Apparently I'll be appearing at the Imagine Festival in London this Monday, the 17th. I had a blast last year, where I showed clips from movies, but I'm not entirely sure what I'll do this time. I might read from one of the new short stories. I'd read from the ninth book, but there is nothing from the early sections finished, and anything read from later on would be a spoiler, so...
Oh, and speaking of Book 9, I have just reached the 75,000 word mark. Judging by this, the finished book will be at least 100,000 words, which is Mortal Coil length, and could be longer. LSODM will stay the longest, I reckon, simply because of the massive amount of characters involved. But because most of those characters are now DEAD, Book 9 allows me a smaller, more intimate story — while remaining as heart-rendingly traumatic as anything I've written before.
And speaking of heart-rendingly traumatic, I've actually written the last few chapters. Not to completion, of course, but I've written enough to know what happens, and how it ends, and who lives and who dies, and all I can say is...
I am MEAN.

I used to be more like Anni. I lived to kill other people with suspense. And I was good at it, too- better than I am now. But that was back when I created and developed characters as plot devices, making all their decisions for the sake of heightening drama. They were my puppets. Veracruz came from that time, which is part of why her personality seems so disjointed and difficult to work with here. But the characters started to take over. I think it was a more than fair trade, personally.))

and I sort of got the impression that Aretha had the whole of Blogland under her power, because she had Niccolo,
and it seemed like most of Blogland revolved around Niccolo, and still does.
I hold an enormous amount of respect for Aretha, and her writing is some of my favorite in all of Blogland,

That's not the way to portray it.
I mean, I have, in the past, felt that someone was stealing my place as a storyteller, and I mean this in a different way to the circumstance which we're talking about, but the impact was sort of the same, and no one is ever replaceable and all writing is good in different ways, and also, if wonderful writing gets written . . . then it's good that it exists.
You know in Toy Story?
And Woody says "No one is getting replaced."
And then he feels he does get replaced.
But think about the movie - if Buzz hadn't been there, the movie would have no interesting storyline. And if Woody hadn't been there, the movie would have no interesting storyline. And they're both equally important. And Woody may feel he's not in the position he once was, but he's adapted a new role, and that one could be even better. Buzz, too - he thinks he's a failure because he's not the real Buzz Lightyear, only a toy, but then Woody says "Are you kidding? Being a toy is the best thing you can be!" and tells him how awesome he is and Buzz realises that he is, in actual fact, awesome.

Urgh.
I'm sure this failure to internalise my thoughts has had an effect on my English abilities. :/

I do not write fan fiction, as a rule. I just don't enjoy it. But recently I got roped into writing one for a Minion friend of mine, and I wanted to show it to you people to see what you think. It's not done yet, but I've got the first part finished, and I would really love an opinion on it. There are no spoilers in it. It's based off something Sanguine said in book two, about having been a PI once, and the only murder he solved was one that he'd committed.
But for the assessment, I can start writing, discover where I'm going, go back and edit and go there, and then have it all written, so I'm good. :)

Hello. The name’s Billy-Ray Sanguine. I’m a PI. It says so on my door.
It started on a rainy day in Texas. Nuthin’ outside but heat n’ wet. A bad day t’ be out on the town. ‘Course that means the blood gets washed away real clean. Straight down in the gutter. Nobody has t’ know a thing.
He was an Italian sorcerer, and a purdy rich ‘un. Got himself a fancy estate outsida Houston. ‘Course I didn’t know about none o’ this, when I killed him. I was just strollin’ down the sidewalk blowin’ steam off my cappuccino, and next thing I knew I had the man pinned to the wall o’ a dark alley nearby.
I enjoyed the killin’. Then, I always do. Rammed him up against the wall, sealed his hands inside it so he couldn’t run, and bled him till he was beggin’ for mercy. He didn’t even try to use magic. Pathetic.
I remembered the kill ‘cause I got so into it that my ol’ Bowie knife scraped bone one too many times. Tip snapped off, and the rest was duller than a zombie’s wit. Useless. I left it in the sorcerer’s kidneys and went the underground route back t’ my office. Wouldn’t do to be walkin’ down the street all soaked in blood. Didn’t matter how much I loved the feelin’ of blood slowly dryin’ on my skin. Wouldn’t do t’ have civvies see me lookin’ like that.
Got back t’ the office, showered up, and took t’ starin’ out the window like I of’n did. Sure, detectin’ was good in it’s own right. All the glitz n’ glam n’ fast-talkin’. But not one o’ my clients didn’t end up kickin’ the bucket, so I was startin’ to ponder givin’ up the business fer good.
Then the hottest lil’ darlin’ I ever did see came strollin’ through my door, and I gave up on all that.
She was stunnin’ in her genuine mink coat. Long black hair goin’ all the way down to her rear. A waist I could’ve put my hands on n’ had my fingers meet on the other side. ‘N don’t get me started on her eyes; real calm n’ gray they were, like the sea after a storm. Roilin’ and tossin’ in the bay, kickin’ up foamy white spray . . .
What was I talkin’ about?
Oh yeah, the broad. She was cute.
“You lookin’ to put out a hit?” I asked, straightenin’ my Ray-Bans.
She raised a perfect eyebrow. “A hit?”
I coulda kicked myself. Me an’ my big mouth. “I meant are you lookin’ fer me t’ solve a mystery? Some guy get rubbed out? Husband maybe?” I asked hopefully. “Boyfriend?”
“My brother.” She said, and her perfect eyes started wellin’ up with tears. “My brother, he’s-” And then she collapsed into sobs.
I start automatically doing it Silent-eh . . . :P Even though I'm sure I once decided it was Silent.

