Forgotten Trail Winner

In June, I ran a competition to win the chance to appear as a character in a video game called Forgotten Trail. This is a game that, basically, teaches you maths while you have fun completing quests and solving puzzles, and the whole thing is steeped in Native American culture. The company that makes these games is run by Dr AnnMaria De Mars, who some of you will know as Ronda Rousey's mom.

I said the winner would be announced at the end of July but, because the entries kept coming, I kept it open another month. All in all, we had over 800 people entering — some more than once — and picking a winner was NOT easy.

But a winner I did pick. And here, to help me announce, is Ronda, her mom, her sister Maria, and lead artist Justin...

"And the winner is... Brinley Marrs!"

Congratulations Brinley! Your mom put your name forward and told me why she figured you should win, and I agreed! Hailey, your email has now been sent to AnnMaria and they will take it from there.

To everyone else who entered, commiserations — but if it's any consolation, please know that some of your entries made me grin...

Doctor Who was MEH

Like

Wtf have they done???

Setup = Good
Dalek Plan = Good
Davros = Awesome
Newest Master Incarnation (Missy?) = Good
Doctor = Alright
Conclusion = TERRIBLE

Like I can understand them going "Oh yeah they survive because of something we've never seen happen before and probably shouldn't happen assuming that people can idk move like super-speed in less than a second" I could understand THAT.

But then when it came to the conclusion of the episode and they decided "Okay let's make the Doctor do something that idk is it possible or not? Oh well he'll have some sunglasses now and that'll mean he can do it :D".

Like wtf

I think the Dalek plan was too good for the writers to handle :/

Currently all the episodes are "OKAY WE DON'T KNOW WHETHER THE DOCTOR IS GOOD OR NOT AND PEOPLE DONT KNOW THAT EITHER SO LETS PUT HIM IN SITUATIONS WHERE HE HAS TO CHOOSE BETWEEN GOOD AND BAD".

Basically has been the same thing for a while now. :/

Like

Idk

I thought that episode was going to be really cool.

I knew Missy and Clara would survive.

But I thought they'd use the vortex manipulator not use the dalek shots to somehow power the vortex manipulator or... something? Surely the vortex manipulator isn't dalek made though? I thought the android thing only worked because they worked on the same power? :/

Okay so this is what I'd have done if I would have designed the episode.

Clara and Missy survive.

Dalek plan stays the same basically.

Get rid of the whole sewer thing because tbh it's just a sewer full of sludge. I'd have totally got Clara locked into a Dalek though and would have had Missy disable the Dalek with idk a laser screwdriver or something like the Master used to have?

Then I'd have had Missy save the Doctor like she did but before any regenerative energy went into the Daleks. The Daleks would have all tried to kill them but Clara would have defended them in her Dalek suit and they'd try to make a getaway (maybe they'd have lost the Vortex Manipulator somewhere) and when they GOT to the Vortex Manipulator they realised Clara's mind had been idk damaged by being connected to the Dalek and they'd have to leave her on Skaro or maybe they'd use the Vortex Manipulator which'd have left her in the asylum of the Daleks in the 1st (?) episode where she appeared?
When Missy and Doctor escaped from Skaro with the Vortex Manipulator they could've gone and tried to fix the TARDIS another way and would have had episodes about trying to... idk find it or rebuild it or something? TARDIS gives Doctor a new sonic screwdriver and then more episodes going on about how to save Clara.

I can REALLY easily tell you what my favourite Doctor Who episode(s) are.

Army of Ghosts/Doomsday (the two together) the one with the Cybermen and the Daleks? I LOVED that episode SO much and I have it on DVD and I watch it like a lot. It was so great.
You had the Daleks and Cybermen meeting which was a great moment because they're like the two main alien races who battle the Doctor
Then you had the people from the parallel universe come in and that was good too.
And there was lots of emotion and lots of Daleks which is always good.

Matt Smith's Doctor basically went downhill from David Tennant's because of the writing of it. Most of the plot twists were... predictable? And oh gosh the amount of story arcs which went NOWHERE.
That Bad Wolf story arc with Christopher Ecclestone was also good. I loved how you could see it everywhere and I thought it was so great when you finally learned what it was.

And then Peter Capaldi's Doctor... even worse writing. Same situations happen all the time just because the writers haven't decided who the Doctor is yet (no wonder when he contradicts himself like 200x in every episode). The writing just says things will happen because we want it to happen and screw logic.

And I think there're some reasons for this.

