80,000 words and some HORROR

I have now crossed the 80,000 word mark in Desolation. You know what that means?

It's a proper book now.

Demon Road was a little over 121,000. I had wanted it to be 80,000, which is roughly the size of Dark Days. Obviously, that didn't happen. But I am DETERMINED that Desolation be of a  more manageable size. It'll probably end up somewhere around the 100,000 mark.

Writing a book can be a struggle. It's just so happened that in the writing of this one, every time I started to flow, and write LOTS, I had to go off on tour or do festivals or get interrupted for a multitude of reasons. It's very hard to build up any kind of rhythm when your writing schedule is kinda messed up.

But I'm flowing now. I want to get this latest draft off to my editor on Monday, because on Tuesday I'm off on holiday to Disneyworld and Universal Studios.

For Halloween.

Ooooooh this is gonna be my kind of holiday. By day, we go to Magic Kingdom, and go on rides and visit Harry Potter world and just have good, nice lovely fun...

But at night...

Universal Studios over Halloween has the most terrifying horror experiences on offer, and I will be going and subjecting my girlfriend to the ordeal. I'm going to tweet about it. I'm going to take videos. You may see me scream.

But it shall be a manly scream. A WAR CRY.

And then I'll run away and leave Laura to face this guy on her own.

Gonna be FUN.

I really do not care what it was. It was what it was ^_^ thx k :P ..and the presentation could have been taken as funny as well...as i put "thank you for listening" at the end, after saying something completely out of the blue, and semi-funny (imo). so yeah. Understanding a certain level of humor is not easy.

Inky Flame said...

(But it wasn't clever ... It was a blunt statement

A joke must be witty ...)

Star Inkbright said...

@Fera: I think you have several issues here (I mean, issues that arise when you try to be humorous, not, like, issues with your head. Like. Um. Yeah. Not trying to insult you.)

- You have the kind of humour that not many other people share
- You have the kind of humour that a lot of people here are actively /against/, as opposed to merely not understanding
- A lot of the jokes you make won't work as well on the internet as people can't hear tone and don't really know how to interpret what you're saying

So. Um. Yeah.
I'm pretty sure I had a purpose when I decided to construct that list, but I've forgotten what it was so, um, yeah, it would probably benefit us to keep my little pointless list in mind.

Feraaaa32 said...

I really do not care if many people don't get it. The ones who do have a great laugh. You can always learn to understand different humor. If you are not willing to, I will still make my jokes.

That's your opinion of a joke. I have ascended that kinda humor and now laugh at my type, and the witty type as well. and make both.

Star Inkbright said...

@Chloe: Actually, a joke is anything that is intended to be funny and that people find funny. There are lots of varieties of jokes.

Catherine really struggles to understand jokes, so the question "what even are jokes" has gone through my mind quite a lot when trying to explain to her why things are humorous, and I have concluded (without evidence, pureply by theorising) that humorous statements are essentially statements that, metaphorically, push certain buttons in our heads that make us experience amusement. The thing is, people have different buttons, and people without, say, Button Number 24 will be unable to understand what's amusing about certain statements that are designed to push Button 24 in the audience's head.
Um . . . once again, I've kind of forgotton what my point was, but yeah, jokes are statements designed to push humour buttons.

Fera was just trying to push a button that exists in very few people's heads.

John said...

(That isn't humor it's randomly spouting off inappropriate nonsense in the hope that someone out there is as immature as yourself.)

Star Inkbright said...

@Fera: I guess the real question is whether it's worth pissing off and offending people to potentially give some people a good laugh.
I mean, if it's worth it for you then fine, go ahead; I'm just advising you to think about it.

Inky Flame said...

(I guess... But the jokes I find funny are witty

Exactly john ^.^)

Star Inkbright said...

@John: *laughs* I suppose that's a differently-(and-more-offensively)-worded version of my button theory.

Edward Fletcher said...

A joke is a statement or set of statements set up to create humour, jokes are told to make people laugh, if people do not laugh and the general view is that it was a "bad joke" then you shouldn't use it again and if you know that the majority will not find it funny then not used at all. A bad joke will single handedly cost you an entire performance and gain you a reputation as unfunny.

Feraaaa32 said...

Pissing off and offending? How did I offend anyone with that? Jezuz, i sometimes wonder...

