prevent others from using them. It would have no other effect. I would need Aretha because I am perfectly capable of cutting out my own heart and sealing the veins and arteries around it, but somehow my blood would have to keep circulating without a heart while I carve in the appropriate symbols. Eliminating Mevolent is an option to solve half of the problem, certainly, however that is easier said than done.

The copy of me is essentially the same person as me; same name, history, disciplines, so he would have the same ability to steal names that I do. It is quite possible, because the names I have stolen are technically fused with my first name, that in attempting to steal one name, all the rest would go with it, including my own, and I shudder to consider the kind of agony that would come with such an attempt, but it is also possible that he could separate the names before stealing them and manage to pull it off. The variables to account for would be numerous, but it could work! In all my years, I have never considered such a possibility. *shakes head, still smiling* I must be fortune's fool.

Em: Lorcan, I know you can hear me sweetheart. Please you need to rest before you lose all energy. Please.
*Lorcan swipes and catches the arm that Em is holding out in front of her, scratching all up her arm. She cries out.*

Now, as I mentioned, the variables would be astounding. There's the matter of either convincing or manipulating the copy of me into stealing the names to begin with. Then, of course, there is the matter of whether or not he would be able to separate my name from the others; which must be possible, because each time I steal a name my discipline becomes less potent and I cannot steal the name in its entirety, but the difficulty lies in the questionable ability of choosing which pieces of the name to steal and which ones to leave behind. After that there would be the difficulty of ridding ourselves of the copy who had stolen the names. *pauses for a minute, and speech slows as he continues, his handwriting becoming more careful* Then again, perhaps I ought to steal the names from him, rather than the other way round. That would indisputably be the more feasible option.
*She grabs his arm and pulls him into a little shop, getting some milk and chicken for the tiny kitten*
*She pays for it*
*she pulls him outside*
*She sits with the kitten, pouring the milk into the bowl and feeding it chicken*

*Em backs up some more and can now feel her hands in the water of the lake. She's cornered. She screams as Lorcan jumps and lands on top of her, her head going beneath the water for a second. Lorcan begins shifting back as his hands grasp Em's throat. He squeezes and pushes her head under the water. He is crying as Em starts to thrash under his weight*
Lorcan: *sobs* You were never there for me! I was nothing to you! You didn't care! YOU DIDN'T CARE!!
*Em's thrashes begin to slow down to nothing but ripples in the water. Then the water becomes eerily still and Lorcan looks down. There was no bubbles, no fight, just a limp body now on the edge of the lake. He gasps and jumps back. He starts to grasp his head tightly as he stares*
Lorcan: Oh my god... what have I done...
*Lorcan gets up and runs, despite his injuries. He just runs.*

Im not sure I belive you and I'm not standing down when I say you are going to die and then I'd be the only one able to bring you back and its so wrong and just not possible you'd just kill yourself unless you could steal a name and not kill the person which you supposedly can't do.
