This day last week I was in Leeds. First, I visited the school in Huddersfield that had won the Skulduggery photo competition, and got chatting to a room full of highly amusing students. Then it was on to Leeds itself, to Waterstones, for an event, a question and answer session, and a signing that went on for, ahem, quite a while.
The following day we were in York, again at Waterstones, for a signing that AGAIN went on for longer than we had expected. Three hours in Leeds, four hours in York. Of course, some people (who shall remain nameless) chose to go to BOTH, which may explain the length...
I came back with the usual assortment of letters and notes (which I still have to go through), presents (including a garden gnome), and Skittles. Because I like Skittles.
It was so much fun, the Watersones staff were all ultra-cool, and everyone kept me grinning from beginning to end. So thank you everyone who made it out, and thank you to everyone who braved the long queues...!
So I got home on Saturday night, and I've been home for the last week, and I haven't done ANY work at all. Well, almost. Okay, so I did some businessy type stuff, but I didn't WRITE anything. Kind of. Okay, so I'm already planning the final Skulduggery book, and possibly a few other things, but that is ALL. I am taking a BREAK. Mostly.
So now that I'm taking a break, I can give a quick rundown on stuff I've been enjoying over the past few months...
Man of Steel: This was... good. It was a good film. Wasn't brilliant. I went to it with my mum, sisters and brother. My mum and sisters all thought it was amazing. My brother and I were more subdued— and seeing as how my brother and I are the only ones whose opinion I trust, I trusted us.
Dexter, season seven: Ah, the penultimate season of the serial killer hiding in plain sight. I always enjoy Dexter. Even the seasons that people say were weak, I loved. Only one more season to go, though, and then I'll have to say goodbye to one of my favourite characters. Will he be found out? Will he be arrested? Will he live? Will he die?
See, now I know how YOU guys feel...
Game of Thrones: Pure awesome. Not as awesome as the books, but awesome nonetheless. Jon Snow, Arya, Dany and Tyrion for the win.
Doctor Who: It'll be so sad when Matt Smith leaves. He's made a brilliant Doctor— childlike, impulse, excitable, yet so incredibly dark and lonely. And of course Jenna Louise Coleman is wonderful and gorgeous. (But Amy will always be my first love.)
Banshee: A weird one, this. An ex-con assumes the identity of a dead man and becomes the Sheriff of a town called Banshee. It has a lovely idea at its core that it hasn't managed to live up to, but I'm still watching. Definitely adults-only stuff, and even though the action does nod its head towards realism every chance it gets, it's still way over the top. Though I'm starting to question how no one has fired a sheriff who beats up suspects in front of the whole town...
True Blood, season five: Amazingly, this show gets better and better. It's moved away from its human/vampire love story beginnings and developed its own mythology. This is wonderful stuff, fantastically inventive, very funny, but again— adults only.
Assassin's Creed 3: errrr... I kinda stopped playing. All the Assassin Creed games are very repetitive, and I just couldn't muster the enthusiasm to finish.
Resident Evil 6: Dreadful. Again, I stopped playing. It just wasn't FUN.
Skyrim: I stopped playing because I needed to write, but I do intend to go back to this. Oblivion was brilliant.
Metal Gear Rising: Awful. If I wanted a fighting game, I'd have bought a fighting game. I buy Metal Gear games because I want to sneak around and kill people when they don't expect it. (By the way, I've just seen the trailer for the next Metal Gear game, which looks like it'll fulfil every gaming need I could possibly possess.)
N0S4R2, by Joe Hill: Brilliant book. Loved every page.
The Shining Girls, by Lauren Beuke: I read this immediately after N0S4R2 and it did not suffer by comparison. Fantastic.
Annnnd I've just been emailed the edited copy of LSODM, so I shall be going through that this weekend, making last-minute changes and additions... and then it'll REALLY be done.

My message is - suicide is horrible. It tears a massive gash through the world. Say every person was an ink bottle, and when one committed suicide, it fell over and was drained of ink/drained of life. As it fell, the ink always splashes out and stains the other ink bottle close to it, horrible black stains that no amount of washing will totally banish.
Maybe to you, suicide seems like a good option. Glowling and angels and release and finally happiness. Like in the instrumental at the end of the first song. But that's a disguise. It's black and bleak and sorrowful and dark. Like the music of the second song.
Killing yourself won't achieve anything. It will just create pain, and also - how do you know death is any betterthan life?

You can't make yourself alive again. You have millenia upon millenia to be dead; very little time to be alive. Killing yourself is like jumping down a black hole without knowledge of what is at the bottom, and knowing that once you've jumped in you will NEVER come out. Maybe there's a massive mattress and a tunnel leading somewhere else. Maybe. Slightly possible. Or maybe, and this is more likely, there's just a hard stone floor and you'll crush all the bones in your body, or maybe it's full of water and you'll swim till you pass out from exhaustion and then drown, or maybe there's a massive mattress but no nice tunnel and you just stay there in that hole going nowhere until you die for want of water (dehydration kills you way before hunger).
Change is constant. That is a fact. Everything changes. Everything.
And if things are as really bad, then:

Everyone is a star. A bright, shining star. And you may think, there are tons of stars in the sky. The world will barely notice and care even less if one disappears. There's still p;ently of other stars.
But remember, out sun is a star. If the sun disappeared, then we'd all die. Poof. The whole of humanity, extinguised. The whole solar syste, plunged in cold icy darkness.
Also, we won't have anything to orbit and will float around spcae, lost, crashing into things and exploding to death.
Maybe random people in China (just picked a random country, sorry) that you've never met won't notice you're gone. But there are lots of people in our solar system that will be greatly affected by your death, and will never quite recover.

