Behold the awesome!
On April 5th, in London, as part of my tour, we are offering a day at the movies, where I will be discussing the many movie influences that have shaped my life and, more specifically, that have shaped the Demon Road trilogy.
We are breaking the day into two halves.
At 1 PM, younger readers, accompanied by an adult, can go to the Picturehouse Cinema in London and experience 80's comedy-horror classic GREMLINS on the big screen...! It'll be my first time seeing it up there too — I've only ever seen this film on TV, so I am HUGELY excited.
Desolation will be available to buy, I'll be doing a Q&A, and signing whatever you have. It's going to be FUN.
And then we'll be repeating the format at 8:30 that night, when we'll be showing the original A Nightmare on Elm Street to a STRICTLY over-18 crowd...!
Again, I was too young to see this in the movies when it came out, and as one of my all time favourite horrors, I can't wait to see this in all its glory.

The last several times you've been here, you've gone on about how this place is damaging and we're all horrible people. If you stay, chances are you'll feel like that again at some point. Given all that, do you really want to be here? Maybe this time will be different, but I'm not feeling optimistic. I've had a bad week. If you go into "you're all terrible people who don't care about anyone" mode, I don't think I have the ability to deal with that right now.
Would I love it if you were here and and enjoyed yourself and nothing bad happened? Of course!
Do I think that scenario is at all likely? No.

My aunt found him outside(his mama is still around, but they decided to bring him in and take care of him themselves, which is the first time we got to keep a cat inside).
And he's now my baby.
I get to feed him and he's sleeping on my vest, which I'm letting him keep since it's almost as comfortable as sleeping with a blanket. He's only about a month old. Too young to leave his mama, but they did anyway.
So I'll be his mama. And I'm very protective.
I'm not letting them take him. Not this one.
But I need a name for him. He's rather shy, but still really curious for a baby. He's so tiny though...

Aquila, there are a lot of people on this blog who see psychologists, psychiatrists, and therapists. And what you're saying can be very insulting, so please be careful.
I believe in psychology. Humans develop in complex ways, and it is just trying to explain why we are who we are. There is nothing wrong with that.
No, Inky, there isn't anything wrong about trusting a psychologist. At all. They are trained professionals whose job is to help and support you.

I just . . . if you have a really good friend it's fairly normal to trust them with your life, regardless of whether that friend is a physicist or an English teacher or a psychologist.
Some psychologists are really shitty people, because there are a lot of psychologists and in every large group of people you get shitty people. But some are really really awesome. And I don't think it's desperate at all.
Also I'm not entirely sure what you humans study in psychology, but I refusebto believe that you can study that hard into something and it be, like, idk, unworthy of being studies.

That wasn't a result of people who were truly dedicated to studying the brain. A lot of that was a result of a deformed society who took advantage of and preyed on the disabled, knowing that society didn't see them as human enough to save, and to care for properly.
I mean, politicians once made it legal to have slaves.
But I doubt anyone here would deny that politics is important.
It isn't fair to compare a current institution to its actions in the past. Especially if other people have used it to justify their own personal cruelty

I'm sorry I insultet you guys, I really am. But psychologists hold so much power over other people that it scares me. So, I'm sorry that I leat my personal doubts and fears hurt you.
And no, biology DOES NOT stay within limitations when experimenting. We... you don't want to hear it. Just... trust me when I say, we do not stay within anything you'd consider ethical, if you care about animals.
Of course, we try to keep the suffering and eath low.
But we still make them suffer and die.
And the one time biologists (and doctors) got a chance to work on humans, they did make humans suffer and die. Scientists STILL don't agree whether it's ethical to use the results of those works or not.
^Point being, no, you shouldn't just randomly trust in any psychologist you meet. But they are trained professionals and some of them will he like intelligent and awesome and worthy of being trusted. So no, it's not desperate.

Plenty of people hold power. Doctors, politicians, people who make medicines. Psychologists aren't special in that regard.
Doctors aren't scientists. Doctors work with whatever heals, they don't need to know why it works. They just need to know THAT it works.
That's, by the way, the best thing about medicine. Medicine would be horribly inhumane if you needed to not treat some patients to be sure the treated ones actually got healed from what you did.

A psychologist or psychiatrist can take away a lot of your rights as a human, just by diagnosis. That's what scares me. That you can suddenly be considered to have less right to decide over your life than a child.
And the case of that man I mentioned? That's not some old stuff. I think he got out of that mental institute last year or the year before. At last.

Technically viruses are environmental but that has a big biological impact.

You know who else can do that?
A court judge.
The point nowadays is to let people have full access of rights, regardless of if they are criminally insane, regardless if they have Down's syndrome, or if they have mental retardation. A person is a person, even if they have a disability. And who are we to say that those people are "less than"? Because they aren't. We can do assessments and experiments and things, but that does not mean that they are inhuman, just because they are different.
But the backlash, the whole "send them away from the real world" did not come from psychology. It came from us, the society

I'm also going to point out one more thing.
Psychology is not just about mental illness and diagnoses.
That is probably one of the smaller sects of it

Most of us have one that's transmitted by cats.
It makes us like cats more.
It MEANS to make mice none-scared of cats so the mouse can be eaten and it can keep developing in his new host, the cat.

I think the thing about sciences is that they tend to be defined as understanding how stuff works - and that means being able to generalise the findings to any other situation - and if it doesn't apply you find out why not, and you adjust your theory.
In psychology, that generalisation is the problem - because people are so, so, so bloody complex. Even analysing just one person is difficult, because it's comprised completely of abstract concepts which can be very difficult to understand. And there are so many things going on in the mind and we can't even SEE any of it and--- we don't even know what the 'mind' is, not really. And of course it doesn't help that we can't really test it, either. So generalising even /within one individual/ is difficult from a psychologist's point of view.
And then we get to generalising BETWEEN people but ever human is so different and it's just nigh on impossible to find a rule that applies to everybody. Because of the massive scope. And testing consistently is even harder, now. Psychology is actually such a difficult science to understand, that's what makes it hard for some to class it as a science at all. It's not belittling it in any way (and I think you've got it wrong if you feel that way), it's saying, "it's too big for us to deal with". It's hard to be totally 'scientific' because we don't currently understand very much at all, when you look at everything yet to be understood.
And, bear in mind - even physics, which is often said to be the 'purest' science - we haven't got to that stage of complete generalisation yet. Just look at the split between classical and quantum physics. They don't add up together.
Psychology understanding the human mind is a bit like physics understanding the whole universe - that's the goal and it's a noble effort and there's nothing wrong with it at all, and there's nothing to say it isn't important, but it's never going to be easy and we just don't know how to do all of it yet. But that doesn't make it any the less reputable to try.