I think one of the MAIN reasons is the merchandise

... Like when the Daleks became multi-coloured.
There was literally no reason at all for that.
The gold Daleks were FANTASTIC. They looked GREAT. And then there was Dalek Sec (the black one) who was y'know important so he was given special colours.
... And then they made the Daleks pretty colours.
And I think that's probably just so they could sell more Dalek merchandise. :/

And the second reason I think is because of America. (No offense America XD)
Because I think the show is/was getting popular in the USA they decided to "Americanise" it. Cowboy hats and gunfights basically defined Matt Smith's term as the Doctor. :P And how many episodes were actually SET in America?
There was... the whole story arc with the spaceman.
There was the "Town called Mercy"
There was "Angels take Manhattan".
And probably a lot more. Soooo many more than there used to be. And I think that's because they thought Americans would like it more. :/
And I think the writing is more-basic and a lot worse than it used to be because they want it to appeal to more people (er basically screwing up lore and messing up the balance between science and fiction in the science fiction) because idk maybe the plots are too complicated for some people?

... And am I the only one who has realised all the female characters are pretty much identical? Like... They all seem to be flirty and overconfident at the minute? It's kind of getting boring?

Star Inkbright said...

I think Dalek Sec was so damn cool. So were the other Cult of Skaro XD
But er Dalek Sec became a human-Dalek so he got screwed up then died.
Two others died.
And Dalek Caan went into the Time War to rescue Davros and lost its mind whilst there.
So yeah er the Cult of Skaro didn't work out XD

I was actually really happy when they killed off Danny Pink.

Because Doctor Who was turning into "the Clara and Danny Show".

Just as Matt Smith's Doctor Who was turning into the Amy and Rory show. XD Was happy when they were gone too. :)

Personally what I'd do to make the show better - Get rid of Clara. That's literally the main thing I'd do XD I'd also basically fire everyone who had even a tiny part to do in the writing and have new writers.

I'd tell the writers to put more emphasis on creating a GOOD companion for the Doctor and a good plot.

I'd have them answer questions that've been there throughout all of the different series like whether Jack Harkness is the Face of Boe and what happened to the Doctor's Daughter after she flew away.

Mary Contrary said...

@. : Oh. :/ Is it something you want to talk about or... Nah? :/

@dw conversation: 100% for Jack Harkness. Has he been around since David Tennant's doctor? :(

I think... Imo, a good companion would just be a new personality?

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

Hi.

@Dragona Jack Harkness is the Face of Boa. It's confirmed. (Started with the ninth doctor)

Moffat went ahead and just tried to move on from what came before. Like the Doctor's Daughter.

Btw, what was up with the whole "mercy" thing? It's not the first time a Dalek's begged for mercy...

+100000 points for Missy yelling "Wee!!!" while covering herself from an explosion.

Feraaaa32 said...

fuck no. I thought about it enough. thanks for the offer though.

Dragona Pine said...

I actually thought Martha was alright. Liked Mickey too. :)

Okay. A companion shouldn't be whiney and they shouldn't steal the show. They shouldn't be flirty and overconfident (basically for the sake of a change), and I mean... Why not have a female doctor and a male companion for once?
Anyway yeah. They need something interesting about them, but not something which takes centre stage for a series then gets completely forgotten. *coughs* Amy. *coughs* Clara *coughs*. Why not make them an alien??? Or a criminal? Or an alien criminal? Idk just a combination which isn't "flirty overconfident female". And definitely nothing like Amy "melodrama" Pond.

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

@Taia I'm annoyed that Clara's magical ability of being a Vuctorian teacher as well as a Dalek got resolved so quickly during the last season. It's all becoming meh lately.

I mean... come on, Moffat's first season seemed better.

Oh, well... let's see where it goes.

Dragona Pine said...

I didn't think it was ever properly confirmed Kas. Jack said he had the nickname but I think that was it???

No it isn't at all. A Dalek (stupidly) asked River Song for mercy once... Which was stupid. It was a "yay look how badass river song is" moment and screw the "hate filled alien mutant soldiers in indestructible armour" which is what Daleks are.

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

@Dragona *ships Tenth/Rose with a passion*

*ships literally nobody else*

*is sure that the series needs to try harder*

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

@Dragona It was weak at the time, so weak + vulnerable = mercy?

@Dragona There's nobody else it could be except for Jack?

Dragona Pine said...

Kas yeah but they were together a long time what little there was in terms of idk relationship felt natural not forced like every recent dw relationship XD

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

*nobody else from DW

Mary Contrary said...

