Well, "finished" is maybe the wrong word. There are still two short chapters to write — detailing Scapegrace's little adventure - but basically, essentially, that's it. I'm done. I've just sent the official first draft of The Dying of the Light over to Nick, my editor, and Michelle, my agent. They've both read a rough version a few weeks ago so I know there's not going to be much in the way of changes when I start editing next week. Which is a relief. And word count, you ask? Word count?
Well, at the moment, before the edit and missing two little chapters, the word count stands at 153,193. I can't find the exact count, but I think LSODM was about 161,000, so it'll be pretty close in size. I genuinely thought this would be a much smaller book, closer to Dark Days in terms of length. My editor, however, knew the word count would just explode once I started to do what I planned. The book is, he has told me, "hugely ambitious". So there's that.
And I'm glad it's taken me this long to write it, to be honest. I'm glad TDOTL is going to be a heavy, substantial book. It is the end, after all. It deserves to be weighty.
It has still to hit me, by the way. The fact that this IS the end. I think when the edit is finished it'll occur to me that there'll be no more Skulduggery books. Not exactly looking forward to that moment.
On a cheerier note, I've seen Tom Percival's rough sketch of the cover, and it will literally KILL YOU with feels.
Which, now that I think of it, probably isn't a cheerier note at all.
We have such cool ideas for the coming year, plenty of AMAZING events to announce, and I can't wait to let you all in on what we're planning. The next two days, in fact, I will be spending in a massive meeting about those very same events.
The Year of the Requiem is gonna ROCK.

How are you?
Just a few notes, regarding yesterday, and please believe that I have no intention of offending anyone. You're a lovely bunch of lunatics, I promise. :)
Firstly- God-modding is what it's called anytime you take control of someone else's character, and in the world of roleplay- at least, the kind most of us are used to here- it's strictly forbidden, and often seen as rude. Let me make it clear, though, that I don't mean to call anyone rude- I just mean to explain roleplay etiquette. If I'm going to fight someone, I might say:
*sends a roundkick to the side of opponent's knee* *if it hits, opponent's knee will shatter and bend back the other way*
Or, if it's a more conditional action, I might explain it more, because my opponent has to know how I'm doing it in order to accurately calculate a response. For example:
*throws a knife, glowing feintly, at opponent's chest* *the knife will burn through anything it touches*
That lets my opponent know armor or hiding behind something won't protect them. But writing something like the following:
*roundkicks the side of opponent's leg, grinning at the crunch of bone as opponent's knee shatters and bends backwards*
Would be God-modding, because now I've taken control of someone else's character which, unless I have permission, I have no right to do. When you explain only your action, your opponent will act accordingly. If their character has no way to block it, they'll write a reaction accordingly. If they do have a way, they might use it.
On a similar note- and I'll say right off the bat that I've had some real issues working around this, myself- you can't kill other people's characters without their permission, even if you have the ability to. Sometimes, I know, it gets really inconvinient, and it means that you have to jump through hoops to stay true to your character whilst not killing someone else's. But it's necessary anyway. Generally, though, if you talk to people about your different characters' abilities and motivations, you can work out some sort of agreement. And you do have to be flexible- the nature of roleplay is such that you will often be at the mercy of your fellow writers.
Thirdly, and this is where I veer into personal opinion, so you're all welcome to disagree till the cows come home, I don't think it makes sense to kill Adra, from a moral or strategical perspective. Moral, for the same reason Zaf and I don't want Niccolò dead- when Adra is balanced, she's really a wonderful person- and also for Star's and a few other people's points that killing to spite a murderer makes you, in a way, just as bad as the murderer you're spiting. Your motivations, even, would be the same. If you kill people to cause him pain, you're no better than he is, and he'd say too that you're supporting his point about humans being cruel.
I don't think it makes sense from a strategical standpoint, either, because this is pretty much the first time Alastair's had some outside weakness other people might be able to exploit. If you kill her, you have nothing to hold over him. If you kidnapped her or something, you could use her as bait. But otherwise you'd just be killing a typically good person. And nothing else would come of it. It'd just be one more person dead.

I think you're proving there point there Blake; that IS what god-moding is. I wouldn't even define it as taking control of someone else's character, I would say it is taking control of the situation as a whole, escalating yourself to god-like status. Blake- it comes down to common sense. I've fought Niccolò and sometimes I dodge but usually I get hit. If he throws a knife at my chest I can block with my arm, getting hit. I'm still being hit but not killed. He doesn't always block. Look how Aro entered Alastair's mind, he didn't block Aro ASAP he allowed Aro to have a few minutes before blocking him. I've fought Adra, she got hit i got hit, she blocked I dodged. We didn't always dodge we got hit.

You forget that the characters that you're desperately trying to kill or damage are characters that have been built up from just pure ideas and are like someone's child.
I think now would be a good time to maybe cut back on the dark characters, extensive violent role plays and maybe work on character development, communication and co-habitation for a while.
We all have a difficult enough life emotionally and mentally away from here, why make it just as hard in here as well.

Since Erebus isn't really a part of me, my name, or my soul if my name were to be taken (by my understanding of the process) my mind would no longer be in my body, that includes the seals, and Erebus would be 100% free to do as he pleased.

Hey Chi.
Well at school we've had these staggered lunches which meant that I could only see my year 11 friends for 15 minutes or so. But now the school have kindly changed it. I won't get to see them anymore. I'll see them once a fortnight. We got no warning. I only found out because my friend told me. My life line, the only thing that keeps me going during the day, and they've taken it away. Sure I knew they were going soon anyway but I /knew/ when that was happening. They didn't even warn us. Just POOF. No more friends. And I can't do that. I hardly get through the day /with/ them to pick me up. Now I have to do it with just two friends. I don't know how I'm going to do it. But hey as long as I get good grades that doesn't matter! Who cares about how messing with stuff like this could screw with peoples emotions? Clearly not the teachers. So yeah I'm a bit upset.

Also - my school have around 2000 pupils and we all have our lunch in the same hour, so it's quite clearly possible.

Well they should know this. When they threatened us with staggered breaks our whole group organised a meeting with the head teacher just tosay why it was a bad idea.
