The last Skulduggery.
I've been writing these books since 2005, so for me it's been nine years of living with these characters, in this world. I knew saying goodbye was not going to be easy...
But I haven't had to say goodbye yet. Not really. I wrote the book. I edited. I went through it again and again. I decided on covers, on approaches. I approved tour schedules and special events. I prepared. I tweeted. I blogged. I kept busy. I kept looking forward...
But now... now (most of) the preparation is done. I just have to turn up now, and talk, or sign, or talk and sign, and meet people and go places.
It's going to sink in NOW. I can feel it.
No more Skulduggery Pleasant.
I'm going to give my usual "No Spoilers" speech now. So, like, no spoilers, people. The comment section above is for spoilers, not this one.
But even outside of this blog, please be considerate of your fellow Minions. Don't go blasting spoilers on Facebook or Twitter or Tumblr. Be subtle about it, and if you can't be subtle, go LOUD with the spoiler warning.
And when I say spoiler I don't just mean" "Oh my god, I can't believe THIS CHARACTER did THAT to THAT OTHER CHARACTER!"
I also mean spoilers in a more general sense. For example, saying things like: "Derek, I can't believe you did that! I'll never forgive you! How could you?? That was my favourite character!!"
Or: "I'm so delighted! I loved it and the ending was just what I wanted!"
You have friends, Minions, who know your hopes and dreams. They know your favourite characters. They know what you're dreading. So don't confirm any of these things when you comment, even if you make sure not to get too specific. If you love the book, tell me. If you hate the book, tell me that too. But keep in mind that other people will be reading, and if you give away what kind of ending the book has, you've just cheated them out of finding out for themselves.
I love your enthusiasm. Your enthusiasm makes these books what they are. So while you're being considerate of your friends, be sure to revel in your enthusiasm, and your excitement, and your dread, and your horror, and your happiness and your despair.

*He looked at the girl and raised an eyebrow*

*He took her shoulder an pulled her after him as he made his way for the door*

*punches the guy square in the face before lashing a kick into his side and firing an elbow into his jaw*
*She cried out and tried to pull away, but his grip was too tight*

*He ducked the punch to the face, skirted to the side to avoid the kick and ducked again*

*She tried to glare up at him but she couldn't get a clear shot. She was being towed backwards and with her heels, it was going to be disastrous*

*His grip on Rose tightened, making the girl scream in pain. He didn't care, not at that moment. He would regret it for a long time later, he knew, but right now, he just wanted Rose all to himself*
*She almost started to cry at the pain. Her bones quivered as they tried to stay intact*

(Hmm. Maybe Chow Mein IS soap, and soap is secretly Chow Mein flavoured. :) Maybe they have a deal. "You'll sponser me, and I'll advertise your flavour.")

*moves as a blur, faster than a human could, and sends a flurry of punches at Diablo, some for his throat and jaw, many at his face, one or two at his stomach and groin*
*He cursed under the blows and let go of Rose, stumbling backwards*

Sophia: Has anything interesting happened to you recently?
*grabs Roses hand and pulls her away from Diablo*
I shall assume I cannot rp with Rose.
Manuel: i danced with a commander. But thats about it.
Rose: *She followed Sil gratefully and stood a little bit behind her*
Rose: Diablo, I told you not to ever come back...
Diablo: *With a hand to his jaw, he shook his head*
Diablo: I needed to see you...
Rose: Why?!
Diablo: Because I missed you.

