Apparently I'll be appearing at the Imagine Festival in London this Monday, the 17th. I had a blast last year, where I showed clips from movies, but I'm not entirely sure what I'll do this time. I might read from one of the new short stories. I'd read from the ninth book, but there is nothing from the early sections finished, and anything read from later on would be a spoiler, so...
Oh, and speaking of Book 9, I have just reached the 75,000 word mark. Judging by this, the finished book will be at least 100,000 words, which is Mortal Coil length, and could be longer. LSODM will stay the longest, I reckon, simply because of the massive amount of characters involved. But because most of those characters are now DEAD, Book 9 allows me a smaller, more intimate story — while remaining as heart-rendingly traumatic as anything I've written before.
And speaking of heart-rendingly traumatic, I've actually written the last few chapters. Not to completion, of course, but I've written enough to know what happens, and how it ends, and who lives and who dies, and all I can say is...
I am MEAN.

My Temple Run comparison was basically that Temple Run is a game with no ending- you're just constantly running through this maze, and jumping over or sliding under obstacles, and trying to make turns sharp enough to stop from slamming into a wall or fall into the ocean while these ghost things chase you. And if they catch you, or if you fail to overcome an obstacle in the maze, or if you jump off the maze, you die- game over. But you could keep running forever, and there is no point where the game ends because you've won and there's nothing left to do. The same can be said of life- there's no way to win life, really. I mean, you can have personal victories and happiness, but there is no official "you've won", and there are always new things to do. The course of life never runs out because you've played it all already. Even though Temple Run can't be won, so it has no ending, people play it for hours, just to see how high a score they can get. Similarly, we live our lives just to see how much we can accomplish, even though we will never definitively win life. The metaphor goes on, but that's the gist of it. It bears some resemblance to the conveyor belt theory, I think. I came up with it around the same time I concluded that no one can ever really know anything.

When I was younger, I got upset about how Mom and Dad do more with Nelnah than with me. It's mainly because she's more into computers than I am.
But anyway. I was in my room crying, and he wrote a note and slipped it under the door. It said something like "The likelihood of me loving one of my beautiful daughters more than the other is the same as the likelihood of me turning into a pelican and spitting watermelon seeds on the roof."
I still have the note somewhere. He illustrated it and everything. :')
Oh, I also have a card from my fifth birthday, I think, and my grandparents sent me a picture of their new puppy, Lucy.
Who lived to a pretty old age and is now dead... :-(
But yeah, she looks so cute with her pink cast.
The dude who gave her to Grandpop wanted to get rid of her so he wouldn't have to pay a vet to take care of her leg. He sounds not very nice, but I guess it's okay because Lucy had a nice happy life and even when she had to take pills, she got to take them in cheese.
I could probably make a metaphor about taking pills wrapped in cheese.
I don't think I will, though, because my friends should be here literally any minute, and I'm just babbling til they get here and I don't even know anymore.

I think I tend to end up lying on the floor and listening to music that's kind of just calming and makes sense without thinking and my mind kind of slows down... idk.
See if you can find something that's either calming or just makes sense as a thing, or do something that just kind of reminds you of who and what you are without needing a reason to be that?
Or... I don't know. It's like trying to shift your mind onto something else, so that the racing thoughts has something else to race at, if that makes sense? Kind of, easing it onto distractions.

I think in a way it's these things that kind of persuade me that everything actually exists.
Because... I don't remember where I heard/saw this but somewhere there was definitely someone who said something along the lines of, like, proving that you exist, and it was like 'tell me something about you which will make me believe that you exist. Not, like, "I was born on this date", or "I come from here", but actually something that has happened to you that will prove to me that you exist.' - I don't know, I'll have to look for that.
But it made me think at the time and your comment made me think of that, somehow. It's just something that's so beautiful because it's just real and exists.
There's a Little Prince quote along the lines of that same existing thing, too. idk.
My point is that that is beautiful, and you are beautiful, and *hugs* and :')

I always think that breathing exercises sound dumb, but there are actually scientifical reasons and whatnot why they are actually a thing. Because otherwise, y'know, they wouldn't be.
I think slow/gentle breathing is a behaviour when you're relaxed, so if you're doing that then your body is kind of imitating the state of relaxation, which then becomes relaxation, I guess.
And then I guess there's lowering blood pressure and all of the biological-ness, which maybe generally kind of calms you? Or something?
And then there's also, my psychology teacher taught us this during the main exam/revision-period last year, that if you're not getting enough oxygen to your brain, or something, that most of the parts of your brain will shut off and only the mammalian part, which focusses on your basic survival and evolutionary needs, will function, and that's why you get mental blocks in exams or under pressure or whatever, because you can't access the things that you need to know, because your brain is in auto-panic!survival mode, and so you control your breathing and that helps to even the oxygen supply so you can control your thinking.

