Imagine

Apparently I'll be appearing at the Imagine Festival in London this Monday, the 17th. I had a blast last year, where I showed clips from movies, but I'm not entirely sure what I'll do this time. I might read from one of the new short stories. I'd read from the ninth book, but there is nothing from the early sections finished, and anything read from later on would be a spoiler, so...

Oh, and speaking of Book 9, I have just reached the 75,000 word mark. Judging by this, the finished book will be at least 100,000 words, which is Mortal Coil length, and could be longer. LSODM will stay the longest, I reckon, simply because of the massive amount of characters involved. But because most of those characters are now DEAD, Book 9 allows me a smaller, more intimate story — while remaining as heart-rendingly traumatic as anything I've written before.

And speaking of heart-rendingly traumatic, I've actually written the last few chapters. Not to completion, of course, but I've written enough to know what happens, and how it ends, and who lives and who dies, and all I can say is...

I am MEAN.

What's so wrong with summer? Winter's great and all but summer is just so nice...

Or Spring. Laying in a field of windflowers. That's nice, not too warm, not too cold and just stunning...

I have spring now. :) It is nice.

Lucky you, Star. I get to be in Europe for their spring, horse riding across the Tuscany country side...

God, no matter how much I say that, it still sounds awesome!!

The thing is with procrastinating . . .
You spend hours trying to get round to it, and when you do, you see what you have to do is really quite simple, and then you think "Right, if it's that simple, it won't take long so I can do it later" and then you lose the will to do it now.
Urgh. :P

You know, I think I spend more time procrastinating than I do doing homework.

I don't think I'm very good at writing essays. I'm not very good at staying focused. I either start going on about metaphors or start analysing interesting stuff that isn't really related. And then I wander off topic. And forget about my original point. Or just create more points as I go along.
I'm not very good with structure.
Structure, as well as being boring, is also very constricting and it doesn't really allow ideas to flow. If my ideas don't flow, the flow will freeze and I'll just be stuck with a tiny section of water and I won't really know what to do with it. I sort of need the river to flow so I can grab the cool ideas as they meander by.

#ChaseForBookNine

Zanida Laufeydottir Queen of Asgard (Zafira Kerias) said...

*giggles* Zaffy like dynamite

Star Inkbright said...

Of course, if you just become a meandering river that sort of goes where it likes, it becomes increasingly hard to follow, and when you're not a dumb factory replicating products the same as everyone else, it becomes hard to judge. When you're all trying to make the same thing, it's easy to see where people go wrong. You can compare a phone to another phone. But comparing a phone to a fish? How would you go about that? The phone has been made for a purpose, the fish just exists. How can you judge which one can best perform its purpose when one has no purpose? Is the fish's purpose to be eaten? Then how can you judge how well it does that? The skill lies not with the fish, but with the cook. The fish just exists. The fish created itself with the help of nature, the phone has been manufactured. Could you judge how well evolution has equipped the fish for survival to how well the manufactures have equipped the phone to go about its purposes? Probably you could, actually. That would work.
. . .
I think I just defeated my argument. :P

And I have a funny habit of defeating my own arguments, too. *sighs*

But that's what I like to do. Just start typing and then sort of work your way to what you're finding. And you don't know what you're finding until you find it. I was saying that I can't write essays, and now I know how to compare phones and fish. It doesn't matter that the original question hasn't been answered, because you have discovered something, and had a wonderful journey along the way. Essays? In essays, you have to know where you're going and you have to take the reader there. It's like . . . it's like the reader is standing by a fountain and you have to take them to the aquarium. And you have to give a good tour and point out landmarks along the way and discuss the history of the city and blah, but you have to take them to the aquarium. Me? I do a more Hunter-style thing. And maybe I start doing the tour, but then I wander off and get lost, and then I start realising how stupid the tour is anyway, and then I start talking about the stupidity of tours, and then we get the car and go the a theme park and maybe we race each other there, idk. And we never end up going to the aquarium, but we have much more fun at the theme park, and we treasure the memories and get on really well and it's one of the best days we've ever had and . . .
DAMMIT GUYS I'M PROCRASTINATING AGAIN.

