Such is the reality of life as a writer— there IS no time off.
Other people leave the office and go off on holidays, but that's not the case with writers. Oh sure, we can easily walk away from the writing desk, but it's not so easy to flick the switch in our heads that makes us stop thinking of the next thing to write. We're stuck in that headspace. A writer's brain will continue to churn, even when we want to think about other things. It's not a BAD problem to have. It's not as bad as, say, being born without a head or waking up one morning to find your house is made of cheese. But it can get annoying. It means that you can never really relax...
I've had a few days off ever since sending in my first draft of LSODM. The last time I spoke with Nick, my editor, he was halfway through and loving it. Apparently. So that's good. I think. I'm not sure what my feelings are towards this new book. At the moment I'm too close to it, I don't know if it's good or great (or, yikes, bad) so I'm at that stage where uncertainty is tainting everything and I'm just waiting for Nick to finish the whole thing and say "Yeaahhhhh it's... fine... BUT..."
So yes, I've had a few days off since then. Two of which were taken up with meetings. But from Thursday on, I haven't even had to answer the phone. So what have I been doing?
Planning.
I have two short stories to write for various things. I want to do a lot more for the Skulduggery short story collection coming out next year. I need to start thinking of Skulduggery Book Nine. And I have to get a handle of what I'm going to write AFTER. What book is going to coming out in 2015? What will the next series be?
So that's what I've been doing over the weekend.
But now that I have the first draft handed in, hopefully I'll be able to get back to posting here on a weekly basis, and being a bit more present on Twitter, and generally getting things back to normal. You've all been very patient while I've had my head down, and I appreciate it. As a reward, here's a thing.

I don't love wind chimes, though. They chime in the wind. I know when it's windy, danke grazias merci thanks. Wind chimes are for deaf people who cannot feel anything. And how many people are in that position? A severe minority. Windchimes are therefore useless. And they annoy me. With their chiming. In the wind. And when they chime when there is no wind. Which is even more annoying, because it shows they can't even tell when it's windy and when it's not. Why should they warnerers of wind, then? Nearly all humans and other animals could do a much better job. Windchimes are stupid.

You mean mad as in angry, or completely insane? If I'm honest- which is something I happen to be quite often, actually- I'm a raving lunatic. Completely barking. Why should you want to chat? Chatting is boring. Killing is so much more fun.

Aretha knows. The great assassin. She kills nearly every day. You all try to hard to justify your actions- it's rather funny, actually- but in the end, killing is killing. The taking of lives. And at the end of the day, no matter how much you push it aside, there's a part of you that likes it. A part of you that craves it. You both know I'm not wrong. You've felt it. No matter how much you lie to yourselves, it's there. The difference between us is that I do not attempt to deceive myself. I am free.
Do you think yourself above it? Some sort of puppet master? You fight on the front lines during all the wars. Why should you do that? The instinct to kill, to maim, to torture is within all of us. Everyone wants that sense of power. Feeling another person completely at your mercy- watching the terror grow in their eyes- there's a part of everyone that relishes that. I've just strengthened mine. I don't deny my basic instincts. It makes me stronger. You ought to try it sometime.

Everyone is a killer. Don't put yourself on a pedestal. And could you just drop the whole 'I only killed once, it was all self-defense' thing? Like I said, killing is killing no matter how you justify it. Also, you've killed plenty. You fight on the front lines with everybody else, remember? You've killed plenty of people without ever even having learned their names. They're not important, right? Not really worth remembering. You probably don't even know you killed them- they died from the wounds you inflicted, but you never knew and never cared. You just contended yourself with what you consider the truth- you're a 'good guy', your judgment is always sound, everything you do is right because it's for the benefit of others. But what if it wasn't? It's all lies. When you killed Vengeous, you let something darker take over. You may separate your true name from your taken name, but I know better than anyone that you're all one person, and that darkness infecting your true name casts just as long a shadow over your own heart.

I'm not saying- I'm asking. Everyone is so against everything that I am- you run from death and cruelty and 'evil' like it's a plague. You think yourselves above it. But I'm asking you to look inside yourself. Justaria isn't she. She's you. Everyone has that instinct- everyone has the capability to do the things that I do. Everyone. Maybe I'm not as mad as you think. Maybe I'm just the same as any other average person. Maybe this is in everyone's nature, and I'm just not afraid to let it out. You may lie to yourself- we all need some way to sleep at night- but in the end, we're all the same. The human race. A planet full of people to terrified to look through an untainted mirror.
