See, the Stormlight Archive protrayed it as such. You create the illusion of authoritu, and people react to it. Then again, it was going along with the theme of everything being lies. INsults are a mixture of lies and truth, lots of idioms are lies, humans believe lies and live lies. It was also going along witht he theme of . . . creating literal illusions, and like . . . authority is just acting. You act like you have authority (like, you act, which is creating an illusion), and people respond to it. It's an illusion.
I think if someone came out to me, I would probably portay my internal feelings and thoughts by look very interested and go "Oh, that's cool." (Possibly "Oh, that's so cool." POssibly, "Oh, I've always wanted to be bi." Which I have.)
Heh. I'm all planned out now. >:D *waits for someone to come out to me :P*
(You do, in effect, give yourself authority. But that does not make it any less real. It does rely on the way people react to said authority to determine whether you have it or not - but that is the point. The fact that people do act shows that you do have authority. If you had no authority - they wouldn't act. It is given to you by the people that you wish to have authority over, but that doesn't make it any less real.)
((I and your other friends are here for you, Noelle, to try to make it easier if we can, and support you when we can't. Please remember you are loved.))
*shrugs* Actually, I'm still not sure how I feel about having this kind of freedom... I guess it's nice- I feel a lot better in my own body, and having control of myself, and all that, but at the sametime, I know this is temporary. And when I go back, all the other names will hate me more, and see me as a bigger threat, because I had this once. *looks around at the environment, wrapping her arms around her waist as though she's cold* I don't know if it's worth it. An eternity of suffering, for a few moments of... *she looks at her hands* this. I mean, for someone like Alastair- he's strong. He can beat most of us any day, and even though even he's barely had any freedom, he has things to want to be free for, you know? I have... blue hair. *she shrugs, smiling faintly* I guess it doesn't matter, anyway. I'm getting way to philosophical here.
Friends are truly amazing people, and like my friend says, friends are the family you choose. And cupcakes are good for sharing with your friends...or eating theirs for them because you're such a nice person like that.
@Sophia: Illusions are real though, that's the thing. You take a lie and make it a reality by living in it. Also, I think people react to you if you show authority. Like teachers. Some teachers jut have no authority, and no matter how much they yell at the class, the class ignores them; whereas some teachers just have a PRESCENCE, and can just . . . make the class be silent. Each teacher has the same amount of power granted to them by their position as a teacher, but they all have different amounts of authority.
Yeah, though. The Stormlight Archive also had a character who went on a monolouge about how art is dependent on the audience, and I suppose illusions, particularly authority-ones, are art.
*Noelle gets on her small bike and drives away* *Incredibly far* *And once she things she's far enough, she relinquishes her vice and her rope, and she lets go*
Zanida: *gently* You know, I think if you guys want to be free even for a few moments, your will can help you. Alastair has Adra, John has Zafira, Niccolò had Aretha, if you hold onto the one thing that makes you want to be free, that may help you. I like your blue hair, I can turn blue.
(Teachers have no authority, Star. They physically do not have the ability to put any meaningful punishments in place. If they had the power to make people would so as they said - then that would be authority.)
I don't really have anything now, though... Hang on- I have to go. *runs after Noelle for a bit, shifting into a bird and flying when she gets too tired, and shifts back into herself once she stops* Hey...
Bethany: It wasn't public. I wouldn't want to do it in public... There are only three keys to the library. We were let in with one and the only other person there was at the other side.
(No, Star. They don't. If you get into trouble - what, exactly, can they do? They can give you a detention - which doesn't mean anything. The maximum thing they can do is kick you out and make you go to another school - again doing effectively nothing. If you want to disobey them - you can. That is not authority.)
@Sophia: That's why their authority is an illusion. They make us obey them with . . . their prescense. *shrugs* Doesn't get more illusional than that. :)
(They do not have any authority, Star. Authority is real - they simply do not have it. I can see why you would think it is an illusion - but they have no authority. They cannot make anyone obey them. But there are ways of doing exactly that - and that is authority.)

