And I am finished.
Well, "finished" is maybe the wrong word. There are still two short chapters to write — detailing Scapegrace's little adventure - but basically, essentially, that's it. I'm done. I've just sent the official first draft of The Dying of the Light over to Nick, my editor, and Michelle, my agent. They've both read a rough version a few weeks ago so I know there's not going to be much in the way of changes when I start editing next week. Which is a relief. And word count, you ask? Word count?
Well, at the moment, before the edit and missing two little chapters, the word count stands at 153,193. I can't find the exact count, but I think LSODM was about 161,000, so it'll be pretty close in size. I genuinely thought this would be a much smaller book, closer to Dark Days in terms of length. My editor, however, knew the word count would just explode once I started to do what I planned. The book is, he has told me, "hugely ambitious". So there's that.
And I'm glad it's taken me this long to write it, to be honest. I'm glad TDOTL is going to be a heavy, substantial book. It is the end, after all. It deserves to be weighty.
It has still to hit me, by the way. The fact that this IS the end. I think when the edit is finished it'll occur to me that there'll be no more Skulduggery books. Not exactly looking forward to that moment.
On a cheerier note, I've seen Tom Percival's rough sketch of the cover, and it will literally KILL YOU with feels.
Which, now that I think of it, probably isn't a cheerier note at all.
We have such cool ideas for the coming year, plenty of AMAZING events to announce, and I can't wait to let you all in on what we're planning. The next two days, in fact, I will be spending in a massive meeting about those very same events.
The Year of the Requiem is gonna ROCK.

((Hey Corvo! :))
#ChaseForBookNine
I came back..
Wb, Silente . . .
I still haven't really done anything. :P
I NEED TO GET THIS ESSAY FINISHED FOR TOMORROW THOUGH. :/
#ChaseForBookNine
I need to finish my homework for tomorrow. I've got one question left on it.
Hey Silente!
That's what I've been like with my art haha.
Glasses + iron = bad... can't see lol
Well I say question. Its more like an essay.
Hey Corvo! What are you doing with iron?
One question isn't that bad . . .
*sees her second comment* Ah.
Well, I can't help with essays. :P
@Corvo: :/
#ChaseForBookNine
Then the geography essay which is due Tuesday...and the maths sheet which is due I don't even know then,,,I'm not good with homework at all.
Ironing my school shirts. Shouldn't be trusted really, am terrible with things like that.
@Silente; Yeah . . . :/
I have no tips other than to, um, just do it, though, which isn't really a tip, it's more of something that you just have to do, and it's not even like I'm that good at doing it. :P
#ChaseForBookNine
Its fine star.
Oh /that/ type of iron. Not glasses and irons aren't good.
Music helps me. I just zone out then.
Lol yup. Am now timing Mum iron... sounds so sad aha
Music has that effect on me, as well, but it just makes Silente write song lyrics rather than -
Silente, could you listen to instrumental songs?
You might not want to, though, which is - yeah, that's - yeah.
#ChaseForBookNine
Sorry if I'm distant, reading. :-)
I can't stand just instrumental songs :(
Okay, that's fine. :)
Out of interest, and this is a question you don't have to answer, why can't you stand them?
(AHA!
*fistpumps*
*points to question*
I may have finally worked out how to phrase a question that is a question of genuine interest but sounds hostile when I write it.
If I haven't, sorry, I'll keep trying. :P)
#ChaseForBookNine
Sometimes... if my phone's on shuffle I will.
I don't really know. They just kind of bore me. I need lyrics in a song to entertain me. With out thelyrics it just blurs away and then iI may as well not be listening to it and I get bored.
Fair enough *nods*
*nods back*
@Silente: Interesting.
*tilts head*
*starts ranting*
You see, I find it depends what you're looking for in a song.
Me being a metalhead and all, I put quite a bit of value into sound. Do you know what I really like? I like atmosphere. I am a big fan of atmosphere. I generally see music as . . . I see music as the depiction of something. And the something varies a bit. Like, you can have songs that tell stories. And you can have songs that describe particular emotions.
And I think that if you just do it with lyrics, then, you know, well done, fab job, I'll like reading them, but there's quite a few songs and I just go "This song is so rubbish. The sound doesn't fit the lyrics at all."
And I think that lyrics really compliment music, and it's hard to do emotional or story-y things without them, but they're not wholly necessary.
