Spirit Lake

Here's a bit of an oddity...

Okay, so you all know what a fan of Ronda Rousey I am. In Women's Mixed Martial Arts, she is the UFC champ. She is an astonishingly admirable lady, brimming with confidence and wit. Some people call her arrogant, but then some people call ME arrogant, and we all know that's not true. Well, it's sort of true. Okay, it's true, but why be humble and boring when you can be arrogant and entertaining?

I am enough of a fan, in fact, that I sought out her signed gloves and won them at auction. Here they are, beside a pair of boxing gloves owned by THE greatest martial artist, certainly in living memory, one Mister Bruce Lee.

On Twitter, I follow two people. Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano. The fact that both people are very pretty women who can fight is a complete coincidence, I assure you. It's because of Twitter, however, that I heard about a project that Ronda's mum and sister are behind— something called Spirt Lake: The Game.

Spirit Lake, essentially, combines adventure video gaming with learning maths (or, as you Americans say, math), in an effort to make learning fun. Originally developed with Native American students in mind, they've realised that the Dakota (Sioux) angle— incorporating historically accurate aspects of tribal life and culture—  appeals to people and schools right across America. And you get to fire arrows! At wolves! While you learn to count! What's not to love??

And if this works like they hope it will, this could be the beginning of something huge. This could revolutionise teaching, and learning— not just in America but across the world— and it could be just the thing that's needed to help struggling students make that singular, all-important leap. This could change people's lives.

So I heard about this, and the Kickstarter campaign they were running to fund the next stage of development, and I figured I may as well send some money over to help them along. After all, the better kids do in school, the longer they stay in school, and the longer they stay in school, the more chance they have of stumbling across my books, right? Right.

As a reward for helping out, they have given me the chance to actually BECOME a character in this game. But I couldn't possibly accept. The fact is, I am amazing. I am awesome. If I were to make a cameo appearance in ANY game, I would make every other aspect of the game pale in comparison. And I couldn't do that to all their hard work. So I asked Ronda's mum if it'd be okay if I could hold a mini-competition HERE, not only for my Ameriminions but for ALL my Minions, and the winner of THAT would get the chance to become a character. If you win, the animators will create an avatar using your name and likeness and as if by magic— you will be INSIDE a video game.

It'll be like Tron only... y'know... you probably won't die.

Probably.

And even though the game is only planned for release in America (right now), the competition is open to anyone of any age and nationality. So here's what you have to do. You have to tell me why YOU would be the most awesome video game character EVER. Once we reach the 5000 comment limit and the Comments Section closes, I shall collect all the entries, stick the names in a hat, and randomly pick the winner.

And yes, entering more than once, with DIFFERENT reasons, gives you a better chance of winning.

There. Bet when you opened up this Blog today you had no idea this was coming at you.

Star, nobody could look worse on this blog than me! You're never seen in a bad light, you're too nice for that:)

I'm constantly being seen in a bad light, though. Cuz I'm a terrible person. Which is made obvious by people constantly ignoring me and making me feel like crap!:D

Dragona Pine said...

Also, I think I've just created a complex character... by accident.

Star nobody could see you in a bad light. (Not even if they tried) I'm kinda down now. I'm slowly starting to hate Twitter

Star Inkbright said...

@Mushroom: But they are your thing. *frowns*

I think of you whenever I think of Skittles or rainbows.

And I may notify everyone whenever I obtain Skittles (I just obtained some, so), but you talk about them more. I just think about them when I eat or get them.

You are truly the rainbowSkittlesian.

And the fact you make people like Skittles proves that people take notice of you, which is always nice. :)

I'm banned from Twitter. I spammed celebrities with cheese adverts.