Sophia: That's what counts as interesting these days?
Boo hoo. Get a grip. Move on.
Manuel: In my eyes, yes.
(Loki, she screamed a few moments ago. You could have heard that if you're looking for a way to find them.)
I do not see how I can.
Sophia: I am not that good at dancing.
Manuel: you remember the steps you were taught. You just need practice.
Diablo: *He shook his head again, his eyes intent on Rose's*
Diablo: No... I can't move on... Not after-
Rose: After you tricked me?! After you kidnapped my little brother in a desperate attempt to bring me to you?! You're a psycho! Get away!
Sigh. My author may fall back asleep.
*stalks out of his room towards Rose's scream, annoyed that he can't recover from a near death situation without her getting hurt*
*her eyes harden*
Listen idiot. You're crazy. Go away. Leave Rose alone. Don't make Loki beat the shit out of you.
(Understood.)
*Rose looked behind her as she heard his footsteps. She ran out of the room and towards Loki, wrapping her arms tightly around him*
Rose: Please... Make him leave!!
*Diablo stared after her, catching a glimpse of black and a flash of green*
*Diablo's eyes turned to the woman and he smiled at her*
Diablo: I shall not leave. And I do not know who this Loki is, but I am not going to leave her side.
*He eyed the door*
Diablo: May I pass?
*listens to Rose leave and blocks the door after her*
Sophia: Right. But I have no intentions of practicing.
No. You shall not pass.
*forces herself not to laugh at the quote*
Leave her alone.
Manuel: Very well then. You are good ay dancing, you could be better but your current ability level is not bad.
*keeps Rose close with one hand, firing the sceptre at Diablo with the other* Leave, before this gets to be a bloodbath.
*Diablo shook his head at Silente and forced her way past her. He cried out as he dodged to blast. Jealousy filled his core when she saw Rose and the man*
Diablo: Give her back to me.
*Rose cowered into Loki's chest, the sound of Diablo's voice making her whimper*
Rose: Go away already!!
Sophia: Not bad at dancing is something I'll go with. I'm a soldier, not a ballroom dancer.
*he saw
(I hope you realise the only way he'd have got past Sil would be to have knocked her out.)
Manuel: Indeed you are.
(He just pushed past. He's insanely strong. Almost Mr Bliss strong. He can take quite a hit and break Sil's arm without even trying to get past.)
Sophia: It is something I wouldn't need.
*quietly to Rose* Stay where you end up. *makes her vanish and appear with Frigga* I have no intentions of giving Rose away, she is mine. *fires sceptre at him again*
(Forget the 'to get past' bit at the end.)
(Ah. Fine.)
Oi weasle!
*turns, fuming, and lunges at him, grabbing his arm and wrenching it back, twisting it at the same time, which should be hard enough to send him to his knees*
Manuel: I can imagine it wouldn't be required in your line of work.
(I got TDOTL for about £3.50.)
*Rose nodded and closed her eyes tightly. She cracked one open when she realised that she wasn't dying. Or falling. She saw Frigga and ran over to hug her tightly*
*Diablo's nostrils flared and his eyes burned with rage. He ducked the sceptre blast and moved in close*
Diablo: No... She's mine. She will always be mine!
*He started to throw elbows and knees and kicks and punches as hard as he could at the man*
Sophia: Nope. I'm not likely to start dancing whilst being shot at.
What kind of problems are most common for you in your job?
*Diablo cursed at the woman and shook his arm out of her grasp. He turned briefly to send a heavy punch and a sneaky sweep to her ankles, before he turned back to the man, growling*
(Draggie... How is that possible...?)
Manuel: ..resistance. Mental resistance mainly. It can cause a lot of problems. It can also cause great pain to me.
(Rose - vouchers. :D)
Sophia: I'm not sure I understand. Why would metal resistance affect you?
(I'm almost in pain, Dragona...
But mum brought mine... So I can't really complain!)
*grabs Diablo by the neck, throwinv him into a wall* You really want to annoy me? You are stupid if you do not know my name.
Frigga: Hi...*hugs her back* Loki's doing.
*Leif wakes up and starts whacking Kari with his toy*
*throws herself backwards to avoid the punch, rolling to her feet*
*leaps forwards at him, clinging to his back and wrapping and arm around his throat, pulling it tight with her other arm*
(Rose um... Oops. Sorry. :P)
Manuel: they fight against me. I try to mentally help then by joining mentally with them, searching for the problem, soothing it. When they resist...it can be extremely painful.
*Rose shook her head, paused, then nodded*
Rose: Not really... There's a person downstairs... He's mean... He's come and I don't want him here and he won't leave... He grabbed me really hard... My shoulder's on fire...
*He hit the wall but got up quickly. He muttered something when he felt the arms around his neck. He reached up and squeezed her arms, shattering the bones*
Diablo: Stay out of this! And I don't need to know your name! I only need her!
Sophia: I can imagine. Does your mind get attacked or is it the actual resistance hurt? A bit like running into a wall of swords?
(It's okay, Dragona. I don't want to read it, anyway. I hate endings.)
*screams when her arms shatter and falls off his back*
*gets up, fuming, and sends a kick for the back of his knees hard enough to shatter bones*
Manuel: Both.
Sophia: So can you fight back?
*Diablo took the kicks to the backs of his knees easily. She turned, took the woman's broken arm, and swung her into the man*
Manuel: I could. However that isn't very helpful for the patient.
*He turned
*screams and crashes into Loki*
*groans and rolls back to her feet, her breathing unsteady*
Sorry Loki...
*glares at Diablo*
Go. To. HELL!
Sophia: Well, if I were you I'd reinforce the hell out of my mind and let them run into a wall of swords instead. That way they'd be tempted to stop, or not to start in the first place.
Manuel: *laughs* yes that probably would be a good idea.
*It seemed like the words hadn't even been uttered to Diablo. He looked at Loki, unamused*
Diablo: Where is she? Then I will leave with her on my arm.
Move. *takes out the casket, aimed at Diablo to encase him in ice* *his skin is now blue, eyes red*
Frigga: I can call for a healer. Leif stop hitting your sister!
Sophia: Is that even possible?
Manuel: I could reinforce my mind yes. However I don't know how that would effect my abilities.
*looks at Loki and backs up slightly*
*He took a step back when the man's skin and eyes started to change colour, then mentally cursed him as his body froze*
*Rose laughed quietly and nodded. She turned her head slightly to look at Leif*
Rose: If... If it's not too much to ask... And he's a violent little one...
Sophia: Every defence has gaps. Use them.