Like Iowa, by Slipknot. That tells a story. It's fifteen minutes long, and there's five minutes instrumental, and that a bit of singing, and then another five-minute instrumental, and than another bit of verse, and then there's another few minutes of instrumental.
And a lot of the story is constructed not in the words, but in the sound.
A lot of the sound they use is vocal sound, so maybe I don't have much of a point here, but there's just a stage in the second instrumental, and I just think his little vocal segments that don't really say anything with words are just such a good depiction of when you're kind of thinking something, and then you're telling yourself to shut up because you don't want to think it, but the thought won't stay out and you just end up in a mental battle with yourself and you just want the whole thing to STOP, to just ERASE this conflict out of your mind, and -
yeah.
I wouldn't advise you to look up the song, because it's rather twisted and rather scary, but it's so cool.
So that's one thing I love.
Atmosphere.
And mostly-instrumental songs can do that well. :)
Although vocals can do it so well as well so yeah.
I just want to rant about atmospheric songs I know now, but I'll refrain. :P
I also love some mostly-instrumental songs because they're just so BEAUTIFUL. And it's just . . . they're just . . . they're just some of the most beautiful things I've ever heard, and . . . and that's not really about reading a story, you know?
That's more about sitting there and staring at a waterfall, and watching the enormous power, and the shining glimmers of light reflecting off the water, and the - well, just - the WATER. It's so beautiful, and you could just sit there and stare at it. And it isn't about saying something, it isn't about making a point, it's just there, to sit there and enjoy.
I feel like ranting about some really beautiful partially-instrumental songs I know now . . . :(
Yeah . . . I think I said nothing there, and I think it was just pure fangirling, really, but - yeah.
#ChaseForBookNine
It all depends on perspective.
*nods*
I think that's what I could argue I was trying to say. :P
I mean, so many people . . . they come across softer songs and they just think they're boring because not much really happens in them.
But the thing is, if you actually listen to the lyrics, the world they're depicting with their voice, you can see they're really singing something profound, and . . . and you find you can really appreciate the song lyrically and vocally and maybe even atmospherically, even if it's something you wouldn't normally listen to.
Then again, it IS something you don't normally listen to, and just because you can appreciate for the beautiful piece of artwork it is doesn't mean you're going to listen to it that much. :P
#ChaseForBookNine
*doesn't know what to say*
*nods*
*nods*
*definatly understood that*
*a bit*
*not really but yeah*
*sort o understood it in a distant way*
Sorry
I rant a lot . . .
*backs into corner*
*backs out again to get a cushion*
*back into corner again*
*backs out to get a blanket*
*backs in*
*cuddles in my cosy corner*
I think I'm somewhere in the middle here.
I love it when lyrics mean something and they make you listen to them to actually know what's going on, but I also love how the instrumentals just make you listen and they can be really dynamic without the limits of words.
Well whattaya know, I found something to say :)
Would you like a drink in your cosy corner?
@Silente: You know, I read this book once, and there was this character, and he was a bit of a philosopher. And he started rambling on about how good might actually be evil, and I was just like OH MY GOSH THIS IS SO INTERESTING :O, and then the other characters were like "I totally understood that" and "I think you gave me a headache"
and I just empathised with that guy so much.
I think I actually hugged the book.
AW
I'm not alone.
ANYWAY, the point of me writing that WAS -
*frowns*
Well, I've forgotten it.
Um.
*rolls around in corner, but not very far because it's corner and there's two walls just there*
#ChaseForBookNine
@Corvo: I'm okay, thanks, thank you. :)
Do you want a cushion?
They're, um, on the sofa.
*points to sofa over yonder*
And - don't get me wrong, I do love lyrics, really I do.
*nods*
I like it best when they work together, I think.
#ChaseForBookNine
*looks at the two people in corners*
*goes to kettle*
Tea, coffee, hot chocolate?
I'm fine, Corvo. :)
#ChaseForBookNine
Okay. Silente?

I'm so happy!! For the first weekend ever, I don't have homework!!!!
Lucky you! I had three :(
@Dugg: !!!
I wish I was you!
Well, no, I don't. That would devalue you and make me an insignificant copy.
But I wish I had no homework like you!
#ChaseForBookNine
Yeah, I normally have a lot of homework!
Sorry, poofed. And stuff..
*looks guilty*
Yea. Hey Dugglyn!

Hi Silente!
Bye Silente!
Am I all alone now then?
Perhaps.
Fours, Dugglyn! :(
Nope. Still here. Writing that essay. :P
#ChaseForBookNine
No then. Aww. I was going to murder people. Or get a new assignment. I haven't been hired in a while..
