A Bad Review

Hullo there.

This post started out as a quick response to a few comments in the previous entry, but it grew into something a little more detailed. So even though I really have to get back to the Tanith novella, I figured I'd address it here instead.

Kestrel LeStarre (hi Kestrel!) posted an excerpt from a Good Reads review of Book One- a review that wasn't exactly favourable. Every writer gets all kinds of reviews- some good, some great, some bad, some terrible. It's the business. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. I'll deal with this one in stages.

Disappointing. The title/name and the cover illustration really appealed to me, but the book was generic and unbelievable from the start. I suppose some could be forgiven considering that the intended audience appears to be maybe 11 year olds (?), but I personally don't believe that children's books should be low quality just because they are aimed at children.

I can't find fault with this statement. I mean, I don't exactly AGREE with it, and most of you probably don't either, but the reviewer is merely stating that this isn't his cup of proverbial tea. He doesn't think the writing is as good as it should be. I got a few of these responses to the first book and my reaction was to shrug. Fair enough. That's what they think. I can read back over the series and make a note of where and when and how my writing improved- I am a MUCH better writer now than I was back then- but for every negative statement I received, I got hundreds of positive ones from readers who were willing to forgive any first-book-mistakes and simply dive right in, ready to be swept away on a tsunami of, er, awesomeness.

And hey, how can you disagree too harshly with a guy who appreciates Tom's covers like that?

...oh, and saying "I'm a genius" all the time does not make a character full of "dry wit".

This is very true. The fact that he is full of dry wit makes him full of dry wit. Nicely pointed out.

...oh, and being spunky child full of spunk who sprays spunk everywhere does not mean the child is equivalent to an adult. Children can be clever, creative, work in groups, et cetera but having them physically fight adults 1-on-1 strains credulity.

Ah, now here is the only point he's made that I take issue with. Having a spunky child fight an adult one-on-one does NOT strain credulity. Having a spunky child BEAT an adult one-on-one, however, very much does. It took Valkyrie YEARS to be strong enough to hold her own without the use of magic, and even then I don't think she's ever WON. In Death Bringer, when she's fighting Moore in her house without magic, even though she's had a few years of the best combat training in the world, the fact is she's still a 16 year old girl and he's a grown man. And Val doesn't exactly win that fight. She needs help.

I've always had a problem with YA books that show young teenagers beating adults in a physical brawl. They might get lucky, absolutely. A lucky punch can knock anyone out. But most of the adults they go up against are criminals or villains of some description- men and women who KNOW violence. No amount of martial arts in the world will make that a fair fight. Fair fights, in fact, are ridiculously stupid. Why would you EVER get into a fair fight? If you have to fight you need to WIN- and that means you fight on YOUR terms, not his.

Val has adopted this philosophy because this is my philosophy.

When Val has to fight, she fights. She uses every dirty trick she can. This is the girl, remember, who tore out a creature's throat with her TEETH down in the caves in Death Bringer. Fair fights are for suckers.

...oh, and not all adults are doofuses.

I'm assuming he's referring to Desmond here, who is very much a doofus- though this statement kind of skips over the fact that Skulduggery, Ghastly, China, Tanith, Bliss and most everyone else except Stephanie/Valkyrie is ALSO an adult, so...

Anyway, what was the point in discussing this here? It's not like this is the only bad review I've ever got. There is one in particular that stands out as being SO unbelievably bad that you get the feeling the reviewer has a personal grudge against me- like he was determined to hate every single thing about the book. But I didn't respond to THAT review. Someone like that is really not worth my time. So why this one?

First of all, the reviewer is not being mean. He doesn't like the book, and the review is quite snarky in its own playful way, but there is not one trace of malice in those words. It's just his opinion, and he not only has a right to HAVE that opinion, but he has a right to SHARE it as well. I'll never give a bad review of any book (apart from maybe books by HUGE writers), because I know how hard it is to get published in the first place and the last thing a writer needs is someone else going "you suck." If I don't like a book I'll simply ignore it. I won't say anything at all about it. But that's me, being in the privileged position that I'm in. Any negative opinion of mine can actually damage someone else's success, so it becomes something more than an opinion. But all this reviewer is doing is letting people know that he didn't respond well to Skulduggery Pleasant.

But again- why am I discussing it here?

Some of you like Twilight. That's fine. I don't like it. Twilight is one of those books I feel I can criticise because nothing I say will effect its success. By now it's untouchable. So... some of you like it. All of you probably know at least a few people who love it. Of course you do.

A few years ago, Stephen King criticised Stephanie Meyer for, you know, not being any good. In return, he got an avalanche of angry responses from Twilight fans.

