Er.

First, let's get some bad news out of the way... errr... you're going to have to wait just a FEW more days for the Tanith cover...

(notmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfaultnotmyfault)

Ahem.

This probably won't make you feel ANY better about the delay, but it's looking amazing right now. We still have to get the colour just right (because this was an unplanned addition to the series, it's kind of thrown our title-colour scheme up into the air...) but it's looking beautiful. Tanith looks like a total BAMF.

Middle of next week. DEFINITELY.

Hopefully.

The good news is, I've finished writing it. I finished yesterday and sent it off. Right now, before the editing process begins, it is 54,000 words long. That's fifty-four THOUSAND.

It was MEANT to be roughly twice the size of The End Of The World, which came in at something like 17,000 words. So when I started I was looking at a quick 36,000 word novella that I'd bang out between the end of the KOTW tour and the beginning of writing Book 8, giving me loads of time to relax and take it easy.

And it was going fine, it really was. I had Tanith and Sanguine, and they'd recruited their team of villains, and the story was rattling along and everything was cool... and then I introduced a team of good guys as well. So we have Dexter Vex and Frightening Jones and a few new characters, including the Monster Hunters (two guys I've been trying to find a place for in the regular books) and Saracen Rue. Saracen is the only surviving member of the Dead Men that we haven't met yet, and it was just so much fun writing them all that the word count kind of... ran off, dragging me behind it.

It was MEANT to be a little sliver of a book. Now it's practically two-thirds the length of Book One.

The things I do for you people, I swear...

The "Can Your School Get More Awesome?" competition is still going strong over at the Skulduggery website. The ingenuity on display is something to behold, with many of you using both social AND mainstream media (local papers, radio stations) to garner as many votes as possible. Have to say, I'm impressed at the imagination being displayed- there are some real smart cookies out there. There a few schools that are practically guaranteed to be in the top ten, there are plenty more who have established themselves as challengers, and then there are the schools with only a few votes. And to the people who put forward THOSE schools, I have to ask- how does it feel to be so utterly cool? How does it feel to be the only one in your area with enough good taste to vote? You are shining lights, you truly are.

I'm just looking at some of the photos... I love that the Bishopston school in Swansea and Heathcote School and a few others have sent us photos of the school crest- I have no idea how Tom would have drawn Skulduggery in THOSE photos but it would have been fun to see him try...

And St Annes in Shankill, who supplied an arial view... Dammit, if this had been voted for, Tom could have drawn Valkyrie plummeting from the sky and Skulduggery swooping in to save her. Argh! The potential for coolness would have been astronomical!

Let's see, what else... Skulduggery and Val would have looked awesome in the corridor of Holy Family Senior School in Ennis...  and they have skeletons in St Matthews!... imagine Val abseiling down the side of Carterton Community College... or Skulduggery walking up the stairs of Selly Park Technology College for Girls... the dogs in Gabbinbar State School in Toowoomba (you don't have to look up Toowoomba to know it's in Australia, do you?) would have been able to chew on poor Skulduggery's leg... awww and I've just seen the picture from Invicta Grammar School with all the girls in army fatigues- I'd have loved to have visited there... I'm pretty sure that's a picture of Camilla visiting Brookside Primary School- so Val would have looked pretty cheeky pulling a face behind her back... and she would have fit right in with the girls from Oakmeeds Community College... Skulduggery would have been so proud to stand in amongst everyone in Scarborough College... then we have Skulduggery himself in Brentwood Ursuline Convent HS... and I'd have loved to have visited Hitchin Girls School, if only so I could have made a load of jokes about hitchin' girls...

Voting is still going on, so you've all got plenty of time left. Once we have the top ten, it'll be up to me to pick the photo that would lead to the best Skulduggery pic and then we'll have our winner. But the effort all of you have gone to is just hilariously impressive...

  5. Hello Derek Landy!

I am a huge fan of SP, and of you, because you're AWESOME.

Would you read a fanfic I'm writing with llamalovesdragons? It's called Revenge, and it's under her name. I mean, you don't have to read it, but it would be nice...

And also I can't wait for the Tanith novella! YAY FOR SARACEN RUE!

  17. Ahem. I'm pretty sure that anything above 50,000 words is generally considered a novel, not a novella any more...

...that does NOT mean I'm complaining. Not in the least! (Also, more Dexter Vex? Now THAT is also never a bad thing!)

Definitely the sort of news that makes waiting a few more days for the cover more than worthwhile, though.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Also, good luck to everyone who's schools are in the competition!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I am very disappointed. I've been waiting ALL WEEEK for the cover! And I can't enter my school into that contest majigerythingy because I am AMERICAN! I'm going to go and sob in the corner.

