This time around, my publishers took into account that I'd be in Australia/NZ for the previous two weeks, so I reckon they took pity on me. Maybe it was all the manly crying I did. We'll never know...
Eagle-eyed Irish readers may also have noticed that I shall be appearing on the "Celebrity Mastermind" quiz show, starting on TV3 this Sunday. I'm not sure what episode I'm on (I think it airs on July 1st but I'm not sure). For those who don't know, Mastermind is a show where you are asked questions about a chosen topic, and then you're asked general knowledge questions. I'm not going to say ANYTHING about what happened (we recorded it a few weeks ago) so you'll just have to watch to see how well I did. Or not, as the case may be. Ahem.

Because she's the first strong female lead in a book that I ever read. I first read this book four years ago. Before any of this was about. She's so real to me, I understood her completely and I still do.

Valkyrie... for starters, she's not that bright, although she can't help that, she's deep but thin, waxy almost, she's darquesse, sure, but she can be so cold and so... dead...

its never mattered to me whether they're female or male. its never mattered whether they're lead or not. Take finbar- take him in the last book. he's seen something so freakishly horrible that he can't see anymore... i mean, can you imagine?
*shrugs* I like her, she's sarcastic and funny and she's got more depth to her than you think. I know it. She puts a lot of bravado and meanness on the surface so people don't bother to look deeper.
i do look deeper. as i said, she's got depth, but just because its there doesnt mean ii have to like what its filled with.

I dont have a first name or anything for either of these two charecters, but here goes
the easy one is my 'main' charecter.
names in the story go like this. you have a true name, a given name(naturally) and a third name, not unlike in Derek's books. the difference is, in my story there is a right third name, one that almost no one finds. its not uncommon to let someone else give you your third name, or to use your middle given name as your first third name, or as your third middle name.
its not like in skulduggery, where there is a 'book of names', and it would seem there is no way to be sure when you have your right name. but once you have it...
you know. some dont even beleive in three right names.
the first charecter is easy... i have her first third name narrowed down to two.
her given name is Abigail livia Belire
her first third name is either Tara or Karina, and i'd keep her middle name but no last name.

Senka is a good last name that I filed away in my brain but never used it means 'shadow' in... Serbian? *shakes head* I can't remember

Discovery of a Life Time
My name is Melancholia Cain. I’m in South America, Columbia and searching for the Golden City of Eldorado. The date: 23rd of August, 1919. I cannot forget who I am and why I am here, I must stay focused.
I’m forgetting what the light of day looks like. I cautiously watch my step as I pace down a tunnel that runs through this monstrous mountain, like a vein in the human heart. I don’t know what I will find: I hope that is not something unpleasant. The cavern walls are jagged with sharp rocks and chilling water. I can hear myself panting and my heartbeat racing. The soaring cave ceiling drops icy water down my neck that sends shivers crawling down my spine. I’m trying to be silent, for I fear that I’m not alone.
I’m being observed, deciphered to whether I’m a threat or not. I am a deer being shadowed by a hunter. Questions race through my mind. It’s as dark as a raven’s wing. I can’t see anything but the faint light up ahead. Shadows cloud my thoughts. As light becomes larger, running footsteps around me become faster. I can’t see them, but can hear them.
I can only just resist the desire to stop, turn around and live for another day.
‘Live another day?’ I think to myself. Why would I even consider that I won’t make it out of here wealthy and with proof that the Golden City of Eldorado is real? I have made it this far, although I have lost a beloved friend in this phenomenal adventure.
There is nothing I would want more than relish in the heat of a flickering fire while watching the dancing flames rise and to wash the blood of my colleagues from my scarred hands. Being one of the wealthiest people alive drove them mad, then finally to their death.
I reach the end of the tunnel to find the most magnificent sight anyone could ever see. My body floods with pure joy and excitement. The tunnel opens up to a cavern that was big enough to fit an entire civilisation. And that’s exactly what I found. People said that Eldorado was in Lake Guatavita, but they were wrong. It was under it, and the light that fills the cave is being released from the temples that were handcrafted from gold and the striking reflection repelling off the crystal clear water that runs in-between them. Plants of all sorts grow, even when they have no access to sunlight. It was magnificent.
In the centre of city, a vast golden statue of Chief Eldorado – The Gilded One - who covered himself with gold dust then dived into a sacred lake to wash it off his body. Around the monument, the streets are clear and but various stalls lined up, as though people lived here. Impossible, the last people here were the fierce Muiscsa tribe 300 years ago. Something is different and almost wrong. It is silent, too silent. The hunter is lining up his shot.
Suddenly, I hear an ungodly war cry, and look down to see the tip of a spear that has been pierced through my chest.