(I refuse to call them Twihards.)

That level of anger and fury and vitriol is not uncommon on the internet. The internet is the HOME of anger and fury and vitriol. It's where those things live. It's where they spawn and fester and grow. But you see it again and again: one person criticises something that a lot of other people love, and here comes the avalanche. And we're standing by, watching it all happen but not involved one way or the other, and we look at the angry people and we think "Wow. You seriously need to get out more."

The few responses from you guys to this Good Reads review have been wonderful. As I'm writing this, Ivy has just posted another response, and it is just as good-spirited as Georgina's and Beau's and Kristine's (thought Kristine's response DID make me think of Ralph Wiggum from The Simpsons going "Me fail English? That's unpossible!")

You guys are so passionate about Skulduggery and so supportive of me as a writer, and it's moments like these when I realise yet again how lucky I am to have Minions like you. Warm, intelligent, fiery people who won't even be rude to people they strongly disagree with.

You guys rock.

Mmh.

In physics . . . me and my friend C didn't get it, and we didn't know if our multimeter wasn't working or if we were just doing it wrong, so after a while we were just sat there not having a clue what we were meant to be doing whilst everyone else was answering questions on the board (which we didn't understand), and anyway . . . we just sat there and talked.
And we told each other things we found interesting and/or meaningful and we discussed interesting points and things, and it was a rather good conversation, and I've actually really missed our long conversations, and anyway, I wondered - have I learnt more through this conversation than I would have in the lesson if we had been paying attention and knew what we were doing?
And I think the answer may be yes.
And even if it isn't -
what matters more, knowing . . . whatever it is we were meant to be knowing, or thinking about what we were thinking about?
(We were thinking about lots of different things, from bad teachers (some teachers care more about making lessons fun, and some teachers care more about teaching us (and some don't care), and we were saying how the ones who had fun lessons, like our physics teacher (my friend doesn't like her. I'm starting to get why) and my German teacher, were all well and good for year sevens (my friend had my German teacher in year seven and she said she was good), but if you were in year ten and you were like me and my friend and couldn't care less about the fun and actually wanted to LEARN, then they were pretty crap. You all know how angry I get regarding my German teacher, and my and my friend are together in our views of the pointlessness of some of our physics lessons and would much rather be just TAUGHT.
Um . . .
I keep WANDERING OFF FROM THE POINT AND THEN GETTING SO INTO WHAT I'M SAYING I FORGOT WHAT I WAS SPEAKING ABOUT URGH ha C says she does that too . . . at lunch we were discussing how you can create brackets and then go off on a massive thing and forget it's in a bracket, and also about how everything suddenly feels unreal, and it feels a bit like you're dreaming . . .
Um . . .
*scrolls upwards*
Oh yes.)

And even if maybe we could have learnt more from the actual physics lessons
then I'm not sure that matters as much, really
or maybe I'd just rather talk because I find it more interesting
but either way . . .

. . . Well, if I had a point, I'd forgotten it, but um . . .

#ChaseForBookNine

Star Inkbright said...

Ah. Wait.

*from bad teachers to . . . other stuff
*has forgotten what I was going to say there too*
*facepalms*

I blame further maths for this. :P It's probably actually bad for my health. Or my attentiveness, anyway.
I spaced out for ten minutes, and then I realised and I was like oops, and anyway, I was just staring at the board trying to catch up, and when he handed out the sheets later I was like OKAY. THIS IS ALL YOU. YOU CAN PAY ATTENTION PERFCETLY WELL, STOP PRETENDING YOU CAN'T. YOU ARE GOING TO SIT HERE AND DO THE GODDAMNED SHEET.
And I did the first question and I was like oooh that wans't too bad.
And then next moment it was however many minutes later and Sir was doing something on the board and I was not listening and I was just like DAMMIT. XD

It's a bit like being in German. In German I just feel almost unable to actually get my brain to work.
It will work, though. It's me stopping me. I just have to tell myself that I CAN and to stop being stupid. :/

Star Inkbright said...

Oh, and I haven't mentioned yet -

That house.

Hunter's house.

Do you know which name fits it best?

The name that fits it best is MY name.

Which is, understandably, annoying.

Because like, it's MY name.

(It only really needs a first name, btw.)

I mean, my name is a very awesome name, and maybe I should be honoured, but still . . .

