Derek responded to me on Twitter on January 16th 2017. "I use the blog when I have something to say that deserves a blog post. Unfortunately, most things these days come out via Twitter."
I guess he just finds it easier to write on Twitter (and probably reach more people and interact with a wider community) while still retaining the blog for when he wants to write a lengthier message specifically to his fans.

@Sav: Try saving just ten minutes for yourself to do nothing but relax. Like, sir or lie down, don't think of future/present projects, and relax all the muscles in your body. Listening to calming music should help too. Just ten minutes and I bet you'd feel better.

I don't know if any will read this but I just wanted to give one last thanks to everyone here for those good times when this blog was active in the comments. Thank you all for such great memories.

@Amethyst: Sounds like you're not coming back... I hope you do, even if it's just for another small comment like that one.
@Sav: A's kinda right... I mean, it was fun for those who participated, but in my honest opinion, we lost the quality time just talking about ourselves and our lives... I mean, we still did that in the role play days, but back when there were constant rps going on, people got so focused on the stories and characters they're playing that they sometimes forgot or ignored real life talk...
To me, as an older generation before the constant rping, it was a little disheartening...
But /you/ had fun and made happy memories here, and that's what really counts, I suppose.
Also, Derek seemed to comment more when the comments weren't all focused on everyone's characters... but maybe that was around the time he got more into Twitter and it had nothing to do with the role playing. This is just speculation.
Anyway, I hope I didn't make you upset. Here are some more cookies to make up for my biased opinion.

It is... I mean, just- trust me, I've talked with laura a lot about this, and I'm convinced that it was the roleplaying.
Yes, it was fun for some. But it wasn't ever in the best interests of everyone.
Regardless, the chances of resuscitating this blog are nil. It's not dead, it's an endangered species so close to being snuffed out like ambient light. Derek's not going to be his old self here- ever. That was partially our fault.
But I'm class, we learn that life is always evolving, too. The internet changes, more so than life, and social media that once was is no longer.
@A: I've always been optimistic about things, and now's not so different. I agree that life and social media are in constant changes, and that Derek may no longer post for months, but let's consider this:
It's possible that, since most people stopped coming, the /comments/ themselves might start changing... I mean, role playing has stopped, Derek's writing a new SP book. I'm still holding out on the hope that new fans will find the blog and maybe restore it? As long as someone is here to greet them and restart the process of using the comment space as a way to make friends and talk about anything with.
Even if Derek and the blog will never be the same again, it's still a possibility.
And maybe it's a far fetched hope, but that /is/ what I took for my last name. :P I'm always full of hope.
And I'll conclude with a thought... Don't you think there've been more comments recently? I know most of it was mine, but with Sav visiting often again, you commented twice, and some others in between, we've had more comments in the last few days than there've been in months. Who knows? :)
Me and my friends only talk online because we started to roleplay. I used to only see them at school, and now we're offline all the time. It's not necessarily a friendship killer, it can be the opposite. But Cat's one of those people who won't usually talk to you online unless she finds it relevant, and it's like I have to wait until I actually see her again before I can properly talk to her. With me and with everyone here, we're the kind of people who can exist online as much or more than we can exist offline. And so maybe discouraging us to merely exist was a killer.
Nah. I think the force of the role play was only ever balancing, bringing people together as it took us apart. If you ask me, it's just technology updates. People have always left the blog, but the difference is now that there's no one to replace them. The kids these days have Snapchat and Insta, and compared to social media platforms that actually WORK, no one's gonna want to, or even THINK of, sticking around dealing with this shit. It's just been left in the dust.
But I guess we'll always just have our own opinions.
(Didn't this Blog start because Derek wrote Skulduggery? I kinda get the feeling that since Skulduggery stopped people stopped coming back here. Idk I could be wrong. But also I feel like it's got to the point where no one new was joining and everyone that was still on slowly grew up and away from the blog, I mean I left for a bit because of GCSEs and I felt swamped with work (I still do tbh) but yeah loads of people have gone off to the big bad real world of work after school or to university or are too busy with other exams and we just aren't getting new people. :/
I do agree with the social media problem though, with everyone using snapchat and instagram.)

Just one mans 5p on this matter, it's slowed down here because as all that's been discussed has said life reasons and all sorts of others too i remember back when I used to comment loads there were numerous clashes but this is the Internet and it happens.
But anyway happy memories are needed like xD I would be here more often but I spend almost all my nights on FaceTime (iPhone thing) with my close friend who's like more than a friend but not a girlfriend (yet?) anyway I'm rambling like fuck as I always do (old habits die hard)

Having this convo at school is always much more boring because half of us are tigers and the other half are rabbits XD
For the record I wasn't insulting Derek or anything. I love when people express their opinions or emotions and people are like "it's not your choice". If anything I was just replying to those who had previously said "the blog isn't dead, Derek will post when the new covers are released" and it's like, well, no, he hasn't and probably won't.
He replied to me on twitter too, but it seems pretty obvious that he isn't worried about the blog anymore. Maybe it's just personal taste but I find twitter really disappointing. In a way it's similar to the comments sections of this blog, but without the actual blog posts: Derek is making small remarks and replying to people, but there's rarely any substantial updates, and if there is you have trawl back through hundreds of tweets to find them.
I don't mind a change in platform, I just feel like there's a lack of a central platform at all.
Also, @Lavander, yeah, as a long time fan the constant roleplaying to the point of ignoring people was disheartening. It also made it difficult for new people to join. And I mean no disrespect to people involved, because it was good for them, and hey I was part of it for a while too - but it did eventually overcome the entire comments section.
Oh don't worry. I can ignore people just as well when I'm not role playing.

anyone remember me, Egg? i frequented here lots couple of years ago, for a year. got busy. It's a shame blogland for the best part has just.. stopped. i'd met some good people here, and while i can't say any heartfelt message about how this place changed me, (if I'd stayed, maybe it would've changed how I am now), it's like forgetting about lighting a bonfire, and coming back to see it just sparking out of life after remembering about it years later.
i'm sad to see so many nice things go in this world, and i'm not really aligned as an optimist or pessimist either so it's quite strange for me to say that out loud.
