Oh, Woe Is Me

It's not easy writing a book.

I mean, it's easier than mining coal. It's easier than most factory work. It's probably easier than a lot of office jobs as well.

But STARTING to write a book... those first few inches you have to push that boulder till it hits the edge and starts to roll downhill... THAT'S the hard part.

Not as hard as teaching, granted. Or working on a farm. Or being a doctor or a nurse or a cop or a fireman. I doubt it's as hard as construction, either, or carpentry, or plumbing, or engineering.

But STILL...

You aren't a stupid child Claire! We wanted to talk to you because we aren't sure it's the best thing for you, we're trying to be good parents! If you'd rather we had died in that crash as opposed to your car being damaged then please, feel free to shoot us. We're trying to look out for you Claire! You think we want you to get stuck in jail? To get killed! We don't!

Star Inkbright said...

Mmh. I suppose I'm okay at communicating. However, I don't like communicating with people in a "you don't care you never communciate me" "omg now I need to communicate with you to show I care" context. Like - it makes you seem like you're only communicatiing to try and look like you care, and furthermore, if you don't communicate under your own volition, then it can end up feeling rather unnatural and forced . . . and like. I only like to communicate with people if I would do it anyway, without the enviroment pressuring me into it, otehrwise it doesn't feel genuine. And if I would genuinely communicate anyway but it still seeems like I'm doing it due to being pressured, it feels feels a bit eh.

Idk. I probably need to actually think this out. Normally these decisions happen in my head, and so, as will be expected for those who know how badly I think in my head, they don't seem nealry as great on paper. Or, y'know, on screen. Whatever.

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

(Watching a fifty year old Abraham Lincoln using an axe to slay vampires on the top of a speeding train so said train can deliver silver can help him win the battle of Gettysburg against a vampire army is... implausible at best.)

Parasite: *a knife forms in her hand* Now I do.

Bethany: I don't care. I'm coming with you.

Doctor: *she nods, following the other Doctor*

Inky Flame said...

(I'm off to bed now
Nos da)

Star Inkbright said...

(@Sophia: That sounds similar to something that happened in The Alloy of Law.

Except it was a forty-two-year-old man and it wasn't Abraham Lincoln and it was an immortal criminal as opposed to vampires and it was guns and fistfighting instead of an axe and there wasn't anythign to do with silver, although silver had been robbed earlier in the book along with jewellery, but alumunium was more the thing and at the time Miles just wanted to kill Wax and the scene did prelude a battle but it wasn't battle with a fancy name and there were a group of criminals with aluminium guns as opposed to a vampire army (but considering Wax and Wayne and Marasi are only two and a half people (well, if you count Wax and Wayne as two people. Really Wayne is probably worth seven and Wax is worth about sixteen), the criminals were pretty much an army, especially since ), but there was a speeding train . . .

. . .

Alright that link may have been tenuous, but as a staunch Brandon Sanderson obsessor, I shall prevail. *nods*)

Morgan: *gratefully* Thank you.
But give me a moment first.
*carefully pulls various tubes out of himself, then rolls off the bed, wincing*

Star Inkbright said...

omg though.
I mean, I'm not normally one for action scenes, but those action scenes in The Alloy of Law were beautiful.
. . .
ahem.)

Mary Contrary said...

@Star: *laughs* :P

And- Yeah. THat makes sense.
BUt, then... What if you don't do it of your own volition and then you just... don't do it?
And then you don't get to say that you do care? I don't know.

It's like...
You know when people do something, and people are like, 'oh, they're just after attention'
And it's like, OK, but.. they wouldn't be looking for attention if they didn't need it. Why not give it to them?
And just because you didn't do it without a direct stimulus, and even if it feels less natural/more forced... Does that mean you still shouldn't?
I don't know. I think about this a lot and I never know the answer.