Well it's not actually twitter it's the people on it (Some people you guys and other people are fine)

What would you do? What would you say?
How does it feel? Pretend it's OK
My eyes deceive me, but it's still the same
Pretend it's OK

I remember the day when we were out all night
I wish that I can get the day back and tell you it's alright
Cause we all do the same thing, we just don't realize
That we're living on borrowed time

What would you do? What would you say?
How does it feel? Pretend it's OK
My eyes deceive me, but it's still the same
Pretend it's OK

I see the light that I'm chasing
A memory, but it's fading
When it's gone I'll be waiting
Knowing it's too late (knowing it's too late)
You chose the road that I'm walking
Now it's your soul that I'm caught in
And you're not hearing when I'm calling
Calling your name

One breath, one step, one life, one heart
Two words, two eyes, new beginning, new start
Too neat, too narrow, too short, too bright,
I'm there with you, here by my side

What would you do? What would you say?
How does it feel? Pretend it's OK
My eyes deceive me, but it's still the same
Pretend it's OK

Nothing here, no one talking, knowing it's too late
But sometimes it can get so hard pretending it's OK
Nothing here, no one talking, nothing's gonna change
But sometimes it can get so hard pretending it's OK

What would you do? (what would you do?)
What would you say? (what would you say?)
How does it feel? Pretend it's OK
My eyes deceive me, but it's still the same
Pretend it's OK

What would you do? (what would you do?)
What would you say? (what would you say?)
How does it feel? Pretend it's OK
My eyes deceive me, but it's still the same
Pretend it's OK

Oh yeah
What would you do? What would you say?
Pretending it's OK
What would you do? What would you say?

Dragona Pine said...

Yeah... the character was just meant to be like a character. Then I made him have a cool part in the piece I'm writing and it's cool.

Star Inkbright said...

@Mushroom: You aren't ignored, though. O_O

And yes, Dragona, honesty is the best policy. I know.

And this is why I should be honest and not try to hide my bad feelings, because then everyone expects me to carry on being nice to them and then I just get plain tired of it. Which is really bad. :P

Ahahaha, nobody could see me in a bad light? I know quite a few nobodies. :)

Now I'm acting like I'm all depressed. :P Waste your making-people-feeling-better energy on people who are actually feeling bad, guys. I'm fine. :)

There are a couple of new stories on my blog. The second part of The Dark Shadow (a story about a Detective in 1891 against a supernatural being set in the SP Universe).
And The Diary (a zombie story set around a single squad of the SOS stuck in Tehran (the Iranian capital) with thousands of zombies - again set in the SP Universe.)
They're all connected with my fanfic. Not yet, though. They will be soon.

No, Star, you don't understand!

I can't be unique, ever. I can't be my own person, not really. It's because of Him that I can't, too. He claims that anything I do first He thought of first and anything I do He has to better me. You don't understand.

I'm annoyed because it's not that I'm noticed. It's that I'm actually doing something okay, but I still can't be me...

Lewis Ravenscroft / Rhydian Blake said...

I need some advice. If somebody is messaging you on Twitter (And it's not the first time they've done it) Should I send something back, ignore them or tell someone? I really don't know what to do.

Dragona Pine said...

Rhydian, ignore them and tell someone.

Luciana said...

Depends what they're saying, Rhydian.

Lewis Ravenscroft / Rhydian Blake said...

Thanks. I don't know why I'm letting it get to me. Thanks. *hugs Dragona & Luce8

Dragona Pine said...

Ignore them and you're not prompting them to do anything more. Telling someone else allows them to know about it so they could get involved and try and stop it.

Lewis Ravenscroft / Rhydian Blake said...

That's what got me into this mess Dragona (Good advice still)

I'm not just saying it. I categorise my friends, a lot. It's bad, but I do.

And the only categories you're in are the ones which are about time (old, new, regular) and about place. :)
Oh, plus another one. The category of people who do not feel great sometimes. Technically, everyone doesn't, but not everyone is there.
And then I have another category you aren't in; it's the people-who-Scáth-knows category. *laughs*

Lewis Ravenscroft / Rhydian Blake said...

People should smile more

But you’ve got everything laid for you
Just close your eyes, take a deep breath
And start another war

Keep buying, keep moving
This city is sitting next to me
Well laid out, it’s gonna come
One thing is certain

I can’t change the world
‘Cause trying to make a difference makes it worse
It’s just an observation I can’t ignore,
That people should smile more

And people should smile more
But the lights are so bright that they blind you
Just one more meaningless scientific break-though
The more we know, the less we care
What’s damaged on the way

Keep moving, keep buying
This city is sitting next to me
Well laid out, it’s gonna come
One thing is certain

I can’t change the world
‘Cause trying to make a difference makes it worse
IT’s just an observation I can’t ignore
That people could smile more
People should smile more

I get it Edward. Letterbomb brings back memory's of letter land which is what we did in school when we were learning letters an the sounds they make.

