The Dying of the Light

The final book.

The last Skulduggery.

I've been writing these books since 2005, so for me it's been nine years of living with these characters, in this world. I knew saying goodbye was not going to be easy...

But I haven't had to say goodbye yet. Not really. I wrote the book. I edited. I went through it again and again. I decided on covers, on approaches. I approved tour schedules and special events. I prepared. I tweeted. I blogged. I kept busy. I kept looking forward...

But now... now (most of) the preparation is done. I just have to turn up now, and talk, or sign, or talk and sign, and meet people and go places.

It's going to sink in NOW. I can feel it.

No more Skulduggery Pleasant.

I'm going to give my usual "No Spoilers" speech now. So, like, no spoilers, people. The comment section above is for spoilers, not this one.

But even outside of this blog, please be considerate of your fellow Minions. Don't go blasting spoilers on Facebook or Twitter or Tumblr. Be subtle about it, and if you can't be subtle, go LOUD with the spoiler warning.

And when I say spoiler I don't just mean" "Oh my god, I can't believe THIS CHARACTER did THAT to THAT OTHER CHARACTER!"

I also mean spoilers in a more general sense. For example, saying things like: "Derek, I can't believe you did that! I'll never forgive you! How could you?? That was my favourite character!!"

Or: "I'm so delighted! I loved it and the ending was just what I wanted!"

You have friends, Minions, who know your hopes and dreams. They know your favourite characters. They know what you're dreading. So don't confirm any of these things when you comment, even if you make sure not to get too specific. If you love the book, tell me. If you hate the book, tell me that too. But keep in mind that other people will be reading, and if you give away what kind of ending the book has, you've just cheated them out of finding out for themselves.

I love your enthusiasm. Your enthusiasm makes these books what they are. So while you're being considerate of your friends, be sure to revel in your enthusiasm, and your excitement, and your dread, and your horror, and your happiness and your despair.

I hope you like it.

Did you know there are a lot of people in the world that think Tasmania is just a place that WB made up? I was outraged to find that out. Like, seriously?!!!

People tell me I'm good at art, though, and I give those kinds of excuses.
(Most people's problem when they drawe observationally is that they draw what they think should be there instead of what's actually there. I just want to bang their heads into a brick wall because it is REALLY NOT HARD to just shade where there is shade etc. People often decide to "put shading on" and they just shade the sides of the pot and I'm just like "Does the shade actually look like that . . . ?"
-_-
It isn't drawing skill. That's COMMON SENSE. :P)
And maybe having a logical mind is having a way with music. Common sense is what you need to make an observation drawing, and a logical mind is what you need to have a way with music, maybe.
(Although of course you can have a way with music in different ways and so on.)

(At least the quotes have proven one thing - lots of people are illogical.)

@Snow: What?????? :O

@Death: Still. :)

Star Inkbright said...

(That doesn't mean you have to be GOOD at shading the shade. You just have to shade where there is shade.

Snow said...

Hmmm

But people tell me all the time that I'm smart and I'm just "no. I'm not. I'm logical. I think logically. I take in and store information I know will be needed, I find it easy to memorize things because I practice, I pick things up quickly because I pay attention. I'm not smart, I just think ahead"

Star - no. No it is not. Shush. Smart might mean something else to you, but to me it means not acting idiotic on a regular basis. Thus I am not smart. Just logical.

Oh. Thats what I was gonna say when I came on: I watched captain America, winter soldier

Star Inkbright said...

@Dragona: Seth! :)

@Snow: Being logical IS smart, you plank. :P I'm intelligent and I'm also one of the most unintelligent people I know.
When we go through history, we look at Edward Jenner and Louis Pasteur and people and we look at how they thought in an intelligent sicentific manner.
What's scientific thinking?
Being logical.
Where did scientific thinking get them?
Into history books, remembered as geniuses.
(Genii?)

Anyway, yeah. Like when I read old comments, it's the previous me writing them, not me now. Same with notes left by people who are now dead.)

Star Inkbright said...

(Or when I write "Hey, people who read back in the comments! Are you enjoying these or would you prefer us to be talking about toasters? Answer when you next see me!"
That's me-now talking, not me as I am when they read it.

I have a feeling I am being confusing. :P)

Dragona Pine said...

