80,000 words and some HORROR

I have now crossed the 80,000 word mark in Desolation. You know what that means?

It's a proper book now.

Demon Road was a little over 121,000. I had wanted it to be 80,000, which is roughly the size of Dark Days. Obviously, that didn't happen. But I am DETERMINED that Desolation be of a  more manageable size. It'll probably end up somewhere around the 100,000 mark.

Writing a book can be a struggle. It's just so happened that in the writing of this one, every time I started to flow, and write LOTS, I had to go off on tour or do festivals or get interrupted for a multitude of reasons. It's very hard to build up any kind of rhythm when your writing schedule is kinda messed up.

But I'm flowing now. I want to get this latest draft off to my editor on Monday, because on Tuesday I'm off on holiday to Disneyworld and Universal Studios.

For Halloween.

Ooooooh this is gonna be my kind of holiday. By day, we go to Magic Kingdom, and go on rides and visit Harry Potter world and just have good, nice lovely fun...

But at night...

Universal Studios over Halloween has the most terrifying horror experiences on offer, and I will be going and subjecting my girlfriend to the ordeal. I'm going to tweet about it. I'm going to take videos. You may see me scream.

But it shall be a manly scream. A WAR CRY.

And then I'll run away and leave Laura to face this guy on her own.

Gonna be FUN.

(Hello soul!)

(Heyo Inky, how's you?)

Inky Flame said...

(I is bored but good

you?)

John said...

(Bored and tired, sitting here in class wishing I was still asleep.)

Inky Flame said...

(I have a break today cause English is cancelled all week

so I am home, writing an essay
later I have to go to college for biology -_-)

John said...

(Ew, essays. Writing because you have to is never fun...)

Inky Flame said...

( I know -_-

oh well.... at least when it's done, it's done

ugh.... and on the subject of essays, I have to do a timed essay on theories of crime tomorrow -_-)

John said...

(Theories of crime? How does one theorize about crime? I mean if you're the one planning said crime you can theorize what will happen when you attempt it, but I don't think that's what's going on here.)

Inky Flame said...

(like, what causes people to commit crime

like genetics as well as environmental factors)

Inky Flame said...

(no... actually I have to look at treatments and punishments of crime)

John said...

(Ah I see, less on the actual crime and more on the people committing it.

There was a time back when I was younger that a friend tried to steal a pack of cards from a supermarket, and I sat there in the security room listening to him get chewed out thinking
"Why the hell would you do that? It costs all of three dollars. If you wanted it that badly I would have bought it for you."
And I just overall didn't understand why he would bother with the effort of stealing.)

John said...

(Oh, I read an interesting short story on that subject not too long ago. It's called The Bet and it starts out with a high-class dinner party in which a debate starts up on the subject of capital punishment vs life imprisonment. It spirals into a full on bet between two men where one will stay locked up for fifteen years to prove a life in prison is still a life and therefore better than capital punishment.)

Inky Flame said...

(coolz ^.^ hmmm I disagree with the death penalty on so many levels

I believe restorative justice is the way for some crimes)

John said...

(It's by Anton Chekhov, if I recall properly.)

John said...

(Being brutally honest, in my opinion there are some people who just deserve to die.)

Inky Flame said...

(okay ^>^

hmmm that may be true, however isn't death an easy way out? shouldn't serial killers and other such criminals be locked up for life, so they have to face with the consequences of their actions?

just my opinion

*frowns* but it is so expensive just to keep one prisoner in jail for one year

its like... almost £50,000 per prisoner per year)

Inky Flame said...

(and with that, I must go back to college -_-

hwyl fawr John!)

John said...

(For most, yes, but there are some actually insane people who don't feel remorse, trying to rehabilitate them or make them live with their actions has no effect.)

John said...

(Alright, bye Chloe.)

(A lot better now, I just barely dodged a bullet on having to present this week. The professor uses a random name generator code to decide if nobody volunteers, three per week, and usually does a fourth just to see who it would have been.
*Raises his hand*
That fourth one was me.)

In reference to Inky.

Prisons in America are privately run, the staye funds but does not run them. One state prison, Zaf knows from a family member there, is so filthy mice and roaches are like pets to the prisoners. It costs so much money in a county prison for snacks and your toiletries, oh and if you're transferred prison to prison you can't take your toiletries with you, just pictures and letters and personal stuff. The amount of money to call a person was insane, in state its less than $1 for 15 minutes, county was almost $2.

Now tell me, just because these people messed up in life, does it mean they should be housed with roaches and mice?

Anonymous said...

(whats the alternative... let them go or kill them :/ they don't learn may do again with one the other they dont get the chance to ... )

Alastair Cruciatus said...

One alternative would be to enforce better conditions upon prisons. Aretha believes in advocating for that, after what she read about the state of most prisons in her country, so I am mentioning it on her behalf.

Grant Ward ((Skylar Isome)) said...

Alastair- Zaf won't comment much, but if Aretha ever wanted to, Zaf has inside knowledge of prisons due to family being there, she could give Aretha more insight. She told me to say that, the poor girl is studying for a final so....