  22. Hello... I just had an idea... I'm not sure where it came from but it is a free idea for any fanfic writers or even Derek.... What would happen if somebody tricked skulduggery into thinking that Valkyrie was dead?... I shall leave now... >_<

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hey Mr. Landy!!!!

Sadly, the delayed novella will not affect me. All books published in other places on Earth only reach South Africa a few weeks later.

But you should still visit us!!!! South Africa loves you! Even if they don't entirely know it yet... ;)

Anyway, I just know you will win!

    ~Your first and greatest Afri-Minion,

    Lord Vlaedr.

    ReplyDelete
  24. While I doubt that would happen, the concept itself is fascinating. What if Skullduggery's partner, being through thick and thin with him, up and died on him? Or seemed to. Who would he lash out at? What would happen?

I cannot say, that is for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hi!

    DEREK, DEREK, DEREK! Questions:

First, did Skulduggery have a taken name BEFORE he became a skeleton? Because although I know that Skulduggery is a word the suits him perfectly, some people(like Fletcher in TFO) seem to take it as a reference to his skeleton-ness.

Second, if someone were to be an Elemental after the Surge, could they get the kind of symbols on their body that China has, and actually USE them?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Also, YAY! for longer novella, BOO! for having to wait longer for the cover.

    ReplyDelete
  27. All things wait for those who come.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Also, if the Necromancers were to tell Lord Vile what the Passage actually was, would he have done it?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hey Sir!

*thinks* I could've sworn it was 'all things come for those who wait'

    ReplyDelete
  30. So I haven't gone COMPLETELY loopy.

No, wait. I have. I definitely have.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anyways, about the passage thing, I doubt it.

Vile only wanted death and destruction, why would he try to stop death, even if he got to kill so many before doing so?

    ReplyDelete
  32. True...true.

Although, he would've shared Skulduggery's mindset, so he might have thought something along the lines of "Well, I'll kill these 3 billion people, but the possibilities of it working are infinitesimal, so I'll kill everyone else afterward."

    ReplyDelete
  33. Why stop at 3 billion? After all, it's much more plausible that he'd go for the overkill.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Again, true.

But wouldn't it be more satisfying in the long run to do a few at a time?

If 3 billion can be counted as a few, that is.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Sigh. My school is nowhere close to winning and I very much doubt that I'll be able to get the message out anywhere. :c

    ReplyDelete
  36. And of course, depending on the time period when he was Vile, how much of the human population would there be left if he killed 3 billion people?

    ReplyDelete
  37. It was only a couple hundred years ago. Not that much of a difference.

Hi Georgina! Well, at least you were able to enter...!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I am SO looking forward to that Tanith Novella!

I don't mind the delayed cover as long as the book itself is not delayed ;-)

And I am happy to hear that Dexter Vex is going to feature in it - I just love his name, it sounds like awesome wrapped in ruggedly handsome!

Also: 54,000 words?! YOU WON NaNoWriMo! *laughs* - if you wrote it all in November, that is. Seriously, you should go check out NaNoWriMo and then offer to write a PepTalk - there are some guys out there who would love you forever for that, Derek!

  40. Ohhh, Why Do We Have To Wait! The Reveal of The Tanith Cover Would Of Made My Birthday Perfect! Ohhhhh Well, I Need To Work On My Patience Anyway.....

    ReplyDelete
  41. Vile-as-Death-Bringer really couldn't have had three billion people to kill... I mean, even in 1800, there were, what, less than a billion people in the world? Something like 600-700 million around 1700?

Unless Skul became Vile in the 1970s, which I rather doubt, it would have been physically impossible for him to kill three billion people. I'd assumed about half of however many people there were at a time would have done the trick.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Kribu, yeah that's pretty much what I thought, but has the population really grown THAT much?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Still, if you think about it, the necromancers might have kept the passage so secret for so long not just because of the whole murder thing, but because there wasn't enough people's souls that would block the stream of life.

    ReplyDelete
  44. As to the population of the world, it has grown immensely. Mostly because of the post-industrial revolution era. The industrial revolution shortly before it provided the means to live a longer life, a middle class that wasn't poor, and since it WASN'T the industrial revolution it had less of the tragic loss of life.

I am only talking about the first industrial revolution, of course.

    ReplyDelete
  45. *head explodes* I love how we talk about it like it actually happened.

I think they kept it secret because, as Wreath said to Valkyrie, "That's exactly the kind of reaction we were trying to avoid."