(When you read the note, they would be dead. But wouldn't know when they wrote it. They could have been writing it WHILST dead or they could have been doing it while alive. You wouldn't know which.
Although it's VERY improbable someone could do it whilst dead... you still wouldn't know.
You would read the note when they were dead, therefore you would know about the existence of the note and what it says whilst they were dead.)

Snow said...

*smothers the both of you* stop being amazing. Now. Or else.

Star Inkbright said...

@Dragona: Yes.
But as far as I know, the dead can't write notesthemselves.

@Snow: I WILL WHEN YOU WILL. :)

Star Inkbright said...

Something is very something-y.

Dragona Pine said...

(I didn't know I deserved being smothered for talking about dead people writing...

Star, you read Skulduggery Pleasant.
There is nothing to say that Derek isn't writing about Skulduggery Pleasant so people are used to the idea of magic for when the sorcerers take over the world.
Like there's nothing to say that EA isn't controlled by Reapers who are indoctrinating people who play Mass Effect.)

Snow said...

Oh - did I tell you I got the elephant home from school?

And when the science teacher asked why I made an elephant when I was supposed to be making molecule disgrams with the clay I said "I did make and element. El3"

And then I wrote it on the paper and sat the elephant down and she just shook her head and took a picture of that plus the rest of the work (which my group and I had done beforehand)

Dragona Pine said...

(Snow - lol.)

Snow said...

El3 is the chemical symbol for elephant now.

Commander Shepard - Female: Believe it or not, we sometimes have good ideas, Wrex. You should try listening.

Zanida Laufeydottir Queen of Asgard (Zafira Kerias) said...

Zanida is fine with dresses, Zaf is hating them and Ricci and Olivia love them. Loki actually may wear his Midgardian suit, and Thor...too sexy to cover rippling muscles, I think he's wearing what he usually wears to feasts.-Zaf

Dragona Pine said...

(For Leri... she can't exactly wear a dress. So I've changed her hood colour to black rather than purple, the fastenings of her suit from gold to black, and given her a long skirt.

For Sophia... well. We're still debating it. I think.)

In real life, I don't think I even own any dresses. XD

Zanida Laufeydottir Queen of Asgard (Zafira Kerias) said...

I just have a Zavel argument currently in my head.

Zaf doesn't want to wear a dress, Ravel told her she had to especially being she's a Grand Mage, and she stuck her tongue at him and now he kissed her to get her to agree which for him always works and now she's going to wear a dress.

On the Asgardian side, Thor and Zan are cuddling, Loki and Astrid are talking and Ricci is playing with Olivia.

I said it before: Leave me alone, demon.

Lucifer: Why? Why should I leave you alone?

Zanida: Who the hell are you?

Lucifer: Lucifer, a demon, and Overlord of Hell.

Zanida: You are unwelcome here, Lucifer, now leave.

Lucifer: Do not order me around, girl.

Do not speak to my sister that way, she is a warrior, and a far better person then you may ever hope to be.

Zanida Laufeydottir Queen of Asgard (Zafira Kerias) said...

Lucifer: Is that supposed to scare me?

Zanida: *draws lance, setting it on fire* Leave.

Lucifer: *grins, electrocuting Zanida*

Zanida: WHAT WAS THAT FOR?! *is shaking*

Lucifer: Your brother never explained what happened? Let me explain, you see Loki summoned me, and I did him a favor, but he was mine once I did that favor, so I tried to damn him, and of course Loki slipped away. I want your brother for my collection of demons, I want him as MINE.

Zanida: Then you will have to go through myself and Thor and Frigga, so I suggest you hang it up.

Lucifer: *grabs Zanida's arm* Do you wish to join your brother?

Zanida: Let go of me!!!

*fires sceptre at Lucifer*

Lucifer: *goes back to Hell, taking the Queen with him^

“Most people's problem when they draw observationally is that they draw what they think should be there instead of what's actually there. "

@Star: That's very true. But I don't think it's all common sense or lack thereof that causes that, because when we LOOK at the world, we don't see exactly what is there.
Our brains process the information our eyes sense, and they do that by using experience and/or instinctive perceptual abilities, depending on who you ask, I guess.
Because we use various depth cues, like how high up something is against the horizon line, and how much texture detail you can see, and superimposition - if something looks like it's covering up part of something else; and also constancies, like recognising something is the same colour even thought the light intensity is different, or knowing an object is the same object on viewing it from a different angle, even though you're seeing a different shape; as well as influence of experience & expectation & present mindset.