I think it's partially because . . . well, Star stands for many things, to me, because it is MY name, and obviously I have had two years to see how the name Star can stand for many aspects of myself, and therefore it can fit many aspects. For this house . . . *shrugs* well, I need a name that can stand for multiple, sometimes contradictory, things, and Star does that.
(but it's MY name)
Also, you know . . . one worry is - if I give the house my name, it will start to be more like me. :/ Not sure how I feel about that.
Whereas if I give it a different name, it will adapt to better fit that name.
When my characters have names . . . their name really stands for them. And their name sounds like them and looks like them and feels like them (in my mind, anyway). And if I'm choosing a name for a character . . . if they have THIS name, they will have to be more like THIS to fit, and I will have to look at them in a more THIS way.
So yeah.
(and, you know, it's MY name)

That said, I've never had a problem with characters called Holly.
But maybe that's because I don't feel like Holly is me. Star, I more do.
It's MY name.
(However, if I think about it, Holly can be more me.
But not as well.
Star really gets it.
Plus I adore the name Star, I really do.)

#ChaseForBookNine

Star Inkbright said...

Although . . . when I think about it, I can adapt Star in many ways, and it can stand for many things, and be many different colours and be many shades of thought, but as soon as I type at it and look at it, my brain just does that recognition thing which tells me it stands for me, that's it's my name.

Urgh.

(I think it's also worth mentioning that the FIRST name I can up with that fitted the house was the name of another character of mine.

CAN THE HOUSE NOT THINK OF A NAME ON ITS OWN???)

Apparently, Fabienne comes from the same root as fava/faba bean.

It is...

I mostly chose it because I've had a connection with the name Abby but didn't want to use Abby directly, and I didn't hate my French-Canadian relatives as much as I do now.

It would be a nice name if it didn't sound/look so much like fabulous, tbh.

Star Inkbright said...

@Lantern: *blinks* Beans.
I think it's a nice name. :)
And, I can call you Abby rather than Lantern, if you'd rather. :)
And - I don't think it's very similar to the word fabulous at all (as in, they have totally different feels to them). That said, you're still fabulous. :P

Fabi S. - Fashion-Conscious Fire Wraith said...

Well, names that mean something to you are always good... I don't know, I've never named a baby.

I like the name Lexie with an e because of this girl from dance (who now spells it without an e). It's probably better that Alexis is Lexi without an e, because I'd have a weird association between her and a character I have named Lexie. Actually I have a couple of Lexie's... But yeah.

Star Inkbright said...

@Lantern: :)
I often have multiple versions of the same character, which turns into different-but-similar characters with the same name, although their names can vary slightly . . .
*compares Morgan to previous versions of her* *frowns slightly at the difference*

Fabi S. - Fashion-Conscious Fire Wraith said...

No, it's alright. I actually like the way Lantern sounds.

And I'd have weird associations with Abby, too... The name means a lot to me, maybe too much. And while something similar is definitely a reflection of who I am, it's... Odd.

Yeah, Fabienne and fabulous are pronounced quite differently, but since Blogland is just words, and I usually say Fabi instead of Fabienne, there's still that similarity which makes me feel like Fabi better suits someone with more confidence and style, you know?

Thanks, though [hugs]

Sorry, listening to LM:)
But also doing German homework -.-

Star Inkbright said...

And - *nods*
Okay. :)

And - fabulous is such a jumpy word with streamers and laughter and rollercoasters and ! and empathise. Fabienne is much quieter. :)
(And is also not a word according to spellcheck.)
How you want to view Fabi depends on your perspective, I guess. :P
I suppose that why I'm having name trouble. It depends how I shift my perception . . .

#ChaseForBookNine

Star Inkbright said...

@Mara: Okay. :)

I think, if I could gey Asylum to stop making me think of Disturbed and those associations - *looks at one of my desktop backgrounds* *looks at CD* *somehow looks at song* - then it could work quite well. -_-

(I've liked the word 'asylum' for a while now though. The associations are hard to shake off. :P)

The thing is . . . it has to fit her as a person and it also has to fit what she is. -_-

I have names that I think maybe fit her personality but then I try to tag 'teleporting house' along with that and it kind of all goes to pot. XD

Well, quieter fits, definitely...

I'm listening to LM as well. :-)

Actually, the song just ended, so I'm listening to Birdy. Nvm. It's on shuffle. :-P

"That level of anger and fury and vitriol is not uncommon on the internet. You seriously need to get out more.""

:/ True, Derek, true.

I am rather fond of shuffle. People come on and you're like OH MY GOSH THEY'RE AWESOME and then someone else comes on and you're like OH MY GOHS THEY'RE AWESOME TOO and then someone else comes on and you're like OH MY GOSH THEY'RE ALL AWESOME and then you just like die.
But at least you die with the knowledge that you had very good music taste. :P

Dear God
The only thing I ask of you
Is to hold her when I'm not around
When I'm much too far away
We all need
That person who can be true to you
I left her when I found her
And now I wished I'd stayed

(You know those songs that you just avoid for ages and then you stop avoiding them and you're like OH MY GOSH THEY'RE AWESOME?)