Star Inkbright said...

@Ais: IKR.

I'm colouring in this front cover thing right now. What is the point of this? How is making some words look fancy going to help me in Textiles at all? I'm not even doing Textiles ever again after this term . . .

Aisling Dubh said...

Homework should be gotten rid of in every country. It's mostly pointless and it takes up too much time in our lives. We do actually have lives outside of school. Do teachers not realise this?

Trip Castalan, Lord of The Hobbits, The Fourth Most Popular Folk/Parody Banana Thief In The Land said...

Actually Aisling I was referencing Green Day and Naruto and have no idea what letterland is but gold star for effort! Have a cookie! In fact, your right! Well done! OVER 9000 housepoints for you!

Mary Contrary said...

@Star: That's not so bad. It may not be useful, and is proabably pretty tedious, but it can't be too hard, right?

I've gotta write out my entire German controlled assessment so somebody can go through it correcting everything I've been taught to write, adding a bunch of other things in and then crossing half of it out anyway because it's too long.

@Edward: I recognise 'letterbomb' as a song name (I think?), but I don't know it well enough to, like, know it. :P

Aisling Dubh said...

Ok *noms cookie* yay house points!

letterland was awesome. Then my school stopped using it and my brother used Jolly Phonics. Letterland was so much better. I've no experience with Jolly Phonics but still Letterland wins.

Trip Castalan, Lord of The Hobbits, The Fourth Most Popular Folk/Parody Banana Thief In The Land said...

What I don't get is geography. I have never learned ANYTHING from geography, aside from the only lucrative job you can get from a geography degree is a geography teacher. Geography exists solely to train the next generation of geography teachers! So I say to you, think back. Have you ever actually learned ANYTHING from geography? Or were you just told things that it would only take a few secods to think of.

Most geography seems boring, but my school has a pretty good curriculum that combines it with art!

Maralie Lily Charm said...

Where are my headphones...?

Star Inkbright said...

@Edward: I disagree. I have found out stuff from Geography. Plus, it is important to know about other places in the world, because we all live in the same world and we should know about other people's backgrounds so we can understand them. If you know about a country, the people who live there are more likely to want to give you a job. Of course, if you just want to live in the same aera your whole live, this paragraph doesn't affect you, but how boring would that be? When I'm older, I fully intend to live abroad for at least a bit.
How have you never learnt anything from Geography? I have learnt how volcanoes work, which is pretty cool, and how global warming works, which helps me sound like I know what I'm on about when I'm ranting on about global wamring. I have learnt about penguins, and that's cool beacuse penguins are awesome and are secretly ninjas. Also, in Science, when talking about evolution, I can easily use penguins as examples. Furthermore, I have memorised the names of countries in Africa, which is IMMENSLY useful in games where the best who knows the most countries wins. Also, I know how many crimes are committed in my nearest city and my nearest town in a month. I have learnt that Cyprus, which the atlas says is part of Asia, is part of the EU. I have learnt the regions and climate of Australia, which will be useful when I go and visit Perth, Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and wherever the hell Death lives when I go and visit Australia. And I will do. I will. I will. I then emailed my climate graphs to my blgofriends and then THEY learnt something about their areas. Also, I learnt how scary spiders are in Aus and how effectient the Sydney ambulance service is. I have learnt more countries in Europe, which I need to know beacuse it is MY continent, and I know the states of the US, which was very helpful because now I know where the hell books are on about when they talk about places. The majority of the books I read are American, and when I learnt the states I felt all Ohhhhhhhhhhhh and wanted to reread every single book I'd read know I actually knew where everyone was.
I have learnt many things in Geography. :)

HI JUBI! :)

Hm. Geography taught me effects of economy struggles on urban areas.
It also taught me that many people who work to make of a lot of the things which we use daily get very little for the work that we do, as well as organisations which help to give them a little bit more.
It taught me that every part of the world is so different from the next, and how things we do that we barely even think about can have pretty big impacts on people and places on the other side of the world, which could, in effect, come right back around to impact us, eventually. :)

@Edward: Pay attention to the golbal warming stuff. :)

Ah, I think my friends are sick and tired of me going on about global warming. I keep making a fuss about the recycling bins. XD

I won't do Geography next year. :(

And also, I often learn things I don't know in Geography . . .

