Yay! You can actually get Mass Effect 3 pretty cheap now. Well, it's not actually that cheap - it's probably the most expensive game which is 4 years old you'll find.
If I were you, though, and I wanted to play Mass Effect from the start - I'd start playing ME2 first. If you want a good ending on ME3, ME2 is the best port of call. Also it gives more background on the characters and stuff. But you don't have to play ME2, ME3 is a good standalone product, especially since thanks to my fanfic you do know the universe etc.
Oh, and btw, on Wednesday I'll be posting a Mass Effect video on my blog if everything works out well. I have a capture card and I've got it working again so I will be the one playing it. It'll be ME1, which is REALLY old, so don't expect anything like "oh my god awesome graphics". I might do ME3's multiplayer alternatively and do a match of that.
I'll also do Assassin's Creed IV, maybe within the same video. That's also a good game. Not as good as ME3 or ME2, but better than ME1 - mainly for graphics and gameplay reasons. :P