Frigga: *goes out of the room, coming back with Astrid*
Astrid: Rose.,.you're a mess. *touches her shoulder* Feel better?
Stupid man. *puts the casket away, his skin and eyes will turn back to normal* *touches the ice, vanishing and appearing by the Bifrost* Heimdall, can you send this to Svartlfheim?
Heimdall: I can.
*appears back by Silente*
Sophia: It depends which defence you mean. The one on my ship?
*looks at her arm, judging the damage*
*glares at it*
I'm going to need a cast. Ugh.
*pulls the ribbon keeping her hair up out, using it to secure her arm at her side temporarily*

*Rose smiled and nodded at Astrid as her shoulder stopped aching*
Rose: Yes... Thank you...
*She pulled her into a tight hug, hiding her face*
*Diablo made a sound of protest at the back of his throat and tried to warm up his body, trying to defrost himself*
Manuel: No. I do not mean that defense. I mean your defense. The one you use to shut yourself off from others.
Sophia: *sighs* I don't want to answer that.
Astrid: Calm down....
Heimdall: *quickly opens the Bifrost, sending Diablo to the Dark Elve's realm*
I can ask a healer to heal you, vampire.
Manuel: Very well. I won't push you.
That'd be helpful. Thank you. Sorry for being thrown into you. You should probably go check on Rose...
*She slowly pulled herself away from Astrid and looked at the floor*
Rose: I... I'm sorry... I'm just a little upset...
*Diablo felt nauseous as he traveled and looked around when he stopped. Where was he...?*

Sophia: I hate giving information about myself.

*She saw Loki and leaped towards him, holding onto his shirt tightly. She kissed his chest, happy that he wasn't hurt*
*shrugs and walks into the ball room arm still tied to her side*
*looks at Zaf, then at Manuel and Sophia, and just sits in a chair somewhere*
Sophia: Good. *ponders for a moment*
Manuel: *watches Sophia*
*looks away, presuming she doesnt want to be watched*
Hello, Rose. *smirks* Do you remember my mother is here?
Sophia: On a scale of one to very drunk, how intoxicated do you think I am?
*She nodded, her lips not leaving his chest*

Manuel: well despite very drunk not being a number i would say around about six. Maybe seven.
*gets up and moves closer to where Zaf is*

Manuel: I'm afraid telling you would involve compliments. And I doubt you are drunk enough to accept them.