*she's in a sleeveless t-shirt and cargo pants, and also wearing chain mail- the mail is tucked into the cargo pants, but worn over her shirt* *shakes Tanya's hand* Hi, are you Tanya?
((Hi, Lavender. If you're sleepy, maybe you should sleep? Not that I don't like you here- just, you know. Sleep is probably good for you.))
*Aretha's voice is serious, but she keeps her tone respectful, and nonthreatening* Actually, I just came to talk to you. I hear you've declared yourself leader of Blogland.
Aretha: Aretha Tesla. I don't live in Blogland, and I haven't been here much lately, but pretty much all of my friends live here, and I like to think that I've been part of the community for a long time. I already know your name, but would you tell me about yourself, if you have a moment? I've heard a few things about you, and your intentions, but I don't think it would be fair to assume anything is true or false before I've spoken to you personally.
Aretha: Thank you. *sits down* Sorry- I have a tendency to rant a little too much. Let me know if I'm bothering you. Firstly- I just want to know who you are, because we haven't met, and I like people. And secondly, I'd like to know what your intentions are in declaring yourself Queen of Blogland, and what that title means to you.
*Slips in with a cloth, and picks Noelle's body up, wrapping her up* *Brings her to the graveyard, and places her in her feeble pine box* *Nails the box shut, and slides it roughly into the ground* *Covers the box up easily, but would undoubtedly crack the box beneath the ground, the weight too much*
Mostly by bossing them around with orders such as "Attack the enemy together!" and "Protect the children, oh god, protect the children- oh no..." but obviously I will fight alongside them.
I also intend to pass laws. I've only passed one, a law that bans murder. A teleporter, James, has broken said law... We can't find him, and we can't catch him...
*cries harder as Noelle's body is taken away* *she wants to tell them to stop- she wants to be able to heal her- but she can't* *not like this* *curls up tighter*
Yeah, slowly doing that now... *mumbles something about always getting confused between role play and authors* *keeps mumbling while going back to the last place in to comments she was at*
Not quite sure yet. I don't want to change things too much from how they are, but... some people may have to be k- imprisoned, and I need laws to make this clear.
I'm a vampire, Aretha. I've killed people before. For food, for fun, ,it doesn't matter. It's not about me or Tia any more. I'll be protecting Blogland.
Yes, well, he's the one at fault here, breaking the law and killing people. He is a criminal and is no longer considered a citizen, which does not grant him the right to live here.
You may not be that dangerous now--after all, you haven't killed me yet--but you have the potential, maybe not to destroy the world, but at least enough to make a major dent.
[Remains with his copy of Oedipus Rex, listening to a few neo-classical mixes on his turntable] [His foot taps gently, leading about the antics of a protagonist and his love affairs with his mother, deeply interested in the psychology of the subject] [Closes his book and retires for bed, undressing, and with the assistance of Mr. Hill, places his clothes away] [Mr. Finch lays under his duvet, quietly, and closes his eyes, drifting away].
*stops pacing when Tia hugs her* *hugs back with a sigh* I'm worried about my author... And because she's not planning to say what's going on in her head, I was hoping to do it for her, but she's still stopping me. :/
I don't think she understands the concept of role play vs authors...
(You can email... I mean, I'm a total stranger, but one who is like half-way around the world, so why wouldn't you tell me what you need to say and get it off your chest?)
Something I could suggest? Imagine being in someone else's head reading your writing from their point of view. Not sure if it helps, but I've tried it before. Sort of works.
Aretha: But there's the thing- I don't know if you are keeping the peace. Please don't take this as a personal insult- I make it a matter of discipline to question everything, and I have to admit that I am biased against the idea of an authority figure here, but part of my talking to you is trying to overcome that bias. Also bear in mind that I'm not arguing at all yet. I'm just asking questions.
But if you want to know my thoughts so far- I don't think having a leader of Blogland is a good idea, at all. There's only one place I've ever heard of in existence aside from here where everyone was truly on equal footing- no one was in charge of everyone else. I like it better that way, for a number of reasons.
I don't agree with the fact that you have claimed power without the consent of anyone here- you didn't even talk to anyone here. You never asked if they would rather have an authority to keep them safe, you just declared yourself the ruler.
And I don't agree with anyone setting down laws here and enforcing them that way. I mean, I understand that laws can be useful- my job is as part of a lawmaking body, even, and I hope that I help more people than I hurt- but some people come here just to be away from that. And I know plenty of people here who won't listen to you, even if you do start trying to impose laws. So I think, in a place like this, laws could really cause a lot more harm than aid.
And I'm also against you making laws because if you have this kind of power, you get to act under the assumption that everything you think is right, is right. And I don't think that's fair. Someone else may disagree with you entirely, and I don't think it's right to dismiss someone else's perspective or lifestyle as crazy or wrong, even if it seems that way to you.
1) My author doesn't like email, for some odd reason that I can't understand. 2) *rolls her eyes here* She doesn't want to be a burden or cause anyone to worry.
#2 is basically why I'm on in the first place.
*hugs Sib's author back* That comes from both of us, by the way. Though I'm trying not to allow her enough focus to know what I'm doing. Otherwise, she'll stop me from commenting.

