Basically, I'm building up a list of my influences over the years, and I'm sneaking them into the books. It totally WOULD be idea-snatching if I included a reference and pretended it was original and all mine, but I don't. Every reference is so blatantly obvious that it should be clear where it's from- to the people who know, anyway.
There's actually an official name for it, Star. It's called a "homage". It's basically paying someone respect by referencing them or their work in your own work.
Now, let's not confuse this with people actually ripping off other people's ideas. It wouldn't be paying homage to The Princess Bride if I adapted the plot and characters and disguised it as a Skulduggery story- THAT would be a rip-off! And where's the fun in THAT?

Not necrssarily Cat. Although, the best books have more than one main character. SOME brilliantish books, like the Inkheart trilogy, don't have one indentifiable Main Character. I like that.

I like main characters, I like strong female leads in particular but main characters with flaws are the best. All to often authors make their characters the best in the world and it sucks. Bad. Because they always win and that's just lame. In order to be a strong character you have to lose a few times.

I'm sorry you're missing the forums! :) They technically are still there, all the information is safe and well, it's just being held hostage by the hosting company until... well as said by others; until I can pay up.
Sadly, I don't have the kind of money they are asking for right now, so I've been thinking of accepting some donations (and members from the forums have very kindly offered to help save the place).
However, the site does not get much traffic, and while the users are dedicated and awesome people, it has been a struggle to outreach to other fans who may not know about us.

I can never see what people like about my stories, I just write them on the spur of the moment and don't really go over them again.
I do, I rewrote the beginning of Sky so many times. I've changed the last 5,000 round, like literally taken 2,500 and swapped it with the other 2,500 and then am in the process of making it make sense. But that's not fun. It's difficult. It will take time but it will make more sense I hope. It's the whole love story bit I can't get right. Maybe because I've never been in love. *sigh*