#ChaseForBookNine

Star Inkbright said...

I think I said something beautiful and meaningful there.

And that's another thing.

Would you not much rather go on a journey and learn lots of valuable things along the way and see some beautiful sights and get really good life experience than just walk along a few grey identical streets, get told a few boring irrelevant facts, and stare at a few fish?
I live near the world's only submarium; why would I need to visit an aquarium anyway?

Hey.

Why would you do to an aquarium when you could travel halfway around the world and see the fish in their natural environment?
Why would you want to be copped up in a building?
Why would you not want to go out and explore the world?

(Oh, gosh. *moans about the lack of homework I'm getting done here*)

I read once that people tend to cry more from frustration than from sadness.
I think it depends on the type of crying.
And I tend to cry for other reasons as well. I cry when I'm embarrassed, you know. When a teacher tells me off, I often start crying. Then everyone thinks I'm upset about it. It's annoying when someone's having a go at you and it's perfectly justified and you totally get it and you're totally okay with it and you're not really upset, but you're crying, and they try and reassure you, but you wish they would shut up because the more they talk the more you cry and you totally understand it and you're fine, you're fine. It's not really embarrassment. You don't really feel embarrassed. I just have no better word for it. It's just something about the exposure. And they're looking at you, and it's kind of . . . idk, it's all piercing and stuff, and yeah. And then you just start crying. There never seems to be any reason for it.

I suppose I'm procrastinating again.

And I still don't think I'm comfortable with being in the video part...

Star Inkbright said...

It's not just teachers. It's like when this girl told me she didn't think I should hang around with that friendship group any more. And I totally understood it, and I could understand why she said it, and I was perfectly fine with it, but I was crying anyway, crying although I was calm, not upset, and she followed me around, going "You do know what I'm saying, don't you?" and keeping on defining her point, and I understood it, I got it, I was fine, just leave me alone.

I don't think talking about this is putting me in a good mood.

I'm in a kind of sad mood, now.

I'm in the kind of mood where I just talk and talk and talk and go over things and detail them and never really have any purpose and I think I should shut up now.

Plus I'm in that kind of emotionally raw mood, like when you've just been crying and you feel all kind of shaky.
If it was lunchtime at school, I would just put my earphones in now and stand there listening until I felt normal again or until the bell went.
As I'm here, I guess I'm just talking.
Talking talking talking.
Talking talking talking.
It's odd when you start talking and suddenly it's just all pouring out, and then you think you should stop, but then that thought has poured out your mouth as well and then you're talking about stopping talking and then you're talking about how you haven't stopped yet and then you're talking about how you should talk less and all the time you're talking, talking, talking, like now, I mean I think I should stop talking, and then I type that, and then suddenly my brain's wandered off and then before you know it all you're doing is thinking, you're up in the clouds, you're in that thought-world, that magic world of . . . thought, but you're still transmitting, and you forget you're typing, you forget people will read it, you're just thinking, and then you come back and say you should stop talking but then you're gone again and you're there, and . . . and I should stop typing but once you tell yourself there you're just sitting there watching yourself type and thinking about how odd it is tha tyou're not stopping. Like, why aren't I stopping? Why am I writing this? I don't know. It's still writing. I'm still writing. I don't know. It's like procrastination. And you think you should stop procrastinating, and then you're sitting there just thinking about how you're procrastinating and THERE I GO I got sidetracked again and my brain floated off and I'm still talking, still typing, and . . . Idk.

(Sorry.)

It's like... It's like predictive text, like autocorrect, but with my HANDS. It's so strange.

