This day last week I was in Leeds. First, I visited the school in Huddersfield that had won the Skulduggery photo competition, and got chatting to a room full of highly amusing students. Then it was on to Leeds itself, to Waterstones, for an event, a question and answer session, and a signing that went on for, ahem, quite a while.
The following day we were in York, again at Waterstones, for a signing that AGAIN went on for longer than we had expected. Three hours in Leeds, four hours in York. Of course, some people (who shall remain nameless) chose to go to BOTH, which may explain the length...
I came back with the usual assortment of letters and notes (which I still have to go through), presents (including a garden gnome), and Skittles. Because I like Skittles.
It was so much fun, the Watersones staff were all ultra-cool, and everyone kept me grinning from beginning to end. So thank you everyone who made it out, and thank you to everyone who braved the long queues...!
So I got home on Saturday night, and I've been home for the last week, and I haven't done ANY work at all. Well, almost. Okay, so I did some businessy type stuff, but I didn't WRITE anything. Kind of. Okay, so I'm already planning the final Skulduggery book, and possibly a few other things, but that is ALL. I am taking a BREAK. Mostly.
So now that I'm taking a break, I can give a quick rundown on stuff I've been enjoying over the past few months...
Man of Steel: This was... good. It was a good film. Wasn't brilliant. I went to it with my mum, sisters and brother. My mum and sisters all thought it was amazing. My brother and I were more subdued— and seeing as how my brother and I are the only ones whose opinion I trust, I trusted us.
Dexter, season seven: Ah, the penultimate season of the serial killer hiding in plain sight. I always enjoy Dexter. Even the seasons that people say were weak, I loved. Only one more season to go, though, and then I'll have to say goodbye to one of my favourite characters. Will he be found out? Will he be arrested? Will he live? Will he die?
See, now I know how YOU guys feel...
Game of Thrones: Pure awesome. Not as awesome as the books, but awesome nonetheless. Jon Snow, Arya, Dany and Tyrion for the win.
Doctor Who: It'll be so sad when Matt Smith leaves. He's made a brilliant Doctor— childlike, impulse, excitable, yet so incredibly dark and lonely. And of course Jenna Louise Coleman is wonderful and gorgeous. (But Amy will always be my first love.)
Banshee: A weird one, this. An ex-con assumes the identity of a dead man and becomes the Sheriff of a town called Banshee. It has a lovely idea at its core that it hasn't managed to live up to, but I'm still watching. Definitely adults-only stuff, and even though the action does nod its head towards realism every chance it gets, it's still way over the top. Though I'm starting to question how no one has fired a sheriff who beats up suspects in front of the whole town...
True Blood, season five: Amazingly, this show gets better and better. It's moved away from its human/vampire love story beginnings and developed its own mythology. This is wonderful stuff, fantastically inventive, very funny, but again— adults only.
Assassin's Creed 3: errrr... I kinda stopped playing. All the Assassin Creed games are very repetitive, and I just couldn't muster the enthusiasm to finish.
Resident Evil 6: Dreadful. Again, I stopped playing. It just wasn't FUN.
Skyrim: I stopped playing because I needed to write, but I do intend to go back to this. Oblivion was brilliant.
Metal Gear Rising: Awful. If I wanted a fighting game, I'd have bought a fighting game. I buy Metal Gear games because I want to sneak around and kill people when they don't expect it. (By the way, I've just seen the trailer for the next Metal Gear game, which looks like it'll fulfil every gaming need I could possibly possess.)
N0S4R2, by Joe Hill: Brilliant book. Loved every page.
The Shining Girls, by Lauren Beuke: I read this immediately after N0S4R2 and it did not suffer by comparison. Fantastic.
Annnnd I've just been emailed the edited copy of LSODM, so I shall be going through that this weekend, making last-minute changes and additions... and then it'll REALLY be done.

I finished it at quatre to eight, though. I started reading it at four. I had breaks for occasional comments, occasional paces around my room, and dinner/tea/whatsit. It was 380 pages or so.

I'm always scared that now I don't read as much, my approximate reading rate of 100 pages per hour (it varies as each book has different size font) is still pretty much met. I was over it this time, but the font was a bit larger than average, I think. :)

In reflection though, I disliked the ending.
I dislike ending where people get to live twice. When there's a terrible decision and only one option can be picked, there can't be a twist so both options can be picked. It's stupid. That was why I disliked the end of Clockwork Prince, incidentally. It was a Jacob/Edward/Bella love triangle thing, and Tessa, the Bella-person, got to pick both of them because first one of them got transfomred so he would live (dying was the alternative) but they couldn't be together because reasons, and so she spend a lifetime with the other guy, except she was immortal, so after he died she could get together with the first guy because the spell-type thing had been reversed. WHAT NO THAT'S STUPID. LIFE DOESN'T WORK LIKE THATTTTTTTT.
And in this book, they had to decide whether to both live in Betony's world, both live in Felix's world or live in separate worlds. And guess what happened? Something went wrong so there ended up being two version of them both. Clones, like. One Felix and one Betony in Felix's world, and one Felix and one Betony in Betony's world.
What. The. Hell.

