Writing Year in Review

What a year that was...

2014 saw the final part of my EPIC nine-book series reaching the shelves, and there was much rejoicing. It was a bit of a scramble to get it written in time, as it generally is, but this book achieved everything I wanted it to achieve, and so I remain immensely proud of it. The ninth book, and the events that transpire within it, had been a secret I'd been keeping for seven years, and it was such a relief to get it out there. Sure, I didn't tie up every last plot thread — in some cases I just ran out of time, in others I decided to be mean and simply not resolve stuff — but it was a fitting send-off, I think.

The publication saw another astonishing Tom Percival cover, plus a very limited black edition which, as it turned out, was an extraordinarily clever bit of marketing by yours truly. It meant that the excitement that first morning was ELECTRIC as everyone rushed to search through each shop. That wasn't my original intent — I just wanted a cool black book — but to follow the tweets that morning as each copy got snapped up... that was awesome.

The reaction to the book was exactly what I wanted, also. True, there was some confusion over the chapters that ended mid-sentence, but all in all, readers understood what I was doing. And then to catch you all out right at the end....

... glorious...

The Dying of the Light got me back touring, of course, and we fit in the Requiem Ball and the Theatre of Shadows, and I once again visited New Zealand and Australia and met loads of enthusiastic readers. If ever my ego was in need of a boost...

And then I got home, and got to work on the NEW book.

I'm fine, thanks.

Ew, cat breath! It smells awful..

Do you know any Green Day songs? If so, what are your favourites?

John said...

I like Basket Case

John said...

And yes, cat breath is pretty bad....

Hi and bye, Guitar Man...

Raven Astracae said...

Hello.

John said...

Hello Raven, how are you?

Raven Astracae said...

I'm not okay, but that's ok. How are you?

John said...

It doesn't strike me as okay at all that you're not okay, what is it that is making you okay with not being okay? I my self am perfectly okay.

Raven Astracae said...

Well what's making me not okay, happens all the time, not to me, but to the human race. So that's okay. And it's okay that I'm not okay, because you can't be okay all the time. And sooner or later, I'll be okay again. It's very good that you are okay.

John said...

Well, if you're really sure it will be okay I won't argue with you. We seem to have the same problem as last night though, with us being the only two here and neither being terribly good at small talk which leaves us at a loss as to what we should do.

John said...

Ah here's something, an excellent song that I have just recently come to truly love.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buDzp8GfHzQ

Raven Astracae said...

Thank you. That is true, maybe we are actually both really good at small talk, but for some unknown reason us, and everyone else who isn't very good at small talk, were abducted. Then, we were turned into minions of some unknown species, and for their plan to work in twenty years time, they need us to think we are bad at small talk. And then, one day, BAM!, we all get arrested for assisting an alien species take over our world. Don't know how this'll help what we should do. Maybe we can just talk.

Raven Astracae said...

That's actually an alright song. Their sound reminds me of The Killers. They have that same sound.

John said...

They're an amazing band, and that particular song holds a special place in my life.

Raven Astracae said...

What sort of music are you into?

John said...

Honestly all sorts. I don't like country, and don't even speak of this new generation of pop which every brainless teenage girl seems to think passes for music. Other than that I am perfectly open to whatever you may suggest to me.

Raven Astracae said...

I'm like that too. I love music though, music is like, I don't even have a word for something that amazing. I like to think I'm multigenrical. My dad loves country music and every time he drives you somewhere you get subjected to it. I don't hate it, but don't actively listen to it. I also feel the same about mainstream pop music, because alternative pop music is sometimes okay. I like Aussie Hip-Hop. That's probably my favourite genre. Yeah.

John said...

I'm more of a punk rock kind of guy, though you'd never tell by just looking at me.

Raven Astracae said...

I don't think you'd be able to tell much about anyone just by looking at them. But I get what you mean.

John said...

Right you are... Anyways I've got to go pretty soon.

Raven Astracae said...

Okay. It was nice speaking to you J.
Bye. :))

I apologize for disappearing.
J, I like that song :)
Both Love Drunk and Basket case. Thank you.

(I liked Velvet's idea of the sun dying, because our sun is actually dying so it relates to real life and we're all panicked, we have no food, maybe it sets fire to blogland and Chione and Juvia could put the fires out? And as Sophia said, her characters can fix the sun, but after while.)

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

Hello?