YOU HAVE MY WORD ASSOCIATIVE THING SORT OF!!!!!
*is extraordinarily pleased about this*
I do that tooooo!
I often type English words rather than German ones, beacsue my brain isn't attuned to the German ones. :P
I often type incorrect words, though. Like bubble instead of better. Placemat instead of phone. It's very frequent. I'm not sure when it started, but I'm sure I didn't used to do it. When I was in year seven, I first noticed myself occasionally missed the 's' of the end of plural items, and that was really the first I noticed it, but now I find myself having to look through chapters after writing them, carefully look at every word in assessments because I know I will have written it wrong and then possibly my brain won't pick it up if I read it quickly. Urgh. I called it my brain's autocorrect at one point, and mostly I call it word association, but it's very annoying.
In real life, as well. I will screw up my words them. I will say the wrong word or say them in the wrong order - "use your torch as a phone" . . .
The other day, my friend asked me the time, and I looked at my watch and saw it was ten past, and I said 'twenty past' by accident and didn't realise, and then she said it was too late to get the train when it wasn't, we could have made it, but she thought it was twenty past and I didn't know. :/
Annoying.

Or I just stutter and have to stop and kind of glare inwardly at myself while simultaneously laughing outward, also at myself, in order to kind of show that I'm OK even though I'm sort of glaring at myself and unable to speak and then I kind of just semi-choke and then I can say whatever I was going to say, fine. :)
I think I'm going off track now, but I found an English Language homework-exam-practice-thing from last year, which was writing a speech to primary school kids who'd be coming to secondary school soon, and the comment my teacher left at the bottom said it was good, but that "expression was awkward in places", and one of the examples she'd circled was "increased population".
And I was looking at it, thinking and kind of confused because that's just the way my brain does that, kind of? If I'm talking - and I was writing as if I was talking because it was a SPEECH - I use terminology that's not how you might expect a person would say something? I don't say, "because there's more people", I say "because of the increased population", and I think it's to do with that my mouth kind of knows what it's saying better if it can use these particular terminologies, rather than what would just be the first sensible thing to say.
And the way the I talk IS awkward and dis-coordinated and you can probably see that in my typing, a lot of the time. BUt I know what's going on and my voice can say that and know that, kind of.
idk.
I'm not sure that was relevant, but it just came to mind while I was typing about how I talk, and whatnot.
But yeah. :)

And- I'll try to remember achiebemeny, too. xP

ANd- *nods* I got that. :)
But, idk, your explaining your laugh kind of mind it feel even better somehow and my eyes are smiling and :) :) thank you. :)

Hello.

Star Inkbright said...

You know what?

I don't think you should write an essay to get high marks.

I think you should write an essay to write a fucking good piece of writing.

And even if I get a D on this essay . . . then okay, maybe that would be embarrassing and would really suck, because I've always been really good at English, but if I write the best piece of writing I can, and maybe it's not good as an essay, but as a sort-of-essay-like piece of writing that discusses stuff it's ace, then I should be happy with that, and in terms of life experience, I would gain more from writing that. *nods*
(I did this with my descriptive writing, though. I wrote a really good piece of writing, I was proud of it and I discovered some good things about life along the way, and Sir gave me an A*. Then it got moderated and went down to an A because the moderator said I had lost focus.
I was incredibly upset over that. I'd still got a high A, so I should have been happy, and I'd just stuffed up two languages assessments earlier that week and had just been like "Oh well. Life is life. I'll do better next time", but I was so upset. I spent ages just sitting there ranting in Python in the back of my book and trying not to cry or start hitting things.
You know what I think she thought?
She thought I'd got more into describing the metaphors than describing the actual place.
I have great problems with getting too caught up in metaphors.
It's a thing I frequently do.
So obviously, when writing an assessed piece, you deliberately attempt NOT to repeat your frequent mistakes, so I did actually actively put energy into keeping sight of what I was actually describing. I still did it in a highly metaphorical way, but I really loved the tone of the whole thing, and like I said, I said cool things in it.
When I stuffed up my languages assessments, it was ME that had stuffed up, so I didn't mind, because I deserved what I got, yeah?
I felt that her comment saying I had lost focus was totally undeserved and so I got rather emotional about that.
So maybe I should just write a bad essay. I'd be happier that way.
But I'd rather write a good piece of writing that I was actually proud of.
*not really sure where I went here*

@Star: I've written German in my Welsh lessons. BUt I think a lot of people will do that - I think German is just closer to English, and also taught better, here, than Welsh is. The Welsh teachers get SLIGHTLY annoyed with it, though, sometimes. :P

*hugs Zaffy* Good luck.