You have to remember, its hell to be in there, but in this time, mice and roaches shouldn't be the pets of prisoners. They should have a clean sanitary place, it's the humane thing to do...

(why should we give a shit? ... it's their own fault they're in there....)

Feraaaa32 said...

yeah exactly, they were the ones stupid enough to get caught :P

Anonymous said...

( :D:P

Frankly I think that if they want to save money then they should get rid of electronics they have no need for. Tv for example... there are books for that books don't use electricity ect ect )

Inky Flame said...

(Well we should give a shit

Some criminals behaviour is the result of a gene deficiency
For example a deficient MAOA gene combined with a bad upbringing can lead to violent crimes being committed

Should we kill someone who's actions is a result of their biology ? They cannot help it)

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(Well, they'd have to rob a bank to pay for those phone calls.

If it costs $14/minute, and they spend ten minutes per call (talking to friends, family, trying to sort out their life for when they get out of prison) and talk for three days a week, that caps out at $21,000+ a year.

The amount that phone companies can legally charge has been reduced, but prisoners are still getting screwed over by companies, and people like you two.)

Good behaviour in prison is rewarded by tokens which can be exchanged for privileges

This is based on the principle of operant conditioning
This is where behaviour is repeated if rewarded)

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

(Also what about the wrongly sentenced? Those who are innocent but found guilty, or framed with their only alibi being that at the time of their crime they were curled up alone with their favourite book, thus having no one to confirm their alibi. You can just put all PRISONERS into the same label, because you don't know the details. The ifs and whys.)

Anonymous said...

( ok but someone who has raped 100 kids molested and killed them ect you want this person to be rewarded with tv when they you know manage not to molest in prison where there are no kids... all i'm saying is if you don't kill the bad ones then at least let them suffer.... i'm not talking some boring old fraud person being killed.)

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(@Jai You could also add jail to these calculations (though I think jail has better conditions) because last I heard, 40% of people in jail haven't actually been charged with a crime. They just can't/won't pay for bail.)

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(@Keiron If you think that letting people suffer is that great, maybe we should imprison the people who get raped?

I mean, we have to make SOME people suffer, according to you.)

Anonymous said...

( improson the people who do the raping then let them suffer. )

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(Why them? Are they no longer human? Is there some inherent need to make certain people suffer?)

Anonymous said...

( you know because they are making the blooming world worse... and honestly I don't care if it's genetics.. you can choose not to do something, if you continue to do it you should not be allowed into society as well you're hurting people...

I think there should be an equal to punishment. killed 100 people, get killed, raped 100 kids get raped by 100 men ... yeh they SHOULD blooming suffer

there is an inherent need to show people that doing it is wrong so they should stop... like promoting loyal blood lines in dogs... a whole bunch that hurt the owners were killed so that other dogs wouldn't do the same.)

Anonymous said...

Chione Asahina said...

(Kas Keiron is completly right. And guys, i agree that for minimum security prisons that the call rates are fucking stupid. I don't care about people in Max.

People that have raped, killed and whatever else, multiple people. You don't want people like that getting back out.

People with mental issues should be in minimum security prison but in a special ward where they can get cared for and more security in there in case someone goes psycho.

Honestly, i would want that man that killed those kids in America dead. I know he has mental issues and it's not really his fault. Try telling that to their mothers and fathers though. I want him dead. I would kill him myself if it was my own child. But prison should be a substitute. They are criminals. Killers, people that ruin our world. You don't want people like that out in the streets. I'd have all the ones in max killed tbh. Think how much money we're wasting on giving them 3 meals a day for the rest of their lives because they massacred some 5 year olds at school. Why waste it on them?

Then i'd spend the money we're saving from the savages on making life for the less serious criminals worth it.

You know what, why would we improve it? Have you guys seen Orange is the new black? Like at all?
Ok yes their conditions are shit. But that'sto stop them from coming back. It's like saying, if you do something bad, you stay here for like 5 years.
Then they won't do it again.
If they get 3 meals a day, tv, cheap calls, visits and whatever else it might be better than their life outside so they'll commit more crimes to stay in. In the TV show, Tastee gets to leave but there is nothing for her outside, no family, she can't get a job because of her conviction so she does commit another crime and gets thrown back in the same prison. Why should we make their lives better? we're trying to scare them into not doing it again. If it's all rainbows and unicorns they're going to want to spend the rest of their life there...they're going to keep committing crimes.

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(Orange is the new Black has a minimum security prison. Heck, they ALL escape in the end. Hardly an accurate representation.

A more accurate one is during a hurricane, where the prisons get flooded, they can't sleep on their beds as they're flooded, and they go days without food or water, and then they get shot if they try to escape their cells and seek food.

"You don't want people like that getting back out" Well, they're going to get out. And they'll know that nobody gives a shit about them, nobody cares, and, apparently, that human rights should be ignored and making people suffer is okay. None of this helps the prisoners rehabilitate.)
