Laura was meant to come round yesterday to pick up her copy, but instead she's calling round tonight. While I wait for her to arrive, I've been going over the word counts to all the books so far. I'm very surprised by the first four books— for some reason, I thought everything I've written had been over 80,000 words. Apparently not.
Skulduggery Pleasant was 67,393 words.
Playing With Fire was 69,683.
The Faceless Ones was 69,689.
Dark Days was 77,335.
And now we see the numbers start to jump...
Mortal Coil was 104,000.
Deathbringer was 118,000.
Kingdom of the Wicked was 134,765.
And the second draft of Last Stand of Dead Men is coming in at a back-breaking 156,688 words. Basically, it's twice the length of Dark Days.
I don't know how long it'll be after the edit, but hopefully I'll be able to trim it down a little.

If you're online, this ded is something that's been in me for a while. It's very personal, but I wanted to share this with you guys.
Here goes.
I dedicate this page to JN.
Nobody here knew JN, I’m fairly sure. JN was a fellow classmate of mine, up until about two months ago. Coming up on the 20th is his two month death anniversary.
This dedication is going to be pretty personal and emotional, so if you don’t want to read it, that’s fine. I just need to put it out there…
On the 20th April, 2013, an amazing person died. It was such a huge shock; I remember just sitting in History and crying for the entire block. I was so shocked because you and your sister had this incredible relationship and I felt so horrible knowing that you wouldn’t be in her life anymore. I cried for a long time.
On the 22nd, we learnt that it hadn’t been an accident. I’m ashamed to say that for a while, I was angry with you. How could you leave your friends, your sister? But then I realised. You were so smart, and you loved your sister with all your heart. You would never make a decision like that without knowing that is was what you wanted.
To this day, I don’t understand it; what made you do it, what happened that the rest of us couldn’t see. From what I saw, you were enormously happy, in a loving family, with loving friends. It’s hard for me to come to terms with your death, and with everything that followed.
My friends didn’t understand, but I was closer to him than they were. I did my lifeguard training with him, I spent a week with his sister in a choir festival in Oman, he was in afterschool choir. I have so many fond memories of you JN, so many memories that I hope I won’t forget.
Afterwards, I remember just not being the same. You were the first close person to me that had died, and I was a mess. I couldn’t think the same. I don’t let any of my friends refer to the subject of suicide around me anymore. It crushed me.
This dedication is to remember you, but also to come to terms with everything that has happened in these two months. It’s time for me to not move on, but to put you in a place in my heart where I know you can stay.
I’ll never forget you, and I’m watching over your sister for you.

He reaches for my hand, but I step back and shake my head to try to forget about the tears.
"I can't do this..." I say, pain flowing out of each word I speak.
"What do you-"
"You're not really happy. It's too painful seeing you once a month... That's not enough, but it's all we've got. Whenever we don't get to see each other, you're not truly happy... And that's-that's," I begin to stutter as the tears slowly spill from my eyes. When I speak again, I start from another point, "What I want is you," I tell him. "But what I need is your happiness... And like this... You're not happy, are you?"
Through tears, I look up at him and see his eyes are focussed on me. Silence falls over us, and it feels like all air has gone from my lungs, and I feel my insides turn to ice.
Finally, he admits what I knew all along: "No." He says, sounding irritated with himself. "This distance is killing me, but that doesn't mean I don't love you."
I take a deep breathe, then step back into him, so our bodies are touching and I press my lips against his, promising myself it will be the last time.
"I love you." I whisper in his ear after our lips have parted, and that's when I walk away, ignoring him shouting my name. I feel numb, but I know this is for the best. His happiness is what's most important to me.