@Star: Speaking for myself, I don't think I'd ever tell you to shut up.

@Taia: I hope your head is better soon. :)
My head hurts too, but only very slightly, so it's barely noticeable really.
Well, it's good to know I'm not alone. :)
And you would say 'increased population'. *rolls eyes at teacher*
There's just some things you just say, and I'm not really sure if I can find an example, but sometimes you just say things, and . . . Idk, I think I shall just agree with you here. :P
And - thank you. :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) About saying you like reading them, I mean. Sometimes they are good to read. Sometimes they're just pointless (I just typed 'jure' there. 'Jure' isn't even a word. :P Wth.)
. . .
OH GOSH I FORGOT WHAT I WAS SAYING.
. . . Sometimes they're good to read, but you have people who just ignore them *points to Zaf*, and when I'm speaking in real life, it's even harder to comprehend because you said your hands understood your brain better than your mouth? Ditto. And you can't look back at what you've written, so . . *shrugs*
Plus it depends on the type of person you are, and whether you like that stuff.

Bbs, dinner.

@Zaf: They did? o0
I had no idea. :P

Hey Dragona! How're you? :)

@Star: I think I agree. If you're going to spend your time, then make it something that you actually want to do, and/or is useful.
When I had to write a review of a book/CD/theatre performance, again as English LAng. exam prep, I decided to put it to my use. ANd over the course of DAYS I just spilled out random thoughts about MCS's most recent album, 'Go', in a trACK-by-track format as well as in general, and with relation to previous works of theirs, and my iPod contains a tonne of quotations and thoughts and notes on what's going on in these songs and in real-time and what things mean and interpretations. And I have sheets of paper with all these concepts and analogies.
And then I came up with my Shakespeare analogy when I listened to Low's "THe Invisible Way', and I started scribbling about that instead.
And then I went back to MCS because I was more confident with my Motion City knowledge and on the night before it was due in I just typed the thing up and had to delete my reviewing of several songs and it was still 2 or 3 times as long as it should have been, but I got something out of it, and I learned a lot.
And to me that was so much better than if I'd just gone "hwat was the last book I read? I'll just say a bit of what that's about. Who cares?" y'know?
And I think I got distracted there, but my point is my agreement in that sense. *nods*
And I also agree with you over the moderator - especially because I think that you showed me a little bit of it, the beginning, or at least a practice, and it was so good, and I can see where the explaining metaphors thing is coming from, but I think that a different writing style is never wrong - Like if somebody wrote their C/A as Patrick Ness wrote Chaos Walking, with Todd's particular grammar and vocab and spelling, I think that an examiner would not GET that it's a deliberate thing, because they don't KNOW you, and they don't know that that's what you're doing and why and how it's not wrong it's just different.
And yeah.

And I've gotta go. But I'll probably be back pretty soon. Probably.

Did you end up trying out my audio clip?

Star Inkbright said...

@Dragona: *nods* But if people are people, they always have good inside them, no matter how bad they are (and vice versa.)
And if they're not people, they don't count as bad guys. :P That's like calling a hurricane a bad guy. It's a nice metaphor, but not exactly fitting as a literal term.

I didn't; I can do now, though.

And, okay then.
Basta's OCD.
He is.
He's so fixated about superstition, it actually hinders him. And with OCD people . . . they often have one thing that is a major problem, but then also more minro things that they don't really think much about, and when Dustfinger was in Basta's house, he noticed how clean it was.
Basta's OCD.
And it's so sad, because obviously he's having to deal with this condition, and nobody will ever help him out because of the position he's in, and they just laugh at him and tease him and tell him he's pathetic and no one will realise he has an actual condition here.
And I just feel so sorry for Basta, because the only reason he's following Capricorn was because he was so insecure when he was younger and he needed to attach himself to something, but the person he hero-worships despises him, and it can't be hard, living with that.
I don't know whether the author actually knew he was OCD and maybe they just put it in but didn't make it obvious, or maybe they never realised, but . . . idk, in terms of how good the story is, I love that he is, you know. And I love how it says things like that people can have these problems and the world can just never notice, and maybe you never look for things like that, but they're there, and it also helps you empathise with him, and . . . idk. Plus it really helps the 'good guys' get away with stuff. XD
It must have got worse over time, his OCD. Because it couldn't have always been that bad, or people would have outsmarted him a lot more a lot earlier.