Crying...

Again...

Shit.

Should I repost my videos from my old account? I should have them all in some format or other...

Star Inkbright said...

@Lantern: *shrugs helplessly*
I love your videos deds. :) :) :)
They're really amazing. :)
(My fingers just typed 'away' then. How the HELL do you get 'away' from that, and surely I type 'amazing' more often?)

@Lantern: *whispers* I sort of lose track.

That's a beautiful line. :) :)

Mmh. I have songs that make me cry loads, but then after a while it wears off . . . *shrugs* It's rather sad, really. I suppose you become desensitized.

And - okay. :)

And - . . . *remembers* Ah. I'm not sure how many I ave, but I think it isn't . . . that . . . many?

Back. I've got a bit of a break.

The thing I love about videos is that you can express so much more with them than you can with just black and white words on a page. :-)

Star Inkbright said...

@Lantern: *nods like a nodding person* :)

I get that. :)

And maybe that's why your videos are so amazing.

Or maybe it's just because you made them and you're amazing. :P

(Or both.)

And, um - I JUST ALMOST FAINTED.
I was standing up, and I felt sick, and I was just thinking how crap it would be to throw up, and then my vision starting fading out and I was going light-headed so I curled up in a ball on the floor and closed my eyes, and there was still a ringing in my head (people say 'ringing in your ears', but the only reason it would be in your ears is because you can hear it and your ears hear), and then after a bit I stood up again, and then I felt sick so I crouched on the floor for a bit, and now I think I'm fine.
I had two injections this morning (one in each arm. XD After I'd done the whole go-out-of-lessons stand-in-queue-and-listen-to-people-freak-out get-asked-if-you're-pregnant get-needle-jabbed-in-arm go-back-to-lessons thing, I was pretty much fine and mostly forgot about this (this is the fourth time I can remember having (an) injection(s), and when we first them in year eight we were all stressing about how our arms hurt when we lifted them but really I'm not bothered now), and I think it was possibly a side effect from that, but I've decided not to worry about it, because I can chose to worry or not, and I'd rather not. :P
It may explain why I've been excessively inattentive today, though . . .

And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free

They're not listening still

Perhaps they never will

I'm fine, I think. :)

I didn't really act fast. :P I just acted sensibly. Which is easy to do, when you're alone in a room and don't have to worry about people talking at you.

How are you? :)

Did you ever get caught up in the lyrics of American Pie too, Fabi? xD Don Mclean writes some fantastic lyrics.

@Lantern: I got the first part. I half-got the second part. Beautiful/sad/meaningful songs are . . . not 'awesome', because that doesn't really do justice to the meaningfulness, but you know what I mean, I hope . . .

She lives in the shadow of a lonely girl
Voice so quiet you don't hear a word,
Always talking but she can't be heard,

You can see it there if you catch her eye,
I know she's brave but it's trapped inside,
Scared to talk but she don't know why,

Wish I knew back then,
What I know now,
Wish I could somehow,
Go back in time and maybe listen to my own advice,

I'd tell her to speak up, tell her to shout out,
Talk a bit louder, be a bit prouder,
Tell her she's beautiful, wonderful,
Everything she doesn't see,

You gotta speak up, you gotta shout out,
And know that right here, right now,
You can be beautiful, wonderful,
Anything you wanna be,

Little me

Yeah you got a lot of time to act your age,
You cannot write a book from a single page,
Hands on the clock only turn one way,

(Yeah)

Run too fast and risk it all,
Can't be afraid to take a fall,
Felt so big but you looked so small,

Wish I knew back then,
What I know now,
Wish I could somehow,
Go back in time and maybe listen to my own advice,

I'd tell her to speak up, tell her to shout out,
Talk a bit louder, be a bit prouder,
Tell her she's beautiful, wonderful,
Everything she doesn't see.

You gotta speak up, you gotta shout out,
And know that right here, right now,
You can be beautiful, wonderful,
Anything you wanna be, oh,
Little me

Little me

Tell you one thing I would say to her

I'd tell her to speak up, tell her to shout out,
Talk a bit louder, be a bit prouder,
Tell her she's beautiful, wonderful,
Everything she doesn't see.

You gotta speak up, you gotta shout out,
And know that right here, right now,
You can be beautiful, wonderful,
Anything you wanna be,
Little me

I'd tell her to speak up, tell her to shout out,
Talk a bit louder, be a bit prouder,