OH and shut up john, I don't care about your opinion.

Star Inkbright said...

@Chloe: That's because you have those buttons.

I don't even know which buttons I have. :P I have tried to work it out when thinking about these questions, but didn't get very far.

I guess the point I wanted to make with my button theory is that no one's humour is superior to anyone else's humour just because you don't find someone else's humour funny. We all just have different buttons.

Edward Fletcher said...

Fera, it wasn't a joke as there was no hidden meaning to interpret or any follow up to add humour, it was not a joke, it was a statement.

Star Inkbright said...

@Jack: Ummmm . . . good point actually. :)

@Fera: Well, you clearly offended some people because they told you not to say it in case children heard it.

It goes like this:

Ethan: Alright, I have a really good knock-knock joke, but someone else has to start it. Can you start it?
Me: Okay. Knock knock.
Ethan: Who's there?
Me: . . .

XD

Catherine said "I don't get why it's funny" and he told her that the funny thing was their expression when they realised they couldn't answer.
My point is - the humour in jokes can come from all kinds of sources, not necessarily words themselves.

Now, gtg for dinner.

Feraaaa32 said...

No, just because I don't care bout him :P And it's his opinion anyways... I see it as a type of humor. I am just trying to spare his energy, as I don't care. But i guess you could put the different type of humor as immature. I don't give a shit either way ^_^

Oh and well... as to jack's statement...I am actually done conforming to people. I am a very interior personality type of person. I have done enough with the conforming stuff. Now, whether that will make people like me or dislike me...is completely irrelevant. When i find something funny, I'll post it in the hope of making a few people laugh. I'll try to ignore offending, but that's about it.

Inky Flame said...

(Conformity and obedience is essential in society)

Feraaaa32 said...

To a certain extent. Until you become your own individual. If you rely on people too much, they'll just hinder you. You've just gotta learn to live with the consequences of not conforming most the times, if you decide so. And I have decided.

I've not found anyone as driven as me... *sad face* Oh also, if everyone just conformed, society would not really progress and perhaps some morally wrong things would be accepted as normal. Also, you need people that DON'T conform, so that they can become leaders, act for people as a model.

btw, just a last note about the sense of humor i've developed about a year ago... If you hear it in person, it's be much easier to explain how it's funny. But as it is not in person, you'll just have to deal with knowing that it is a certain type of funny, and yes some people do find that funny.

Feraaaa32 said...

I partially agreed with the statement that sometimes logic can lead to immoral things...however, I don't think that logic is dead :P

Star Inkbright said...

(Mathematical logic doesn't work out of maths.

If a table is green, that doesn't mean green is a table.

Society - "the aggregate of people living together in a more or less ordered community"
(Thank you Google.)

Society is basically people living together in a community.

Friend - "a person with whom one has a bond of mutual affection, typically one exclusive of sexual or family relations"
(Yay for Google.)

Friends are basically people we experience mutual platonic affection with.

In order for people to regard you with affection, they usually have to like you first.
This usually requires acting nicely towards them and caring about what they think.
If you do this to all people or at least most people, this means you are acting nicely and acceptably to most people.
This means you are acting nicely and acceptably towards /society/.

Essentially, what I'm getting at it, society is made up of people, adn if you want most people to like you, you have to conform to society (or rather, just conform to most people. Whcih is the same thing).

If you don't conform to society, you have to learn to deal with the fact that most people won't accept you and that friends will be hard for you to find.

I don't conform to society, which is why I have so few friends.
I tend to think that this is, for me, worth it. Or maybe I just hope it is.
Point being, you have to decide whether the lack of friends is worth it or not, because if you don't conform they WILL be harder to find.

Oh incidentally Fera, what the fuck is wrong with your school/college wherever? Or is it just mine that has something wrong with it? At my school, in my year group, you can find offensive people everywhere within a stone's throw (or a bit of paper's throw, to make my metaphor more appropriate), and I'm sure if you just went to my school and hung out in my common room you'd find waaaaay more people who'd appreciate your humour than you do here. People here are ridiculously nice and inoffensive compared to what I'm used to at school (although you have to bear in mind that all the nice people at school scare me because they're so normal, so I tend to gravitate away from them).