Fantastic books, the Inkheart trilogy. :)

He fails, and is destroyed, but the effects of ONE Reaper and a small fleet of Geth ships who were under his control is felt up to four years later. His name is Sovereign.

Hey everyone! :) Anything interesting happening? I'm so bored...

Star Inkbright said...

It's the depressing part of history that is my favourite, I think. :)
It's not that I like sitting there crying in lessons, it's just that it feels much better to learn about stuff like that, and I'd rather learn about things like that than discuss working opportunities in WW1.

(Plus, we have way too much preparation time for that. I could have pretty much written the essay about three weeks ago, but nope. Still preparing.)

(Can't we have some of the history time to do English?)

(I find it hard enough to write PEEAL paragraphs anyway without being told to write them in six minutes at the end of the lesson. Like I said, I have issues with structure, I think. I'm ranting again, but I'm not wasting comments because this is going to be posted anyway, but what you have to do when you're analysing and detailing and that is go into that part of your brain, and for me, that part of my brain works in formless structureless mush out of what is probably habit, so 'analysis' and 'structure' are pretty much opposites, I think.
*nods slowly*)
(But you know . . . when I think something hard, I just sit there and complain about it. I don't think that can be good in any way.)
(I think I like complaining.)
(Hmm. If you're trying to stop complaining, are you allowed to complain about how much you complain? Because surely if you complain about it, you go over and over it in your mind, so then you realise how sucky your complaining is so it actually leads to less complaining? Did that sentence make sense?)

Moods where you talk . . . I don't know, they're bad, because you become very self-centred and less focused on other people, and they're not particularly happy, and you just end up annoying people and then you're just left with the feeling that you've annoyed people, but despite the fact that they aren't really good, I think I love them anyway, because you just learn so much.
I'm not really sure how you can learn things from nobody, but you can. You talk/think (I talk to think) and then you just discover things.
Idk.
And I suppose that so ace that part of it has to be bad, so that's why the mood isn't exactly happy.
Mmh.

(Plus I'm still not very people-friendly atm. :P You know those moods where you just can't be bothered to spend all that energy putting up that front of being nice and all participative and interested? And you feel it's fair because they aren't putting up that front for you, but it's not really fair because you're just wasting comments talking about nothing and that doesn't deserve any attention, does it? No. And you have to keep telling yourself it doesn't, otherwise you get caught in the trap of thinking it does. *nods*
I don't really know exactly how it happens, this talking-thinking thing. I don't know, you just look up and you're somewhere else. It's like when you're procrastinating and then you tell yourself off and then you're halfway across the room thinking about something else and you sort of frown and wonder how you got there.
And that's what I mean. You just sort of wander off and then -
Mmh.
*stops talking*
If I'm annoying you, though, you can just skip my comments. Seriously.
I don't like to delete it, though; I don't like deletion. It feels like what you've created is just gone and you don't want that to happen because there had to be something of worth there, somewhere. I'm bad at deleting writing, too. :P)

Mary Contrary said...

JUBI! *tacklehugs* Hi! :)
How are you doing?

@Star: Maybe that learning without other people..
Maybe that's to do with the idea that you're not actually gaining any new data, so to speak? Like, you're putting things together to gain new information, but not necessarily actually putting anything new in.
Like, idk. Take a piece of paper. You fold it one way, you get a crane. You fold it another way, you get a flower. Fold it a third way, and you get a water bomb.
It's still the same piece of paper - you haven't added anything to it, you've just rearranged it. And you got something new OUT of it, without putting anything new in, as such.
So, it's almost like, when you think/talk, your mind is folding your thoughts, and depending on how it folds them, you end up with all this new information, derived from the same original data.
idk. That's just my thought on that. ^^

*quiet today*
*so quiet*
*but not quiet silent*
*in a dark room*
*in a dark place*
*pale hands are stirring clear fluid in a cauldron*
*and a stereo sits in the corner*
*playing an old song by Cher*

Stereo: Do you believe in life after love
I can feel something inside me say
I really don't think you're strong enough,
Now

(Hullo, Blogland.)