... In the sense that, when they brought in Donna, everyone was kind of there watching like "Really..? Catherine Tate?" and not really being sure what to make of it. But they did it anyway and it was a bit different from some of the other companions and, for a lot of people, it worked? Idk. I think sometimes changing things is a good way to go. *nods* ?

Hey, Kas! *hugs* :)

@.: *nods* Whatever it is, then, I hope it turns out alright. *hugs* :/

Feraaaa32 said...

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

*hugs Taia-Bear back*

Aquila Felis said...

Aaah, the joys of not knowing the actors, so you can't have an opinion before seeing them...

Dragona Pine said...

It was a bloody Dalek XD Daleks don't ask for mercy. Other things ask mercy from Daleks. Literally it was just for a moment with River Song. Has any proper Dalek which has been going to die ever asked for mercy apart from that? Er... No.

It doesn't have to actually be someone? :P

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

Also... remember Midnight? Tenth Doctor stuck on a hovercraft on the moon? Or Voyage of the Damned? (Space Titanic.) Or even Martha's important episodes? Or Tenth Doctor's Master encounters?

We can't have that anymore. It's like the whole series has taken a turn. It's just so different.

Aquila Felis said...

... Dragona, could it be that your complaint is really nothing but "But I like Daleks way better than River, so they should be cooler at any time!"? 0o

Dragona Pine said...

Yeah they need change... Not people who fit exactly the same character model XD I actually quite like Missy as a companion. But my main problem is "oh yeah you killed some people and turned the dead into cybermen but all is forgiven :D". And again the flirty/overconfident personality template which has just been stamped on to a Time Lord.

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

Well, didn't Boa refer to the Tenth Doctor as an old friend? And I remember the end of some episode where they left the TARDIS, Jack ran off, and the companion (Rose) gave the Doctor a look that implied they knew he was the Face of Boa, even if Jack didn't.

Dragona Pine said...

No, Aquila. I'm saying that weak or not a Dalek wouldn't have asked for mercy and the only reason why it did was for the script not the lore. :P It basically broke what a Dalek is for the sake of making River Song look cool. :P

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

@Dragona all is not forgiven. But this is the character and plot they've chosen to work with.

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

@Dragona The Dalek could be partially rebuilt. I mean, it didn't receive enough power, maybe other things were off too. Like DNA.

Aquila Felis said...

Plus it's smart to first seem weak and then attack them when they feel safe.

Dragona Pine said...

Oh come on she helped out once and now they're off travelling. She lied about Clara being dead and generally has been putting her in danger all this time and no one gives a crap a few minutes after its happened. :P Why not just dump her in the middle of nowhere?

Feraaaa32 said...

is anyone here?

Mary Contrary said...

@Kas: Don't think I saw those episodes, but I totally get what you mean, yeah. -.-

Nnnggghhhhhhh Rose/Ten is so painful though :(

"Why not have a female doctor and a male companion for once?" YES THIS IS MY JAM. THIS IS THE THING THAT I AM WAITING FOR.
I think... I think flirty and overconfident are both totally valid character traits and totally, use them, but a) they don't both have to go together and b) like, don't just chuck them onto everybody because, um, why would you? :/
I also really like the alien idea. But like, imagine a non-humanoid alien, like... When you get cat-people but instead of being cat people they're juSt like cATS. JuSt cats. Idk that'd be so cool. Why doesn't the TARDIS translation system work with their language? This is important to me. :P

Dragona Pine said...

Eh maybe but with no evidence to say otherwise you just kind of assume it's a normal Dalek. :P

No Aquila it was just a damaged Dalek. :P

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

It could even be a glitch in the voice system.

I am the only Dalek and need to survive to make my race survive and exterminate you all = mercy at this moment. Just a faulty translator.

Aquila Felis said...

... why not have a not English Doctor for once? While we're at it..
... or at least a companion from somewhere else...

Aquila Felis said...

Oh, right, make that English British. =P

Dragona Pine said...

Raisin there were also them cactus people who seemed cool XD Oh gosh an Adipose companion. :P *would pay to see that*

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

@Dragona she didn't travel anywhere, though. She took Clara to the Doctor, they all got taken to Skaro, and at the end of today's episode, they practically dumped her there.

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

@Johanna Isn't the current doctor Scottish?

Dragona Pine said...

Kas they'll start travelling. :P

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

@Draggie Really? :S This is stupid. Unless they start looking for Gallifrey. Two Time Lords looking for Gallifrey sounds like a good episode. Or two. No more.