We stood that way fer maybe ten minutes, her sobbin’ her dear li’ heart out and me scratchin’ the back of my head wonderin’ was t’ do when a dame breaks down in my office.
“Um . . .” I said. And then again; “Um . . .”
She sniffled and sat down on a stool. Her mascara was runnin’. It detracted a lil’ from her cuteness. Not much. “I . . . hic . . . I’m sorry . . .”
“Um . . . s’all right?” I ventured, removin’ my Ray-Bans.
She wiped her eyes and looked up at me plaintively. She saw my face clearly fer the first time, and collapsed into tears once again.
Dangit.
The Ray-Bans.
“Sorry!” I gasped, puttin’ my sunglasses back on. “Sorry, I-”
“Wh-what happened to y-you . . .” She sobbed.
Seriously, some dames don’t have no manners. You’d think I was the first eyeless fella’ she’d ever seen.
“I scooped my eyes out o’ my head.” I explained. “Y’know, like y’do.”
Y’know, I wish for once, just once, people wouldn’t notice those big-ass holes in my head. I mean, yeah, I ain’t got eyes, but once you get past that, you got my face. And my face ain’t bad. None of the dames thought so ‘fore I popped my eyes out.
“Sh-shouldn’t you be asking me some questions?”
“Questions . . . questions . . . oh yeah! Right! Questions!” I stuttered, rememberin’ jist in time I was meant to be helpin’ this dame. I pulled a pen n’ pad out of my pocket an’ flipped it open. “Um . . . lessee . . . Name?”
The dame squinted at my pad. “What’s all that red stuff?”
I glanced at the cover. Sure enough, it was purdy red. “Oh, ah, s’nuthin’. Jist ketchup.”
“There’s ketchup on your pad?”
“Yes’m.”
“Why?”
“Maybe I ate somethin’.”
“It looks like it was sprayed on, violently.”
“That’s ridiculous.”
“Is that-“
“Okay, this ain’t doin’ neither of us no good!” I exclaimed. “Now then, missy, what’s your name!?”
The dame crossed her legs politely. “Fatale. Femme Fatale.”
“Sorceress, I take it?”
“Mmhmm.”
“And what d’you do?”
“I’m a follikenetic.”
“A what now?”
“I can manipulate hair.”
There was a long pause.
“You can manipulate what?”
“Hair.”
“What was that, hair?”
“Yes. Hair. I come from a long line of magic barbers.”
If I had eyelids or eyes to lid I’d have blinked. “. . . ‘Kay . . . Was your brother a magic barber too?”
Femme looked like she was gonna burst into tears, and nodded vigorously. She pulled a photo out o’ her pocket an’ gave it to me. I looked.
“See?” She said tearfully. “His hair’s perfect.”
And what t’ my wonderin’ gaze did appear but the face o’ the very Italian that I had killed earlier that day!
“Oh, froop!” I gasped.
“Can you help?” Femme begged, getting’ down on her knees and grabbin’ my hands. “Please! You must! I’ll pay you!”
I dunno what it was. Coulda been those sea-after-storm eyes I guess, but all I know his I looked her in the eye, though I had no eyes fer her t’ look back into, an’ nodded.
Boy, was that the stupidest decision of my life or what!?

You get inside the situation and his personality/take on his situation quickly and thoroughly so you know where you are, plus it was rather amusing. :P

@Moss: Chaos Walking has accents in narration. It has it exactly how Todd would think it, including spelling errors, incorrect grammar and written EXACTLY how you would think it and asdfghjkl, it's rather ace. Might give some examples -

But writing like thinking can be good, like when his (Sanguine's) mind wandered off, and it totally captured as the moment was. *nods*
Plus you get used to accents and whatnot.
But I do get what you mean - it can be irritating, accents in narrative. :P Prior to Chaos Walking, I didn't like it.

Well, I'm sorry if I accidentally insulted a good book. I assure you it was unintentional.
But a lot of times, it feels to me like the author is making fun of people who talk like that and taking it over-the-top. Like, I don't mind a bit of ain't or y'all or whatever in the dialogue, but when the entire narration is saturated with it, it really annoys me.
Sorry if this offends anyone. Personal preference.