I did the same when a "friend" came out. I was just like "cool. Are you going to eat that?" Yeah...i found out during lunch. So :P

Yes, you do. Her name is Claire.
Do i have to ded now? :/
. . .
Where did the 'know' come from . . . ?
*blushes slightly*
Granmama: Library? Oh and that's wonderful news I'm delighted for you both! Claire..a nice name.
Everything could be easier, Adra. But because it isn't we have friends.
Friends who are more than happy to help you.

I dedicate this page to friends and cupcakes!

Yeah, though.
The Stormlight Archive also had a character who went on a monolouge about how art is dependent on the audience, and I suppose illusions, particularly authority-ones, are art.
I-i don't think that counts. And I don't exactly want to test it out.
are we almost there yet?

Yes Granmama..
Bethany: You're very sensible.
Granmama: it comes with the experience.

(I think we're talking about different things with the same name.)
Granmama: *shakes head*

I would consider authorityyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy . . . . . . . . that which makes others obey you. But I would differentiate it from power - which can be used to make others obey you. Although authority is power. Storms, this is confusing.
I think authority is the power to make others obey you without resorting to using methods of force.
(There are worse things than death, Terri. I disagree with the concept of absolute authority, however.
Perhaps, Star.)
Although it's complicated because a lot of people obey people with authority over them because of the power they have over them, which is kind of a threat of . . . if you disobey me, I could do this, but I would class threats as forcing people to do things.
. . .
I think power doesn't just come with authority, authority comes with power.
@Sophia: I disagree with the concepto of absolute authority, too, I think.
Bethany: I suppose but... I love who she is.
(But one can have authority by using force, Star.)
*tears spring to her eyes* Oh god...
(I will be back soon.)
(Power can be used to gain authority.
Similarly authority can be power, or it can simply be the illusion of power.)
Granmama: then I am glad you have met

Storms.
Yes.
Thank you.
*now disappears*
Au revoir, Star!
I hate it how you type something really long on a glitchy iPod that likes to freeze half way through writing stuff on Safari and no one even acknowledges it....
Aye, Death. *hugs* There is certainly a problem with saying hello right now.
Rose?
*hugs Trip back tightly*
There's a problem with everything right now... And the person I wrote it for didn't even see it... And now I don't' know what to do - and I know that it doesn't sound like too big of an issue, but it is...
I'm scared, Trip...
Loki.
*Pulls Loki into the hug and leans her head in his chest*
*sniffs*
It's beautiful.
Hi Bat.
*hugs tightly*
Scared of what?
Scared of so many things... My little brother is in hospital and no one knows what's wrong with him... He's losing a kilo over night...
(I am back.)
Bethany: So am I... You have no idea how much.
(I would say that you cannot have authority without power. If authority is people doing as you say, and power the methods you use to make people do as you say - then authority would be useless on its own. It would be like trying to arrest an armed offender without a gun - In theory, yes, they should listen to you - but how likely are they to listen to someone who can't do anything to stop them?)
I'm sorry. I wish I could say it'd be all right. But surely you had some good times with him?
You don't need power to have authority; that only makes one feared and hated.
However, if you have respect, people willingly give you authority and abide by your rulings easier.
Hitter rose to power and stole authority. Is he not hated? Was he not feared?
Last time I saw my little brother we fought. We screamed as each other. Over the xBox... If it's serious, then that's the last memory he will have of me...
(That would depend on the way you would use the power, Rose. But fear would also give you authority.)
Okay, not that time. But who really remembers the last times? What about the good times, my friend?
(I believe that if it is serious, he would be more likely to think of the good memories. A death is a lonely one with sadness in your heart.)
True, Sophia, but that turns one into a dictator, not a person of authority.
Trip... We always fight. Me and him. He ptretty much hates me but im the one he comes running to when he hears something in the middle of the night....
(A dictator is an example of a person in a place of authority. As is a police officer or a number of other examples. A dictator just has more authority than most.)