So I don't think they would tell ANYONE except the Death Bringer even when they knew the Death Bringer was going to do it, until afterwards.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Kestrel - yes, it has. I just checked on Wikipedia just to see if my memories were in the right ballpark, and yes.

The population growth basically exploded in the 20th century - still only 2 billion people in the world in 1920, ~4 billion in the 1970s, ~6 billion in 2000, close to ~7 billion now.

(Also, does this mean that with every passing decade, the requirements of a potential Death Bringer are growing exponentially, too? I mean, someone who might have managed to kill 500 million people in 1800 but whose strength wouldn't have allowed for more would have been useless as a candidate in 2010...)

    ReplyDelete
  47. DEREK! DEREK! HAVE YOU SENT MY DEATH BRINGER BACK???

    PLEASE TELL ME

    ReplyDelete
  48. LOl Val... NO WONDER THE OTHER POST NO ONE WAS ON. THERE WAS ONE HERE xD

    Oh Jesus...

*jumps around singing the Brave Sir Robin song*

    ReplyDelete
  49. Of course, all this is assuming that the stream of life's requirements to block it depend on the souls on earth at the current time. If 3 billion was the number that was always required, though, then even trying to become the Death Bringer and complete the Passage before the 1970's.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Well, maybe the Death Bringer back then was supposed to wipe out everyone except the Necromancers or something.

    ReplyDelete
  51. If they always needed three billion, though, then why even bother to look for a Death Bringer before then?

Especially with, say, Vile - if he was thought to be the potential Death Bringer, and if we assume the Skul->temple->Vile thing happened at around, say, 1700 (I got the feeling that it didn't happen too long after his death and return, and if he died, say, in the 1660s, then ~1700 for Vile would make sense, yes?), then at the time no one could really predict just when the world would have over three billion people, so they'd have had to keep him around for a few centuries before he could actually do anything useful...

    ReplyDelete
  52. Derek, you need to update your Blogger Profile! It's been two years since Mortal Coil came out! Come on, add Death Bringer, The End of the World, Kingdom of the Wicked, and the Tanith thing when it comes out!

    ReplyDelete
  53. If it does require three billion, though, I think maybe the Necromancers didn't know back then. I bet they just wanted to try to kill off half the world to see if it'd work.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Well, we can't really know, can we?

    ReplyDelete
  55. First time commenting while using my phone... i think it has worked but extremely annoying as it is extremely slow -_- the Melody is not impressed!!

  122. Proof copies are easy to find...

I am...*counts* Seven books off a complete collection.

And then two(?) books off completing the US collection.

I have forty-seven SP books, plus the books I have for presents for other Skuttlebugs.

  123. Trinity College. Ah. That's what we call the Tourist College. Basically because that is one of the only places tourists go. It's quite funny, in a way. And I have actually never been in Temple Bar. :P

That's really cool! :D That's why I don't want to move to Australia... T.T But if the recession keeps getting worse, I might have to. AND I DON'T WANT TO. *sobs*

Heh. I just remembered I'm in huge trouble. I know I am going to be.

  128. IF ANYONE FINDS A MC COLLECTORS EDITION HARDBACK OR A LARGE PAPERBACK OF MORTAL COIL ONLINE PLEASE LET ME KNOW. OR IF YOU HAVE ONE, OR EVEN TWO, AND ARE WILLING TO TRADE LET ME KNOW ALSO. I HAVE LOTS OF BOOKS AND MANY OF THEM ARE FIRST EDITIONS.

MC is officially my least favourite SP book BECAUSE I CAN'T FRICKING FIND A CE OR A LPB!

    ReplyDelete
  129. MC CE's are easy to find compared to DD.

    ReplyDelete
  130. .-.

I said I wanted them in French ages ago. Half of you didn't even know you could get them in French.

I'm going to get them in French and Spanish soon. I've asked my mum and she thinks it's a good idea. And my teachers agree. So I'll have to get them before January if I get them at all...

    ReplyDelete
  131. yep, you cant beat muddy puddles :)
I would use slang but it wouldnt make any sense if I type it...
but I might for the banter... y'know?

    ReplyDelete
  132. DD CE's are SO easy to find! I FOUND ONE WITHOUT LOOKING WHEN I FIRST STARTED COLLECTING!

If you can find me a MC CE let me know, ok? I'll look for a DD CE for you, too. I'm good at looking. Mainly because I know where to look...

OH MY FRICKING GOD I AM AN IDIOT! idea

    ReplyDelete
  133. I knew you could get them in French.

I seen that you could about a year and a half ago. But I wasn't even sure if I was keeping on french at that stage. I was thinking of getting the 1st in German instead.