Mary Contrary said...

Hi Duck! :)

@Edward: If your geography and sciences courses are similar mine, then the former will help you to grasp some ideas covered in chemistry (and other sciences, too, actually), for instance with plate tectonics and such.
I still struggle to work out what plate tectonics have to do with chemistry, but, there you go. :P

Duck said...

In my geo lessons we're learning abou landfill. It really isn't that interesting.

@Edward: I think you have a crap Geography teacher.

You seem to hate Geography as much as I hate RS.

Of course, you couldn't REALLY hate Geography as much as I hate RS, because it is simply not possible.

I thought year nine geography was interesting. :)
Don't remember most of what was learned, but it was interesting. :P

Plus, my year nine geography teacher was Scottish. Scottish accents are awesome. :P

@Star: I only have one or two RS lessons left in forever, now. ;)

I really love science but our science teacher is just SOOO boring. He talks and talks and talks and talks. When we are going to do an simple experiment, such as rolling a ball down a ramp, we spend 2 or 3 whole periods planning for it!

Mary Contrary said...

Not that other accents aren't awesome too, but, yeah. :P

I liked geography in primary school, I think. But years 7 and 8 I did not, for some reason.
My taste in history developed in the opposite way, actually. :P

Trip Castalan, Lord of The Hobbits, The Fourth Most Popular Folk/Parody Banana Thief In The Land said...

Yeah but I already know about global warming and it's details! But plate tectonics sound fun. But as you said, that can be learnt about in science. When we were told we were doing natural disasters we were all ecstatic. But we proceeded to learn about the only boring natural disaster, floods. Oh no, the water is rising slowly! Oh no it's gone over the dykes! Oh no, my flowers have been destroyed! No cool stuff on plate tectonics and earthquakes or the raw destructive power of tornadoes. DAMMIT GEOGRAPHY! Why you so trolly?

Star Inkbright said...

@Taia: Lucky. You.

I detest RS right from the bottom of my soul.

There is nothing I hate more.

@Edward: We never did floods. Earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis, here. :)
And, there was a lot of flooding around my area toward the end of last year (I think). It causes loss of life (human and livestock), and it can become, economically, pretty expensive. I'm pretty sure I had a teacher who was flooded out of her home, then. The same teacher whose homework task I am avoiding completing, now. :P

I disagree with a lot of the things that they teach and how they teach them.
I understand the need to know about other religions, and the philosophical approaches can be interesting but... I don't know.

We had a question in our mock exam paper which read "Should Christians have to obey laws?".
The point of laws is that everybody obeys them, isn't it? Because they're there for the protection and safety of people, for the most part, right?
And they kind of assume that everybody who's part of a religious group automatically have the very same beliefs and ideas and feelings. Which isn't true. :/

Star Inkbright said...

FOUND IT!