Panic is so interesting. Krav is meant to use simple motions, and then you're meant to practice a lot a lot a lot, so that when you're attacked your panic response is to fight back, and you can do it (hopefully) without having to think about it. I used to randomly break into song all the time. Like, all the time. But then I became best friends with this girl who broke into song just as much as I did, but her voice was so, so beautiful, anytime she sang, all I wanted to do was listen. I stopped singing so I could hear her more clearly. And then not singing just sort of became a habit, and I rarely ever break into song now. Once, we were sitting at the piano and she was playing and singing a song that we both knew, and she asked me why I never sang with her. And I told her I liked listening to her. And it was interesting, because she likes it when people sing with her, so she was sort of saddened when I stopped singing, and it took her ages to figure out why, and she thinks her voice is terrible anyway. But she compares herself to the top 2% of Broadway singers, so.

See, now I'm starting to slow down, but it's making me sad. And I knew slowing down would make me sad. Well, actually, not sad as much as low. Just low. Anyway. I knew that would happen if I slowed down. But I'm still not slow, yet, either. I'm in this weird transition stage, which I think I like even less than either or, because now I have the low-ness without the slow and the self-analysis without the racing. And the mix of emotions is making me frustrated/sad, so now actual sadness is in the mix, along with frustration. And I can't- even if I slow down, I can't make myself stop self-analyzing. I need something else to do that. But I don't know how to make myself stop. It has to be an external force, because every time I try to stop from the inside out I'm just thinking about myself more which leads to more self analyzation. But there aren't external sources around me that can do that...

I hate my schools' lockdown drill. We literally just all attempt to crawl into the corner, which doesn't work at all because there's about 20 kids in each class, and the corners are not that big. So basically we're just all curled up against the wall in a line, and we're in plain view because there are so many huge windows everywhere, and we're all sitting ducks for anyone who tried to kill us. Which reminds me- I need to propose a better drill. My Krav instructor teaches one where you actually all work together to fight the attacker instead of just curling up hoping no one tries to kill you. Honestly, if someone tried to attack us in the school my chances are much better if I'm standing right behind the door than if I'm huddled in the corner.

@Ari: Don't try and struggle against it. It costs energy to struggle against it. Just try and think "I'm self-analysing. It's okay". And if you're expecting to be self-analysing, you're more likely to do it. Try and make yourself think that self-analysis is okay. Idk if this will work, but think "I am me, and it doesn't matter what I am, because I am me."
I've never really tried to stop self-analysis, though.

You know, the thing I just can't figure out about humans is why we care so much about what every other human is doing. Like, I can be best friends with my best friend, but why should I care if she's on her way to Wendy's to eat a hamburger? Why should she care if I'm heading for a short walk in my backyard? Why should it matter to me that Star is going on vacation? It does, and I can come up with a few reasons for every specific example, but humans in general just care so much about all these tiny details of every other human, and I just don't get it. We're social creatures, and that's the best answer I can come up with. I can feel it, but I have no idea why it's there.
Sorry for the feels.
Normally I just feel the ups and downs and rushes and slows without mentioning a thing to all of you, but... I don't know... I'm just being selfish. I just feel like doing it, so I'm doing it. I'll stop if it's bothering anyone, though.

That would depend on how many agents know of her return, and considering the permission they would need to attempt to kill her, I would say we would have to wipe the memories of many high-ranking government officials. However, if they are the only danger, a more feasible solution would be to simply feign her death. My concern is that elementals and sensitives have most definitely attempted to assassinate her as well. The mortal government working in coordination with mages would be quite a bold conclusion for Ms. Herisson to come to, however, I would hesitate to doubt her. Stranger things have happened.

Ania hunched her shoulders, clutching a small brown parcel to her chest. The wind whipped at her wispy dark hair, pulling strands out of her braid. She shivered, and wished her coat fit properly instead of flapping loosely.
If Britta were there, she'd have said to stop complaining and focus on the task at hand, then during the night, she'd adjust the coat so it would fit and say nothing more of it. The thought made Ania smile for a moment, but her face darkened again, akin to the sky.
Somehow she felt...vulnerable without her older sister to guide her. She was alone on the streets, and the sun was setting. Few others dared stay on the roads this late in fair weather, much less a winter storm.
She wasn't surprised when a tall figure stepped out of a dark alley, blocking her path. "State your name and your business."
"Ania Calloway. I'm going home."
The man relaxed slightly. "A Calloway, eh? Any relation of Miss Britta?"
Ania nodded, feeling a bit better. Britta worked washing and mending clothes for a number of the merchant class. If this man knew who she was, he couldn't be someone too terrible. Unless he was somehow responsible for her disappearance. Ania swallowed. "S-she was my sister."
"Was?" Ania got the feeling the man was raising an eyebrow, but she most of the light came from somewhere behind him, so she couldn't see his face.
"Aye. She's been missing for almost a week."
"Well, you have my sincere condolences." He stepped aside. "You should hurry home...before the storm gets any worse."
Something about the way he said 'hurry home' felt like a warning or a threat. Ania couldn't decide which. Still, though, she took his advice, practically running the rest of the way as snowflakes began churning through the air. There were steady footsteps behind her the whole way, but she didn't dare look back.