Also to being the glue. Not in the band sense, but in the more literal sense. The holding people together sense. The real life sense. The band is great but holding people together and being the glue is good. And important. And stressful too..)

Manuel: *smiles slightly* that would only be one of many aspects. Just because you can't see them or deny them does not mean they are not there.

Manuel: I could be. *spins her again* although I highly doubt it. If I was I wouldn't be a very good psychiatrist would I?
(Star - Lol. It's actually quite important. Because in Mass Effect 3 - every race (well, if you manage to get every race) in the galaxy is united together. And the only thing they actually have in common is Shepard. It's like common ground, you know? The ONLY common ground. You have races which have been at war - races which have effectively sterilised an entire race. Races which continue to hate each other even during the Reaper invasion. And they're working TOGETHER.)
Sophia: Probably not. Although insane people can take refuge with other insane people.

Manuel: I prefer not to view myself as insane. In my opinion I am sane. Then again who says the insane know of their state?
*dips Sophia low before bringing her back up and resuming the dancing*
Sophia: *loses her balance a little but manages to stay upright*

Manuel: Nor do I. Not on that subject matter anyway. *keeps her balanced as best he can*
Sophia: You're supposed to be a psychiatrist. Isn't that part of your job?
Manuel: My job is to help them. Simple questions such as 'Do you think you're insane' are not usually asked.
Sophia: Then no wonder nobody knows. People should ask once in a while. Knowing is better than not knowing.
Manuel: Yes. It is.
*frowns slightly at hee before his face quickly goes back to its neutral look*

What's been your most interesting case before?
Sophia: Case? Do you mean as a Spectre?
Manuel: I do.
Sophia: *sighs* Define interesting.
Manuel: The strangest maybe. Or the most irritating. Whichever you see as most interesting.
Sophia: *thinks*

Sophia: Right. For the weirdest, definitely the time when I had to fight my way through Reaper ground forces in the pitch black. There was an indoctrination device on the top floor in a building, and it was heavily defended. I only had a small beam of light from my computer to help me see, otherwise I couldn't see a hand in front of my face. It was the darkest place I've ever been in. Or do you mean amusing weird?
(Sorry I kind of poofed. :P)
Manuel: That sounds rather scary. Clearly you are skilled at your job in order to survive it. And I means any type of weird. Most irritating?
*spins her out again*
Sophia: Irritating... Hm. There was a criminal organisation on the Citadel - which is basically the political hub of the galaxy. They built an AI and attempted to release it into the security systems. I had been told about it by another Spectre - we were working together. It wasn't exactly a good time. He was too busy telling me how to do my job. Which led to the gang realising that we were hunting them down. So they took a few people hostage and set themselves up inside an office. They began to upload the AI and it was a race of time to try and get there. The other Spectre just got in the way. I knew I could track their location through the security systems, but he wouldn't allow me access. Bastard. So we had to do it the slow way. Which led to the death of the hostages.
Manuel: Oh. The other Spectre must not have been very smart...and now you're a solo Spectre?
Sophia: I work alone. That way there is no one to slow me down. If I had been working alone on that mission, there would have been no casualties but the gang in question. The way we ended up doing it, the AI was nearly uploaded, the hostages were killed and so were the gang members. It pissed me off.
Who has been your weirdest patient?

Manuel: *smiles* Hmm. That's a very hard question to answer...there was once a person who suffered from night terrors. Except every time he had a nightmare the patient in question would change more. You see the nightmares always involved a monster and the patient was slowly turning into that monster. When he was brought to me he was already half changed. I must say the mind of a half beast half man is not a nice place to venture.

Manuel: irritating? The time they brought another sensitive to me. Took me almost a week to even get into her head. And when I did there was very little to fix but a lot of attacks. Or possibly miss tempest. She is quite and irritating case..

Sophia: I've killed her quite a few times.

Manuel: I know you have. Me and miss tempest have weekly sessions. Not that she remembers these.