*frowns*
*Shrugs*
*looks at Adra *
Ah hello. How are you? And your dearly paired? Still killing people?
Perhaps I should have been more specific...
Adra's not roleplaying here right now. She's busy at the moment.
Ah okay. Sorry. Well how are you then?
I'm alright- I got to video chat Trip yesterday- we talked for.. Like, seven hours. It was a lot of fun :)
And now I have homeworks :/
But I was only stopping in, I don't think I'll be able to be here for long, unfortunately.
That's fine. :-)
*mutters something about it all being Snow's fault :P*
#ChaseForBookNine
What's all Snow fault?
I have recently discovered that email conversations with Snow generally end in her dominating over me in one form or another. :P
#ChaseForBookNine
@Silente: My display name. XD
#ChaseForBookNine
Where's the more?
Star isn't a moron :(
Or pathetic!
And I can't tell is that's warrior or worrier xD
Its Worrier.
I /know/, but I don't know if it meant to be Warrior, because Star's a bit of both
Yeah she is a bit of both.
Hello?
Hello Rhydian.

We need to think of some thiiiiiiiiiiiiing!
Brb
Kk
*proceeds to wait*
(Sorry, poofed to have dinner XD)
Warrior?
I have no clue where you people are getting that from. :P
No clue.
It's meant to be Worrier, I think. :)
*hugs Silente and Adra :)*
#ChaseForBookNine
We got it from you. Because you are a warrior. And a worrier. And a hugger.
@Silente: I can worry!
*worries*
And a hugger!
*hugs*
But a warrior . . . ?
I don't fight people. I just forgive them and rant about how they're misunderstood and blah.
Warrior what? :P
And, I have to go now . . . :(
Fours.
#ChaseForBookNine
BACK!!!!! Sorry was watching a Megstiel video on YouTube...That is the best ship in the ENTIRE world.
Hey Starry! You're not a warrior? I think you are, mainly a bubbly bubble though...You shall always be a bubbly bubble
Bye Starry!
Bye Star!
Wb Rhydian!
Hey Sil! Wbd btw.
Kk. I'll try think of a way to entertain myself. Preferably without killing people..
Very quiet in Blogland isn't it?
Sort poofed. Yes its very quiet.
**sorry
Sorry for poofing. Not sure if I'm here or not
That's fine. I'm distracted. Trying to think of ways to entertain myself. Or a rp to start or something.
*a portal opens high in the sky*
*and suddenly I fall through the air*
AIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
*a portal opens on the ground*
*and I fall through*
*and am gone*
*watches Clara fall*
*wonders what the hell that was about*
Anni!! You've taken a name? Hiyaa Clara!
Hello
*Sits in shadow by lake*
Ah Hello Edward.
Gtg now :( bye!!!!
Hello Silente
Bye Rhydian
Bye Rhydian!
So what to do then Edward? How to entertain ourselves?
*a portal appear in the sky*
*I fall*
*again*
AIEEEEEEEE!
*a portal opens on the ground*
*I fall through*
*again*
*then I fall out of the sky portal*
*into the ground portal*
*then I fall out of the sky portal*
*into the ground portal*
*sky portal*
*ground portal*
*sky portal*
*ground portal*
AIEEEEEEEEEEEEE_
AIEEEEEEE-
AIEEE-
AIE-
Erm, I don't know
Hello Annika
*watches Clara*
*wonders if she should stop the cycle*
Still seeking a new dimention?
*Clicks fingers* What about time travel?
Time travel is always fun. Any time in mind?
*sky portal*
*ground portal*
*sky portal*
*the ground portal closes suddenly*
AIEEEEEE-
*FWAPP*
Ugh . . .
*stars and yellow birdies flutter around my head*
Ow . . .
*I slowly drag myself out of the Clara-shaped impression I've left in the dirt*
I spent 300 years in a cell for trying to destroy the world.
A gladiator fight would be fun?
*looks over at Clara*
*sees that she's alive*
*nods*
Gladiators? Hmm..maybe. Watching people fight is alright.
*Door opens* To Rome?
*dizzy*
*possibly concussed*
*slowly raises one finger, as if trying to get somebody's attention*
I say . . .
*faints*
*far, far away, a bell begins ringing*
*the Midnight Hotel forms around me*
*it has been charmed to return to me, if I am found unconscious, dead, or eating Mexican food*
*glares at the hotel*
Maybe later..unfinished business and all that.
