Wow...

And I am finished.

Well, "finished" is maybe the wrong word. There are still two short chapters to write — detailing Scapegrace's little adventure - but basically, essentially, that's it. I'm done. I've just sent the official first draft of The Dying of the Light over to Nick, my editor, and Michelle, my agent. They've both read a rough version a few weeks ago so I know there's not going to be much in the way of changes when I start editing next week. Which is a relief. And word count, you ask? Word count?

Well, at the moment, before the edit and missing two little chapters, the word count stands at 153,193.  I can't find the exact count, but I think LSODM was about 161,000, so it'll be pretty close in size. I genuinely thought this would be a much smaller book, closer to Dark Days in terms of length. My editor, however, knew the word count would just explode once I started to do what I planned. The book is, he has told me, "hugely ambitious". So there's that.

And I'm glad it's taken me this long to write it, to be honest. I'm glad TDOTL is going to be a heavy, substantial book. It is the end, after all. It deserves to be weighty.

It has still to hit me, by the way. The fact that this IS the end. I think when the edit is finished it'll occur to me that there'll be no more Skulduggery books. Not exactly looking forward to that moment.

On a cheerier note, I've seen Tom Percival's rough sketch of the cover, and it will literally KILL YOU with feels.

Which, now that I think of it, probably isn't a cheerier note at all.

We have such cool ideas for the coming year, plenty of AMAZING events to announce, and I can't wait to let you all in on what we're planning. The next two days, in fact, I will be spending in a massive meeting about those very same events.

The Year of the Requiem is gonna ROCK.

OMG DEREK PLEASE TELL ME WE AMERIMINIONS ARE GOING TO HAVE A SHOT IN SP

*curls up in a ball* Oww okay jumping up and down was not the smart choice. Shouldn't have done that, I did Zumba today and holy hell that hurt. Zaffy had never been stretched.

  10. Derek, why do you have to make my cry more?

    I cry enough.

    I cry a lot.

I don't need these feels on top.

  11. My parents just let me get an account! (But I still don't have an email :() I am so happy! I have been reading this blog for awhile and now I can post comments! Finally somewhere where I can talk about Skulduggery Pleasant and people know what I am talking about! No one I know in Seattle has read the books and so when I go around saying random quotes everybody's just like, um what? And then they say that I am crazy (which IS true)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hello Iloveskuldugger-

There are two minions here that live in Seattle, actually. Ivy, who is in the books, and Fabi.

The West-Coast Ameriminions tend to clump into Washington State.

Everyone else is, for some reason, in the North-East US. Especially New England...

    Then there's Sir.

  13. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE DYING OF THE LIGHT!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Now thinking, you still have to write another 2 chapters, correct? So that will give you more than... oh wait, wait no my mistake, unless they're really long chapters you're not gonna get 20,000 words.... Meh, I'm just glad that It'll be a decent sized book, I was pretty disappointed when you said it'd be Dark Days size book, TDOTL deserves more than that.

And it's probably common place for you to get death threats after you killed Anton and Ghastly, but this death threat is a little different...

Nerdy Dalek you son of a Hutt, one of the amazing things happening this year (of the Requiem) BETTER be a Skulduggery Pleasant Movie OR YOU WILL NEVER SEE THE (dying) LIGHT OF DAY AGAIN!!!!

This turned out to be a far longer and aggressive comment than originally intended, sorry 'bout that...

    ReplyDelete
  15. That's so weird. I wonder why there are so many minions on the west coast.

    ReplyDelete
  16. They swarm there, like ants at dropped food...
But TBH, for a cradle of Magic, there aren't all that many Minions in Australia, one of them I know personally, Kasary Ileah (I think thats how you spell it...), and I know she comments here often...

  27. I live in Seattle!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I read LSODM 5 times!!!
It was so good! To get it on my kindle I changed my address to the Barf Towers in London. I thought I was so brilliant but then amazon sent me an email asking for something to prove that I live in the UK. It was so funny!!!!

  30. I think I am, but I could be wrong... No, hold on, I know where I am! I'm in Geography and I am so bored I'm doing this, so that means I'm not here.. if here is... there.. wait no, where is here? what is who? is anything anyone? HOW DO YOU EVEN KNOW WE EXIST!! Wait, whats that famous quote from the crazy guy no one cares about.... oh yeah, "I think, therefor I am" pretty weird quote but I think i got myself under control!