And these things mean that if you had a person and an elephant, and they both were the same height, your brain would automatically perceive the elephant to be further away, because it knows that it's bigger.
Or if you had a purple shirt, and you saw it at night, when the light means that actually, it's hardly recognizable as purple, really - but your brain KNOWS the purple that it is, (by experience, or by comparison with the colours of other objects in the same light) and perceives/recognises that colour anyway.
It also means that if you're out in a large crowd somewhere, and a friend walks past, you're less likely to notice them there, because you weren't expecting them to be there - whereas if you were MEETING your friend in town, you'd pick them out in a crowd more easily, because that's what you're EXPECTING to see.

And this is very handy in every day life, of course. But when you're drawing from observation, it really fucks things up for you. :P

(TBC)

Zanida Laufeydottir Queen of Asgard (Zafira Kerias) said...

Now how am I supposed to explain this to Thor? *looks up at the sky* Heimdall? Help? *The Bifrost opens taking Loki back up to Asgard* I need to get to Hell.

Heimdall: Which for us, is Niffleheim, which you plan to go to alone, to retrieve your sister.

Yes, would you want to tell Thor what happened?

Heimdall: I would not want to.

Then send me over.

Heimdall: *does so*

Mary Contrary said...

Because if you're drawing a person, and there's shadow on part of their face, you're just going to WANT to use basically just a darker version of whatever colour you were using before - you want to stick to 'skin tones'.
But, actually, if you zoomed into the picture of that face, you'd probably find purples, blues, greens - but because of that colour constancy in your visual perception, it's difficult to actually be able to look and see that, because you're effectively telling your brain to stop processing information - which it HAS to do to an image, otherwise it'd be upside down- or, actually, no, it'd just be electrical impulses and whatnot, wouldn't it?

And, say you're drawing a foot, and you KNOW that it's foot shaped, right.
So when you see it and you're trying to draw it, and you can't get it to look right because you're trying to draw a foot.
If you take a foot, looking straight at it, VERY simply the space it fills will make up a rectangle shape.
of a square shaped space.
(I'm not explaining that very well, but if you looked in a drawing theory guide book thing But if you turn your foot at a funny angle and try again, you'd find that it takes up moreor something, you'd probably find it explained better. Diagrams would be useful, but this is a text box, so.. :P)
And so it's kind of about REFUSING your brain to perceive the shape as constant, that it's still the same object & the same shape, because from a drawing point of view, it ISN'T.

So I'm not ruling common sense out, yeah, but I think there's a bit more to it than just that, because learning to see what's there only as the shapes and physical colours that are actually there in a two dimensional image, means semi-relearning how to see.
Which is kind of incredible. O_O

Unfortunately, (Or maybe fortunately? xD) I can't talk about music, because I don't have a clue. :P

BUt YEAH.

SORRY FOR THIS HUGE RAMBLING I JSUT THINK It'S COOL AND I LIKE TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE THINGS AND ALSO RAMBLINg I JUST LIKE TO USE WORDDDDS. :P

Also, I don't think I'm even here, sorry. :P

@Taia: Ah, so THAT'S why when I draw things I end up getting tons of random greens and blues and such when the thing I'm drawing doesn't actually haev them on . . .
(I think that if you stay at tons of different shades of cream next to each other, then you will see that that cream is more blue and that cream is more green and that cream is more grey and then you'll make them green and blue and grey when really they're all kind of cream . . .)

Hey guys!
So I found two dresses I like for the ball but I'm not sure which one. Neither are what I really want but I've been looking for a while.
So number one:
I love the shape of the dress and would have it in blue with pink sparkels and without the purse or the thing around her hands.
Link- http://www.megadresses.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Pink-Wedding-Dresses-2.jpg

Number two:
I like that it is blue and pink and is smiled than other dresses I've seen but I'm worried it's to big. (As in the skirt is too puffy)

(Currently I'm trying to make a deal with Sophia... consisting of that she can take the mech to the next event, she can have the dress armour plated, she can wear combat boots underneath the dress because you know, no one will notice, and she can carry two pistols with her.)

Hello all

Dragona Pine said...

