Well, "finished" is maybe the wrong word. There are still two short chapters to write — detailing Scapegrace's little adventure - but basically, essentially, that's it. I'm done. I've just sent the official first draft of The Dying of the Light over to Nick, my editor, and Michelle, my agent. They've both read a rough version a few weeks ago so I know there's not going to be much in the way of changes when I start editing next week. Which is a relief. And word count, you ask? Word count?
Well, at the moment, before the edit and missing two little chapters, the word count stands at 153,193. I can't find the exact count, but I think LSODM was about 161,000, so it'll be pretty close in size. I genuinely thought this would be a much smaller book, closer to Dark Days in terms of length. My editor, however, knew the word count would just explode once I started to do what I planned. The book is, he has told me, "hugely ambitious". So there's that.
And I'm glad it's taken me this long to write it, to be honest. I'm glad TDOTL is going to be a heavy, substantial book. It is the end, after all. It deserves to be weighty.
It has still to hit me, by the way. The fact that this IS the end. I think when the edit is finished it'll occur to me that there'll be no more Skulduggery books. Not exactly looking forward to that moment.
On a cheerier note, I've seen Tom Percival's rough sketch of the cover, and it will literally KILL YOU with feels.
Which, now that I think of it, probably isn't a cheerier note at all.
We have such cool ideas for the coming year, plenty of AMAZING events to announce, and I can't wait to let you all in on what we're planning. The next two days, in fact, I will be spending in a massive meeting about those very same events.
The Year of the Requiem is gonna ROCK.

Recently, Hunter's been telling me I'm pathetic, and I didn't realise but this thought seeped deeply into my brain and before I knew it I was subconsciously thinking I was pathetic and I couldn't do things, all the time.
Which was really very interesting.
I was writing out words without actually making a mark in order to talk to myself on the back of a test paper today for fifteen minutes (so fun - I need to talk to myself more often), and realised - I'm unstoppable.
I can do anything I want.
All I have to do is realise it.
And I shouldn't ever, ever give up, because if I don't . . . I'll get there one day.
Maybe it'll take seven and a half hours straight of fiddling, or maybe it will take me an entire week to write and then seven hours to memorise, but I can do things.
And if you think you can't . . .
You shouldn't ever think you can't.
So I suppose what motivates me to continue is the fact that I CAN motivate myself to continue.
Everyone can. :)
And will you look at that? A few days determinedly telling myself I'm not pathetic, and look what happens to my self-esteem. XD

Pets are loving. Yesterday I came home and Coco licked me and licked me until it was time to go back in the cage. He really was showing his affection, and I kissed his head and he licked my cheek. It was so cute because for a tiny little gerbil, he kept showing me, his human, his love.
Prompt: Write about a time you hid from someone.
Usually, I associate hiding with guilt and anxiety, and I don't feel like writing about that, to be frank. So I'm going to write about a time when I actually learned something from hiding. No, several times when I learned something from hiding. Both times, of course, the hiding came after running away. I'm too good at hunting to avoid being hunted, so I found myself chased down by packs. And I'm always fast enough to get away, but never have the breath to keep running, so the real trick for me is to find a good hiding place. The kind people will walk right past or even peer into without seeing you. Once, I curled behind a desk in the corner of a classroom, trying to force my heavy breaths to calm down. There was a teacher in the corner I hadn't cared about when I came in- a substitute, just watching the room. I didn't know her. She asked if I was okay, and I cast her a wary smile in response. I told her I was hiding, and she told me that she used to hide a lot in high school, too. She looked at me with complete understanding of something I couldn't quite get. Then she turned back to her papers, and I counted the sseconds between each breath I took, and we didn't speak to each other again. I didn't think she was talking about snitch hunt when she said she used to hide. I was doubtful of hide and seek, too, because even if she had played that in high school, it wouldn't have warranted the reassurance in her face. I wondered what she was hiding from. I still wonder. Another time I was being chased, and ran out of breath, as usual, I took the closest refuge I could think to take- the small space between a door and a wall. I broke their magnetic bond to slip through the cracks, and found that they couldn't quite reunite with me between them, so I held the door open as far as I could without the magnet to support it. And at some point I realized that from my perspective, the door was about as closed as it could possibly be. And that if I opened it, from my perspective, it would