Ania glanced around. Her eye found no living being and her ear only the light whisper of falling snow. She opened the door of the cellar and darted inside, making sure it latched behind her.
"Ania...?" Twelve-year-old Karina sat up on her pallet in the corner, pulling her blanket over her shoulders.
"Stay under your covers, Kari," Ania said softly. "I have to take the canvas to upstairs, and then I'll come down and tell you a story."
Kari obediently curled up into a little ball, a painful reminder of how small she was for her age. "Be back soon?"
"I promise." Ania ascended the creaky old staircase, skipping the rotted bottom step.
Nothing was said of supper.

The door at the top of the stairs creaked open, and Ania tiptoed through the first floor. She avoided the parlor with smashed in windows, instead skirting through the hall. Portraits of the family who'd once lived her lined the walls. She didn't focus on the fact that they were now dead. She didn't focus on the fact that their empty eyes were staring at her.
She reached the kitchen and started up the second staircase. On the middle step, she froze. Was that the sound of a door creaking below her? No, it couldn't be. Lise seldom left the attic. Her bad leg made stairs hard on her.
Ania went up the second staircase, then the third as quietly as she could, then pushed open the attic door.
Lise was at her easel, as always, squinting to see in the dim light of the lantern. The painting she was currently working on seemed at first glance to be an ordinary enough scene, a view from the attic window as people returned home from the market, bags and bundles tucked under their arms. Ania's eyes were drawn to the far right, where a little girl in pink rainboots huddled under an umbrella. She hugged her knees, and her tear-streaked face made her look so alone. The other townsfolk walked past her, as if no one was there.
Ania cleared her throat, and the artist turned around. "How many sold today?"
"All of them," Ania replied, "Only one sold in the morning, but a foreign merchant came at the end of the day, and bought the rest."
Lise snorted. "It would be a foreigner. Another one from the south? They always did like to look at our pain and laugh."
"Aye."
"Well, their money's good enough, so I can't complain, can I?"
Ania shrugged slightly, and set her parcel on a table. "Here are the canvases you asked for, and the rest is in here." She brought a cloth bag out from the pocket of her coat.
Lise took it and spilled the six gold coins into her palm, running her fingers over each. "Did you already take your share?"
"No. My portion would be a silver and three coppers, and the man paid in all gold. I was hoping perhaps you'd have some change."
"Oh, just take it all." Lise poured the coins back into the bag and thrust it at Ania, holding up a hand when she started to protest. "It's well nigh time someone gave you a lucky break. Now get out."
There was an unsettling look in the artist's eyes now, a fire that was blazing out of control. She started painting the outline of someone else huddled near the little girl, ignoring Ania's presence.
Ania murmured a quiet "Thank you," and hurried down the stairs, still slightly in shock.

Sore feet... had PE today and then had to walk home
When she reached the basement, Karina was waiting for her.
"What are you doing out of bed?" she asked in concern, rushing to her sister's side.
"Somebody knocked while you were upstairs. I peeked through the crack, and it wasn't Britta, so I didn't answer it."
Ania blinked. "At this hour? Who was it?"
"A man with a dirty brown coat. He wasn't carrying anything, and he didn't have a mustache like Papa did."
"Did he say anything?"
"Nope, he just knocked, and then walked away after I didn't answer."
"I wouldn't worry about it, then," Ania said, smiling for the younger girl's benefit. "If he'd wanted something, good or bad, he'd have at least called out a hello.
"On a brighter, note, guess what?"
Karina's eyes widened. "Is Britta back?"
Ania shook her head sadly. "No, but the paintings sold well today, well enough that we can have three meals tomorrow, and I'll be able to get you some medicine, if the merchant doesn't try to cheat me."
Karina grinned. "Can we have cheese?"
"If there's any at the market."
Karina started to squeal with excitement, but it turned into a cough.
"You need to get back to bed." Ania guided her to her pallet and tucked her in. "Has there been any more blood?"
"No. Can you tell me a story now?"
"Of course. What would you like a story about?"
Karina considered. "Something happy. I like happy."
"Okay." Ania thought for a moment, then began. "Once upon a time, there was a ten-year-old girl."
"What was her name?"
Ania hesitated for a moment. "Britta."
"This is a story about Britta?"
"Yes, and a funny one at that."
"Are you in it?"
"A little."
"Is Mama? Papa?"
Ania laughed. "Yes, Mama and Papa are in it. You weren't born yet, though. Now are you going to let me tell the story?"
"Oh. Right." Karina curled up in a ball, pulling the blanket up so only her eyes and forehead stuck out.
Ania continued. "The Christmas Britta was ten, we still had the big house with the rowan tree in front, but it wasn't the best year for money. Britta only got a copper pocket money, but she wanted to buy everyone nice Christmas presents. She first tried to sell her Christmas dress, she hated it with a passion, but Papa caught her and sent her to her room. Of course, that wasn't enough to stop Britta. She always was so determined and rebellious..." Ania trailed off, wondering if Britta had joined in one of the riots the night she hadn't come back. It would, unfortunately, make sense. What if she'd been trampled, or shot, or burnt in the chaos? Ania swallowed. She pushed those thoughts from her mind, and started to continue the story, but Karina was already asleep.
