With Desolation only a few days away, I am still hard at work on the third and final Demon Road book.
From the beginning, I wanted these books to be as streamlined as possible — I wanted them short and punchy. Now, I completely failed with Demon Road, as it was a pretty big book, and only got slightly better with Desolation, which is shorter, but it looks like I'm finally getting the hang of this with Book 3, which will hopefully be the perfect length.

I don't know, I know I do it but it doesn't feel right to address people's appearance insecurities with "you ARE pretty." It's like a response to the symptom and not to the problem. I think is harder to fix the problem though so what can you do.
But yeah . . . either way, beauty is subjective; if you're beautiful on the inside people will be more likely to view you as beautiful on the outside; and if someone is only friends with you/going out with you/interacting with you fir the way you look on the outside, then they'Re not really the kind of person you want to be associating with . . . and if not, it's all good. I know these two girls called Hollie (not me. another Hollie) and Maddy, and they have RIDICULOUSLY different appearances. Hollie is . . . well she's not that thin, and she doesn't wear makeup, and there's no issue with the clothing she wears but I don't think she particularly wears it for its beauty, and she never does anything different with her hair. Maddy on the other hand looks a bit like a model (I don't just mean that as a compliment, I mean the amount she looks like a model is rather scary). She's naturally ridiculously thin (so thin yous be worried about her if she wasn't always eating), and she wears tons of makeup but it's quite artfully done, and she wears like crop tops and skinny jeans plus this artful weird neck jewellery (she ties like lace around her neck) and she beautifully styles her hair somehow. And they look so completely oppositional and they have SUCH completely different appearance ideals . . . you wouldn't think they'd even get along. Yet they're like best friends and they just . . . you know when two people know each other really well and get along so well it's actually slightly exclusive to other people because you're automatically an outsider? Yeah like that.
And idk you watch them together and you wonder what they must think of each others appearance, because trying to look pretty is clearly a big deal to Maddy and it's clearly not to Hollie (not that I'm she's ugly, she just doesn't put excess amounts of effort in like Maddy dkes), but it doesn't seem to matter to them. Because they're just friends.
And to some extent, that happens to everyone with their friends. Lizzie's constantly insisting she's fat, and we keep trying to tell her she's not, but honestly whether she is or isn't fat matters very little to us. And then Cat and Lizzie wear makeup and me and Darcie don't, and the other day Darcie casually referenced not wearing makeup and Cat was like "Oh, do you not?" because she hadn't even realised.
Your appearance will honestly matter a lot more to you than it does to anyone else.
But yeah, I know it's pretty much impossible to just simply not care about how you look. I don't care that much, buy I still care somewhat. So my advice would just be to wear what you think looks good and what makes you somewhat happier, and whenever you get insecure about the way you look, just tell yourself it's okay because everyone thinks that regardless of how pretty they are and that you can't objectively judge your own face, and tell yourself that even if you don't look good, it's okay because no one will judge you too badly. And the more you tell yourself it's okay, the more it'll sink in, even if the insecuries may never completely go away.