be closedc to the people in the hallway, coming after me. And just like that, everything that a door is changed forever. A door is a rectangular prism that hinges at some point. The frame is only there to hold it in a certain place. But it isn't really a thing that closes or opens. It turns, on its hinges, and is usually rested in one place or another, but whether or not it's closed only depends on where you're standing, and how you see it. Which does seem like a rather cliched metaphorical revelation, I suppose, but I don't really feel like it is. Because to me, it wasn't symbolic of a glass-half-full-half-empty sort of thing. I mean, it was, but I think that way about most things, so it might not have been worth writing down for that alone. Metaphorical value didn't make it signifigant. It's the fact that every time I see a door now, I don't see it in its frame. I see it as a shape in the midst of a great plane of nothing, twirling on its hinges in an empty void. It is always and never open and closed. I don't know if that means anything, and I don't know if I care whether it means anything, anyway. I don't know anything at all, really. But I think that I know that I will never see a door the way I used to, and I think that I know that I like that, because sometimes we stop seeing things we look at everyday, and I can see all the doors now. They mean something, or at the very least, they interest me, and I think I know that it'd be quite a shame if everyday things weren't interesting to me. I was told that I'm an optimist in a non-annoying way, and if I am, it must be because I can't go through a day without being excited by or interested in something. Because I love the ripples raindrops make in puddles on the pavement, and the imperfections in the glaze over the tiles I'm sitting on catch my attention. I look for colors in the cracks between the pages of the books I read, and I marvel at the obscene abount of things I can fit into my pencil case every time I struggle to zip it. And when I look at a door, my mind leaps into a flat, black realm where it's not held in place or defined by its threshold. There are flecks of salmon in my desk.

And the reason why I spent about twenty minutes transposing that from my writer's notebook onto this blog is because simple things do matter. They matter immensely. Do you know what the ceilings in your school are made of? I do. In every hallway, in every classroom I've been in. Because one day I realized that I didn't know, because I never looked up, and I thought it was terrible that all I ever did was walk in a line staring straight ahead or at the floor. I pay attention to every little detail that catches my eye, and I treat everyday things like they're the most interesting things in the world, because otherwise I'll undervalue them. I shouldn't be ignoring something I might otherwise be enjoying just because I look at it every day. When people stand in the light, individual strands of their hair gleam like flecks of gold. Every time I look at a corner I try to see if I can find a spiderweb in it. And I don't even like spiders. I'm staring out the window right now at my neighbor's house, and they have a brick chimney, and all the bricks are slightly different shades, and they're crumbling around the edges. I find that if you just let yourself be interested in the small things that are around you all the time, every day, even when you close your eyes, life seems a lot more exciting. Even if you have to force yourself to look at things differently, I think it's worth it. Because I'd love to change the world, but I'd be disappointed if I only ever had a grandiose dream to look forward to. Every day has its merits, every quark that makes up the universe is doing something really, really interesting, and I think it'd be a disservice to me, and also the entirety of the rest of this world, if I dismissed it just because it was all around me. If I never took the time to look at it.

*She's just finished swimming for a few hours on the beach in Tahiti, and climbs from the water, wrapping a towel around her, wringing her hair out as she heads back up to the large and open beach house* *Hums as she goes along, sand sticking to the bottom of her feet- people say you shouldn't swim after eating, but she's fine with it*
*Enters quietly into the house, wiping her feet off as she takes a quick shower before nestling down on the couch with her snake, Lazarus*

And no, Jazlyn. She isn't. Adra is a good person, but she's unbalanced. For all intents and purposes, you could call her evil at the moment, as long as you remember that she isn't typically this way. Although, that is, that doesn't mean that she's any different. Well, she is.

Oh and Jazz- her 'evil' thing is actually just ways for attention. If you ignore it, you keep your dinner inside, if you read it, have a bucket nearby. Forewarning.
You'll simply either die, or be disturbed. So I guess pointless is better. Its not worth it, trust me. I mean...its nasty, eating people? She just EATS people. Its like Black Annis though her skin isn't blue.

It may be, but for her its her way of seeking attention. She left and instead of just going along she went 'evil' and people obsess over her, but people who were here whilst she left get sort of booted. Like you're here but all they talk about is her.
*She ties her hair back after a while, and goes to her wardrobe, picking out a pair of trousers and a loose shirt* *She flips through a travel book, and makes a little portal through to Dublin, walking out into an alley* *She spots a bar across the street, and makes her way across, going in quietly*
She doesn't deserve respect, Jazz. Whenever she's on with Alastair, if you try and join in, you get booted. Its either her way or no way. I was doing something on Sunday to try to find Alastair, and the stars alligned that it would work, I knew I'd loose, she left me hangjng and instead of normal people going with it and combining our two efforts, she simply left. Flat out left me, and its reqlly upsetting when you try stuff and you get booted.
