My Year in Review

Ah, 2013... I knew you well.

It was a good year for me, all things considered. A busy one, of course- but when is it ever any different? The Maleficent Seven and Last Stand of Dead Men were both released, delivering to me the most shocking revelation of all — that there's only one Skulduggery Pleasant left. Yes, technically I KNEW it was coming, but it still kinda took me by surprise to find myself writing the final book in the series.

So what else did I get up to in 2013? Let's recap, shall we?

January - dipped my toes into Twitter. Discovered Twitter to be basically quicksand, and so was unable to pull toes out. Still being dragged under.

February - I did an event at the Imagine festival in London, showing clips from movies that inspired Skulduggery. So much FUN.

March - Went to Germany. As usual, had an insane amount of fun and was kept incredibly busy for the entire time. The Maleficent Seven was unleashed upon an unsuspecting world.

Also met Steven Moffat and compared notes on how to traumatise people. (Speaking of which - The Time of the Doctor, eh? I'll miss Matt Smith, and it was so good seeing my beloved Amy back for a few seconds...)

April - was spent writing.

May - Started yapping to Ronda Rousey's mum. Which is, I think, an event worthy of an entire month.

June - this month consisted of me editing, touring, playing video games and watching movies. Not a bad way to spend a few weeks.

July - Read Geek Girl. Met Holly Smale. Holly Smale fell in love with me. It happens.

August - Last Stand of Dead Men released. Could life get any better?

September - My doggy died. This year I have had to put down my three dogs. I now have no dogs left. Ali's death sucked most of all.

October - My Doctor Who short story was released. Yay!

November - Writing for Book Nine.

December - Writing for Book Nine.

And how shall I be spending my New Year's Eve, you wonder? Will I be partying? Will I be singing? Carousing?

Nope. I'll be writing. And I'll be writing happily.

In closing, I'd like to thank all of you for your support, thank you for reading, thank you for being nice to each other, and for supporting each other. It's because of you that I am able to do the thing I love every single day.

I hope 2014 is kind to us all.

But especially me.

  56. My gerbils are funny I tried playing with Coco and he hid, he's kinda cray cray and hides in the shadows....not why I named him Coco though its how he looks but he acts like Coco by hiding a lot

    ReplyDelete
  57. @Adra: Aw. :( :(

    Get some?

I've just remembered that me and my family are going to a New Year's party today. Urgh.

(We'll be back before midnight, but yeah.)

We always used to go to these friends of my parents (you know, the ones we call aunt and uncle even though they aren't related) every year for New Year, and we used to stay over because obviously they lived down in Ipswich and we lived up here, and that was the first time me and my sister ever played Mario Kart, and I didn't have a DS (I never wanted one until after she got one and I discovered it was fun), and she did, and she was doing so hopelessly that she gave it to me in case I could do any better, and I couldn't. We were on Luigi's Mansion, and eventually someone started helping us. With his help, we eventually got into the mansion (which you get to right at the beginning) on the first lap as the seventh racer crossed the finish line and the game ended.
    Fun times. :P

Anyway . . . I miss that family. I sort of knew them, you know? I've seen them once a year for years on end and now we haven't seen them for years. :(

So nowadays we just stay at home.

Last year, my mum knocked the blanket onto my hand as she was standing up and at midnight, I was standing there soaked in champagne. :P
We all had a glass, and all us kids decided it was disgusting, so this year if anyone suggests it I'll ask if I can have lemonade instead. :)

    #ChaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  58. *as in, she knocked the blanket onto my hand, my hand obviously got knocked, it was holding my glass, champagne spilled out of my glass, NOT FUN.

    #ChaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  59. Hey people! So I know someone's already said this but what are/will be peoples new year resolutions? Mine will probably be to go outside into the world more, interact with humans more, that sort of stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  60. We usually get sparkling juice, because champagne is disgusting and gross.

I had raisin wine before. It was amazing.

And I used to play DS. Then we moved, and I don't know where it is. And- I never see my old friends anymore. It's been years, and it kinda hurts because after we moved... Yeah. I cried a lot :P

We used to play with our neighbors every day. EVERY. After homework, we would play until my mom rang the bell (around dinner) then we went out and played again until 9 or so. The summers were fun :)

But now we hardly talk, and it makes me sad..

Oh darn I should change this topic now.

But yeah. New Years Eve :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. Dammit. -_- I almost inserting text boxes to make the writing go all layered and crazy, or changing the font size, or something, trying to use effects on the words to portray how the thinking is, but I CAN'T BECAUSE I'M GOING TO PASTE IT HERE DAMN YOU AND IT WOULDN'T WORK.

  62. Mara!!

    New Years resolutions.

