I cannot BELIEVE they've let me use that title!
Ladies and gentlemen, the collection I've been promising you, the book that scoops up all those little short stories and provides you with some brand new ones, has been unleashed. There won't be a Spoiler Zone post because it's not one of the "book" books, but even so, try to limit the amount you give away about the endings.
Of the new stories included, I'm finding it hard to pick a favourite. The Horror Writers' Halloween Ball is the most out-and-out comedy of the lot, but Across A Dark Plain is a WESTERN, for god's sake, and it was SO much fun changing my writing style slightly to convey that mood.
But I think Get Thee Behind Me, Bubba Moon is probably my favourite. Much like The End of the World (which is also collected here), it's told from the point of view of an outsider, in this case a middle-aged American man. I didn't mean it to be quite so long, but it grew from a short story to a novella before I knew what was happening. The tone of this one is different, too — until a certain pair of intrepid detectives wander in with their bickering and their jokes...
Anyway, I hope you like it. I hope you ALSO like the sample chapter from The Dying of the Light. It is VERY well written, if I do say so myself.
Oh, and speaking of TDOTL, tomorrow I shall be revealing an awesomely cool limited edition alternative cover.
And it ROCKS.

Zafira: Loki. Now, do you want to kick James's butt or not? I'm pretty sure Zanida wants him dead too, and Loki does as well, I don't know how willing he will be to fight.

... Why did you bring Loki back to life? The man is a bosh'tet. He preys on the weak and is too afraid to stand up to the stronger people and instead chooses to hit them with weak jibes. I'm not the kind of person who gets angry. Or fights. I never want to kill anyone. But I definitely wouldn't bring him back to life.
Basically a filibuster is when you talk until you can't stand in order to prevent something.
James: *smashes an air wall into Elleni*
*whips away her oxygen*
*his suit erupts in six-inch spikes*
*blurs the distance to James and headbutts him*
James: *laughs*
Zafira: *whips shadows at James face* Back off.
*The two Asgardians appear, and Zanida's flaming lance is now heading toward James throat*
James: *shoves Vivanus away*
*uses the air to throw him back 10 metres*
*spikes dig into the ground, slowing him down*
Runs back at James, forming a steel pike in his hands*
James: *releases his hold on Elleni and teleports back*
*uses his own shadows to stab Zaf in the leg*
*shoves the point into James' shoulder*
*taps a sigil on his bicep*
*Jag appears*
James: *roars in pain and teleports backwards again taking Viv with him*
*uses air to push Viv 50 metres away*
Jag: Hello Ugly.
*points at James*
I was talking to you.
*rushes to Elleni's side*
Are you okay?
*watches Viv*
Zafira: *screeches, and shadow-walks after James, sending shadow knives at him*
Zanida: *makes an ice shard form in her hand, and runs after James, and lunges at him, shard at his throat
James: Says you.
*looks jag up and down*
Hmm.
*struggles to get up*
Jag: *clicks his fingers, summoning a fire ball*
Ready to burn?
*sends a fiery gust of air into James' direction and charges*
James: *punches Zanida in the face*
*roars as the knives hit*
*sends shadows flying for Saga fave*
Zanida: *catches his fist, and crushes it, and using free hand again aims shard at his throat*
Viv: *rolls to his feet*
Jag: you can't hurt me so give up James.
(*Zafs *face)
James: *grimaces at the fiery air*
*teleports and trips Jag up*
James: *stops*
*smiles at Zanida*
Well done.
*stares*
*grabs James by the arm*
*snaps it*
(That was Viv. He snuck up behind)
James: *roars and backhands Viv*
*teleports taking Zanida with him*
*uses the air to throw her back*
*teleports behind Silente and grabs a knife of hers*

*elbows him in the side and kicks him away*
James: *growls and throws the knife at Elleni*
*Comes smashing in*

Zanida: *grabs Jame's and quickly focuses on encasing his body in ice*

Zafira: *goes over to Viv* I can heal him, or revive him.