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

(Perhaps. There must be a reason for the sun suddenly starting to die, however. The sun is half way through its main sequence. In about 1.1 billion years it will be 10% bigger than it is today. At which point I believe it will dry up the atmosphere and some forms of life. In 3.5 billion years life will cease to exist on Earth.
So first issue - a sun does not spontaneously decide to die.
Second issue - The starting of fires is somewhat unlikely. Things will simply dry up.
It would be potentially possible for these things to happen should something actively seek to make it happen, by concentrating the sunlight, for example. Though who, what and why?

Perhaps I am being too scientific about this, but if you are going to do something, you may as well do it right.)

Zanida Laufeydottir Queen of Asgard (Zafira Kerias) said...

I don't feel like the sun dying is going to be solvable. That just you may as well say goodbye to life, you can't solve that, not even a god.

So unless you people want to die...it can't work.

I am not overly fond of that, so if the dying sun is your choice, I will be leaving,I see no point in doing a plot that is next to impossible to solve, and guarentees my death.

Sorry, am a little distant at the moment.

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

So am I.

Lavender Hope said...

What are you doing now?

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

Uh...

Okay, I lied. I'm not distant. Just here, on my phone. Talking. What about you?

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

Phone thinks I'm in Italy.

10/10

Lavender Hope said...

Well, I was talking to my cousins, but now they're talking among themselves, so... I'm here too.

Never mind. Now we're trying to see who's taking their shower next... If I win rock, paper, scissors, then I get to go later.

And I did win, so I'll be here for a little longer.

:P

Lavender Hope said...

That's strange. You aren't in Italy, right?

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

Nope.

Phone thinks Italy's currency is GBP.

11/10

(Just shower! ... wow

At least you're having fun XD)

Lavender Hope said...

Okay... You're phone is odd.

And ikr?! XP We've both been busy today and wanted to take a break before going, so we battled it out. XD

Lavender Hope said...

Gah, why do I keep using the wrong word???

*your

Lavender Hope said...

Okay, also still a little distant.

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

It is weird.

*realises he can't think of anything to talk about*

:/

Lavender Hope said...

*doesn't have much to say either*
Well, I'd ask how your day was, but that'd be a strange question coming from me... :/

Seriously, how did we manage talking everyday in the past? I'm still wondering that... It seemed like there was so much to talk about...

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

Good question.

...

I'm blanking out. How is... Life?

Lavender Hope said...

Well, it has it's ups and downs. I've had my share of both today.
*thinks*
Huh, there was more to talk about when I was still doing school, because that's something I would talk about before.

Gah, gotta take my shower now... Be back in like, 30 minutes!

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(Probably should've mentioned that I saw your last comment. I'm not that distant.)

Lavender Hope said...

*is back*
Aaaaand I forgot what I was going to say. Darn it. :P

Lavender Hope said...

Wow, that was almost exactly thirty minutes.

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

It was 20.

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

Or not...

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

*pulls Hope into a warm, tight hug and huggles and smiles and plays with her hair and massages her and smiles throughout it and hugs extra tightly* :)

Lavender Hope said...

:P
*is trying to remember what it was that she was going to say*
*mumbles as she thinks out loud*
Trying to think up ways to make a conversation. I had an idea about saying jokes, but my jokes are horrible-

Oh! I remember now! Have you heard of Jason Miraz(did I spell that right)?

Lavender Hope said...

*is hugged extra tightly while trying to keep breathing*
*tenses her shoulders because massages actually tickle her*
*giggles*

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

No, I have not. Who is he?

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(So... when we don't have much to talk about, we rp? Yes? We figured it out?)

Lavender Hope said...

He's a musician. One of his most popular songs is called I'm Yours. Some of his others songs that I like are Wordplay and I Won't Give Up. The reason I asked is because I started learning how to play I'm Yours on guitar. It's so fun! :)

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(Ooh, a memory.

Birmingham shopping center. Using phone to be on Blogland. Happy thought.)

Other said...

All your guitars are belong to me.

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

That's awesome. I'll check it out in a few minutes.

Lavender Hope said...

Um... I guess? I'm not actually TRYING to rp, it's just that I respond to whatever is going on around me...

If I get pulled into a role play, I'm still me, the author. Even when I use my powers, it's still me... This is why it gets confusing when I start role playing. ^^'

Lavender Hope said...

Hi Mystery. You new?

