Forgotten Trail competition

Back in 2013, I ran a little competition.

The competition had nothing to do with me or Skulduggery — it was all to do with an educational video game designed to teach you maths and have, you know, actual fun while you do it. Incorporating historically accurate aspects of Native American tribal life and culture, the game was called Spirit Lake, and the competition was to find someone to become a character in it, using your name and likeness. Here's what I said about it at the time:

"And if this works like they hope it will, this could be the beginning of something huge. This could revolutionise teaching, and learning— not just in America but across the world— and it could be just the thing that's needed to help struggling students make that singular, all-important leap. This could change people's lives."

The competition was a great success. I got in some hilarious responses, and also some heartfelt ones, and while it was not easy to pick a winner, a winner I did pick.

And now I'm going to do it all over again.

These same awesome people — people who include the mother and sister of my personal (Twitter) friend, UFC champion Ronda Rousey* — have another game in development, called Forgotten Trail.

SO — if you like the idea of having a video game version of yourself teaching kids maths across America, give me your reasons why. In no more than thirty words, explain why you should win, and send your entries to skulteams@hotmail.com. You can enter as many times as you like, you can be any age, from any country, and the winner will be announced at the end of July.

Good luck!

* Yes, Ronda does count as a friend**.

** By friend I don't, of course, mean someone I've ever actually met, but that's not what's important here***.

*** What's important is that we're PALS. Some might say buddies. Kindred spirits, perhaps. I might even go so far as to say I've taught her everything she knows****.

**** I haven't ACTUALLY taught her everything she knows, but she knows that I would have, if ever I knew something that she didn't already know. Such as writing*****.

***** Although seeing as how Ronda's autobiography has made it to the New York Times bestseller list — a list I have yet to ACTUALLY grace — this probably isn't the best use of my, or her, time. But even so, I am sure there are PLENTY of things I could teach her. Though probably nothing useful or, you know, not-imaginary, like unicorn-taming, or yodelling******.

***** I'll shut up now.

My mum alwyas surprises me by how good she is at Dutch, actually. When we get games that have a Dutch option, she can sit tehre and read out the instructions in Dutch and can pretty much understand every word . . .

And yeah i hardly RP anymore. I think the last RP i took part in properly was Aria getting kidnapped by Erebus and that was last year lol (December)

Chione Asahina said...

I love the Japanese culture... i love anime. It's so much better than our stupid cartoons.

And Cherry Blossoms are my favourite flower so yeah. I love them so much, they're beautiful. They're called Sakura over there.

Star Inkbright said...

@Gemma: :) Yeah. I hardly roleplay eitehr . . . time, mostly.

:) Yes. They're beautiful. :)

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

(I may or may not have an idea for a possible group roleplay, I am not entirely sure.)

Chione Asahina said...

(I liked your RP with the Reapers, Sophia. It got most people joined in but it didn't last long.

You should tell us what your idea is :)

Star Inkbright said...

@Sophia: :) Well, if you do, yay!

(My participation very much depends on revision etc.)

Chione Asahina said...

(I will participate hopefully. If it is after Monday then i will still try and get on the wifi at reception but i don't know if i will be RPing.)

Star Inkbright said...

My last exam is on the 19th . . .
*checks date*
. . . Uh, so next week.

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

(I believe that was more Dragona's idea than my own, actually.

Alright. Minerve is at war in several realms to acquire artefacts capable of doing incredible things. Her idea is to acquire the objects and use them to kill the gods and absorb their power. Her primary goal is to destroy all of the realms, which will weaken the gods, as what they have control over will not exist, therefore they will not be able to do anything. She would then use the artefacts to kill the gods and absorb their power, so when Phaestra would remake the realms as they were before, Minerve would be the primary force in every single univers. That is what she wants. If there was word she had acquired one, it would be a case of finding the others before Minerve managed to get her hands on them, as well as avoiding Minerve because no doubt she would be wanting to hunt down those who were trying to stop her. But given that she would already have acquired one artefact, if she killed someone she would be able to absorb their power, making avoiding her even more important, and stopping her even harder.)

Star Inkbright said...

*nods*

The issue is with group roleplays . . .

. . . People actually haev to have the motivation to participate.

