Poor Aby and Cory and everyone over at the Skulduggery Facebook page. They've been hit with a barrage of questions about the Requiem Ball and they've been so great about it, but I finally felt sorry for them and decided to clear up a few things here.
Let's see now, what kind of questions have they had to deal with...?
"Why is the Requiem Ball in London? Derek's from Ireland. The books are set in Ireland. HELLO??"
This is absolutely true. However, in Ireland we have the Theatre of Shadows. In London we have the Requiem Ball. That's just the way it is.
"The Facebook page has a competition to send them a picture of the mask we'd wear to the Ball! Do we have to make it or just design it?"
Either. If you win tickets you'll need to be wearing a mask — one you make or one you buy, it doesn't matter — but for the competition you just have to design it yourself. And the mask can be as simple or as ornate as you like — as practical or as bizarre. It can cover your whole face or part of your face. You can buy a mask and alter it. It's up to you. You don't even have to be artistic — you just need to be passionate. The deadline is August 10th and there's only one entry per person.
"How many tickets do we get if we win?"
Everyone who wins gets two tickets — but those under the age of 18 can get an extra ticket for a parent/guardian.
"I can't make it to London for the Ball! But can I enter anyway, just for the Event Pack?"
Yup. There'll be lots of you in this particular boat — not only in Ireland and the UK but also all around the world — so don't be afraid to enter.
"It's not fair that all the events are always in Ireland and the UK."
Actually, it's pretty fair when you think about it. Harper Collins UK publish me in Ireland and the UK, so naturally they can only organise events for their own territories. They've been wonderful, actually, in doing their best to include as many people as possible. I hate leaving anyone out, I'd love every competition to be open to everyone and for every country to have cool stuff happening, but that's up to the many publishers who release my books across the world — and there are close to 40 of them.
"How many individual tickets are there?"
Approximately 120.
"Would we have to make our own way there?"
Yep!
"Is there any age limit?"
No upper age limit, but anyone under 18 would need a parent or guardian to accompany them.
There will be other opportunities to win tickets — the Facebook mask competition is merely the first — and it's a pretty cool one.

I have been one of your most loyal minions for YEARS, Derek Landy, YEARS. Since BEFORE you started the blog. I've been writing advertisements for you on post-it-notes and leaving them in restaurants and shops. I have told everybody I talk to that Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy is the best series EVER, and he just HAS to read it- for YEARS. I have called bookstores to order Skulduggery pleasant, but then never go and pick it up, just so that they'll put it on the shelf for someone else to buy. I have bought multiple copies of your books, just for the gorgeous covers. I have READ your books SO many times.
Why are Ameriminions never allowed to enter anything? I'm really getting tired of it. I don't come on the blog anymore- or very rarely anyway, but in the beginning, I was one of the people who got it going. I and one other got your comments over 300 in one day, back when that was a lot, when you only needed 200, so that you could interview Laura. I grew up with these books. Val is always the age I am or am about to be.
I'm just frustrated. You know, it would be nice to have at least a touch of recognition, very BROAD recognition and just allow we Ameriminions to a part of the same things everyone ELSE is, even if it's just games and we can't go to the ball.
Why can't we be a small part of what everyone else is?

I think if he wanted to, he could make it across the pond for perhaps two or three different places, seeing he knows we will flock to wherever he is. My mom drove me about 20 hours to see my favorite band. She would take me twice that distance if it meant Derek Landy was in the country.
@Skyril: Derek's trying the very best he can. He knows it's unfair, but it's not him, it's his publishers. Is it his fault they're not sending him to America? With the events this year - the party packs and online operative things were designed with the thought of the Americans, so they wouldn't be totally left out. He tries his very, very best and he does much, much, MUCH more for his fans than most authors, and all the stuff he does, he does ON TOP OF the consuming job of writing one of the best book series in the world.

I have. It's not much of a threat really, overconfidence and straight up arrogance causes it to pull punches. It claims to be some sort of eternal embodiment of darkness and death. If that's true it doesn't show.
Impossible to hit? I doubt it. Nothing is impossible to hit. You just need to find the right way to attack it.

The same way you fight a necromancer, don't use physical attacks.
That's what we need to find out. Have an extended battle against it. Throw everything you have at the mother fucker and see if anything gets through. If not, retreat and try again.

Light? That sounds like it could be useful against a shadow. Energy based attacks - could be effective. This is what we've got to consider. Then we need to try if it works.

There's really no right answer.
Because a lot of people don't take any kind of damage, even when it's realistic.
And I take damage accordingly. Sometimes unrealistically, if that's what the other person said would happen.
So, either I turn into one of those people, or I don't because I'm not that kind of confident person and end up dying horribly.
Or I solo roleplay/don't roleplay.
Or I use a character like Aevil who's a bit more powerful... I'm not sure if I can convince Aevil herself to come to Blogland, though.
Well, we need her help. We need people who have had experiences with it - even if it just tried to scare them. We need to learn how it works. We need to ambush it and find out it's weakness. Then we can send it back to hell. See if it's as immortal as it claims.

Light stopped working nearly a year ago, as far as I can tell physical assault is useless, the creature has no soul and cannot be controlled through necromancy.

(Well, as someone who likes things to make sense, that gets annoying. And it keeps getting worse, because everyone sees other people doing it, and they feel justified in playing that way, and it's not the way I work, and maybe that makes me weaker, and maybe it means I should give up on the whole roleplay thing. I mean, I invented MageBay to be a bit less helpless (and for a bit of comic relief, as a number of the products don't do what they're meant to). So I guess I try to make sense, but most people don't have that high standards, and so it really isn't fun for me. I keep thinking "if this was an actual situation, you wouldn't be able to do that, even with magic." I guess I'm a perfectionist at times... Also, I think I like the idea of roleplaying more than the roleplaying itself...)