There's plenty of space for things to get better. ^^

@dw stuff: ... Daleks are living beings, though, aren't they? They've got weird sort of tentacle goo inside their armour, right? So... Maybe the Mercy Dalek asked for mercy because survival instinct or personality difference? Like, who says that's not possible?

Sorry, I need to go. :/
Maybe get some sleep, if you can?
Goodnight! ^^

It's been said a few times that Daleks only know hate. So if they have no fear why would they ask for mercy? :P

Within a few weeks my sister has dropped her phone down the toilet, stood on her phone and broken the screen and put her earphones in the wash. I think this is great. XD

Mary Contrary said...

Hey Dragona!

Mmh, but the people who say that about Daleks hate Daleks, and so would probably prefer to think that? Doesn't necessarily make it true. :) ^^

Oh dear :P

*is so tired of explaining my opinion on authoring*

*when writing in real life, you have to obey the rules of real life* *because otehrwise it's not real life*
*when writing in a fantasy enviroment, you write a new world* *and more to the point, you write a new world with new rules* *you then have to stick to your new rules* *otehrwise the story just isn't plausible adn then it's rubbish*
*"oh, yes, any trouble we get in we can just wave our magic ones and get out of it because MAGIC". No. If there isn't a challenge, it isn't plausible, and you set challenges by setting rules. The rules don't even have to be explicitly laid out; there just needs to be limitations in place to ensure that the characters cannot instantly achieve everything. For example, in Harry Potter, we don't know much about how magic works or anything. But we do know that you can't turn invisible without an invisibility cloak - or at least, we know that Harry can't. Therefore, whenever Harry wants to turn invisible, he has to deal with the invisibilty cloak. Even if a spell for invisibility existed, he couldn't just magically know this because such a thing would be unrealistic to the rules of his world (ie, we assume that such a spell would be very high-level and Harry couldn't just magically know how to perfom a high-level spell instantly). Contradicting the rules you have set for your world makes it implausible, and that will irritate your reader and make them more likely to, for want of a better word, diss your work. For example, everyone yesterday was dissing recent Doctor Who episodes due to their contradicting of the rules set; due to their implausibility. Impluaibility can also be described with the word 'plotholes', if that makes it any clearer to you.
Secondly, if Harry could just somehow know how to do any magic spell whenever needed with no limitations on what he could achieve with magic . . . ready Harry Potter would be very boring. There would be no challenge. No complex emotions. Just safety. And when all the characters go along being safe and happy the whole time . . . it's not much of a story. Which means that it won't be much fun to read - and I can't imagine it'd be much fun to write either.

You can, in theory, just make your characters do whatever the fuck you want because they're your characters. But that will most likely make it less fun for you and definitely make it less fun for your reader.

You need to set limitations, boundaries. You need to stick to those limitations - if you can find a way around them, you need to haev nough justification that the reader thinks it sounds like a plausible excuse.

Of course, you could enjoy writing with no limitations and you could also write for no reader. However, if you share your writing in a public place, people are goign to read it, and that opens you up for comments on it.

If you never share your writing with anyone, don't worry about it. :)

Star Inkbright said...

@Chloe: -_- If I lived with you, I'd enjoy your prescence and not want you to go leave.

Well . . . I prefer being alone quite a bit, and if I spend too mcuh time surrounded by people I want them to leave regardless of how much I like them. But either way, I like you. :)

Inky Flame said...

(Thanks star *huggles*

But it's not normal for a parent to say that, is it?

It's a lot of expressed emotion )

Star Inkbright said...

@Chloe: Not to my knowledge, no.

Star Inkbright said...

@Chloe: *nods* :( :( Don't blame you.

Inky Flame said...

(I just... Give up
It's like... She treats me differently than My siblings ... If I'm on the computer, and my brother on the Xbox or watching TV then he decided to go on the computer, I refuse and he goes to tell mum and then she makes me
Bearing in mind I don't use the Xbox or hardly watch TV...

She definitely treats them differently, and it always ends up as 'taking the piss out of chloe'

She always tries to bring the worst out in me too...

Like, you know this girl who made my life hell for years?
She passed her driving test recently and mum goes 'she did that just to one up you' and I'm like.. It doesn't bother me

And last night on my Facebook, my uncle posted a picture of him and his wife and dog (Charlie) watching the rugby
Mum tried to get me to write that the dog looked like the only sober one
And the only reason she saw the photo is because she went on my Facebook because my uncle blocked her! I actually get on with my uncle ad I won't say anything to upset our relationship, whether my mm likes it or not!

*end of rant*)