*pastes*

RELIGIOUS PEOPLE ARE NOT MINDLESS ROBOTS

I don't think people realise that belonging to a religion doesn't automatically make you a mindless drone that thinks exactly the same as everyone else in the religion. People in a religion still have different views and are still human with their own opinions. What do you think will happen if you join a religion? Do you think they brainwash you with their special brainwashing serum? Or do you think your brain just disappears?
Religious Studies annoys me. People ask, "What would a Christian think about this?"
And I think, "Well, it entirely depends on who the Christian is as all Christians think differently, seeing as they're all people and people all have different views. Christians don't all think the same thing, you know."
They're meant to be teaching us how to understand religious people, but they are so not. How teaching us that belonging to a religion makes you a brain-dead robot helps people understand how being religious feels, I have no idea. They don’t exactly allow us to walk around the classroom pretending to be zombies. They mostly expect us to work it out, but seeing as we’ve never been zombies and don’t know how being one feels, that is rather hard.
They teach us about discrimination and stereotyping. They teach us that it is bad. But then they do it themselves. They stereotype religions, say that everyone who belongs to this religion automatically thinks this. ‘This’ doesn’t just mean an aspect of the religion. ‘This’ can be a modern issue that doesn’t involve that religion at all. The say that to think someone is a bad driver because they are a woman is prejudice, stereotyping. Well, to think someone thinks this or that because they belong to this religion or that religion also happens to be stereotyping and prejudice. If the same people who are teaching us not to stereotype are also instructing us to stereotype, how is this solving the problem of discrimination in the world? Think about it. It isn’t. It’s adding to it. Children learn about the world from their teachers. This is all well and good when they’re being taught about global warming and how to prevent it. It is not so good when they are being taught it’s normal to stereotype and single out one group of people from another.
Why do we study RS? What is the purpose of it? The purpose is to teach us how to understand religions and religious people. Well, we aren’t. In order to understand religious people, we have to be taught what it would feel like to be them. They don’t teach us how it would feel to be a part of a religion. We don’t really empathise with them. No, so long as we know what religious people are told to believe, that makes it okay. It’s like reading the school rules and expecting to learn how schoolchildren think from them.

Star Inkbright said...

Religions are a lot like political parties. If you look at speeches of David Cameron's, you can find out what the Tories are meant to stand for and what one of them thinks. But you have no idea why everyone in the Conservative party chooses to be in it, you have no idea what different views they all have on what their party should be doing. They'll all be in it for different reasons and will all have different views on what the party should be. Same with any political party. Same with any religion. People join religions for different reasons. They aren’t always just bored kids in them because their parents make them be. There are thoughts, feelings, realisations behind it.
One boy in my RS class said Christians were stupid for not reacting, that if someone called them a name they should fight back.
He didn’t know that a lot of Christians actually would. Some wouldn’t, some would rise above the insult and ignore it, but some would fight back. How can this be, you might ask, when all Christians believe the same thing? They don’t. They’ve all been told the same thing by God, but they interpret it differently to each other, and some just disobey the rules occasionally. Once again, this is like school rules. You’re meant to obey them all, but rarely does this always happen.
How can people interpret things differently? Well, imagine you were given the phrase “I have climbed a mountain.” Some people could think it meant someone had literally climbed a mountain, using harnesses and ropes and so on. Some could think it meant someone had walked up a big hill, and was exaggerating. Some could think it was metaphorical, and the person who had written the phrase hadn’t literally climbed any mountains, but had mentally overcome great obstacles. Some could think the same, except have a different interpretation of the metaphor.
There are billions of phrases like this in the Bible. Therefore, there are billions and billions of different views of the Bible and of Christianity. An example from Christianity is that most Christians believe that men and women are equal. Some think this means that women should be able to do everything men can, and vice versa. Some think this means they have equal worth, but different roles and different duties.
Also, the Church and the Pope do not speak for all Christians, like the Prime Minister doesn’t speak for everyone in the country he is leader of. Many people in England do not agree with the decisions of the Government and the Prime Minister. Many Christians don’t agree with the decisions of the Pope and the Church.
Another person in my RS class asked that if Christians thought everyone was equal, why did they hate gay people?
Correction. Christians are meant to think everyone is equal. A lot of them don’t, because they’re human and are just as bad as the rest of the humans. Non-religious people are told not to discriminate and that everyone has equal rights as well. And do they treat everybody equally? Not even close.

TBC

Star Inkbright said...