(Sophia couldn't care less what she looks like... As long as it's practical. So armour, basically. All she wears is military uniform or armour, normally...
She ONCE wore a dress but she was shot in the shoulder. She didn't have any weapons on her, either. So that's probably why she doesn't like it...
Again, another quote, "I am a soldier, not a bloody princess. I wear armour and carry guns, I do not wear dresses and carry handbags.")

Hey all, me and my eyes are fine. My replies might be slow as I'm on my phone btw. Yes, I shall go to the ball.

Dugglyn Carzainia said...

Hmmmm, I, personally like the pink dress better but I can't find it the way I want it so I'm gonna go for the poofy one. More room to hide a sword.

Edward Fletcher said...

Might be a stupid question, but when is the ball?

Inky Flame said...

saturday

Inky Flame said...

No probs ^^

Dragona Pine said...

(When I say "just a soldier" - I mean well... she's very good. Very good. Elite. Special operations. The best of the best of the best.
But she's still just a soldier. :P
And a peace keeping agent, but that's another matter entirely.)

(Sil: Sophia soldiers can wear dresses. Buck up.)

Dragona Pine said...

(Sophia: *sighs* I'm a Spectre. Which means I have to be ready for any eventuality. All I'll be ready for in a dress is having a party, not an armed gang walking in and shooting.)

Star Inkbright said...

I like the pink one better, Dugglyn . . . :) :) They're both really nice. :)

Also - yeah, mine looks more realistic (yay! I'll take your word for it), which is what one goes for in observational drawings, I do believe. :P YAAAAAY I GET TO BE CORRECT!
And they possibly look equally good because they were both done by me?
*nods*
*is happy to not look like an idiot :P*

Silente, you drew things! Arghhhhh why people do to effort? *glares friendlililily at her and Lantern :P*
They look great. :) They suit your characters.

Lantern, your dress is gorgeous. :) *hugs*

Was that everyone . . . ?

I haven't found anything yet . . . oops.

Ed, my copy of TDOTL is currently somewhere between the UK and Pennsylvania, where I live. So I have no idea if it'll be here exactly September 17th or earlier, or god forbid later, but yeah, I have a long wait to even read the book. -Zaf

Edward Fletcher said...

I managed to get the shadow and black edition, only just.

Dugglyn Carzainia said...

I pre-ordered the shadow edition. And I'm trying to find the normal edition in Canada so I do t have to pay for super eyes shipping.

Edward Fletcher said...

Sorry Zaf, it's worth the wait though

Dugglyn Carzainia said...

I have 19 days....
At least that's what they said. But it could be more or less...

Dugglyn Carzainia said...

Oh I got to go. Will be back sometime later today.

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

(soz. Poofed. Food popped up. Also my brain is struggling to function. As are my eyes.)
(Sil: Of course you'll be ready for a gang of thugs. This is you. You could be in a straight jacket and probably still beat up some armed thugs.)
(@Dug you mean for the ball or away from the ball?)

Star Inkbright said...

I don't know when I'll get one . . . I just have to buy one, but . . .

Zanida Laufeydottir Queen of Asgard (Zafira Kerias) said...

Hello forget me not

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

(Hello Forget Me Not. I like your name. It reminds me of the flower. Can I shorten it? Maybe yo Fo. Or Fog...)

Inky Flame said...

Hey Forget

Star Inkbright said...

I'll probably get it on the fifteenth if not before . . . :/

I never talk to people about SP books because I can't discuss spoilers here. And then once they've been out a few months it doesn't come up . . . so when I do get to it's really cool. :) I discuss them with my sister occasionally . . .

Edward Fletcher said...

Hello silente, are you still a vampire?

Inky Flame said...

I'm going to a car boot sale

I can't wait

Star Inkbright said...

Dugglyn Carzainia said...

Hello Silente, nice to meet you.
Hey Edward, nice to meet you to!
You can shorten it to whatever you want.
(I at first read Yo Fo as Froyo, don't ask why)
And the name came from the flower. They are my favorite flowers.

Dugglyn Carzainia said...

Hi Star!
Hi Inky!

Inky Flame said...

Hey, is it alright if I call you Fluer?

Dugglyn Carzainia said...

Yes, Fluer or Forget or even Froyo work.

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

I am indeed Edward. Why does this concern you?

I am now going to have to eternally call you Froyo. Sorry.

Dragona Pine said...

(Sorry I poofed.

Hey Forget Me Not. I don't believe we've met. I'm Dragona.)

Dugglyn Carzainia said...