Those two sentences make me feel rather sad. :(
Because like, murderers can be good people too. It's like, as soon as you kill someone everyone hates you. It's socially excluding . . . :(
WYou might say, that's why you shouldn't murder people.
But what if you're insane and can't help it?
What if you need to murder in order to do fabulous things for the world?
What if you killed someone, and now you regret it, and you're trying to start over . . . but everyone hates you beacuse of your past, and however hard you try to disguise it, moving houses and that, people always find out and then hate you.
You would never get a chance.
And then if everyone hated you, it would be much harder to turn over a new leaf than if you had support.
Murderers shouldn't be despised. They should be helped. They should be taught how to be gooder people, or how to not give in to basser instincts if they're good people already (and a lot of them will be). Just because they killed someone doesn't stop them being people. And if they murdered someone, then they very clearly need help so should be more entitled to help than others.
How do you expect to teach them how to not be murderers by hating them?
Hating just adds more bad emotion. And bad emotion leads to bad stuff happening.

Sorry. Hunter's a murderer, so it kind of hurt when it was said that the Remnant wasn't a good person because he was a murderer. Hunter's a good person, I believe. He doesn't just put his life on the line for people, he dangles it way over the line. He's changed the world for the better in numerous ways. His whole organisation is made to help. He's always offering to help people out with this and that, always jumping in and improving things and making himself severely late for this that or the other. Many people owe him their lives, both in literal terms and in figurative terms.
I don't think it's fair that all of that is ignored just because he's killed a few . . . well, a lot of . . . people.
It's like Myrnin in The Morganville Vampires! Because he's insane, and so keeps going crazy and killing people, everyone treats him as if he's dangerous and a horrible murderer and want to lock him up in cages and won't let people they love near him and are scared of being near him themselves. But Claire, although he keeps forgetting who she is and almost kills her and all that, still sees the intelligent, energetic young man and finds it so sad that he's overlooked and lost in all the insanity.

I can't really relate to Hitler, but I know I can't forgive bin Laden and al-QAeda It's not okay when you watch videos of people jumping from those towers and you can see their ties flailing around and then splat. Hitler was a lunatic.
But there are tons of people like him in the world. The only difference between him and them is that he was put in a position of power and encouraged.
If he lived in another time, another place, he could have been just another person in this world. Maybe a not-all-that-nice person, or maybe he'd have got better in some circumstances and been perfectly nice. It can happen.
Hitler wasn't unique as a person. He was unique in that he was that type of person and he had the chances he did.
I'm not saying none of what he did was his fault. Far from it. He was a horrible person who did horrible things. That's perfectly clear to everyone. But he's not 100% to blame for everything.
I do feel for people who suffered because of Hitler. But hating does nothing.

I think that every person does - and has potential to do - both 'good' and 'bad', but which they actually achieve depends mostly on everything, both big and small, that they experience. So, effectively, if somebody does something 'bad', it's kind of built up by the influence of the entire world that has always been around them, or at least the part of it that they have seen or felt or experienced.
I'm not really sure where I'm going with this. Uh.
Okay, I'm putting 'good' and 'bad', in, like, quotation marks because I don't think anything does only good or does only bad. Like, it could be a horrible thing, but it could serve as a reminder to somebody that they are alive and there's liquid in their veins, function in their brain and that maybe they should try to make what they can of it.
I don't know.
I think 'bad' experiences can still be as helpful as the 'good' ones.
It's sometimes said that "What doesn't kill us makes us stronger," but I'm not sure that quite catches what I'm thinking. It's more, "What doesn't kill us makes us who we are".
And we can all do good.

That's partially why I didn't like the end of Artemis Fowl. Actually, it's the main reason I despised the ending. If he didn't have his memories, he wouldn't be the same Artemis Fowl. He was told his memories? Yeah, right. He won't be the same.
I choose to try and interpret that he remembered after a bit, so it makes sense.
(I have a few objections with Artemis Fowl. All that rbbish about the soul, for instance. I believe that if you clone someone they will be a proper human being. Unless the someone you were cloning was not a proper human being, but whatever.)

Skulduggery and Valkyrie walked across the Sanctuary to the Medical Bay. They had just lied to Ghastly about just missing Tanith. He looked heartbroken, and Valkyrie felt her heart split with his. Just a few more days, she told herself. A few more days and this will all be over with.
“What do you think she’ll be like? Will she be… different?”
“I don’t know, Valkyrie. I really, truly, do not know. We just have to wait and see.” They walked together to the Medical Bay. Nye led them to a secret room, where Tanith was laying in a bed.
“She knows I’m Darquesse, so do we deal with that now or later?” she whispered to Skulduggery.
“We’ll see. Hi, Tanith!” He said in a brighter voice.
“Valkyrie- oh, good. Did you get away?” Tanith’s eyes were a bit wild. “Are you possessed? What happened? Everything went dark. You-” She dropped off abruptly. Then, she said softly, “You’re Darquesse.”
“Yes.”
“And you’re okay with that?”
“Only if you are. Skulduggery knows, too.” She sighed. “You’ve been gone for around three years now.” Tanith paled.
“So, Ghastly… has he…” Valkyrie smiled, a little sadly, a little sympathetically.
“He never stopped looking for you. Never. And yes, he is still completely, one hundred percent, in love with you. Sanguine is in custody. He was, ah, engaged with you.”
“WHAT???” Tanith shrieked.
“It’s okay now! It’s all right. It’s all in the past now. Besides, it wasn’t you doing it, it was the Remnant. If you’d like, when you’re fully rested, we’ll go down together and I’ll hold his arms while you hit him.” She smiled. “But for now, you rest. In two days, you get a surprise.”