I can't tell anyone. Mara, Star. Hush.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Our thing is we watch The Twilight Zone and we play Scrabble or Monopoly, I fail both ways. We do play Wii bowling too and Mom fails to miserably

    ReplyDelete
  64. @Adra: Aw. :( *hugs*

Missing people really sucks. However, you meet new awesome people, and, you know . . . *shrugs*

I only really play my DS when I go on holiday . . . XD

@Silente: I have no clue what mine will be. :) Probably to be less lazy and to get this damn story written.

    #ChaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  65. *Hyperventilates slowly*

    No

    I can't contain the resolution

    I need this

    ReplyDelete
  66. We do the Warriors books as a roleplay on a game and my one friend who is my temporary Elder asked if the two new people are possible mating worthy and I just go: Hell no I am not the Saracen of the Clan. *pause* Well maybe just a kiss...

    I killed her laughing

    ReplyDelete
  67. @Zaf: Fun. :) :)

How long does it take you to play Monopoly? We spend hours on it, and then we're not finished and my bro and sis insist we have to continue another day. It's more trouble than it's worth, so we don't play it all that often. :P

    #CjaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  68. @Zaf: Ah, you see, I can't act, so I would just kind of hide from activities like that. :)

    #ChaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  69. @Adra: I know. XD

We often just convinve people not to continue although we said we would, though . . .

    Fun game, however. :)

    #ChaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  70. When I used to go to day care and all we had Monopoly games that lasted the week I once won by the end of a month

    ReplyDelete
  71. @Zaf: O_O An hour?

    Lucky you. :)

I generally lose at games. Once I was doing really well, though, and it was so BORING. O_O

Once in The Morganville Vampires they were playing Monopoly.
*quotes from memeory as best I can*

"Shane was kicking ass, but Michael had the railroads; Eve and Claire were just kind of sitting there watching their money stacks dwindle.
No wonder people liked this game. It was like life."

And if it's like life - I wonder if it feels boring, to be winning at it?

Although, my mum said once that rich people didn't necessarily have more money, because although they had more, they had more STUFF, so they still had to pay the same amount. Which makes sense.

    #ChaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  72. Monopoly's great, takes ages, but its great! Good luck against your dads hotels, fingers crossed he lands on chance and gets the repairs card.

    ReplyDelete
  73. My Mom ends up in jail and I usually pass her waving and we end up laughing. And dad has hotels and we become poor

    ReplyDelete
  74. My mum always says that she'd rather we lived in a less big house and had slightly less money and we still got to see each other, than if her and my dad worked all the time and we were just given to childminders and stuff . . .
We're older now, but still. :)

    @Zaf: That sounds AWESOME. :)

    #ChaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  75. I heard something say that the economy should work like Mario kart- the closer you are to first, the less the boosts you get

    ReplyDelete
  76. @Silente: One of the Morganville Vampires books. You honestly expect me to remember? I quoted from memory for a reason. :P

I've only read the first seven, and it isn't in the seventh (because I got that one this year and I remember thinking about them playing Monopoly before that), and it probably won't be in the sixth or the fifth . . . so in any of the first four books, possibly?

    Sorry. :P

  81. @Silente: Well, the first two don't have Myrnin in, so I can understand that. :)

    MYRNIN. <3

I'm not sure why I love all the insane characters. Probably because they're awesome. :)

    #ChaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  82. @star insane characters are awesome. Myrnins like a little child he's great!

    ReplyDelete
  83. *waves back*
I love those books!! I think it might be in the fifth one

    ReplyDelete
  84. @Silente: MYRNIN ISN'T ANYTHING LIKE A LITTLE CHILD. LITTLE CHILDREN ARE A LOT MORE SENSIBLE. HE'S REALLY KNOWLEDGABLE AND INTELLIGENT AND THAT'S PART OF WHAT MAKES HIM AWESOME.

    He reminds me of Hunter.

Except he's possibly awesomer; no offense, Hunter.

    #ChaseForBooknine

    ReplyDelete
  85. @Corvo: The fifth? Damn. :P I guessed it wasn't.

And - I've only read the first seven, because they aren't in the library so I have to buy them (I generally buy one every time I visit a bookshop or every time I have a birthday or Christmas), so it's taking me a while to read them. :/ However, they ARE awesome. :)

Ohmygosh, though, the covers SUCK. They really do. The covers and the blurb give you a really different impression of the book to what the book actually is.

    #ChaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  86. @Adra: MYRNIN. <3

    (But Hunter's awesome, yes.)

    And

*Smacks Hunter* Hush. RedRays hurt. And breaking arms.