Also, not all Christians “hate gay people.” A lot of Christians, for example me and my mum, are in favour of gay marriage. A lot of Christians, however, believe that marriage is the union of a man and a women and that gay people could be the equivalent of married, just not call it marriage, as it is incorrect use of the word.
Another thing to say. Occasionally I chance upon Christian YouTubers who comment on songs posted on YouTube saying things like “everyone who listens to this will go to hell.” I am sorry, but I do not see how posting comments of this nature is meant to achieve anything at all. If you want people to join your religion, you have to be welcoming, and make them want to be like you. By posting comments undermining the music people like, you are not only angering people and making them hate you, you are giving Christians a bad reputation. Who would want to be a Christian when it meant being like them? Also, who would want to be a Christian if it meant they could no longer listen to the music they liked?
People in general don’t want to join religions. I’ve been talking about Christianity all the way through this speech, but this speech isn’t exclusive to Christianity. Christianity was simply the religion I could say the most about. People do not want to join religions, and people do not like religions, and people are not fans of religious people. And why is that? Mostly because people think that belonging to a religion means you have to think exactly what you are told to think, and also because a lot of religious people are jerks and people don’t want to be like them.
I said before that belonging to a religion was like belonging to a political party. It’s stronger than that; you often have to wear things marking you out as different, and more loyalty is required; but it is similar. You believe you know the best way of living, the best way of doing things, and you think that being in it will benefit you. Unless they’re concealing it, political parties don’t use brainwashing serum, and neither do religions. Just because you believe in something and want to follow it does not mean you suddenly surrender your freedom of thought.

If you hadn't been there to accidentaly pop my bubble of grief I probably would have wallowed in my room for days and not gone to the party which was on the same day and gone back to school the day after hat. I would have stayed in my room, wailing with grief for an incredibly long time, and maybe gone and killed that dumb driver that killed her. So for saving me from jail, grief and giving me new friends, I dedicate this page to all of those lovely people. Thank you.

It's hard to explain, but if there is a God up there, who understands all, he'll understand my thoughts. Also, religions are amazingly flawed. It just eats my brain.

Hey, this is irrelevant, but you know those people who come into schools to talk about Christianity?

They're doing it all wrong. It boths irritates and saddens me, beacuse I could do a much better job.

Their problem is, they start with something fun,a dn then they start going on about how Jesus is awesome and everyone just switches off.

Plus, say they "This is how awesome God is", but they never actually say "Why would you want to be a Christian? How would you benefit?"

They way they do it, it just sounds like a load of deluded religious nonsense to outsiders.

I know I could do better. *frowns*

Plus, you need to have the Jesus stuff merged throughout, not suddenly give a whole dollop of it at the end, because people just switch off, then.

@Star: I think I agree with your entire 'speech', there. :)

They teach us to answer questions with "A Christian would say that...", and, "A Hindu would disagree because...", and the fact is that people are not that simple.
Just because they have some common beliefs does not make them the same people.

Personally, I don't lean towards any particular religion, but I take pieces from them that I agree or disagree with, and I suppose that helps to build the things that I believe in. So I guess at least a little of my character is owed to religious studies for teaching me that, even if the way in which they teach it is not quite right, in my opinion.

Ieni Strider (Ieni The Ninja Aeroplane, Eater of Fabi's armses) said...

They don't tell me how they know Christianity is real over eg. Hinduism.

Star Inkbright said...

@Ieni: I have a sort of belief that most of the religions are real and are just interpreting God in different ways.

Like, Muslims are just like Christians except they believe Jesus was just a prophet and that there was another prophet later on called Mohammed.

Christianity is just like Judaism exceot they believe the Messiah has come and that it was Jesus.

Jews believe that Jesus wasn't the Messiah and don't believe in him.

Jesus was a Jew . . .

And I'm sure other religions are connected somehow, I just know less about them. :P

I believe God is up there and that all the religions have found different ways of obeying him.

Like different governments, they have also developed different laws for living. Lots of religious rules are just common sense and like modern laws.

In America, RS isn't compulsory and they have middle school.
But both school systems in England and America aim the educate the children with all they need to know about the world.

Yeah yeah?

This guy at church said on Sunday that he didn't think that the Muslims and all that got the same kind of deep inner peace that we could wih God, that it wasn't the same.

I disagreed.

I think deep inner peace is an emotion, like love or unhappiness.

Or it could be the HolY Spirit flooding your mond - but then who's to say it only floods Christians? God loves all his people equally, and nowadays everyone can be part of his people.

Hmm.

And Ieni - religions are AMAZINGLY flawed. In history and stuff, I hate the church as much as I hate the government nowadays. :)

In Divergent, Triss felt that even if all the other Dauntless weren't sticking to the values of their faction, she could still stick the them and be as a Dauntless was meant to be. Even if the Church is all corrupt, I can still stick to the values it is meant to follow. *shrugs*