*start to approach the hotel*
Fine by me *Bursts into hotel and taps service bell*
((Here.
Still distant.
I have to finish that essay by TOMORROW. -_-))
((YES, it's taken me a week. XD))
#ChaseForBookNine
*the last thing to re-form around me is the plush couch in front of the fireplace in the lobby*
*that forms beneath me, bouncing my unconscious body into the air before settling, leaving me sprawled on it like a drunk college student*
((Okay then star*))
*I, being unconscious, do not hear the bell*
Hello Star ((I just finished a history medicine on prehistoric medicine.Incredibly boring))
*walks through the hotel doors glaring at its wall*
*spots Clara*
*Wanders into kitchen and starts to make a meal*
((history Essay, not medicine))
*the hotel, while wary at first of Edward's intentions, allows him to open the icebox, pantry, cupboards, oven, etc*
*Throws ingredients into bowl. Eggs, flour, cement*
*walks over to Clara*
*stares down at her*
*wonders how best to wake her*
*walks out*
*come back with a bucket of cold water*
*dumps it over Claras head*
*the hotel is curious*
*the regular chef doesn't cook things half so interesting*
((*more essay ranting*
Ah, crap.
Okay, so all the points I need to make for the first part of the essay, I've already MADE, but I've accumulated them into other points, so they're kind of points within points.
So then I have no more points to make.
D:
Crap.
I had better get editing. :P
*STILL can't write essays*
You know, I think I should write more essays, to teach myself how to do it . . .
I realise it's already too late for this assessment, that's 25% and I can't resit it, but maybe afterwards I'll write a load of essays on SP and things like that and see how I do. :P))
#ChaseForBookNine
*I leap nearly a foot off the sofa*
AIEEEEEEE!
*bounce off the sofa and land with a FWAPP on the carpet*
((*watching :)*
Boring essays, I can do.
They're just boring, and that's okay. :())
#ChaseForBookNine
Morning.
*puts the empty bucket down*
*bitterly* . . . Morning.
*Places bowl in oven with dynamite for extra flavour* Well, about 20 seconds *Waits in reception*
Enjoy your sleep?
*grins down at her cruely*
*leans against the check in desk*
*pushes self to feet*
*brushes self off*
*carefully* . . . There have been days when I've enjoyed sleep more.
*yawns*
Can I get you a room? Or you, Edward?
No room. Just came to see how you were, see the hotel, maybe visit some guests.
*shrugs*
*looks at her through half-closed eyes*
. . . The hotel is doing well. He's got a fresh coat of paint, and is looking all in all better-for-wear.
Make dinner *Walks into kitchen seeing flames* All is fine
*notices the fire in the kitchen*
*raises a hand, concerned*
Erm, Edward, it might be wise to get out of there quickly before-
*the sink starts overflowing as the hotel tries to deal with the fire*
. . . that.
Good to know. I must say its just like the other one. Yeah. So.
*claps hands rubbing them together*
Any guests in?
*Backs out of kitchen* But, my lunch?
*to Silente*
We have a very strict privacy policy here, you understand. Most of my guests decline to have their names on the guest list. I know who is staying here, of course, but no one else, unless certain guest happen to be very open and expansive with their identities.
*to Edward*
What were you cooking in my kitchen?
Of course I understand that! I was just asking if any where in. Save me searching the hotel for them,
Soup. *Looks sad about missing lunch* Oh, well *Sits on chair*
I'm afraid I'm not at liberty to say.
*pleasant smile*
*I turn to Edward*
I could've ordered up something from room service . . .
That would probably have been quicker *Looks at kitchen* I will pay for damages
*shrugs*
Okay then.
*heads for the stairs*
*waves a dismissive hand*
Quite alright. Damages are of no concern to me.
Will you be renting a room? Room service is free.
*walks to check-in desk*
*fetches the black binder full of prices and hands it to Edward*
*sighs*
*yanks a pull-chain on the ceiling*
*the stairs turn flat, like a slide, and Silente slides back into the lobby*
I'm afraid not.
*Walks after Silente* Who are you looking for?
A room is not necessary *Takes binder* However, a tour would be nice please
*glares at the slide*
*turns to face Clara*
Why am I not allowed upstairs Clara?
*smiles broadly*
A tour for the Penguin King! I'd be delighted. Just sign this waiver.
