As I see it, the choir competition would be the option for staying "loyal" (in effect) to your choir teacher. And the SYAMF is larger, more official, and as such would be the "ambition" option. So to me it would be a simple choice, and I would pick the choir competition.
However, first you need, as I said, to make a list of reasons for going to each competition. Whichever has the most - go for that one.)

Storms, I should have said what Sophia did . . . lists Rlare pretty much my magic cure for everything. If a list is unbalanced, ut's easy. If a list is balanced, I'm nightmarishly stuck unless someone offers another argumemt and helps me out.
I mean, when I gave a pist, the worrying part of my beain ditches the list and starts worrying over thinks that aren't even issues. But that's good, brcause I can then see when I'm beimg illogical.

Like, Kaladin's little brother Tien loves rocks, and he's alwats finding rocks he deems 'special' (Kaladin thinks they all look the same). And sometimes he gives one to Kaladin, to cheer him up. And if he never gave anyone his special rocks, but one time he gave one to Kaladin, and Kaladin refused it, Tien might feel really hyrt. But as Tien gives Kakadin rocks every now and then, then if Kaladin refuses one once, it's okay because although Tien might be hurt, he knows Kaladin appreciated his other rocks, and if the next time he offers Kaladin a rock, Kaladin takes it, then it's kind of set things in balance again?
Well, I know Tien loves rocks and occasionally gives them to Kaladin to cheer him up, and I know that Kaladin usually acceots the rocks because of the fact they're a gift, and judging from the fact they've spent so many years seeing each other ever day, I assume Kaladin's got impatient and said "Not now, Tien" at some point or other, and I assume Kaladin made it up to Tien some point later.

I think this is where metaphors fail a bit.
Tien doesn't pay for his rocks, but he spends a lot of time finding special ones and it's probably something that he gives them to Kaladin as opposed to keeping them.
Did you mum pick SYAMF specially for you, or did she pay for it because she's always paid for it? Because there's a difference between personal presents and impersonal presents.
However, if it's going to cut into you that much not to go to SYAMF - how would you feel if you said "Okay, I'll go"? Would you be cut as deep if you didn't go to the choir festival?
If you would be cut just as deep for both, then it's sad you'll be cut for not going to SYAMF, but you have to remember that it's not your fault and that, metaphorically, you couldn't take Tien's rock because you were helping Lirin in the surgery and if you stopped and looked at rocks, someone could have died.
