Cystic fibrosis? It's quite fascinating, all because of a protein that doesn't produce salt, I believe. Perhaps you could write about treatments, which vary and can all take up a large chunk of your report.

Aha. My Science book I have found.
The symptons are thick mucus, having difficulty breathing, chest infections, and having difficulty digesting food.
Basically, the cells that line th airways of the lungs make mucus that is thicker than normal. This thicker mucus isn't cleared from the lungs as easily. This makes it harder to breathe, as the airways being covered in mucus is essentially the airways being smaller, so you can take in less oxygen through them. The mucus also traps lots of bacteria in it, because that is what mucus does, and as the mucus just stays there for ages, so does the bacteria. The bacteria can spread about and lead to chest infections.
Cystic Fibrosis is caused by a faulty gene, so it's a genetic disease. The gene for Cystic Fibrosis is recessive. Maybe you could explain in your essay what recessive and dominant genes are and say why people might not know that their child could have Cystic Fibrosis (because they don't know that both they and their partner carry the recessive gene?) Also, you could explain what a carrier is, that could get you marks. You could draw a Punnet Square and write the percentages of this person or that person having Cystic Fibrosis?
Cystic Fibrosis cannot be cured becaus even if we took all the thick mucus out, the faulty gene would just make more, and at this point in time we cannot change a person's genes.

Cystic Fibrosis usually affects the lungs and pancreas,but can affect other parts of the body.
The faulty gene is on chromosome seven.
There are mny different varities of Cystic Fibrosis but they all basically stop the body handling salt and chloride properly. This means there is a fault in which salt ajd water travel in and out of the cells. Too much sodium (salt) travels in the cells. The water follows the salt, which leaves too little water outside the cells. This means that there is less water in the mucus and THAT is why the mucus is thicker.
About 1 in 2500 babies in the UK are born with Cystic Fibrosis, which is still relevant to you coz both Scotland and England are in the UK. Yay for that.
Cystic Fibrosis is more commen in caucasian people. It muchless common in Afro-Caribbean and Asian people.
Symptons usually develope in the first year of life, but may develope later in childhood.
Also, coughing is a sympton.
Cystic Fibrosis also blocks the normal flow of digestive juices from the pancreas. This can result in food not being digested or absorbed properly. This can cause malnutrition, not gaining weight even if you eat a lot, and constipation.