*she's in a sleeveless t-shirt and cargo pants, and also wearing chain mail- the mail is tucked into the cargo pants, but worn over her shirt* *shakes Tanya's hand* Hi, are you Tanya?
There is a storm coming, and sometimes the key to safe harbor is hidden from us, and sometimes it is right before our eyestalks.
...
Wait, what?
Yep! *smiles* are you here about the job offer?
(Hey, Sleepy Hopey!)
Hey, Lav!
I have way too many characters though, and I can't bring them all out at once and they're all doing stuff and I've long since lost track.
*snorts*
Eyestalks. XD
*waves hello*
How is everyone?
Yeah, but it's daytime already. It's just because I didn't sleep until one thirty last night.
Anyway, I might rest later. For now, I'll be here and then I have to do some things.
[Nods]
I don't remember typing eyestalks, it was just there.
Probably autocorrect. :-P
Oh. Okay then. What's your name, stranger?
*laughs*
I just had a strange dialogue thing pop into my head...
Person one: What kind of idiot brings a knife to a gunfight?
Person two: the kind who can throw just as fast as a bullet.
Yeah, don't know where that came from, but there it is.
WOW! The cover is incredible!! It's absolutely stunning!! <3
MISTI HI!!! I DONT KNOW IF YOU REMEMBER ME BUT HI!!!
(@Hope from the Tanya/Hyde fight?)
You're going to have to be more specific with your question, I'm not Ms Monologue. What exactly do you want to know?
*motions to a sofa, and sits down on the far end if it, leaving room for Aretha on the other side*
HI!! And Yes I remember you Lavender!
*Hugs* how are you?
Possibly, but it's just the second person's response. It's something I actually haven't heard anyone say in reply to the saying of knives and guns.
Misti! [hugs] Hi! :-)
:D
And here I thought you'd left!!
*hugs Misti back*
At this moment, I'm good! :) How have you been?
Hi Moss! *Hugs back*
How are you?
(Hello, Misti!)
I am Tanya Halcyon, an average, unremarkable vampire. My intentions are... to protect the citizens of Blogland.
Meow. Meow meow meow.
*isnt actually a cat, but is just being her random odd self*
I'm Great!
And I didn't leave, I just didn't come on for a chat. Sorry about that!
I has some time so I decided that I should come on and talk to people! :D
And I'm glad that your good Lav! :)
Aretha: *frowns slightly* I don't believe that anyone is unremarkable. How do you intend to protect them?
(*cannot think of anything to say* -_-)
OK Tanya! Pleasure to meet you!
*Shakes hand*
And If your intentions are to protect the citizens of Bloggland then I am with you! :D
((Hey! Sorry I vanished my brother called and then sister and I worked on the letter to my Congressman.-Zaf
Zafira: Ari?!
*Slips in with a cloth, and picks Noelle's body up, wrapping her up* *Brings her to the graveyard, and places her in her feeble pine box* *Nails the box shut, and slides it roughly into the ground* *Covers the box up easily, but would undoubtedly crack the box beneath the ground, the weight too much*
*Slips away*
YAY!
*hugs Misti*
Please stay to chat more...
Hi Pyre!!
*waves widely*
Hi Zaf!
*hugs*
How be you both?
If you say so...
*just comes to read his comment*
...
What happened to Noelle....?
(Pyre, no. :c
Look, I'm sorry, okay? I'm sorry!)
*is now really confused*
*looks from Terri to Tia to Pyre, wondering what the heck's going on*
((Read up, Lavender.
Zaf, just to note- Aretha is in Tanya's bunker, talking to her, at the moment.))
Aretha: Do you think every Bloglandian should follow your commands without question?
Hi Pyre! Hi Zaf! ... or Loki ...
HI!
How are you two (Three?)?
Tanya, I'd help to track the guy down but unfortunately teleporters are difficult to track.
... (Who died? And how?)
((Damn it. Okay. I guess I'll slither back to ghostland-Zaf
Yeah, slowly doing that now...
*mumbles something about always getting confused between role play and authors*
*keeps mumbling while going back to the last place in to comments she was at*
Fine. My sister is asleep on me....
*mumbles more*
Right, well I have to go now so bye guys.
*hugs everyone*
*is having a mental argument with herself as she leaves*
AW that's cute!
I had a friend fall asleep on me once, then I had to go but I didn't want to wake her up.
((It's just higher up on this page, guys.))
(*hugs Zaffy* and that's oddly cute.)
Oh, they can question all they want. As long as they understand and obey.
(Bye, Hope!)
Aretha: What would you do if someone didn't obey your orders? And what kinds of laws do you intend to put in place?
((*curls up on Tia* -Zaf
Yes, I know not why she decided I am comfortable, but she refuses to move.
Not quite sure yet. I don't want to change things too much from how they are, but... some people may have to be k- imprisoned, and I need laws to make this clear.
Aretha: *meets her eyes* You wanted to say killed, didn't you?
Bye Lave!! HAve a great day/night!!
(*relaxes, melts into Zafira*)
I'm a vampire, Aretha. I've killed people before. For food, for fun, ,it doesn't matter. It's not about me or Tia any more. I'll be protecting Blogland.
Aretha: By killing its inhabitants?
((*is giggling* Comfy....stay by me...I feel safe.-Zaf
*sighs* I haven't seem John Smith in almost a year...I really miss that crazy name. He's so kind...but I know Alastair will never let him out.-Zaf
(Talk about a coincidence that the one day I was gone for the entire day was the one day she decided to come on .-.)
Hi Blake
How are you?
Eh, I'm alright. Been driving all day so I'm a bit carsick...
What about you?
(Oh, J, better luck next time! Hey.)
Yes, well, he's the one at fault here, breaking the law and killing people. He is a criminal and is no longer considered a citizen, which does not grant him the right to live here.
I'm good thanks!! :D
Aretha: Tanya, what do you think you're doing here- really? What do you think it is that makes Blogland special?
(Better luck? That was amazing luck. Avoided another big old argument.)
What I think makes Blogland special is the people who live here, the people who visit, too. I'm here to ensure their continued survival.
Aretha: Do you think everything in Blogland should belong to you?
What do you want from me?