Not my guitar. Nuh-uh. I don't think you'd like a purple one.
*holds onto her guitar protectively*

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(Sorry for ruining this moment, but I created Mystery Guitar Man. No idea why.)

Lavender Hope said...

*realizes how late it is*
*also realizes how not tired she is, even though she was tired earlier*
*also realizes that the room light is still on even though it's so late*

Lavender Hope said...

*nods*
That's okay, Tia. Good to know.
*whispers*
He's still not gettin' my guitar though, nope.

*is acting a little crazier than usual*

Other said...

I will trade you your guitar for a brand-new one. *nods*

Lavender Hope said...

And that reminds me, Japanese people think crazy is an insult or something. I once called my friend's younger brother crazy(because he was totally acting it) and he started denying it like, "I'm not crazy, no, no." And then some people seemed shocked that I would say that to someone. :P

I take being crazy as a compliment, even if people say it's not a good thing...

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(Probably because crazy people get taken to asylums and then they're screwed.

You wouldn't wish that on a fellow citizen.)

Lavender Hope said...

*looks suspiciously at Guitar Man*
What kind of brand-new one?

Lavender Hope said...

@Tia: I guess not, but my friend's brother was just being silly. Like any normal 12 year old would.

Wbd.

Other said...

Any kind you want. It will be brand new.

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

Good night if you're off to sleep! :)

Lavender Hope said...

*thinks of her options*
*considers it*
Sorry, I like mine how it is.
*pats her guitar fondly and nods firmly at GM(my new nickname for him)*

Lavender Hope said...

Not yet, just finishing getting ready.

Really, it's strange. I don't feel tired yet... But it's so late... :/

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(I know. I went to sleep late yesterday and could barely fall asleep.)

Other said...

*when she's not looking, swaps Hope's guitar for a similar, brand-new guitar*

Lavender Hope said...

Well, until I get sleepy enough, I'll stay on to talk to you. :)

After all, we are the only ones here at the moment. I almost forgot that everyone else is still at school. Or probably just finishing.

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(What time is it for you?)

Lavender Hope said...

*recognizes the trade easily, as this new guitar doesn't have the really easily noticeable scratch at the top of it*
*frowns at GM, putting her hands on her hips in an angry way*
Alright, hand it over. I know my guitar when I see it.

Lavender Hope said...

I actually did scratch my guitar pretty badly only a few months after I got it... I'm so bad at taking care of my things omg. XP

12:34... AM

Other said...

But I gave you a better guitar. Do you not like it?

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(That's pretty late...)

Lavender Hope said...

Actually, it was only the very top part of it, right on the head, and it hit something hard enough to chip the wood...

Still, makes it all the more personal, ya know? Even if I AM horrible at taking care of my stuff...

Lavender Hope said...

Yeah...

@GM: I like mine how it is. Scratches, chips, dents, and all.

(Doesn't have any really noticeable scratches, but there is one teeny, tiny dent near the end of the strings... I don't even know how that one happened. XD)

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(I take extra care of my stuff so I feel even worse when something gets damaged.)

Lavender Hope said...

I TRIED to be careful with it, but I'm just really clumsy with... pretty much everything, honestly speaking..

Other said...

*holds the guitar*

*pushes one hand against it, and his eyes concentrate on it for a few seconds as he pushes against it*

*then he grunts, eases up, and hands the guitar back*

Good luck with using that!

*he smiles, taking his new guitar away from Hope*

Lavender Hope said...

I did feel really bad when it got chipped though. The first real damage I did to it, besides accidentally knocking it into a few things... Not hard, but I worry at my own horrible safekeeping skills. :/

Lavender Hope said...

*checks over her guitar, wondering what he did to it*

Other said...

I absorbed the essence of the bond between the user and the instrument.

Lavender Hope said...

*blinks*
Okay... So... what? Does that mean it's not going to play for me anymore?

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

Oh, it's going to try.

But it will fail, and it's failure to make you happy will make it insane.

>:D

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(Whoops, that was meant to be by GM

Lavender Hope said...

It's okay, Tia. ^.^

*plucks a few strings*
*out of tune notes come out from it*
*winces, but tries to tune the guitar anyway, hoping it would work*

Other said...

Mwahahahahaha!

*plays "Highway to Hell" on his guitar*

Lavender Hope said...

*tunes it with love and patience, understanding it's difficulties at what GM did to it*

*remembers*
My guitar is actually a she... I was told that it's a tradition for musicians to name their instruments. Mine's Melody. :)

Lavender Hope said...