@Sophia: XD
Alternative universes, though. :P ^^

(That has to be the worst movie I have ever seen. It teaches us that: 1. It is entirely possible to jump from horse to horse during a horse stampede whilst fighting a vampire simultaneously and not fall off, get trampled, get eaten alive or otherwise injured. 2. That racism is bad, but being racist to vampires is acceptable. You could argue that "the vampires are bad", but one of the main characters disproves that. 3. A fifty year old man can pick up a firearm/axe hybrid after not touching it for twenty five years and still use it to kill vampires like he was a twenty year old again. 3. Vampires who seem to be able not to harm or kill each other are able to do so when the plot deems it necessary. 4. Abraham Lincoln would put his life at risk defending a decoy train from vampires when it is actually just full of rocks rather than silver. 5. Getting drunk means you are either going to kiss or kill someone. 6. You can watch someone throw a vampire upwards into the air with such force that they were able to break a wall of a wooden building and then be surprised when they turn out to be a vampire. 7. Vampire bites kill some and turn others, seemingly depending on how good the soul is. 8. Everyone who fought for the South were vampires. 9. Lincoln's mother and son were both killed by vampires.)

If someone wanted attention simply because they were attention seekers, I would not give them my attention. I would see no reason why I should have to give them my attention, when a clearly better option would be to attempt to target their need for attention rather than feeding it.)

Feraaaa32 said...

because i know you are a good person inside. you just have to realize.

Mary Contrary said...

Sorry. Had to go resolve some existential crises.

@Star: *nods* Maybe.

But
If you do want to say 'I care', then couldn't one argue that, the honest thing is to say it, regardless of what triggered you to do it?
I get that, it might look like you want to LOOK like you care but...
Unless you really did care, why would you want it to seem that way?
Because just like there could be two reasons for saying it (I care; I want to look like I care), there could be two reasons for not saying it (I care; I don't).

And I think that's kind of where I get stuck. Because ideally, I want the common ground of 'I care': but you can't half-send an email. It seems to be quantised, and the quantum's either too much or too little.

I don't know, that's just the step I can't get around, personally. ^^

@Sophia: *nods*
BUt what if you're not insincere.
I don't...

You wouldn't want somebody to think you cared about them, unless you actually cared about them.
And so you wouldn't want to look, to them, like you cared, unless you did care.
(Unless you had some ulterior motives, but I'm going to sidestep that conspiracy because that's not what I'm talking about here.)

My view on attention-seeking is kind of similar in that respect.
If somebody is looking for attention - it's probably because they don't have any.
If you didn't feel lonely or ignored or unwanted - if you didn't need moral/emotional support, then you wouldn't seek it.
If you didn't need a hug, you wouldn't ask for one.

If you feel like nobody is there for you and at that point in time you need to know that they are
So you ask and you get 'they're just attention-seeking'
That's hardly going to help your situation? :S

I find it difficult to look at another's emotional requirement as unnecessary or too much, just because it doesn't comply with my own personal requirements.
If somebody was low in self-esteem and constantly needed reminding that people did like them: how else would you tackle that problem, without telling them that you do?

If somebody wants attention because they want to be noticed, because they feel unnoticed
Whose place is it to tell them that feeling is unwarranted?

Why is attention not a valid requirement?

Sorry this is so long and repeating-myself, but, I dunno, I feel differently. ^^

In principle, at least. In practise, it can be damned hard for me to conjure up sympathy for people, particularly when they're just being irritating, y'know? I mean, when I pay attention to what I'm doing, I try, but like . . . I don't put enough effort into helping people, either way.

But like . . . if you want to email someone but the only reason you're doing it is because someone reminded you "if you cared, you would email," and then you're emailing to show you care, whether that's because you actually care or because you just want to look like you care -
it can feel really false to pretend you're emailing of your own accord instead of being prompted, and I tend to wish to avoid feeling false when communicating with people, ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY if I'm trying to prove to them that I care.

keiron: It's still helping. only by telling the harsh facts. when somebody is too lost to listen to nice words, the only option left is to make them realize.

Star Inkbright said...

@Keiron: It just upsets me when my favourite bands rip off Metallica. -_- Like Avenged Sevenfold ripped Metallica off to death. I'm naive. I like to believe in people.

(Cpm: yup ! :D I crawled out of the black hole it was just my shadow realm... it ripped Ghetremus from me and now all I have is necromancy!

thanks for thinking I said it better :P It was still very meaningful and true... *hugs ?*)

(sorry for the mistakes btw like no sleep and tired doesn't work well on keyboard. :P and yeh I know Fera it can make sense ... II just choose to try never to use that around someone who is feeling sensitive in any way... as it can cause them to reflect on their actions more.)

Star Inkbright said...

Guysssss you should both go to sleep. :P

Mary Contrary said...