Talking too fast. That's basically me to Japanese people. I have to talk, like, two times slower and repeat my words to make sure they understand what I mean. :P

And if I talk straight English(because /some/ people are actually really fluent), others look to that person and go "You can understand all that? O.O WOOOOOW*" XD

*actually, they'd say the Japanese equivalent which is sugoi. :P

Star Inkbright said...

Well.
That was my third favourite exam so far.
My second favourite being the first RS exam (I love that our school takes compulsory GCSE RS. You have one lesson a week where you do nothing for two years, and then you go into an exam without even having to revise and get As with no effort. It's a free GCSE. It's wonderful. <3), and my first favourite being the non-calculator maths paper (<3 that was so fun).

I went in feeling so prepared and then it was so easy. And I actually managed to finish (wrote the last word as we were told to stop), which was really great because the past few science exams I haven't been able to.
Cat felt the same, so assuming we represent the year group as a whole, the grade boundaries'll probably be high (as opposed to the first physics exam, which, according to my judgements of things, was the hardest exam we've had and everyone failed), but like . . . still. :P

Also, whilst I was in the middle of the exam, I had an epiphany, and I was just sat there like "OOOH," and then I was like, "Wait, WHY are you thinking about this during the middle of your physics exam and HOW??" because I have a really one-track brain. XD

And y'know, my epiphany -
I was sat there thinking about The Fault In Our Stars, or more specifically Catherine's views on The Fault In Our Stars (this is what I mean, you see, WHY THE FUCK WAS I THINKING ABOUT THIS DURING MY EXAM AND HOW), and you know Catherine really like gender stereotypes? Yeah. Well, you know that moment in The Fault In Our Stars when Augustus was trying to buy that pack of cigarettes? If you know the book, you'll know what I'm talking about, but if you haven't read it, he was portrayed as being very weak in that moment, and Cat just couldn't read it. Or watch it. It just - it made her cringe so much adn she couldn't deal with it because she couldn't stand men being portrayed as that weak due to her internalised gender stereotypes.
And it struck me that that is EXACTLY how I feel except from the opposite direction - I HATE gender stereotypes. Like when Conductor mentioned damsels in distress up tehre, it made me very angry, and when Fera was talking about "Oh when you have a fiancé and kids" it made me want to punch something and it does right now tbh.
And the other day, when Catherine proved me right about men being stronger than women in relationships (if you haven't heard about that, I can explain it to you if you want, but basically, the long and short of it is, I couldn't stand to admit that gender stereotypes might actually exist because I just hate them), I realised that my hatred of gender stereotypes was actually interfering with my worldview a bit. And I mean, if I think people are harmfully stereotyping, I'll probably call them out on it, but like, hafl the time, the problem isn't with them. It was with me. And the same's true with Cat, but from the other direction.
And me and her were talking about this after the exam because I brought it up, and we'd both realised that we had issues here and we both realised the issue wasn't with the world, it was with us, and we were both trying to get rid of our issues and stand stuff that irritated us because we didn't want it interfering with our worldview. And we discussed how we'd both not had this issue when we were littler (I had internalised gender stereotypes when I was little; she wrote stories where males cried that really made her wince when she looked back on them and so she had to change them when she got older to make it so she could accept them :P), and that it had somehow developed as we'd got older, which was really interesting.

SO yeah. Me and Catherine are basically like identical on this aspect except we're coming at it from different ends. XD Rather interesting.

*slows down and drives properly*

Manuel: *nods* Okay.

(((*wrote replies @Star's comment on prev. page, and @the general art exam things, but it was long and badly coordinated, and then I just ended up using the art thing as a vent, because I got my GCSE coursework back this week and abhorrence and I really don't want to rant*

*not ignoring people, just trying not to longcomment & grump :P*

*still not sure if I'm here or not, tbh*

*sorry*)))

((( On another note, we successfully got distracted in physics and spent half an hour spontaneously talking quantum mechanics and how if you place an object next to a wall, it's entirely possible for it to suddenly and randomly appear on the other side of the wall; and so by extension, if you walk into a wall - there's a probability, physically, that you could go straight through it.
Which is so COOL and you can lean against a wall and think that you could (though veeeeeerrrry unlikely) materialize inside it or just straight up teleport to the other side of the room and, except for that materializing inside a wall would /probably/ kill you, that's kind of amazing to think about.)))

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

Ember: What has happened?

Liliana: We are engaged.

Ember: Marriage engaged? I didn't think you two would be the type.

