@Elleni: The reason my mum wants me to go to a normal school instead of a private school is because she wants me to learn how to deal with lots of different types of people, as in life I will have to work with lots of different types of people. She says this is just as important as getting a good education.
I have to admit that this is probably true, but I accept it rather relunctantly, because I like education, plus I'm academically clever and this ill will sound rather mean but I don't like people holding me back. :P
I think whether the method works or not largely depends on the students. I'm always happy to be work-focused, although I'm not always happy to help . . . I mean, I don't like just giving peopel the answers, because then they just copy them down with no brainwork, and it never seems fair to me that I worked to find it out and they just get given it.
(I mean, the entire education system isn't fair, but I've had my dislike of helping people all my lfie and when I was in primary school I didn't know it wasn't fair. :P)
In French on Monday the people who were doing the assessment got paired up with peopel who weren't, and the people who weren't were meant to help out the people who were. I got paired up with two girls who I like (I'm not sure they like me, though, although they tolerate me), and it partially worked because I did ask them for help and they did help me out and that was useful. HOWEVER, I spent the vast majority of the lesson working on my own in silence whilst they sat and chatted (which was kind of interesting; I like eavesdropping on people's conversations, because it gives me insights into how the rest of society lives their lives).
But anyway, rambling now . . . yeah. I did askt hem for help, and thye were happy to help, and if I'd needed more help than I did, they would have been happy to help me. But they're generally rather work-focused people, and the thing is, the A grade people, and the B grade, tend to be more likely to want to get the work done than the D grade people. (TEND to be - I DO realise that I am stereotyping here. I've sat with plenty of A and B grade people hwo are happy to sit and chat all lesson, and I'm pretty sure my friend F wants to get the work done despite not having good grades).
So yes. People who would help the lower grade people don't because the lower grade people don't want to be helped, which doesn't improve their grades.
Also, as previously mentioned, A grade people get irritated being slowed down and would rather just get the work done.
Plus, as you mentioned, the A grade people resort to doing all the work and letting the others take the credit out of a desire for their grade not to suffer.
Basically - students have a tendency to be selfish little shits who don't care. The teachers can do whatever they want for us, and make the lesson as interesting as possible, and use all the fancy teaching techniques in their arsenal, but unless the students want to put their best effort in to work and/or help, we won't get very far.

I feel sorry for teachers . . . they're fighting a losing battle. :/