@Star: ?
All artists rip off other artists.
But the artists who come up with new things are the ones who rip off a tonne of different artists at once.
And sometimes, you think you've got something of your own, but actually, you heard it somewhere else first. It might not be deliberate.
I can think of at least two songs off the top of my head that are pretty much Cat Stevens' 'Father and Son', but with different words.
Granted, I think he sued one of them, but...Idk. Personally, I like all three songs, and I think all three bring something quite different to the same outline.
Plus you can draw lyrical links between all three, which is interesting.

Not saying it's good to steal from other people but--

Successful band like Metallica? I don't think it's going to do them much harm?

Idk. I seem to be tired and a little apathetic, here. o0

She wanted to be a scientist.

Science was her favourite subject, by far.

And her best.

All A's.

She smiled to herself.

She could definitely see herself working in the science field.

Curing deseases...

Or working in forensics...

that

That would be cool.

A life of lab work and theory writing and testing....

She could do that.

She wanted to do that.

God, did she want to do that....

Feraaaa32 said...

a girl: so why didn't she do that? :)

Avenged Sevenfold /ripped off/ Metallica.
Like /hell/ they ripped them off.
:P
Metallica - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_4OfD-wmGs

That is not being cool. That is being too lazy to make your own music.

But yeah. When you copy from one person, it's cheating. When you copy from lots of people, it's research. :P

(OSRRY I THINK ITS A LONG COMMENT AGAIN)

@Star: *nods*
*kind of*
*I'm having trouble moving viewpoint and I don't know why*

But like
I didn't say to pretend you're emailing of your own accord?
I don't think that's what I meant.

What I don't understand, I think, is the significant difference between:

I care about this person => I tell them
And
This person wants to hear that somebody cares => I care about this person => I tell them

Because in either case 'I care about this person' is a fact, and in neither case is the extent of that care any greater

And It's probably the way my own social cognitions go, but for me, it's really hard to just up and say 'HEY BRO I CARE ABOUT YOU', because what if I'm just being irritating and getting in the way and causing a bother, and what if they don't even like me and I'm the last thing they want to hear, etc.
If I know somebody thinks people don't care, then it's less of a leap to state the same fact
Idk
... Is that just self-interest on my part, or? I don't know.

Star Inkbright said...

@Keiron: XD

@Taia: Mmh, you didn't say it. I did, in an attempt to explain situations when I wouldn't email people to tell people I care about them.

No, it's not really that.
I'm not really sure how much sense my viewpoint makes, now, though, so I'm not sure in the sense of explaining it further . . .
It made sense a moment ago. -_-

Yeah . . . I'm often scared to randomly tell people things like that. :/ When compliments were more the societal norm for me, it was a lot easier, but now it's become pretty hard.

Star Inkbright said...

@Taia: :P Sorry.

Mary Contrary said...

@Star: *nods* I can see where you're coming from, with the songs
Although, not as similar as I expected, admittedly.
One of the comments on the A7X video says that it's supposed to be a tribute to the Metallica song.
Not sure if that's true, but.. ^^

Anonymous said...

(I prefer... avenged sevenfold... tbh more of their songs anyway... I dunno I like metallica too and can see where you are coming from but still)

Star Inkbright said...

:) Goodnight, Keiron.

@Taia: :P No, do. It's good for me. :)

@Taia: Mmh. The whole album was meant to be a tribute to old-school metal and done in the style of old metal bands like Metallica. But I think there's a difference between 'in the style of' and 'pratically copying and individual song.'
Metallica have quite a bit of variety, and Sad But True is pretty distinctive. -_-

Star Inkbright said...

@Keiron: I prefer Avenged Sevenfold too, in general, although I can like both of them, but the fact is, Metallica's song came out years (possibly decades) beforehand, so it's not like they ripped off Avenged Sevenfold. XD

(Link looks a bit odd(mobile?), hopefully it works?)
^^ A recording of Coldplay - 'Yellow' and Pavement - 'Here' played over one another

It used to really annoy me because I'd be listening to Pavement, or it'd be in my head, or I'd be playing guitar, and all of a sudden, in my head it goes 'and it was all yellow'
Which is so frustrating and ardhhdjg

But, I don't believe that Coldplay stole it from Pavement, anyway.