Someone tried to give it a different name that also worked, but I've forgotten what it was...

*continues trying to tune the stubborn strings, making sure not to tighten them too much, while still trying to get the note right*
*hears a hint of the right notes, but can't quite get there yet*

Tanya Halcyon (Kas) said...

(I have to go eat. Good night if you fall asleep!

We can talk tomorrow, ok?)

Lavender Hope said...

Okay. See you tomorrow then! :)

*waves goodbye and goes to try sleeping*

Lavender Hope said...

*notices the comment number*
After...

Lavender Hope said...

This.

Lavender Hope said...

I dedicate this page to my guitar, Melody. We've only been playing together for half a year, but already, I can tell that we'll be together for a long time. And as a musician, I'll be happy if my guitar can be there with me when I finally get the chance to sing for the public.

*goes to sleep now*

Lavender Hope said...

*mumbles something about the last page having an explination as to why her guitar has a name*

Star Inkbright said...

@Zaf: The sun dying IS solvable, it's just difficult. I do understand your concerns, though - if it wasn't solvable, I would be objecting on the same grounds.

Sophia may be being slightly too scientifical, but we do need to know why it's dying. If we don't know the cause, it'll be very hard to fix. You need to understand a problem in order to solve it.

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

We weren't, we were doing it behind you. You turned around.

And don't be so mean. It's not horrible!

Savannah said...

(Perfect! So basically, the zombies sunk and their germs and infection polluted the water, then the infection manages to spread to the grass nearby and slowly it starts to spread all over Blogland and kills trees and wildlife or whatever. Then we find out that people who go to patches of Blogland which are infected become zombies but there's a cure and everyone needs to help find it while zombies are walking around Blogland but they look like normal people so it's hard to tell who is infected. Yeah?)

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

(Hmm..
Vampires can't become zombies...
Neither could etherdemons..
Or werewolves or incubi..)

(Mmm..maybe...)

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

Claire: Why did you have to use tongues?

Bethany: It's nice...

Evelyn: *she opens her locker and places her handbag inside, removing her coat and placing it inside* *she removes her jacket printed with the supermarket logo from the locker, slipping it on before she closes and locks the locker again*

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

(I believe it would be better to have a sentient antagonist rather than something similar to a zombie.)

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

*smiles*
She tastes nice. What where you saying?

Star Inkbright said...

@Velvet: Sounds quite cool. :)

But, seriously. Hunter and Ez can't be changed mentally or physically by anything. They jsut get allergic reactions.
(Which is kind of stupid really. The allergic reactions often do more damage than the changing-stuff itself. :P Some protection system that is.)

However, that doesn't stop it being a cool roleplay idea. :)

Savannah said...

(Haha, I dunno, it seemed like a good idea at the time, would it be seen as unfair if the vampires and stuff couldn't be infected? Or people like you could use another character or I dunno... Would you like to continue from yesterday?)

Savannah said...

(A what Soph?)

Star Inkbright said...

@Sophia: *shrugs* You could have a sentinent antagonist causing the zombies, if you want. :P

Star Inkbright said...

@Velvet: I still think it's a good idea, personally. *shrugs*

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

(Sure Velvet..)

Star Inkbright said...

@Velvet: Sentient antagonist - 'bad guy' who can think.

Commander Sophia Keating (N7 Operative and Council Spectre) said...

Claire: Ew.

Star Inkbright said...

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

(Okay Soph)

*smiles*
Yeah I'm okay.

Savannah said...

(Yeah, I don't know, maybe because the "disease" is being caught from th egress that's making it worse in some way which means vampires and stuff can catch it too?)

*the girl hides in the underwater cave*

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

(maybe..
Or just plain drinking an infected blood..)

Ashlea: *swims blindly down*

Star Inkbright said...

I think it's not entirely implausible that vampires would be able to catch it . . .
Hunter and Ez, no, though. However, if they came into contact with the disease (depending on how strong it was), they'd probably start dying, which would be enough of a problem anyway, I think. :P

@Silente: Yes.
Maybe vampires wouldn't catch it in the ordinary way, but drinking blood, that sounds likely. I know in The Morganville Vampires vampires get drunk when they drink the blood of drunk people. I mean, I know that's a different canon, but yeah, reasonable explanation.

(True, what about the wolves and demons or other people that can't catch it as easy?)