Do any of you want to see sketches of Val and SP that I did?

I hope that you like them

*paces, staring at the ground, muttering, her eyebrows furrowed*
(The deleted comment was mine, because the italics of that previous comment weren't working, and I don't settle for subpar formatting.)
If it helps defend the people, then yes. I am hardly a petty thief.
Hello, Scarlet.
[Remains with his copy of Oedipus Rex, listening to a few neo-classical mixes on his turntable]
[His foot taps gently, leading about the antics of a protagonist and his love affairs with his mother, deeply interested in the psychology of the subject]
[Closes his book and retires for bed, undressing, and with the assistance of Mr. Hill, places his clothes away]
[Mr. Finch lays under his duvet, quietly, and closes his eyes, drifting away].
((Hi there, Blake and Scarlet.))
Aretha: What made you think we need all of this? And how will you know what's good for the people?
*pauses, nods to everyone, goes back to pacing*
Hello Amadeus, Blake.
Why do you need this?
*frowns*
What are you even arguing?
Would you like me to withdraw my army, despite Loki's threat of attack?
Would you like me to legalise murder again, which will be seen as a public approval of murder of children?
Or would you like everything to stay as it is, with me keeping the peace.
(Scar? *hugs her*)
[When Sibyllin wakes up! she's back under the tree in Blogland]
[What the hell just happened?]
[My head hurts...]
(Hello, A. Finch.)
(Hey, Sib. Interesting developments...)
*stops pacing when Tia hugs her*
*hugs back with a sigh*
I'm worried about my author... And because she's not planning to say what's going on in her head, I was hoping to do it for her, but she's still stopping me. :/
I don't think she understands the concept of role play vs authors...
[Mutters under her breath]
I am never leaving my bunker again.
((A/N: This is one of those moments where I wish I could read my own writing from outside my head somehow...))
(You can email... I mean, I'm a total stranger, but one who is like half-way around the world, so why wouldn't you tell me what you need to say and get it off your chest?)
((A/N: [hugs Scarlet and her author]))
(It's 3 am and I'm really sleepy. Good night!
I wish you all a fantastic day, followed by warm sleep.)
1) My author doesn't like email, for some odd reason that I can't understand.
2) *rolls her eyes here* She doesn't want to be a burden or cause anyone to worry.
#2 is basically why I'm on in the first place.
*hugs Sib's author back*
That comes from both of us, by the way. Though I'm trying not to allow her enough focus to know what I'm doing. Otherwise, she'll stop me from commenting.
Sleep well, Tia. I should probably go as well. My author now has something she needs to start on.
Farewell.
Sleep well, Tia.
Bye Scarlet.
((Goodnight, Tia.
Not sure whether or not I'll go as well, now, since all my character can really do now is cry..))
Well if everyone else is going, there's not much point in my sticking around.
Although...
