I have a funny feeling I’m going to delete this soon… It’s too…personal.
Today I got a package from my grandmother, and I cried. A lot of times, I’ll randomly get a package from her, an art kit or a necklace or something. This time, it was a lot of jewelry, some of it passed down through the family, some of it new, but there was so much of it… I looked at it, and couldn’t help thinking that so much of it had value to her. There were all these little notes about how she wore this pin to her first dance when she was in school, and that necklace belonged to her Aunt Betty, and… She was passing these down, and it felt like a goodbye…
You know how they always tell you it will get better? I’ve said that as much as anyone else… Well, sometimes it doesn’t. My grandma still suffers from depression, and has for a long time. Buying presents is one of the ways she deals with that. So a present from her is both happy and sad. Happy because it’s nice to hear from her and her gifts are usually thoughtful, but sad because it means she isn’t okay.
She wasn’t depressed when Dad was a kid; it was more sort of as she got older… She’s never been that healthy, though. Her doctor told her to smoke back before people realized it was bad for you, and she couldn’t stop for years. A lot of years. My parents told her she couldn’t come visit baby-Fabi if she was going to smoke, so she made herself quit so she could see her first granddaughter. Every time I think of that story, it makes me cry…
When I was little, not the first time she came to Seattle, I don’t remember that, but when I was five or so, I remember her being sweet, but sad at the same time, and tired… I kept asking her, but she said she was okay, and I believed her, and then cooked her some everything soup with the play kitchen.
She was always interested in my paper-doll fashion shows, even when everyone else was tired of them, and she’s always loved to hear about everything. She’s always been so supportive, and I’m really lucky to have her.
I’m going to fast-forward to a few weeks ago.
I really didn’t want to talk about this in Blogland at the time…
So a few weeks ago, they took her to the hospital. It was a Tuesday, I remember that, and they said she would probably be out Thursday, but it ended up being Sunday because they didn’t exactly know what was wrong. At first they said she had a heart attack, but then they found out that no arteries were blocked, so they checked a bunch of other stuff, and did two surgeries (I won’t go into detail, but it’s not likely that either of them caused the “heart attack”), and though they fixed some other problems, they’re still not sure what, if anything, was wrong with her heart. She’ll have to go back for a few follow-up appointments, and hopefully they’ll find out then.
So I dedicate this page to my grandmother. She’s been up and down, high and low, through sunshine and through a hurricane. She is amazing, and I want her to be okay.