*turns him onto his back*

James: *laughs despite his blueing lips*
*slams a head back into Jags face*

*physical attacks don't faze Jag in the slightest*
*convulsions start*

*bones start cracking and realigning*

James: *struggles against the ice*
James: *invades Jag's mind and fills it with images of his wife and children dieing*
(Just a note on Jag. Physically he is impenetrable. He isn't hurt by anything, however he is not invulnerable. Alistair could kill him in a second. He has a weak immune system due to needles not being able to enter his body. Likewise, poison is extremely effective on him.)
Jag: *bellows and crushes James' windpipe*
(Uh....windpipe crushed.....does that equal death? How long would it take for that to kill you)
(Instant knockout...thirty second death?
*looks around and begins to back away*
Zanida: He's frozen...
(Okay.)
(Whats happening to Viv.)
James: *falls unconscious*
*his body quickly sets about healing him, at the cost of a lot of his energy*
(James actually knocked a spike into Viv's stomach)
(Jag's arm was still around James' throat)
(Oh...that's bad.)
Viv please what's happening!
*looks at Zaf*
Help!
James: *is apparently frozen*
(trying to find the right moment to intervene)
James: *doesn't react because he can't move*
*his body slows its healing*
*spits up blood*
*eyes flutter*
*slowly moves forward with shotgun drawn*

*looks around*

Zafira: *places hand on Viv and starts to heal him, focusing on the times Niccolò has healed me*

James: *yells at the wolf and his wrist*
*smashes a fist into the wolfs side, clutching his own*
*heals his wrist and pushes at the air, throwing Elleni away*

James: *manipulates Elleni's flames, sending them up her arm*
*opens his eyes*

*sees Sil's face*

Zafira: He should be fine *sounds slightly out of breath*

James: *stumbles forwards*
*turns and throws Jag 10 metres into the air*
*throws a fire ball like a bullet after him*
James: *grabs the wolf's scruff and twists*
*makes a wall of air around him and Inky*
*activates her computer, which ionises the air and then fires a bolt of electricity at James*
Jag: *breaks the air wall*
*returns the fireball*
James: *jerks randomly and is hit by the fireball*
*yells and shadows smother the flames*
*frowns, not that anyone could see because of the helmet* *sighs, then goes and sits in the forest, leaning against a tree*
Why shoot me?! I'm helping you out!! *fires the sceptre at James again*
Zanida: *runs at James and embeds an ice shard in her*

James: *starts felling pressure on him*
*sees Elleni manipulating it*
*sends shadows at her legs*

*reaches up and strokes Silente's cheek*

The Dark Shadow: *shadows swirl and begin to knot together to form its body*
*walks to stand at El's side*
James: *stares at Silente*
*smiles slowly and whips away everyone else's oxygen*
The Dark Shadow: Jamesssssss... I give you one chanceeeeeee... only oneeeeee...
I will takeeeeee you awayyyyy from thissssssss... Give you powerrrrrr...
*stumbles*
James: *smashes a foot into Elleni's side*
*is choking as well*
James: *towers over Elleni and Silente*
*smiles*
*it appears Zanida and Loki are out cold*
*appears behind James and wraps an arm around his neck*

James: *looks at the dark shadow*

*slides free a sword slowly, silently*
James: *uses air to send the sword flying*
*refuses to kneel before James*
*sways on her feet*
James: *elbows Loki in the jaw hard enough to break the bone*
*Falls unconscious*

James: *smiles watching Elleni and Silente choking*

*James finds he only hits the helmet* Try again. Release Silente and Elleni, you cannot hurt two gods.
James: Generous? Generosity doesn't seem like your style...
James: No but I can hurt them Loki.
*watches Elleni turning blue*

The Dark Shadow: *flits to beside Loki* Nooo... but I cannnnnnn *sends a lot of sharpened shadows at him*