(Can't tell if I actually want that or not...)

Also, really hoping some of that news is AMERICAN TOUR PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD COME HERE

And when it hits you, it'll hit the rest of us pretty hard too. I'm still waiting for the full hit. Be prepared.

  35. Yes!!! Come to America!!!! Come to Seattle!!!!!!!! Seattle is awesome!!!! Hi Val!! I know you but you don't know me! I'm joking. I don't know you. You know that. Hi, I am new but I have been reading this blog for awhile. I heard you live in Seattle, is this true?

  42. I'm really curious about the Year of the Requiem stuff.

I hope the "amazing events" also include some things for fans outside Ireland and the UK...

    ReplyDelete
  43. OMG I CAN ALREADY FEEL THE FEELS AGH!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I hope the "Amazing events" effect us few Tasminions. I mean, it might affect the aussie minions, but not the Tasminions because we are always forgotten.

And while im talking about Tasminions, I found out the other day that one of the boys in my class is a fan of SP. It was such a surprise because everyone in Tassie that I know that likes the books either started reading them because of me or my brother. And asdfghj

I also found out that my god brother reads them and I... its so nice.

  45. As I am semi-new to this whole comment thing, may I ask if Sir Golden God ever comments here, because I did leave a message directed to him up the top and I am expecting some sort of something...

  46. Mixed emotions... (:(

I'm happy the last book is finished, but also terribly depressed about it...

  47. He usually doesn't reply anymore Jimmy. Hopefully he will bring out a movie though...

YES ITS GOING TO BE A LONG BOOK! GOOD DEREK! YOUR GOING TO CRUSH ALL OUR HAPPY FEELZ AND WE'RE GOING TO LAUGH AND SCREAM AND CRY AND ITS GOING TO BE AMAZING YOU MAGNIFICENT VILLAN!

  48. Jimmy, Derek sometimes comments here.
It use very rare of him to do so though.
We believe that most of the time he is too busy with diabolical things than to read our ramblings.

  49. I'm breaking down so much inside though. Its going to kill me so much. I swear to god its going to break me.

  50. ZOMG ITSA DUCKÉ!?!?!?

Anyway tempest of the silent kind, seeing that you know him so well, why don't you tell him, just scroll up to the top, then scroll down a bit till you find a long old message with like 3 paragraphs or something...

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh no I don't know him at all. If you want to relay a message to him you'd be better off asking Zafira. She's usually on around 10ish GMT.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Anyway, I feel that I am fully antiquated with this whole thing and I am now going to finish my English homework... The day we're forced to read Skulduggery Pleasant instead of books like To kill a Mockingbird will be the day Derek Landy admits that he isn't actually that amazing. This comment will probably be removed and then I will be hunted down by the black cleaver or something but could you please wait until I've read TDOTL, then I'll be ready to be assassinated...

    ReplyDelete
  53. I've copied your message. I'll send it to Zaf for you. If your lucky she'll send it to Derek who might reply and read it or might just laugh evily with a twinkle in his eye and say something about it being a secret.

    ReplyDelete
  54. So long then. Enjoy your homework. I'll be leaving for school soon anyway. Ugh school. Yuck.
    *mutters about school being terrible*

    ReplyDelete
  55. Whoahohhoo? Actually? I was kidding you know? And this isn't the first time my lack of proper description in my writing(I write as I speak, and my speak is usually accompanied by facial and body gestures, explaining what I mean more) has caused something unintended...

If you cause my unintended early assassination before I read TDOTL (or see the movie that I death threatened Nerdy Dalek with) I will be very disappointed in you....

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. *pumps fist again*

*realizes that it's the last book, it's final, and there's gonna be nothing left in the SP series so WHAT AM I GONNA FANGIRL ABOUT NEXT well probably I'll find another amazing book/series/movie/TV show/whatever BUT STILLLLL*

    Um.
I don't know how to react.
    Yo? Nes?
    Meh?
But it can't be "meh", it's Skulduggery...

  63. I absolutely can't wait until TDOTL comes out but August seems ssooo far away!!
Also I have mixed feelings for the movie if it's coming out cause I would really love to watch a movie of the amazing books but have you people seen the Percy Jackson movies! I love the Percy Jackson books and the movies were horrible!! I just hope that if they are making a SP movie that they do the book justice.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Hola! Yes, big book, yay!
Looking forward to seeing the final cover.
Hi all! ..Not sure if anyone is around (stupid time zones)

    ReplyDelete
  65. I'm not an Ameriminion but I sympathize, you guys deserve a tour from the Golden God.

