It's a proper book now.
Demon Road was a little over 121,000. I had wanted it to be 80,000, which is roughly the size of Dark Days. Obviously, that didn't happen. But I am DETERMINED that Desolation be of a more manageable size. It'll probably end up somewhere around the 100,000 mark.
Writing a book can be a struggle. It's just so happened that in the writing of this one, every time I started to flow, and write LOTS, I had to go off on tour or do festivals or get interrupted for a multitude of reasons. It's very hard to build up any kind of rhythm when your writing schedule is kinda messed up.
But I'm flowing now. I want to get this latest draft off to my editor on Monday, because on Tuesday I'm off on holiday to Disneyworld and Universal Studios.
For Halloween.
Ooooooh this is gonna be my kind of holiday. By day, we go to Magic Kingdom, and go on rides and visit Harry Potter world and just have good, nice lovely fun...
But at night...
Universal Studios over Halloween has the most terrifying horror experiences on offer, and I will be going and subjecting my girlfriend to the ordeal. I'm going to tweet about it. I'm going to take videos. You may see me scream.
But it shall be a manly scream. A WAR CRY.
And then I'll run away and leave Laura to face this guy on her own.

To be honest, it all depends on context. In the right context, STFU can be friendly and in a different context, "be quiet" can be offensive.
Tbh, I think "be quiet" is more offensive than "shut up" in most contexts because "be quiet" sounds all commanding whereas "shut up" is so informal that it often just sounds friendly or like people don't mean it.
Of course, "be quiet" is different to "Can you just be quiet a moment coz I'm on the phone." The former is, as previously mentioned, commanding, whereas the second one is justified and just asking for common courtesy.

I was at Debating Society last week, and we were debating about free speech. My side was arguing that it was an absolute, and the other side was arguing that it wasn't.
Someone on the other side said that free speech shouldn't be an absolute because what if someone decided to go out into the street and shout racist comments? they said that firstly, nobody wanted to hear that, and secondly, it couuld be a bad influence on the surrounding public.
Eddie on our side said that the vast majority of people wouldn't do that because the vast majority of people had common sense. (:P)
Rob on our side later, building on Eddie's point, said that if someone went into the street and shouted racist comments, most of the passing people would realise, at we'd done, that such a person had no common sense and therefore they would realise they were a idiot and not value their opinions and as such that person's opinions would have no effect on them.
He then went on to detail his argument using the case study of his friend Kieran, saying that his friend Kieran always said unpleasant things to him beacuse beacuse he realised that Kieran was an idiot without common sense, he didn't value his opinions and thus Kieran saying his views didn't matter to him.
Rob's argument sounds very sensible in theory, but what Rob really doesn't understand is that tehre are people like me in the world. I am sooooo malleable. If someone tells me something enough, then I'll believe them even if the evidence of my own eyes contradicts them. Have I told you abotu when Cat and Lizzie acted like Darcie didn't exist and like they'd never heard of it, and I started really freaking out beacuse I thought Darcie didn't exist and that I was going mad, despite the fact that I'd seen her pretty much every week for years?
I'm fairly sure that if someone insisted that the sky was green, then eventually I'd start saying the sky was green or admit that the sky might be green, despite the fact I can clearly see it's blue.

if someone says somethign to me enough, then no matter when I believe them or not, I will be receptive to that information and my brain will start to adapt to accomodate it.
It makes no sense, but that's just the way my brain works. And Rob would never ever consider that, because his brain is obviously more logical and so, to him, why people shouting racist comments would be an issue might never occur to him, beacuse he would be expecting every else to have logical brains and to just be able to deal with it.
My point is - you don't know how otehr people's brains work. Maybe it seems easy for you to just get over a certain point, and maybe it seems logical, and maybe you can't see why it's an issue. However, maybe otehr people's brains are structured so that certain issues are much harder for them to deal with or get over.
