Uh
I think for your first and second offenses, you should get warning. Third strike, and you're banned. I think the banning shiuld only last for like six months, but if you do anything again in the four month period after that, then it should be another two warnings and then a permanent ban. I think this might vary slightly depending on the offense committed.
Derogatory terms?
I think it depends how they're used. I have no problem with someone discussing the effects of words and using a derogatory term as an example. I did that myself the other day.
I think penalties should only come into place when terms are applied to people or used to insult.
Personally . . . I think that every insulting should be treated equally, regardless of the words used. Criticism is fine - for example, if someone puts forth a ridiculous argument you're allowed to say it's ridiculous - but you shouldn't call THEM ridiculous. If they just say 'you're ridiculous' it wouldn't result in an official warning though, coz it's mild (although it might result in someone warning them they were veering close to a warning). If they used a derogatory term instead, if they spent a while detailing how ridiculous you were, or if they repeatedly kept saying it - then it would warrant a warning.

It depends, really, whether you're on the side of 'ridiculous PC shit'/'freedom of speech' or the side of 'everyone should have the right to be happy'.
I personally don't mind the language sensoring. But.
I am aware of certain forums where calling someone a "care bear" gets you a ten year ban :/
That's way too excessive, in my opinion.
I thnk it also depends on the forum. Some forums are frequented by more eloquent users, and some by people who are more likely to insult people.

Then again, some parts of it are less loosely regulated, and we just use Mumble for voice chat and also have a less moderated section there, so it's all good! :)
Then again, it's hard to define anything about our squadron.
It's just a random mix of people and seemingly no rules, yet we have people to enforce the rules we don't have and punish those who don't so I don't even know.

@Star well, we are meant to be an anarchy, but this is a community for a video game and our chat is supposed to reflect our goals in-game, so people might all have their own goals and someone might say "I want to do X" and people can decide whether to jump in on the activity or leave the activity at any time to do whatever, so there's not much in the way of leadership butrather people coming together to do various things.
But that doesn't project well to chat because sure, you can make chat rooms for new activities and delete chat rooms when you're done, but all active chat rooms need a moderator and that means a player/member has more power over someone else, rather than the moderator being from a third party who is less likely to be biased on certain issues.
Also the mods eat weed in cookies so that's my defense when I appeal my imminent ban.

Well, some people might just go on chat and spam it and make it unusable. So mods are needed to ban people for that. The chat infrastructure is designed around things like moderator privileges to manage the users, and we need someone to make use of those features.