I assumed my school was just normal, but apparently not . . . either my school is very fucked up or yours is. O_o

I acutally think mine might be fucked up.

Dayyyyyymmmmmmmmmm my school is fucked up and I never even realised!!!

*brain explosion*

Inky Flame said...

(Logic and EMOTION must walk hand in hand)

Star Inkbright said...

I actually think I might do an EPQ on the logic vs. emotions debate.

I suppose I owe you a thank you for the idea, Fera. :P

Actually it might just be me that's fucked up due to my gravitating-away-from-nice-people thing.

. . .

. . .

. . .

Well I already knew I was fucked up so meh. :P

Feraaaa32 said...

that's what i meant, when i said "I have decided" I can deal with not having many friends...Because i believe I am better off as a leader as i do have leadership skills, the coldness and ruthlessness when needed are definitely a part of me.

Feraaaa32 said...

I go around school shouting offensive things btw. So yeah, about that :P

Star Inkbright said...

@Fera: Okay fairy nuff.

Although in a democracy lots of people have to like you to vote you as their leader.

O_o Fera are you plannign to be Hitler?? :P

Star Inkbright said...

@Fera: OMG
REALLY???????

(Sorry, it's just I had a debate about free speech and we all kind of assumed that no one really went around shouting offensive things just because they could and OMG WE WERE ALL SO WRONG APPARENTLY.)

Inky Flame said...

(Leaders needn't be ruthless or cold

They need to be strong, dependable, willing to take on others pov...

Ad leaders need supporters
Supporters who like them)

Feraaaa32 said...

Sometimes, they do have to be ruthless and cold. Just look up the personality types...these characteristic are in there for a good leader. Leaders also need to be able to sacrifice anything at any given moment. Good leaders, that will achieve things, that is.

and no star, i have the common sense and the morals sufficient enough to not kill 6 million people....or commit mass genocide...and for nearly no good reason as well.

and yes you were wrong...i do shout offensive things when i feel like it. and not care...i got slapped and thrown at several times, but i don't care :P

Inky Flame said...

(Can't you achieve things without being ruthless?)

Feraaaa32 said...

You can. I am saying, that when it's necessary, you have to know how to be ruthless.

Inky Flame said...

(I don't think ruthlessness has good connotations)

Star Inkbright said...

Everyone's having a go at Jeremy Corbyn for saying he wouldn't set off a nuclear bomb.
Just saying.
According to the British public, leaders need to be the kind of people who could horribly murder a load of innocent civilians.

@Fera: I was joking. :P

Feraaaa32 said...

But sometimes it's necessary. You'll learn. OR you won't...*shrugs* all i know is, there are situations when to achieve something, you need to be that. Being nice all the time, and you'll fail over and over again. And there are some situations where failure is unacceptable.

Feraaaa32 said...

becuz the british public is not very bright. They don't even realize the consequences that nuclear war would have. OR a mass genocide.

But you won't be a good leader unless you can toss away you niceness sometimes. We're talking about being leader, not about being a human being ^_^

Inky Flame said...

(Tbh I'm in a mixed position about whether leaders are good or not)

Star Inkbright said...

@Fera: :P So you're smarter than the majority?
(Actually, it's not just the British public, it's politicians and then there was that army guy.)

@Chloe: -_- My friends can be total bitches, but they wouldn't do that to me.
Well Cat might ditch me for two hours to go off with Ethan.
Okay so my friends are total bitches but I accept that and can deal with it and if I can't I force myself to and screw my head up, but my point is, the issue is with them, not you.

I . . . can't join in much with the "what qualities should a leader have" conversation because I spend most of my life searching for people to follow. :P

Feraaaa32 said...

IF there are no leaders, most people will just sit on their asses, there is no organisation, and nothing will eventually progress.

Feraaaa32 said...

I would like to think that i am. I mean basically everyone i know thinks that i am smart...so I think i am. Not too smart. But pretty. and politicians are obviously twats.

Inky Flame said...

(Well as I said, I don't know what to think

People need guidance, I accept that

The judge in court presents the evidence and leads the case in the direction it needs to go

But on the other hand, leaders with power can get power hungry and corrupted
Which can have a detrimental effect on society )

Feraaaa32 said...

I am talking about leaders that let people have opinions. Dictators are bad. Leaders are good.