    ReplyDelete
  66. An American tour would be really cool. :-)

That doesn't mean other amazing events wouldn't be cool. I mean, if they're not in America, I wouldn't be able to enjoy them, but someone somewhere will.

So either way, you're a cool person.

It has still to hit me, by the way. The fact that this IS the end. I think when the edit is finished it'll occur to me that there'll be no more Skulduggery books. Not exactly looking forward to that moment.

    ReplyDelete
  69. @Silente: I just don't want the blog to be filled with movie people. :/
It wouldn't be special anymore; or that's what I fear, at least.

    #ChaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  71. Blogfightings quite easy...at least I think it is. Then again thats me. Some people find catching food in their mouthes easy so I can't really say it is easy. Do you have a character whos not missing/dead?

    ReplyDelete
  72. That's a good point Star. Movie people on here could ruin it..

    ReplyDelete
  73. I think blogfighting is relatively easy . . .

    #ChaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  74. *I find blogfighting relatively easy

    Sorry, incorrect phrasing there.

    @Silente: Yeah. :/

Other than that, I think an SP movie would be really cool. :) I have faith in character to not make it rubbish. I mean, he already wrote a script, and it went around for rewriting by people, and when Derek got it back, it was rubbish, so he just said he wasn't going ahead with it and started again. :P
Derek is such a cool person. <3

    #ChaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  75. *faith in Derek

*facepalms at my word transposition there*

That's about as bad as when I wrote that I was going sleep tomorrow rather than going rockclimbing tomorrow.
    Heh.
    That was ridiculous. :P
I don't even know where I got the 'sleep' from.

    ReplyDelete
  76. So do I Star. Its just like hugging. Only longer. And not as...huggy.

    ReplyDelete
  77. @Silente: I don't find it very much like hugging at all, but like you said, different people are different. :)

    #ChaseForBookNine

  78. I HAVE KITTENS TICKLING MY FEET AND LAYING ON ME!

    ReplyDelete
  79. @Silente: YAY! :)

    Tickling is bad, though. D:

I have really awful tickling tolerance. Nowadays, no one in my family really tickles me, because they know I will involuntarily lash out and probably end up kicking a load of people. :P

    #ChaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  80. That's what I tend to do. I'm barely stopping myself from kicking a kitten. They've stopped as much. Now they're attacking my leg and/or each other.

    ReplyDelete
  81. @Silente: D:
Kicking a kitten could be dangerous.

Wow, my typing is actually awful today. O_O

    #ChaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  82. Just a bit dangerous. And mean. They're so stupid and goofy! Its so cute!

    ReplyDelete
  83. YAR!!!!

    I feel accomplished, Ameriminions unite.

Probably a nightmare that Derek has, coming to America and we all are angry. I mean he hasn't got our full wraith from the books. I really hope for the last book HC takes a small fraction of pity on us. I would be thrilled, I mean it is a right pain. Ordering off Amazon.

I also had a lot spoiled by people in the UK. I had the fact I was Grand Mage told to me when I was like: uhm...I'm American...I haven't read the book.

Yeah. Not fun. I really didn't know that I was, seriously. That is one pain.

    ReplyDelete
  84. @Lantern: Well, you see, my characters are all in favour of me just cheating, so they're just like "Hey let's do this" and I'm just like "YOU CAN'T DO THAT" but then they go and do it anyway, which is slightly annoying but also rather good because it means I get things done. :P

    And - *nods* :/ I'm sorry . . .

    @Zaf@ I hate spoilers. :/ It sounds like a big pain . . .

    #ChaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  85. Big mouth your way OUT if everything? I tend to do the opposite!

    Hey Zaf! How're you?

    ReplyDelete
  86. I just try to not talk to people who have big mouths. I mean I think if someone is a real living person, the odds of the character being the same nationality are pretty high. Blah.

I don't know; I already spend too much time here, and I should really be attempting to decrease the amount of time I spend online as much as I can in order to be more productive. It is for this reason that I don't have Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, MySpace or Tumblr. My theory is that if I don't attempt to get involved with anything, I will be able to resist temptation, whereas if I'm already sucked into it it'll be difficult to try and extract myself from the quicksand . . .

    Yes. A rogue vampire.