    ReplyDelete
  96. @Silente I wish I could follow the link but my phone's really crappy and hates me :(
@Star It's impossible not to love those slippers, let alone Myrnin!

    ReplyDelete
  97. I have to leave, but I wanted to say hi and wish everyone a happy new year!!

Also, Star- regarding your earlier comments about how having people in your head is cool but also sometimes difficult, the main reason why I gave Niccolò a voice here is because that made him a lot more quiet in my head. I don't know whether or not letting Hunter speak more would help you at all, or have the opposite effect, or no effect at all, but anyway, that's an idea. Also, back then Niccolò was a lot more unpleasant. I wouldn't mind half as much now. But I do have to go now, so bye!

    #ChaseForBook9

    ReplyDelete
  98. Etherdemon.com? *laughs*

I'm pretty sure the website is something like ashnightsrule.com

Well, the official one anyway. :)

And - if you want to file a complaint officially, you should go through official methods and find someone. Just ask around.

((Um, this is me talking in 'real' life terms. Sort of like I'm roleplaying.))

    #ChaseForBookNine

    ReplyDelete
  99. Also, Adra, I am eagerly awaiting stories for the ships of Blogland, just so you know. I think that'll be really funny. And I can try to help you with some of it, if you ever want me to. And yeah. *is gone*

    #ChaseForBook9

    ReplyDelete
  100. @Ari: Okay. :) Thanks for telling me. :) :)

Yeah, Ari- I'm a little busy rn but soon! I'll try to write one today....

    ReplyDelete
  102. Also - I just slipped a minor Slipknot reference into my Hunter&Ez short story . . . XD

Assuming I get any of this story published, anyone who likes the music I like if just going ot be over the moon reading it, with the amount of references I give.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Hello all. I came on instead. Because I'm more likeable I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I'm not going to lie- I don't have voices. I feel my characters :)

    Really strongly too

    Ow

    It hurts sometimes

I just know them really well.

  109. Mara drew Tadra

But you know, it can develop into a voice sometimes, if I let it... :p

    ReplyDelete
  110. @Adra: *laughs*

I don't generally have voices. Just sometimes, when I've been thinking about them a lot.
My friend has voices, and has trouble distinguishing them from real live voices.
    :P
    Hey Ed, Alexis!

  111. I'm not so much a voice as the others, maybe I am. I stay quiet because that's what I like, peace. But if I wanna talk I'll talk.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Sometimes I wonder, am I really actually shipped? I guess I should wonder, Tadra is so popular I never understand if it will always stay that way. Hmm I probably shouldn't be out but hey.

    ReplyDelete
  113. My hoover just exploded in my living room

    ReplyDelete
  114. @Adra: she WHAT??????????????????????????????????????????????????????

    AHHHH SHE'S PERFECT. :)

    So is Tadra. :) :) :)

@Alexis: Like I was saying to Snow - people will ship what is shippable. You can make people ship anything you want, but you have to MAKE it happen. :) :)

Apparently, I have yet to learn this art of shippability, because, as my characters are telling people, people should NOT be shipping Ezter and if they are it is MY damn fault. XD

(I mean, it isn't my fault.

    But Hunter has a pickaxe.)

  116. Fabi, Liz, Effie and a few others are more like moods than voices in my head. At the same time, though, they're always in there, even when I'm not in that mood.

Ioux and Aevil are more like voices in my head than sides of me, and Rook and J.A. are sore of in-between.

Rook is especially hard, because I'll start to type something, and then he'll panic and say "no, don't tell them that!" and the panic feeling latches onto me as well, even though he's not me as much as a lot of my other characters. So it makes things complicated.

  118. @Lantern: That makes sense. :)
Although, I said something, and someone said it made sense, and then I said "I make sense? O_O What is this madness?", and they sadi that I didn't make sense, they were just mad enough to be able to understand me, so whether it ACTUALLY makes sense or not is beyond my knowledge, but who says what sense is and isn't anyway?

  120. Rook :P
    No

I still have yet to see it, Star.

The thing about Tadra is, well, not only the emotional connection, but the fact that anything can happen. Like- right now, Adra is doubting herself a bit, and that's tough (tough to write)

But I have Mara and Star a somewhat quote paraphrase of something they once said and DAMN
    ITS SO FLUPPING CUTE

  124. @Adra: I know what you mean. *nods*
When people are really going to be together and it's obvious and it's happening and happened and nothing's wrong . . . it isn't as shippable, because like, what's the point?
And the doubt kind of lends it desperation and you really need to hope and . . . more emotions.
So I know what you mean. :)

Hunter's saying that maybe he and Ez should just be together then to get everyone off their backs. Ez is telling him that that would defeat the point. XD