Feraaaa32 said...

Finding a good leader is hard though, which is where the world is generally failing at the moment imo.

Inky Flame said...

(... This is a stupid question

But what's the difference between a dictator and a leader?)

Star Inkbright said...

My dad says that all leaders are corrupt. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
He's told me that there was only one leader of a country who wasn't corrupt, and he quit and went home. :P
(I don't know who he was referring to; he told me, but I forgot.)

Star Inkbright said...

@Chloe: A leader can be a dictator.

Leaders are neitehr good nor bad. Good leaders are good and bad leaders are bad.

Feraaaa32 said...

heh, well...your dad is partially right imo....

umm, a dictator just tells people what to do, no opinions, no saying...they do whatever he tells them to...a dictator is essentially a leader...but a bad kind....a good leader will try to consider all wishes and everyone else in decisions.

Inky Flame said...

(Right ^.^

(Hi.

My day was spent spent asking my cheerful flying servant robot the type of relationship we're in. The robot replied that it's just following my orders. Not sure why there's even an option for that.

Also walked into a warzone. Some raiders ambushed me, I proceeded to run further into Boston to escape them, only to get trapped between buildings and get shot at. Ran further away, some ghouls crawled out and overwhelmed me, managed to kill them and keep going, only to start getting shot at from raiders on rooftops. Continued running the hell away, only to run into a super mutant patrol or checkpoint. One was throwing firebombs, one was shooting at me with a normal assault rifle, and one ran straight at me. I had nowhere to run so I hid myself in a Pulowski Nuclear Preservation Center, a phonebooth-sized tube that can lock me in safely.

And then I waited.

And once I was sure it was safe, I opened the door.

And a suicide super mutant was outside.

And he swung his club at me.

And we both exploded in nuclear hellfire.

10/10 would visit Boston again.)

What about XCOM 2? Anybody got any XCOM 2 hype? Because if not I've got more than enough to go around, should you want some.

Trip! My old esteemed friend!)

(It's weird, I didn't really care about it before launch, but now that it's out, I realise there is so much to do there, and it's so awesome!

Power armour customization/building is new. So is building and upgrading weapons and normal armour. You can build settlements. And they've revamped perks and skills. Conversations work smoother. And it all looks amazing.

Early plot, though :|

It's sad. No spoilers.)

Dugglyn Carzainia said...

Slightly bored but definetly fine! How have you been? How be's YOUS eyes??

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(Hello, Trip and John

@Trip I didn't get around to finishing the first one (or Xenonauts) but I'm sure in 5-10 years I'll get around to feeling the hype for XCOM 4. I just have an absurd backlog of games to play.)

Trip Castalan, Lord of The Hobbits, The Fourth Most Popular Folk/Parody Banana Thief In The Land said...

(Hello, how are you? It's been such a while.)

But no customisable backstory, Kas. That's the best thing about games by Bethesda, and they removed it.

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(OMG hello, Duggy!)

Dugglyn Carzainia said...

Hey Kas!! 'Ello Blake!

Feraaaa32 said...

come on k, you're not seriously sad now are you? :P

hi duggy, and hey trip!

Trip Castalan, Lord of The Hobbits, The Fourth Most Popular Folk/Parody Banana Thief In The Land said...

My eyes are actually at the bottom of the South China Sea, Dug. But that's okay, I replaced them with laser eyes.

Dugglyn Carzainia said...

@Kasidodal ahem. I do believe used an incorrect work above *cough*OMLInotOMG*cough*

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(@Dugg Best is subjective. I like the character we have now, it fits the universe well, and isn't like Geralt from the Witcher, which might need study into their background.

Plus, you know, there has to be an incentive to play the main plot. Not every background might care about the plot.)

Trip Castalan, Lord of The Hobbits, The Fourth Most Popular Folk/Parody Banana Thief In The Land said...

Vy hello, Fera.

Dugglyn Carzainia said...

@Trip oh dear!! Well, laser eyes are good!

Hey Fera!

Trip Castalan, Lord of The Hobbits, The Fourth Most Popular Folk/Parody Banana Thief In The Land said...

(I never really did. Still got my money's worth and then some. I don't think I've ever technically completed an Elder Scrolls or Fallout game.)

Feraaaa32 said...

how're you duggy?