    ReplyDelete
  113. *nods*
Neither do I. Lots of people don't. Its not unusual.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I never said that. I said I don't like vampires. Hence me being a rogue. I don't accocite myself with them.

    ReplyDelete
  115. What the... DEREK!
I mean... god, I'm so excited right now, I can't even type!
I'm so excited for SP9 to come out even though I still haven't read SP8 and I want to see that cover and I want to know about these amazing events and meh.
I mean, I can't imagine SP just being OVER!
And I don't want to know what you were doing to my poor favourite characters... I know you are evil. And I know I will be crying all the time when I'll read book 8. So what will it be like to read book 9?? Answer: It will be horrible. And amazing. And horrible again. But still amazing.
    *sighs*
Derek, you are going to kill my feelings.

    ReplyDelete
  116. *grins showing her pointed teeth*
    I'm not opposed to it.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Lots of people don't like themselves.
    It's not unusual.

    #ChaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  118. @Jazlyn: I have a theory that characters exist across the layers, varying and fluctuating, and that we never see them exactly as they are, because all the different layers get in the way, and what is exactly as they are, anyway?

    #ChaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  119. Ah but I'm a hypocrite. And I can't deny nature. Plus you do so smell rather...flavor full.

  125. @Jazlyn: The fact that they don't hate themselves is also because of other people, though, so.

  130. Could. But probably won't.
*moves closer so they're only centimetres apart*
*runs a slender finger over her throat above the jugular*
*pulls the finger away and sucks it*

  131. *stumbles backwards slightly*
    *grins broadly*
    Ah. Good. Your a fighter.
    *runs forwards as a blur*
*tackles her to the ground pinning her arms*
    *grins down at her wildly*

    ReplyDelete
  132. *head rockets back from the hit*
    *grip on arms loosens slightly*
*looks back down at her glaring*
    That. Hurt.
    *grins*
But don't worry. I can pay you back for the pain.

  133. The teacher isn't even here, my entire class looked at the problems and went what the heck.

  134. @Zaf: We were shown a video in assembly today of this baby that was trying to stand up. And it kept on falling down, over and over and over, but despite this, it kept ON pushing itself up onto its legs and trying again. It fell down dozens of times, but it didn't let this deter it. And, eventually, it stood up.
I have decided to take inspiration from that baby. :P

  135. *grips her arms tightly again*
*centers her weight so Jazlyn can't get up easily*
    *looks down at her*
So. How you going to escape?

    ReplyDelete
  136. Well, if the teacher's not there and not even teaching you properly then that's different. XD

    ReplyDelete
  138. *calls over to Zaf*
    I'll consider it!
    *looks back to Jazlyn*
    You'll think of something? When.
    *bends closer to Jazlns neck*
    Now?
    *closer*
    Got a plan yet?
*so if she had a breath it'd be brushing her neck*
    How about now?

    ReplyDelete
  139. @Jazlyn: Pretty much. XD

  145. The Time: 11:45 a.m.
    The Place: Blogland Central Airport

    *the intercom crackles into life*

Announcer: All passengers for flights 602 and 903 please begin boarding. Flights for 602 and 903, now boarding.

*a man hurried through the crowd, a blazer in one hand, a briefcase in the other*
*he is hold, and nervous, and extremely hurried*
*this plane ticket rests in his pocket*
    *Flight 602*

*someone slams into his shoulder as they pass*

    Guy: Excuse me!
    *looks back, expecting an apology*
*but the offender is already gone*

*he continues to his flight, rather more disgruntled than before*
*the ticket in his pocket reads Flight 903*

  147. *the man is shown to his seat on the plane*
    *second-class, not first class*
*he argues with the steward, who checks his ticket again to be sure*

Steward: Er, definitely second-class, sir. You might be able to purchase an upgrade, if you like.

    Guy: *angrily*
I certainly will NOT purchase an upgrade!
*takes the ticket and sits down*
    Damn secretary . . . can’t even get one bloody ticket right . . .

Steward: Oh, uh, alright then. I’ll tell the captain.
*and he disappears into the galley, on his way to the flight deck*

*around ten minutes later, the plane lifts off*
*The steward is going from passenger to passenger, offering snacks and making a general mess of things*

Guy: *disgruntled, but decides to make the best of his situation*
*reclines his chair and prepares for a long nap*

*he is woken up twenty minutes later by a storm*