Bethany: Sorry... I could fly if you want so you can do what you like... I don't mean to be controlling or fussy... It's just this is my second or third time in a car and I don't trust them yet because they look scary and they make me feel a little ill... And that's without going really fast and shaking about everywhere...

Claire: *she slows down to normal speed, also*

Lily: It's fine, though. Are we still going to travel?

Star Inkbright said...

@Taia: :) That does sound cool. :) :)

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

Onwa: *raises an eyebrow*
Why not?

It's fine. I'll drive responsibly.
*smiles at her briefly, eyes on the road*

Manuel: If you wish.

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

(Taia, it would also be possible for the wall to spontaneously transform into some milk or practically anything. Quantum mechanics is rather strange. Unlikely, but theoretically possible.)

Mary Contrary said...

@Star: :) :) :)

@Sophia: IT'S SO COOL :)
I mean, yeah, the odds are astronomical O_O
but
:)

Star Inkbright said...

Alright. Trying to WhatsApp, talk here, listen to music and do Further Maths.

It's already stressing me out. :/

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

Ember: You seem like the kind of people who have commitment issues. Still, congratulations.

Bethany: *she cuddles against her* Thank you... Sorry... I really am inconvenient.

Lily: What do you want?

Star Inkbright said...

I love further maths. <3

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

(Taia - Indeed. I do quite like quantum mechanics. It is one of the more interesting parts of physics, second to only theoretical physics as an umbrella term.)

Mary Contrary said...

*hugs Star*
Maybe tRy to tone it down?

And- Good :) :) :)

@Sophia: :) :)
I don't think we get to cover any quantum physics in the A-level, but I'm pretty sure there's some theoretical in there. :)

Star Inkbright said...

@Taia: Only way I can do that is if I stop talking to you. -_-

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

(Taia - Around half of physics is theoretical. No doubt you will have done some.)

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

(Sorry. Chinese food turned up and begged to be devoured. Back now.)

Onwa: Mm. Thank you.

*smiles*
Its fine Beth. I don't mind.

Manuel: *tilts head*
I.. am not sure.

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

Ember: Am I invented?

Bethany: Are you sure?

Lily: *she smiles* It's fine. I'll go alone. I'm not going anywhere dangerous I don't think, so...

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

Onwa: Of course you are. That's why we're telling you about it.
*realizes she's getting angry*
*calms herself down slightly*

Yep.

Manuel: It wouldn't be right to leave a woman unescorted..

Mary Contrary said...

(Sorry. Semi-fell asleep.

@Star: As much as I like you here, if that helps you...?
Idk.
Maybe you could alternate? ^^

@Sophia: *would have thought more than that?* But I think I meant, they tend to stick to the more experimental aspects..? idk.)

Star Inkbright said...

@Taia: :) It's okay, stuff calmed down on WhatsApp.

Star Inkbright said...

(Okay, I was registering with Channel Four, and I was going down the list and they were saying what they needed each bit of info for. Name to address me, email to contact me, date of birth so they could filter inappropriate content if needed. And then I got to gender and I was like 'wtf why do you need to know that' and they were like "This infprmation helps us maintain a wide range of content and services" and I'm just like "What kind of excuse is that? -_-")

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

(Taia - Apologies. I was talking what you actually learn about, rather than in general.)

Liliana: *she squeezes Onwa's hand*

Ember: Let me know when it is, yes?

Bethany: Thank you... Could I open the door for fresh air?

Lily: It is fine. I promise. I could write to you? Like write a letter and send it to your house?

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

Onwa: *squeezes her hand back*
Of course.

Open the window? One sec..
*glances at the console and uses the button to lower Beth's window*

Manuel: *nods* That could work.

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

Ember: I will be going. I have a Minerve to annoy. *she vanishes in a flash of fire*

Liliana: Are you alright?

Bethany: Wow, okay. *she smiles, moving her head close to the window, looking out*

Lily: I'll take you home, then I'll leave, and you can make sure the money goes to the charities?

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

Onwa: I am.

Careful. Don't stick your head too far out.

Manuel: You don't have to take me back.

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

Liliana: Were you getting angry?

Bethany: Why not?

Lily: I'm going to. That is, if you're done here?

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

Onwa: Somewhat.

You might get hurt.

Manuel: I am done, yes.

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

Liliana: Why?

Bethany: ... Okay. *she moves a little away from the window*

Lily: Then I can take you home. *she smiles*

Mary Contrary said...