*gives him waiver*
*turns to Silente*
I had to burn down my hotel due to your disregard for rules, and your love of murder. I don't see how you can expect me to run a business with guests dropping dead all the time. I simply cannot allow it. You understand.
*pleasant smile*
*Signs waiver* Silente, violence is wrong remember. *Turns to Annika* Lead on please
*glares at her*
I see no problem with you burning your hotel. Its back to its usual self and you didn't succeed in your plan to kill me. And who's to say I don't just want to..chat...with them?
*turns on the spot, proudly displaying the lobby*
Here, we have the lobby.
*enters the kitchen, which is on the left side of the lobby*
*gestures with a sweep of the arm*
The kitchen.
*now to the right side of the lobby*
*there is a long hallway, with a staircase, an elevator, and several closets*
The lift to the basement,
the broom closets,
and one of the staircases to the second floor. The other staircase is on the other side of the lobby.
And that's it for the first floor. The second floor is where the guest rooms are, though the halls are booby trapped and highly dangerous to those who are not guests.
*Looks round* May I see the second floor please?
*turns to Silente*
Does the tiger wish to chat with the monkey? Does the spider wish to chat with the fly? Does the shark-
*my right eye twitches*
-Does the shark wish to chat with the seal?
Silente, I'm afraid I really must put my foot down about this.
*to Edward*
Under ordinary circumstances, I would gladly show you the second floor. The balcony, as well. The skylight, the hot tub, the library, the linen closets were the towels sleep. But I'm afraid that, in present company . . .
*glares at Silente*
. . . that would be unwise.
Clara, after all the time we've known each other! It hurts that you don't trust me!
*grins*
I've changed darling. Burning me to a bloody crisp got the message just about through!
Oh, well. Thank you for the tour.
Must you call me darling?
*lip curled in distaste*
I shan't let you up there, for reasons twofold. One,
*holds up one finger*
the person writing this words right now will shortly be called away, to eat. And two,
*holds up two fingers*
I trust you about as much as I trust a hot dog at a baseball game.
*these
Hello all!
Yes I must call you darling. Its pleasant.
And your distrust of me hurts! Clearly I'm trust worthy to some extent, after all the hotel let me in.
*looks at the hotels wall*
*goes back to smiling pleasantly at Clara*
Do trust me. I've changed.
Hey Dugglyn!
Hello Dugglyn
Hi Silente! Hi Eddie! How Ares ze?
Fine thanks
*frowns at the sudden appearance*
Salutations, Miss or Mister. Have we met?
Hey Chi!
Im fine Dugglyn.
What has been happening in blogland?
Hello Chi
Well, I died then came back.
He was eaten by a T Rex
Cool! How did you die? Was it bloody?!
*sigh*
*a disappointed shake of the head*
Silente,
Silente,
Silente.
What am I going to do with you?
Oh, oh wait! I've just realized!
I don't care.
*yanks pullchain*
*a trapdoor opens beneath Silente*
*sending her sliding down a spirally slide*
*which ejects her out onto the front lawn*
*loudly* See if he lets you in now!
Ooo!! A T-rex!!?????
Yes, I was eaten by a t-rex
*stands*
*walks through the front doors*
*follows her in*
*claps hands to either side of my face*
Oh, goodness, whatever shall I do?
*mocking laugh*
*a white glow surrounds Silente*
*blasting her off her feet, back through the doors*
*she lands softly on the glass, surrounded by a cushy white bubble*
*which pops, setting her gently on the lawn*
*Sits back in chair and looks to the floor*
*glares*
*jumps back to her feet*
*runs in*
I'm I allowed in?
*notices the newcomer*
*pleasant smile*
Salutations.
Would you like a room?
*sits in the swivel chair behind the check in desk*
*adjusts my name plate so it catches the light*
*CLARA CROWLEY, MANAGER*
Why must you both argue?
*laughs, quite madly, as Silente is hurled off her feet and bounces gracefully off across the lawn once again, in a slightly larger white bubble*
*jumps back to her feet*
*runs in and grabs Clara's wrist before anything happens*
Yes please!
What a way to make a top comment.
*groans*
brb
*looks at Silente through half-closed eyes*
*yanks the pullchain*
*Silente falls through the trap door again, as the bubble is in mid-form*
*leaving her lodged in the tube*
*looks to the newcomer and blinks*
Pardon me, I didn't quite catch that . . ?
Yes, what a way.
*watches bored
Oh, so you won,t forgive each other?
*feels the sudden urge to sit upside down and runs up the wall**stares down at everyone below*
Hello down there!