@Jubi: Awesome! :)

*the chemist hums along with the music*
*the music is peppy*
*and synthy*
*and full of auto-tune*
*but the chemist doesn't care*
*he's happy*

*he slowly mixes the concoction*
*an open book on the desk beside him*
*a very old book*
*from a very old place*
*taken from the cold, dead fingers of a very old man*
*at a very old school*
*in a very old city*

The Chemist: *singing along to the song*
What am I supposed to do
Sit around and wait for you
And I can't do that
There's no turning back

The Grave of a Coward said...

(Well, first I was pissed, then I was mildly miffed, and now I'm feeling on top of the world! Thank you for asking!)

*the chemist has been working for hours*
*his fingers are cramping*
*and he has other things to do*
*has to keep working*
*working*
*working*
*his head hurts*
*he ignores it*

Chemist: *singing begins to falter*
But . . . I know that . . . I'll get through this . . .
*coughs*
I don't . . . need . . . you . . . anymore . . .

*then a lightning bolts zip through his system*
*and it feels like twelve cups of coffee*

*the headache fades*
*and he continues mixing the potion*
*a spring in his step*
*dancing along to the eighties' music*

Chemist: Do you belieeeeeeeve in life after love?

*he's happy*
*so happy*

*he turns to examine the book*

The Grave of a Coward said...

(Hullo, Jubilance!
*gets tackled*
Ow!)

The Grave of a Coward said...

*the chemist's finger trails down the page*
*a book of hexes*
*potions*
*poisons*
*curses*
*all sorts of fabulously witchy stuff*
*he smiles*
*because he watched Charmed when he was young*
*and he's always wanted to be a witch*

Stereo: After love, after love [repeat]
No matter how hard I try
You keep pushing me aside
And I can't break through
There's no talking to you

Chemist: *sings along*
*still reading the book*
*simmer, simmer, full moon, half a cup of sugar, la dee da*
*he's so happy*
*he can't explain it*
*he feels like he's in Heaven*
*walking on cloud nine*
*and he can't stop singing along*
*to a mediocre eighties' song*

*only four ingredients left*
*only four left on the list*
*something old*
*something new*
*something borrowed*
*something blue*

@Taia: :) :) :)

You know, human interaction like this is great, because we just both get so much out of it and then we get so happy out of each other getting so much. C:

*puts the metaphor about folding paper in a very special place in my head*

*are there places in my head?*

*I don't know*

Fours, Amethyst! :(

Hey, Annika! :)

I don't know. You say something, and you think it's just your usual rubbish, and then it makes someone's day and they just explode over it and then you see that exploding and you go OH MY GOSH I HAVE SOME AFFECT ON THE WORLD and then you explode as well and then Zaf's dynamite feels pointless. Sorry, dynamite. :P

*the chemist mixes his potion*
*in his dark room*
*and smiles to himself*
*oh, it feels good*
*it feels long overdue*
*it feels like the world is on his side*
*it feels like life*
*it feels like falling in love*
*it feels like a hot cup of coco on a chilly autumn morning*
*it feels like petting kittens*
*it feels like holding your newborn baby for the first time*

*the stereo turns up*
*and he sings louder, louder, LOUDER*
*the song is on repeat*

*he leaves the potion*
*leaves it simmering*
*and dances over to the nearby mantlepiece*
*on it rests a picture in a frame*
*a picture of a man with a white stripe in his black hair*
*and a woman with long gray hair*
*they're talking*
*laughing*
*and eating frozen yogurt*

*the chemist picks up the picture and clutches it to his chest*

Chemist: Poor babies. Poor babies.
*kisses the picture*
Poor, sweet little darlings.
Such a pity.
Such a pity.

*he laughs*
*and his laugh sounds like sunshine*
*and murder*

Chemist: Poor children!
*spins on the spot*
Poor, darling little children!

Stereo: Do you belieeeeeve in life after love . . ?

THE END