One day, I am going to write a story with the most love-iest, triangle-iest love triangle in the world and make it ahve an unhappy ending, just to show everyone how the world REALLY works. Hmm, you know what SHOULD happen? Bella-person can pick Edward-person and Jacob-person can live unhappily ever after, and then Bella-person can eventually break up with Edward-person because she's so guilty and Jacob-person, and then live out her life being miserable at the bad effects of her choices and anguising over them. So Bella-perosn will be unhappy, and Edward-person will be unhappy, and Jacob-person will have got over Bella-person and found someone else, so he'll be very happy, so Bella-person and Edward-person will be unhappy for no reason. XD

(I'm not too good at writing romance though, and I'm not really into romance books either. With no warm water currents, England will become a colder, snowier country - the kind of country it shoudl be rights be.

Hmm...
I really like the word Mantis for the sorcerers in my story, Mantes plural, but I'm a bit concerned it isn't good to use because of the praying mantis bug. The word Mantis comes from the Greek for prophet, the same root as the "mancy" in Necromancer, Geomancer, etc. I like the way it sounds and the fact that it is already connected with magic (so I'm not assigning a whole new random meaning) but not used a lot. At the same time, though, maybe not used a lot is a bad thing... And they're not bugs.

I liked We Are Who We Are, except they told everyone to throw away the books, and I'm like whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat because books are incredibly educative both in a knowledge way and in a morals way and are incredibly awesome and both meaningful+emotional+questional and fun+hilarious+interesting, so THAT IS RUBBISH ADVICE, LM,I'M ASHAMED OF YOU, but I treat magazines like they're utter rubbish because they nearly all mostly utterly areeeeee so that's okay. :)
Case Closed was a chilling song in a way, and it made me think - the justice system isn't so great. Me being me, I didn't think it was anyway, but the song brought new thoughts to my mind. :)

Well, it depends where there is. When I am here, you are there. But if I am there with you, then there becomes here, and what was previously here is now there. There can be any number of places, and even if you are not at the there you intended to be at, you are still at some form of there, because everywhere is a there unless you are in it, in which case it is a here. With that in mind, you realise you can never ever be there, because wherever you are in here, so don't be bothered about getting there, because you never will be in a there from your point of view, and from others' point of view, you are always at a there.
That could actually be a very good metaphor, actually. I mean like, you aim to be somewhere, either literally or metaphorically, and then once you're there, you look for somewhere else to be, so you are never there.
And there is always someone aiming to be in a position you are at, so you are always there from the perspective of others.

Y'know, there's a reason why I like pop music.
Some people see the words 'pop music' and they're like "Ugh, love songs and gooey mushy crap."
Well, no. Not all songs are like that. Most pop songs nowadays are about love, yeah, but not all of them. Take Little Mix, for example.
Little Mix are a girl group, of course it's expected that they'd have some love songs. But who doesn't? My friend Kbfo (Fabi's code, she'll understand) hates Little Mix, and calls them Little Pr*cks. Just because they're 'a stupid girl group who only sing crappy love songs , and no talent and get paid for no reason.' Now, he's my best friend, but I can't help giving out to him whenever he says that.
1. No talent?! Have you watched their acapellas?!
2. They're not stupid. They can spell better than Kbfo, never mind /sing/ -.-
3. They don't just sing love songs. *cough* MadhouseChangeYourLifeWingsAlwaysBeTogetherWeAreWhoWeAre *cough*
Change Your Life, Wings and We Are Who We Are are amazing songs that actually help people. They've certainly helped me. I'd even go as far as to say LM have helped me more than 1D. Definitely. But 1D have helped me through a lot too.
With Little Things, mostly. This song is about how your insecurities are what make you beautiful (very punny, Mara...). I remember literally counting down the seconds until Little Things came out, and loads of people were commenting, saying; 'I actually felt beautiful for three minutes and thirty-six seconds' and 'Thank you, One Direction, for making me feel like I'm worth something'.
The thing is, pop songs do help people through things, love songs or not. 1D are all about love songs (except for LWWY, UAN, and Forever Young, although they do have a bit of love-ish bits in them) , but that doesn't make them stupid. Not to 17.6 million Directioners in the world and counting, anyway.
And Little Mix, they're mostly love songs too. But to 4.8 million Mixers and also counting, love songs are quite possibly the greatest things in the world.

Oh, please don't apologize. If anyone's going to be sorry, it should be me... Anyways, I owe a ton of people a ton of reviews, then I need to finish my chapter with Death, and then I press forward. There's still so much that hasn't happened... To be honest, I'm not even sure where my plot is going anymore. That's the downside to letting your characters take over. Actually, just recently I narrowly avoided plot suicide. I was dangerously close for a minute there... Yeah, I'm thinking of writing his story, but first there would have to be some reason for him/me to be writing it. I guess I'll just see what happens... Thanks! Also, thank you for your emails. It's really nice to hear from you, even when I'm super busy.