Fair enough, Star. :)

And-- Yeah. :/
Possibly to know what they should recommend to you, by order of the stereotypes, and knowing the proportions of different genders in their target audience, that kind of thing?
That tends to get on my nerves a little, too. -.-

@Sophia: No need to apologise? :)

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

(It was I who did not clarify, Taia. Although it is hardly an important matter, it still led to a misunderstanding.)

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

Onwa: I am not sure..

Good girl.
*smiles at her*

Manuel: You really do not have to do that.

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

Liliana: *she grins* Were you getting protective?

Bethany: Thanks. *she smiles, cuddling against her*

Lily: I know. But I brought you here, so I'm going to take you back. Because it's fair? So would you like to go?

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

Onwa: Protective? Ember isn't a threat. She's a bug in comparison to you or I.

*smiles and kisses her cheek*

Manuel: Of course.

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

Liliana: She is just as powerful as I, Onwa.

Bethany: How long will it be to go to... Germany?

Lily: *she smiles, standing up*

Star Inkbright said...

@Taia: Ugh. Gender stereotypes.

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

(Gender stereotypes rather irritate me.)

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

Onwa: Hmm

Too long. I swear portal is so much quicker

Manuel: *takes her hand*

Star Inkbright said...

((I believe I mentioned my thoguhts on them earlier.))

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

Liliana: Hmm?

Bethany: Claire just wants to test out the scary car, right?

Lily: *she squeezes his hand, smiling, heading to the exit*

Feraaaa32 said...

hey people ^_^

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

Onwa: I don't like that.

At the moment yes.

Manuel: *walks with her*

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

(Hello, Fera.)

Liliana: Why not?

Bethany: Okay... Do different cars feel different or something?

Lily: *she exits the library with him* Okay... We need to get somewhere people won't see me flying.

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

(Hey Fera.)

Onwa: it makes protecting you harder.

To some extent yes.

Manuel: Hmm.. the park?

Feraaaa32 said...

hey, how're you? :) btw, i've got an announcement to make, but i am waiting for more people to come on the blog ^_^

Star Inkbright said...

Hey Fera. :)

Feraaaa32 said...

hey star, how're you? :)

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

Liliana: Why?

Bethany: So why does she have to test it? Is it going to explode?

Lily: Maybe the place that I landed?

Star Inkbright said...

:) Alright, thanks, Fera. Watching SHIELD. Doing further maths in the breaks.

How're you? :)

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

Onwa: They could turn against you

No.
*smiles*
She just wants to get used to it.

Manuel: That would also work.

Feraaaa32 said...

staR: I am fine thank you very much :) should i do the announcement now, i wonder ^_^

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

Liliana: Hardly. I do trust them.

Bethany: Okay... I love you, Silente.

Lily: *she smiles, walking with him down the alley that she landed in* *she touches the sigil, revealing her wings, stretching them out*

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

Onwa: Mm.

I love you too Beth.
*smiles*

Manuel: *carefully steps closer*

Star Inkbright said...

@Fera: :) Do what you want. :)

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

Liliana: It will be fine, do not worry. There is always Berengaria.

Bethany: Even though I'm a pain sometimes.

Lily: *she holds him, before flapping her wings, flying upwards*

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

Onwa: I suppose so..

My pain. My amazing pain.

Manuel: *wraps his arms round her for safety*

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

Liliana: It will be fine, my love. Would you like to return home?

Bethany: So I am inconvenient?

Lily: *she levels out, starting to fly towards his house*

Feraaaa32 said...

con: hey ^_^ :)
ok, well LISTEN UP PEOPLE: I AM GONNA GET ONE OF MY FRIENDS TO BE PART OF THE BLOG. HE ALREADY SAID YES. SO YES :D

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

Onwa: Yes please.

No! *rolls eyes* Beth, I love you. You're my wife, not an inconvenience.

Manuel: *blinks*

Star Inkbright said...

@Fera: OOH COOL. :)

Feraaaa32 said...

star: yeah in a bit, like in the next hour or 2 hours i think :)

Star Inkbright said...

@Fera: Aw. :( Could be worse, I guess. :)

My allergy meds tend to work halfway, too?
Can't walk up the road without ending up with tears going down my face in any case.
But the general 'my entire face itches' thing, is helped a lot, so... :P