*shrugs*

Obviously you don't have to listen, but, I dunno. It came to mind. :P

*huggles Keiron*

*also hugs Star*

... I managed to type 'stugs har'. Autocorrect thought I was trying to drug a hat, apparently. :P

Nonecrases = no one cares !
Well, hey, I care, so, if I say so, it's becAuse that's the fact. :)

@Star: Oh, fair enough. I can see your point there. :)
Um. At least they are kind of crediting Metallica for it? :P

*hugs Fera*

(Hello.

Taia - I may just be being stubborn, but nevertheless.)

Liliana: I know they say love is blind, I suppose it has to be deaf too.

Parasite: You are welcome. *she takes the tongue, biting it* You seem oddly calm to be in a realm full of demons, and then me on top of that.

Bethany: I'm not letting you go alone. That's a promise.

Ember: *she places her hand on his shoulder, before they vanish in a flash of fire, reappearing in Austria* Please, speak. Who are you? What are your powers? Why are you here?

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

Onwa: Of course.

James: I see little threat.
*shrugs, cutting himself some cheek*

*sighs*

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

Liliana: Is deaf a type of blindness?

Parasite: Only because I have removed the threat.

Bethany: I either come with you in the vault, or sit outside it in the cold.

Was woken up at nine. Went out at ten. Had seven hours sleep, so not too bad, but I had four the night before so eh.)

Morgan: *sighs, trying to think past the fuzzing in his head*
I don't know how I got here. I don't remember. However, there's probably a reason, so the next thing on my list is to find our what it is.
As for powers - when I'm not malfunctioning, I can do quite a few things. Move faster, shapeshift, levitate, become available as a substitute oven. Right now, I can probably only manage the lesser things, and if I do too many of them I may be offered the bonus of a non-refundable ticket back to that hospital. Otherwise I'd give you a demonstration.

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

(Hello.

*she cuddles Jaimie back*)

Liliana: Ear blindness.

Parasite: *she finishes eating the last of the tongue*

Bethany: I always give in... I'm not giving in this time. I mean it... I'll wait outside if you want time alone, but I'm coming with you.

Ember: If you would like someone to accompany you, I am willing to join you. I have already pissed off my father a little and I waited for you at the hospital. I see no reason why I wouldn't see it to a conclusion.

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

(The only adverts that seem to be on television at the moment are various forms of insurance adverts, adverts for lawyers talking about PPI and medical negligence, and adverts about borrowing money.)

Star Inkbright said...

(@Sophia: Hmm.
Rather troubling.)

Morgan: *pauses, alloeing gis thoughts to be thought and then evaluated the necessaey number of times before being spoken* You can if you want, but it's entirely your choice. I'd be grateful for your help if you did.

Inky Flame said...

(Why is the weather so horrible? -_-)

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

(Indeed, given that insurance is largely a con, PPI lawyers are definitely a con, medical negligence lawyers are cons who take advantage of the government cutting NHS funding and borrowing money can cripple your finances and give you a massive amount of debt.)

Ember: Sure, I'll tag along.

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

(Hello, Chloe.)

I also watched most haunted)

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

(I also watched Most Haunted, despite it being ridiculous. I have also watched Top Gear, because it is... bearable. I am currently watching Dinner Date, despite it being of no interest to me. Then I may watch Judge Rinder, because it is vaguely interesting. The Jeremy Kyle Show is far too loud for me. Everyone is essentially identical - well, there are two distinct groups. There are the skinny, pale drug addicts, and the overweight women who shout at each other. I cannot stand that programme. I would rather spend ten hours in Meadowhall - which would not be ideal when I do not like crowds - than watch an hour of the Jeremy Kyle Show.)

Inky Flame said...

(I see
^.^ I know most haunted is a load of bollocks but I've watched it since I was little)

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

(If they wanted to make a believable ghost-centred programme, they should not credit the script writer. The programme is only several people walking around in the dark, making a big deal out of nothing and taking advantage of the cameras having a small field of view to fake "paranormal activity" with a medium who has been proven to be false time after time. I am aware it is for "entertainment purposes only", but they do not even have the same ability to fake events that the Ghost Adventures team has, or the ability to create terrible generated images like the Haunted Collector does. I wonder whether they are even trying sometimes.)

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

Onwa: Hmm.. ear blindness..in a way that works.

James: *starts eating the cheek*
Hmm.. not too bad in flavour.
